Massive flames on Diamond Mountain near calistoga. Flare up in the napa valley state park just outside of calistoga and st. Helena. Ground crews have been actively cutting containment lines ahead of the fire trying to get a jump on it before the winds kick in, again. Were back at a red flag warning for the area. They are expecting some possible north, northwest winds to surface at the Higher Elevations above the fire area. That was a big concern right now. Firefighters are trying to figure out exactly what sparked the flames. Sources close to the investigation tell our nbc bay area Investigative Unit theyre focusing on electrical fencing on howell mountain. In a statement, the owner of the venue there says theyre aware of cal fires investigation and they are fully cooperating. Now to decision 2020 with just 33 days until the election the president ial Debate Commission promising changes after tuesdays ruckus faceoff in cleveland. Americans are weighing in on what they saw. President trump overnight in minnesota marking his own debate scorecard. Last night i did what the corrupt media has refused to do. Well, major blow to Airline Workers as two of the nations Largest Airline announce plans to furlough workers amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The impact will be felt as well right here in the bay area. So, lets check in with today in the bay kris sanchez live at San Francisco international with what we know so far. Good morning, kris. Hi, laura. What we know so far is that this is going to be devastating for a lot of bay area families, as you know. United has a really big hub here at sfo. So when there are cuts, we will feel them here at home. What we know at this point is that the planned airline furloughs will begin today, october 1st. 13,000 united Airline Workers will get that notice and 19,000 American Airlines workers will be notified. 25 million in Payroll Assistance Program and the negotiations in washington continue and the last round of federal aid expired yesterday. Now, Airline Travel is down 70 and despite cost cutting on behalf of the airlines, the airlines say they just cant keep people on the payroll without the federal assistance. Theres enormous bipartisan support for an extension of the Payroll Program which will keep those people employed and the only problem we have is we dont have a vehicle for getting it done. Dont have a backup plan. Ill be in the unemployment line like so many other people. Now, those letters that were sent out by the ceos, one of them the United Airline ceo called it a very sad day and then you heard from that Flight Attendant and union member saying there is no backup plan for her. That it is going to be getting in line for everybody else waiting for unemployment assistance. Nancy pelosi and treasury secretary mnuchin will negotiate again today as they did yesterday but the aid expired and so those notices are going out to employees and families are just starting to brace themselves. We will continue to follow those negotiations out of washington. Well bring you any news as soon as it happens because we know it hits very close to home. Kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thanks so much, kris. The pandemic affects so many things, that includes restaurants. Some of them are back open in San Francisco. This time now for indoor dining. China live on broadway street is set to set its tables and welcome diners inside. The owners say one of the challenges for them is they actually have so much space. So, for nearly 200 days they still have to pay rent and energy costs and now all restaurants in the city can have 25 capacity indoors up to 100 people. So that only means for assisting thousand square feet maybe only 40, 50 diners. But its a start. Its my favorite place when i heard they could open up and open up indoors, my first place i thought to visit. Must have Health Screenings for diners and you have to wear your mask at all time unless youre eating or drinking. Palo alto unified is bringing students and teachers back to campus. So they will start reopening in two weeks. Parents are asked to choose between hybrid or full Distance Learning for the rest of the school year. Now for those returning to the schools, they will have to follow all the social distancing rules. Earlier this week, some 300 parents, teachers and staff sent a letter to the district urging officials to rethink the opening plan. Well, this teacher is letting her students sleep in, at least for the moment. Its only 5 08. But another good rule is to get outside and, you know, especially during recess time. But is the weather going to cooperate today, kari . Its been so smoky. Ive been keeping the kids inside during those little breaks between the classes and weve been doing those exercise videos online. You just have to think of other ways to get out that energy today because we have several alerts were watching for today. We have the red flag warning that will be in effect for all of our bay area hills. Also the heat advisory is our temperatures crank up today. We do have a spare the air alert and were also being asked to conserve energy to keep from having any brown outs today. So, our temperatures will be very hot, especially for the interior valleys as we reach back into the triple digits. May set some new records again today as we reach up to 100 degrees in concord. 