And when you factor in the added challenges of what were all going through with covid19, Remote Learning and isolation, many teenagers are struggling oe now more than ever thats right. Sheinelles here with a really special school in westminster, maryland, determined to make a difference about Mental Health good morning good morning. I was so impressed with these teenagers at winters mill high hool students from the peer advocacy program, theyre doing a lot of good its a club they started to spread positivity, hope, and support. As they lead the way in breaking the stigma surrounding Mental Health it was i feel lost. I feel disconnected. Mostly i was kind of like, i feel alone reporter when covid19 first forced schools to shut down, 17yearold diana flores felt like a lot of confused teens isolated from her teachers and friends, her circle of support shrunk it was definitely an adjustment not just for those big conversations but for the little conversations as well reporter daily doses of Human Connection vanished from students lives. Many say their Mental Health deep river, lord, i want to suffered along with it the school noticed it was a crossover growing issue before the pandemic hit we realized the Mental Health and how its been attacking our teens. So we really rallied around and decided to tackle it together as a School Reporter two years ago, the school formed falcons of strength about 50 members strong, the students are trained to address Mental Health issues and support their peers providing resources and friendship to those struggling a group now more important than ever they know your faces and they can come to you in confidence. Is that how it works people that might not have someone directly at home might know that we could connect them to someone they might be able to talk to or just kind of be a friend to them reporter you know, im a parent and i would hope that my kids know that they can come and they can talk to me. But i was a kid. I know how it is why do you think its important to have a program like this where students can talk to each other . I feel like a lot of students, they would be a lot more comfortable opening up to students a lot of kids will find it kind of scary almost to talk to pandemic, winters m adults reporter during the pandemic, winters mill was forced to switch to Remote Learning, all athletics and prom was canceled students struggled with the new norm diana and the falcons of strength asked the faculty and student body to Share Positive messages hundreds rose to the challenge a lot of messages that came out, we wanted things in different languages as well. A lot of other messages were famous quotes. Reporter but addressing Mental Health isnt always easy and often comes with a stigma. Less than 14 of School Aged Children receive any Mental Health treatment in the past year many experts are urging schools to prioritize Mental Health education for kids i dont think that we can ladies and gentlemen, rabbi fully expect young people to be putsback. Successful in their academic achievements if we dont address the social and emotional factors that we know impacts their ability to achieve reporter the program is making an impact on students guys, raise your hand if you have seen this program falcons of strength make a difference at your school. Can somebody speak to the kind of atmosphere that you guys were trying to create in your high school i feel like this program has had many impacts like, positive impacts on kids lives. It has helped them through a lot. Like, just the positives, the energy we give out to them its great strength dont judge they listen and reassure those struggling there is work to be done for future generations we have to let these people know that its okay to talk about Mental Health. Its okay to speak on what you are going through. Such good kids. Falcons of strengths mantra is hope, health, and strength something the club at Winters Mill High School is definitely living up to this morning. And for the school year. We have Morgan Radford there with us this morning and you are with some of those kids good morning reporter good morning, sheinelle. Thats right we are standing in a judgmentfree zone this is all about health and happiness and hope and i want you to hear from the from the narrow straits i students themselves. Because what theyre doing is so call out to you. Important. This is senior diana flores. Diana, you are a student leader you, god, answered me with expanse. Here in this group explain to people what are you hearing when you call your peers, what are they struggling with most . You know, weve been in Virtual Learning since march in the chambers of justice a lot of students are feeling ginsburg, art that reads anxious, sad, alone. Our facetime calls, our texts, justice, justice, you must its not the same as our pursue. Inperson connection we miss our friends. Reporter and i can only a command in the 16th chapter of imagine. Deuteronomy. This is anything but a normal learning environment the ra bin i can tradition i want to also introduce you all to connor doyle. Hes a junior and student leader what are tips you share with your peers when theyre struggling assigns mean to every word , so just remember there is a place there must be a reason justice for you. That there are people that want is written twice. To talk with you and want to be your friend. I think this club is a way to the repetition here teaches even show that. It really helped me when i was getting bullied. Now i have a chance to help ezra, a medieval rabbi, that time and time again all of the those kids too reporter and youre already making such a difference all of the students here behind me are part of this club days of your life you must we also have their principal Michael Brown whos been pursue justice. Motivating them. People have been watching this this was how Justice Ginsburg lived her life. All over the country not just for your students but teens justice did not arrive like a across america what advice would you give them as theyre struggling with lightning bolt but rather Virtual Learning you know, love is real. Through dogged persistence, all its an action word. The days of her life. You see all the students here. We at Winters Mill High School real change, she said, enduring know we cant do it alone but there are adults and kids all change, happens one step at a around you that can help you time. Through whatever your struggling with