Its still going to be breezy but not as windy as this morning, and were looking at temperatures today that will be a little bit warmer than normal but fairly mild with palo alto reaching 75. 76 in oakland. And in San Francisco a high of 73 degrees. Well talk about some of the highest wind gust weve measured and whats ahead in the forecast in a few minutes. Mike, how is it looking for the morning commute . I want to show our friends behind me the light yellow highlighting that is not fog. Thats where the road weather index is going to be gusty for drivers in many places. You head up the hills throughout san jose, the south bay, looking to the north bay as well with the same highlighting. The antioch bridge and the benicia bridge, a concern but not a major problem for drivers. Thank you, mike. We are continuing our Team Coverage on the biggest wind event to hit the bay area so far. If you look at your screen all of those little yellow areas are folks who are without power this morning. 225,000 pg e customers across Northern California. You can see its all around the bay. The triangles you see were power shutoffs preventing things like live wires from falling and sparking a fire. And we are under that red flag warning as power is out for thousands of people and those strong wind gusts across the bay area. Today in the bays bob redell is live in dublin where at least one tree has already come down. Bob . Reporter correct, kris. I live here in the east bay and heard the wind whipping through our house last night. Im sure a lot of you heard it. We have a lull right now, but its been very gusty out here. You can see this is one of many trees thats come down here in the east bay. Theres some down in concord and san leandro. Were outside the jail in dublin. We believe this tree came down on a patrol car. Someone cut the tree into pieces and the car has been removed. No one was hurt. Now this is why were under the red flag warning and why firefighters are taking it so seriously as they always do. Case in point early this morning at 12 45 a brush fire burned through three to four acres in the Castro Valley along eastbound 580 before the eden canyon exit. Alameda county fire responded with 11 units. Thats how aggressive they were in putting out the fire and keeping it from turning into something bigger and more dangerous. A live look at the power outage map from the pg e website, the utility performed power safety shutoffs throughout the bay area especially in the north bay and here in the east bay. Over 16,000 customers are without power in alameda county. Over 15,000 in Contra Costa County. Before power went out in lafayette in Contra Costa County residents stocked up on supplies. The local Ace Hardware Store says they sold out of gas heaters, power generators. Theyve been sold out for days. A few people have been able to pick them up in neighboring counties. Fire is very, very possible, and thats just the biggest thing that worries us. I am virtually out of flashlights, those types of things. Just huge numbers. I am staying home. Youre going to ride out the red flag warning . I am. Reporter pg es website indicates that power be turned back on by 10 00 tonight depending on where you live if your power is out. They need to inspect the equipment once the winds die down. Reporting live in dublin, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you, bob. Bob was just telling us the overnight howling winds in some cases doing more than just keeping people awake in concord. The winds brought down a tree near concord high school. The tree fell right between two homes, fortunately, and nobody was hurt. A number of parks in the east bay will be closed today because of those strong winds. Several parks were closed over the weekend as well as that dangerous weather moved in. The goal was to keep people out of places like tilden park to reduce fire danger and lower other risks as well. Cal fire is staffing up, prepositioning crews to help local agencies in areas that are under threat. And the oakland zoo on the list of places that may shut down over the next couple of days because of the power shutoffs. The zoo says it was told by pg e it will likely have to close today and tomorrow, tuesday, a final decision will be made early this morning. Well let you know when that is. In napa county several School Districts are closing because of the psps shutoffs and the threat of fires. The only School District only for inperson hybrid learning is in the napa Valley School system. And four School Districts closing, the kenwood and montgomery districts announcing all schools are closed meaning no inperson learning and no virtual classes either. Students are asked to do their own learning at home. So, parents, if they say they dont have work, theyre not telling the truth. Meteorologist kari hall is constantly updating her forecast on social media throughout the day, so make sure you let friends and neighbors know that if they are in the dark. And more women than men have exercised that right to vote since Ronald Reagan earned his second term all the way back to 1984. Over the last few weeks weve talked with a lot of voters including a lot of women who are casting ballots in this years election. Up to now 1 of californias voters were women and theyve been more likely to vote democratic but 2020 is a unique year for women. Consider that the balance of the Supreme Court is about to shift with the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett which could impact reproductive rights and the incumbent President Trump has been accused of Sexual Misconduct against women. And the democratic Vice President ial nominee is a california woman. We asked bay area women voters whether this all impacts their vote. I love kamala and shes part of the election and that there is a female voice, but i dont think its changing my vote. We try to support women candidates whenever they align with my views. Theres a lot of stuff right now around womens reproductive rights, but its really important as women to make sure were voting the right way so we