100 in morgan hill and napa today reaching 99 and 87 today in oakland while San Francisco will be in the upper 70s. Well talk more about this, as well as whats ahead for the weekend forecast. Thats coming up in a few minutes. Mike, hows it looking right now for the commute . Kari, right on pace. In fact, nothing to slow folks down. Really except for each other. Were talking about the Altamont Pass where 580 westbound slows a bit coming in towards the area out of 580 and 205. Little slowing and so many folks are able to get there without delay. An easy drive, no delays for these travel times towards the bay bridge. A little built at the richmond to san rafael bridge. Live look shows you traffic now showing up on the camera and well show you the bay bridge, which is starting to build a tad bit, as well, coming up. Back to you. Thanks so much, mike. 5 10. Hollywood struggling to survive. Next on today in the bay the allnew plea for help the movie industry is making to lawmakers this morning. At 5 25. Taking a look at how the nfl is facing its first big test in handling the coronavirus. Chris mentioned the negotiations in washington. Well take you down to the granular level on that. Wall street a bit hopeful about that this morning. Plus, heartbreak and sadness. What chrissy is saying. Right now at 5 13. As we head out the door in mountain view, our temperatures will start out nice and cool. Early hours looking to be the best throughout today because its going to be much hotter as we go from the low 60s to the upper 80s by early in the afternoon. Well take a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast coming up. And kari, the south bay Silicon Valley is clear and the travel times in the trivalley we showed you the map, nothing unexpected but a little build for the times through livermore and highway 84. A live look at the bay bridge. No problems on the span itself and backup at the toll plaza. None right now. Well give it a couple minutes and see if we have anything to show you. I think it should be clear by then. Well, goodern moing arning very happy thursday to you. In a few minutes well have something to show you. Jobless claims that well get at 5 30. While we wait, keeping our eye on washington and kris mentioned still no stimulus deal and democrats did pass one last spring but it was too rich for republicans blood. The white house turned it down, as well. Nancy pelosi is working with treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin on crafting a new one. So far the two sides cannot agree. The current bill returns the extra 600 a week federal unemployment payment, cuts another stimulus check for familie families, increasing funds to the post office and elections and adds new Financial Support for airlines. But, it sounds like that is going to come too late for united and american. Kris sanchez touched on that laying off tens of thousands of workers today. Had that bill come yesterday, it may have been a different story. Perhaps well see airlines wait until the very last second this morning to pull the trigger. Some good news on the financial front. The senate has passed an interim spending bill. The president just signed it a short time ago. That keeps the government open through the election. And california has just set a real estate record. The median house price for the whole state is now above 700,000. That would be a good price in the bay area. But were talking about the entire state here. Meanwhile, Mortgage Rates continue to fall. A 30year conforming fixed mortgage now the lowest its ever been at a little more than 3 . Adjustables are in the twos. Thats brought a lot of buyers into the market. The problem says is there still arent enough houses to satisfy demand. The increase just, weve never seen anything quite like it. There could be six to ten people, if not more in certain pockets, especially in the bay area, all competing for the same property. That keeps prices up, marcus and laura. Something that is certainly good for homeowners but very tough for people who are trying to make it in the bay by buying their own home. Yeah, especially that first one. All right, thanks, scott. Exactly. Cant say it fast enough. 