she faced many obstacles in her reporter i think the message you hear here today is you cant life, even from a young age, do it alone. And so we are so impressed by though chosen as valedictorian the things youve been doing of her high school class, she that we want to help and also the nice folks over at gave no graduation speech. The Chan Zuckerberg initiative instead, she grieved at home with her father after burying they also heard about some of the connectivity issues they her beloved mother one day before graduation. This morning her family had already suffered the Chan Zuckerberg initiative are donating web cams and wifi terrible loss with the death of hot spots to everyone in the her sister when Justice Ginsburg school was only 14 months old. Can you imagine . You guys will be able to do but Justice Ginsberg kept rising. All your work, all your online a full scholarship to cornell it doesnt stop there. It doesnt stop there. The team over at headspace also university and only one of nine heard about you. They heard about the difference youre making in your community. So they decided to give you one women in her Harvard Law School free yearlong subscription to class. After transferring to columbia headspace. You can have the resources that law school, she graduated first in her class, yet she could not find a job. You need for your Mental Health. And thats for all 1100 students no firm in new york would hire so this is a big day to honor all the big work youve been doing. How do you feel, diana her because she was a woman. I really i cant believe all of the Amazing Things we these obstacles didnt deter her. Just received, you guys. Its amazing she pressed on. So thank you so much as she sat in an interview with you guys are the real heroes. And thank you for being there for your peers her dear friend, nina tote sheinelle, thank you for telling their story. Enberg, i quote, i get out of law school with top grades. Because this is unlike anything ive seen. No law firm in the city of new absolutely. Its a program they say should york will hire me. Be implemented all around the country. To talk to our kids. I end up teaching. Great job. And lets keep it going lets keep the love going. That gave me time to devote to we couldnt have all of the kids and everybody involved with the program out there. So we thought how about virtual . The movement of evening out the its very 2020 heres more of the participants. Hi, guys. We saw a lot of happy faces on this board when it was just rights, excuse me, of women and men. Announced, all of the gifts i was nominated to a vacancy on coming their way the d. C. Circuit, justice one of the peer facilitators, oconnor once said to me suppose cassidy, can we talk to you for a second we had come of age in a time what has this program meant to when women lawyers were welcome you, honey at the bar. Hey you know what . Today we would have been retired so i think the program really its helped create a sense of partners from some large Law Community in the school and a sense of connection reducing the firm, but because the roof was not open to us, we had to find stigma of Mental Health. From my freshman year im a another way, and both end up on senior now ive seen a huge change in, like, students the United StatesSupreme Court. Opinions about themselves. Do you feel bonded more with your classmates . All the days of her life she does it kind of change the dynamic of your relationships . Pursued justice, even in absolutely. Illness. So we have certain programs she fought five bouts of cancer where the whole school will participate and then well have and supported her beloved marty through his battle with cancer like visual reminders. As well. Everybody contributing each time she pressed forward. Something. Since you dont see everyone every day, thats a really nice she returned to work, to the reminder of just that were all bench, to the court with focus a part of the School Community we all share some of the same experiences. Each and every time. Well, i hear you have a future in social work. So youre already well on your nothing was given. Pursuing justice took way. God bless you we want to say thank you to resilience, persistence, a the students and teachers for sharing more about this wonderful program. Its doing a lot of good commitment to never stop. Maybe itll catch on you know, theres obviously so much awfulness happening, but as a lawyer, she won equality every time we feature, like, a young person like were seeing, im so hopeful for women and men, not in once with victory but brick by brick, the children yeah case by case, through also this Mental Health issue meticulous, careful lawyering. At this age, my own exploration she changed the course of of my Mental Health issues and anxiety in particular, theres a direct path that goes back to junior high and high school. American law. Adults dont think that young and even when her views did not people have earned the stress equity to have anxiety thats not true. Prevail, she still fought. So this is a Great Program we should also mention, we have a special collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg in recent years, Justice Initiative and weve launched a new section on our website ginsberg became game us for her if youre watching at home and dissent. Despair was not an option. You want to talk with your own teenager, we have guides at she said, and i quote, dissents speak to a future age. Today. Com parents. Its not simply to say my all right colleagues are wrong and i would thanks, everybody. Thank you thanks to morgan, too, for that. And goodbye, kids get to school. Bye do it this way, but the greatest yeah. Dissents do become court at least its friday. Go to your homework, winters mill up next, weve got a spin on opinions and gradually over time food and football. Their views become the dominant Anne Thompson is going to join us from new orleans where the saints are playing view so that the dissenters hope the local Restaurant Owners keeping the taste of that city theyre writing not for today but for tomorrow. Alive and well Justice Ginsburgs dissents were well see whats going on down there but first heres a quick look at your local news and weather and this is today not cries of defeat, they were no. No local new blueprints for the future. Justice ginsburg loved her family. Her grandchildren, her dear friends, her colleagues, and her court family. We all send our love to you.