can all have a choice in that matter. Theres a statewide proposition, prop 16, which would restore affirmative action in california allowing universities and government offices to consider gender in admissions and hiring decisions which california voters outlawed 25 years ago. Vote by mail ballots are in the county Registrars Office by the thousands. Well talk recordbreaking Voter Registration including in santa clara which hits the million voter mark for the first time ever. Early voter turnout is also shattering bay area records. The press democrat reports 45 of registered voters in Sonoma County already cast their ballots with nine days left as of yesterday. The total blows past the old record at the same point which was 2008 when that was 27 . Our website has a complete voter guide for the state proposition and ballot issues in every county. You can find information about voting by mail and official dropoff locations. You can go to nbcbayarea. Com election guide for all of that. And we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall because we know the winds are still whipping. Yes, we not only have strong winds but i wanted to show you the relative humidity this morning. And when you have relative humidity levels below 30 , the air is very dry. And we get that along with those rushing winds. And a lot of these relative humidity numbers are down in the teens so the air is crisp, it dries out the vegetation even more. When you get winds rushing across that vegetation all it takes is a small spark and things can quickly get out of control. I wanted to show you some of our wind gusts weve measured over the past 24 hours in spots like santa rosa where our winds have made it up 40 Miles Per Hour. 41 in concord. San francisco 37 Miles Per Hour. Compare that to oakland where the winds gusted up to 57 and san jose 26mileperhour gusts. Were going to take a look at how high the winds have been on our mountain tops coming up in a few minutes. Mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute . Kari, honestly its looking confusing. Behind me the map, first of all, is yellow. The portion highlighted at the bottom of your screen as we take the map is where the higher winds are registering throughout the south bay. The crash and the hazards, the exclamation point, are the bulk that come into chp. They are table that is have fallen and theres a small spark, a small fire. Im just going to leave them as theyve been marked. The latest was here, 580 and 24 down line. And you can see that the fire is not the only challenge. The wind there whipping those flames. This all happened about 9 00 last night at a uhaul business on monument in concord. A firefighter did get it out of control before it spread to nearby businesses. They arent saying yet how the fire started. And we know the wind is affecting our commute. Kari, the winds will continue throughout the morning. We are going to see some high winds through at least 11 00 this morning. We are expecting some of our top wind gusts could reach the bay air yao right around sunrise. Weve already had some extreme winds especially in some of our hill tops where we are seeing those gusts up to 89 miles an hour in mt. St. Helena. 63 in calaveras road. Mt. Diablo reaching high wind gusts at 56 Miles Per Hour. So we are still in with this high fire danger through tomorrow morning, even as the winds gradually start to calm down. We still could have some of those wind gusts along with some very low humidity as we go into tomorrow. But we also have this wind advisory that will continue for today and once again thats up until 11 00 this morning as we can see the Mountain Wind gusts continue up to 70 miles an hour and then for the north bay we see also some frosty conditions. That will be in effect for parts of lake and mendocino counties up until 9 00 this morning. Lets get a look at our wind speed forecast. Winds still coming in up to 36 Miles Per Hour in santa rosa and a lot of dry winds coming in from the east and northeast are bringing in some very low humidity, relative humidity numbers have been in the teens. And then as we go into tonight here we are at 5 00 and were seeing winds about 15 to 20 miles an hour calming down for tonight and then as we go into tomorrow its still going to be a light wind but not as windy. And so High Pressure moving in after that strong storm system moves just to our east that brought in some snow over colorado. And then over the next several days there will be another chance that we could get another high wind event by the end of the week, so well be watching that. Lets go through our temperatures the next seven days as well see highs reaching into the mid to upper 70s. At least temperature wise its going to be very nice and hopefully we can make it through the next 24 hours without any major fires. Then well have to turn our attention to the end of the week even though our temperatures stay mild, we are going to have another gust of some high winds between thursday and friday so, of course, ill be watching that. Mike, what are you watching for the morning commute . Ive seen a lot of smaller fires on the report as we look at our map, talking about a smooth drive. If you are a raiders fan you probably lived this over the weekend, but the team was supposed to play on nbc sunday night football. A lastminute change moved them to a sunday afternoon spot, and now we are learning that that could cost the team plenty. Raiders lineman tested positive and the entire offensive line was sent home. Only brown and safety abrams were not allowed to play yesterday but the league says brown was not wearing his Contact Tracing device, which is a requirement of the nfl, and linemen often met without masks during practice. The fine could be heavy because the team has a record of violations already. By the way, adding insult to injury, the raiders lost to tampa, 4520. So i guess they needed that practice. Well, watch out nfc west. The niners have their mojo back proving that yesterday in new england where they dismantled Bill Belichick and the patriots.