5 16. New this morning hollywood asking congress for help. That includes theater owners, directors, producers and writers. They sent a letter to capitol hill asking for financial help or they fear small to midsize movie theaters will not survive the pandemic. And the impact will be felt throughout the entire industry. According to the letter, 93 of theaters have lost more than 75 of their revenues. Well, this next story never easy for a family to deal with. Chrissy teigen suffering a miscarriage following a recent hospitalization. Thats right. Teigen took to social media with the heartbreaking news. She was expecting baby number three with singer john legend. Teigen wrote in part, quote, we are in shock and only the deep pain you only hear about. The kind of pain we never felt before. Sharing a very personal photo, as well. Well, 5 17 for you this morning. Switching gears for you. Trending this morning, lakers star lebron james helping get out the vote with just 33 days ubti until the election. His new Voting Initiative recruited 10,000 poll workers according to a twitter post. To thank them, former president barack obama made the surprise appearance in a virtual crowd during last nights game. This is during the nba finals and the lakers and miami heat. So, the number of firsttime poll workers were also among the virtual fans. The lakers that ran away with game one, 116 to the heats 98. Look at this. Okay. How beautiful is that . Youre probably like, what is that . That is the moon right now. This is a live look for you over the bay area. Well, really over everywhere. But, still, how beautiful is this if you step outside and look up in the sky. I mean, just a beautiful shot. Beautiful way to start our thursday this morning. Meteorologist kari hall monitoring those conditions out there. So, im sure theres an explanation for the color of the moon this morning. Because of the smoke. Absolutely. Yeah, the smoky conditions make it appear orange. So, thats what were seeing right now. Getting ready for my commute in to the living room. Now, as we talk about whats going on around the fire, we are seeing our temperatures nice and cool this morning. This is our weather sensor that is just southwest of angwin. Cool temperatures in the early hours and calm wind and humidity is lower this morning compared to yesterday. But then as we go into today, were going to see it heating up pretty fast. Parts of the north bay reaching into the upper 90s and even over 100 degrees. As we take a look at all our microclimates. Were watching the weather conditions around the glass fire as well as the heat that well see for the inland east bay reaching up to 102 degrees in antioch today and 78 in San Francisco. 100 today in morgan hill. Heres another thing were watching. Our winds. And its going to start to pick up today. A red flag warning goes into effect at 1 00 this afternoon. Now, the wind starts out light but then check out the wind speeds for tomorrow as we go into the afternoon. Our winds are coming in from the northwest and at times really gusting high. You can see that Weather Forecast for morgan hill, 36mileperhour winds and then it starts to calm down as we head towards saturday. But our air quality is going to remain unhealthy for today in parts of the north bay, inland east bay and more of the same tomorrow with some slight improvements for the weekend. As we go into the weekend, were also going to see the High Pressure moving back just a little bit allowing for the heat to ease just a few more degrees. But we need every single break we can get because it seems like we havent had many breaks here this summer. And then our temperatures will be very hot for today and tomorrow. Well come back to the mid 80s by the end of the weekend. Mike, youve been watching the commute. How is it looking right now . Things are looking good, kari. Thank you for the update about your commute into the living room. I appreciate all the information we get from our friends. Were looking towards the maps. Green sensors show most of the story and little build out of the Altamont Pass. No surprises. Highway 84 sorting itself out and mostly that Altamont Pass area, as well. The north bay, the fire zones. Avoid any of the closures and as we look out towards the Golden Gate Bridge. A little slowing that showed up and a crash coming towards somewhere around the toll plaza and reported by chp. Obviously, no problems for these few cars traveling in to San Francisco. The bay bridge no backup. It did not form over the last few minutes. A few more cars, but thats about it. Back to you. All right, thank you very much, mike. Its 5 21. Remembering the life of Breonna Taylor. Next on today in the bay the bay area city that could soon sh showcase her in permanent artwork in her honor. Plus, working to tackle covid19. The historic move the nfl is being forced to make. This is due to positive cases on one team. But, first, nbc bay area responds. People make mistakes and that includes doctors. Their mistakes can be serious. You might be surprised to learn, however, that California Law does not require doctors to carry malpractice insurance. Same goes for dentists. Now, the office or hospital where they work might require malpractice insurance, but the state does not. You have a right to ask your doctor if he or she carries malpractice insurance. If you dont like the answer, you can find another doctor.
