Today in the bay continues right now. Good morning to you on this friday. Im Marcus Washington. And im laura garcia. Were going to check in with mike in a moment to see how the morning commute is looking, usually light on friday. Well check in with him nonetheless. Lets check in with kari who has a look at our forecast for today. And it looks so nice for today as the winds continue to calm down, but we do still have some concerns as we go into the weekend, so as we are seeing a calm wind the red flag warning has been allowed to expire, and so we are going to have much cooler temperatures this weekend. We are going to turn our attention to another high wind event that will be moving in, and this one looks a lot stronger than weve seen earlier this week. We are looking at highs that will reach into the low 70s for oakland today. Some upper 70s for the inland east bay as well as the north bay. Mike, how is it looking right now for the commute . Any issues . No surprises, kari. Its friday so a different pattern than most of the rest of the week. We look at the bay bridge toll plaza, a smooth, easy drive on the span and at the toll plaza no one even tapping the brakes. No need to do that. Watch your speed for safety sake, of course. Ive circled 880 near the bottom where the construction is both directions between 23rd and 29th. No slowing today because of, i believe, a lighter volume of traffic. The rest of the bay moves nicely. I will stop before they have to use that mute button on me. Lets talk about this. What a difference three weeks makes. Most of you political watchers probably agree last nights second and final president ial debate was a huge improvement. Kristen welker navigated through several issues allowing us to hear what each of the candidates had to say. First, their take on the covid shutdowns. Im going to shut down the virus not the country. Its his ineptitude that caused the country to have to shut down in large part, why business have is gone under, why schools are closed, why so many people have lost their living and why theyre concerned. His democrat governors, cuomo in new york, you look at whats going on in california, pennsylvania, north carolina. Democrats democrats all theyre shut down so side and theyre dying. Theyre dying. And he supports all these people. All he talks about are shutdowns. Were not going to shutdown. And on Health Care Biden points out that the president is yet to share a plan and the president says that biden has a socialist agenda. 10 Million People have lost their private insurance and he wants to take away 22 million more people who have it under obamacare and 110 Million People with preexisting conditions and all the people from covid will have preexisting conditions. What are they going to do . He wants socialized medicine and its not that he wants it, his Vice President she is more liberal than Bernie Sanders and wants it even more. Other topics included race, immigration and foreign policy. Marcus, more than 50 million americans have already voted, more than twothirds of all the votes President Trump has received in 2016. This morning were kicking off a brandnew segment called bay area votes. And its all about hearing from you and whats driving you to the polls. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us this morning. Shes been spending time listening to those voters. What do they have to say, kris . Reporter yeah, we had a little help from bob and cierra as well because we wanted to talk to as many people in different communities as possible. A lot of them have already dropped their ballots off in boxes like this one where we are at the s. A. P. Center in san jose. A lot of folks energized to get it done early. California is one of nine states that sent ballots to all registered voteers this year in an effort to keep voters safe in the pandemic. 21. 6 million ballots in california were sent to registered voters. And according to the california secretary of state nearly 5 million were already returned as of this week. Election officials will start counting the votes on election day, not before, and will continue until 17 days after the election or until theyre done, whichever is first. With 11 days to go, we asked voters why do you vote . I feel like we feel the intensity of it more this year. I think this time right now is unlike any time before. Decisions that affect my lives and everyones lives around us. Where the country is heading. I feel particularly passionate about the president , but generally i always vote. Who we put in office should represent us and our morals and what we expect from our government. It is probably the most critical in history. Be the change that you want to be. Reporter now that guy is voting for the very first time, just 19 years old. You still have time to plan your vote. Make sure you dont wait until the last minute to return your ballot. If youre mailing it, it has to be postmarked by november 3rd. Verify your ballot box is legitimate through your county registr registrars office. Check the signature on your i. D. Before you sign your ballot to see what election workers are trying to match so that you dont get rejected. And this might sound silly but only vote once. You may have gotten more than one ballot, like my husband did, because of a change in your registration. Returning more than one is a felony so throw the duplicate in the trash. Next week well talk about voting and the integrity of the election, voter trends among women, minorities, young voters, conservative voters. But we are starting with women. So, ladies, join the conversation on facebook and twitter. Tell us if things feel different this election or whether things are feeling pretty much the same. And dont forget we have a comprehensive voter guide on nbcbayarea. Com. Were not just talking about the president ial election which is clearly top of mind, but we have all of the propositions statewide there as well as some local measures youll want to know how they impact your community. In san jose kris sanchez, today in the bay. 5 37 for you right now. And the highly publicized case of Scott Peterson will be back in court today. Today in the bays Sharon Katsuda is live for us at san quentin prison where peterson is locked up currently. Talk to us why its getting a second look. Reporter records show Scott Peterson is now 47 years old and he is housed here at san quentin. Earlier this month the California Superior Court ordered it reexamined due to possible juror misconduct. His death sentence was overturned on an appeal in august. A judge will determine today whether peterson needs a public defender or hire his own attorney. Peterson will not be in the courtroom. He will appear from here by video at san quentin. Peterson was convicted in 2004 of murdering his wife, laci peterson, and their unborn son, connor. During the investigation, it was revealed peterson was having an affair before the disappearance of his eightmonth pregnant wife laci. Its sure to be an emotional day with limited seating in the courtroom because of covid restrictions. Reporting live at san quentin, im Sharon Katsuda, today in the bay. All right, sharon, thank you. Developing for you this morning a memorial is growing in South Berkeley where a young, pregnant woman was shot and killed in the driveby shooting wednesday night. She had all the Leadership Qualities to do whatever she wanted to do in life. Right now police are not commenting on the investigation or if theyre pursuing any leads. Henderson leaves behind a young son. One year to the day of the start of the kincade wildfire our Investigative Unit obtained findings on the cause. Cal fire says it was started by a dormant pg e line that should have been dismantled because it was no longer needed. The line once provided power to a now closed geo thermal plant outside of geyserville. The fire burned 77,000 acres destroying 174 homes. So we remain in the hot weather, high fire danger. Its dry out there. Weather really plays a key role in all of this. Today is friday. We keep talking about it. Lets look at the south bay and a typical pattern. Ive circled 101 northbound where theres a little slowing right on schedule, lighter as we should see on a friday, predictable for the calendar as well. Here someone ran out of gas 280 at highway 1. Should be over to the shoulder quickly. Well track that. If youre running out the gas, push through. It is friday. Get over to the bay bridge without any problem. A nice smooth flow to the toll plaza. Just a little slowing on the incli incline. Well see how the live looks shape up. Marcus . Putting the brakes of a different kind on right now. President trump says their parents dont want to be found. In the meantime federal judges on the west coast are blocking white house efforts to not include undocumented residents in the 2020 census. The case is challenging the president s executive order which seeks to exclude anyone in the country illegally. The judge ruled such an order is unconstitutional. It comes after the Supreme Court recently agreed to review a similar case out of new york. A new legal defeat for Ride Share Companies in their effort to keep drivers off the books, a state Appeals Court has upheld an order for companies to treat drivers as employees rather than independent contractors. The decision will not have an immediate impact. Thats because it wont take effect for at least 30 days.
