KNTV Today In The Bay July 11, 2024

Good friday morning to you. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Of course vianey is in for mike but first lets get to the forecast. Kari hall is tracking that. And were starting out cold again this morning as we see mostly clear skies. Taking a look at what to expect as you head out the door. We have some freezing temperatures again in ukiah and clear lake. Most of the rest of the bay area in the upper 30s and lower 40s. And then after this chilly start once again well see the same weather weve seen all throughout the week where it warms up nicely for the rest of today and well enjoy some sunshine and light winds. Well talk about the fire danger ahead in the forecast coming up. Vianey, any issues for Early Morning commuters . It looks like overnight crashes have cleared up quite nicely leaving for pretty open space with the exception of a little bit of slowing along 280. Aside from that, though, it could be construction. I havent seen any reports of clearing crashes in the area. Take a look at the bay bridge. I just wanted to show this to you because it looks beautiful at night. You can see the traffic flowing along nicely. Ill have a closer look at how the rest of the bay area is doing. The drive times are up next. Thank you very much, vianey. Developments fast and furious on the vaccine front. Today marks the critical deadline to order the initial rounds of vaccine. California will receive somewhere north of 300,000 doses in its first shipment. Of course Senior Care Centers and Frontline Health workers are getting first priority. Pfizer, meantime, says it has a glitch in its Global Supply chain and only expects to deliver 50 million doses between now and new years day worldwide. Next year pfizer still hopes to ship more than 1 billion doses. Well, theres no denying the latest covid surge is unprecedented. As you can see right here, well, the current spike in Santa Clara County mirrors the state. Cases are higher than they ever were over the summer and has led to some south bay facilities suffering their first ever outbreaks. Amber wood gardens nursing home has more than 150 cases. The citys homeless shelter has seen a spike of 60 cases over the past week. Residents have been moved to hotel rooms. Due to those rising case as new stayathome order is likely and could start mid month and hinges on how many icu beds are available in each county. Once the county dips below 15 capacity that triggers a stayathome order. Santa clara county is at 17 . Sonoma county in rough shape, less than 1 capacity. At last check it only had three icu beds remaining. The governor broke the state into five regions the bay area, northern california, greater sacramento, san joaquin volley, and southern california. The bay area includes monterey and santa cruz counties. The governor says some regions could get shut down in just a day or two. Business owners in the east bay are bracing for another round of closures. The shutdowns would include hair salons, bars and restaurants. Frustration in the Small Business community there is mounting. If thats the case i probably have to lay off most of my people again and its christmastime. No fun for them or anybody. But situations seem dire. These Small Businesses arent the problem. Outdoor dining isnt the issue. Its the people acting a fool out there that arent taking care of themselves and the people close to them. The Alameda County Health Department has put businesses and people who live there on notice. A victory for california churches. The Supreme Court has ordered a lower federal court to reexamine the states covid restriction on church services. This comes in the wake of high courts narrowly siding with churches and synagogues in new york. And it means attorneys here will seek an Immediate Court order to allow indoor worship to resume. Some believe the reversal may happen here before christmas. Others argue that new yorks ruling sprang from a far different set of circumstances than those here in california. B. A. R. T. Just finalized new deals with its three largest unions. It ensures no messy strikes for at least the next three and a half years, some critics question the timing of those new deals especially in light of b. A. R. T. Hemorrhaging tens of millions of dollars talking about early retirement not to mention possible layoffs. B. A. R. T. Does point out salary hikes are strictly tied to higher ridership numbers. Rent is plummeting in the bay area. It looked at the biggest cities in the nation and found rent is dropping for both one and twobedroom apartments. Since the beginning of the pandemic until now rent has dropped around 25 in San Francisco. According to a report San Francisco had the biggest plunge in the nation. In san jose rent dropped about 14 and in the east bay more than a 13 drop in oakland. Okay, here we go, team. It is friday morning. Obviously very early, but were going to get through it this morning. A chilly start once again, kari. Yeah, weve had these dry weather conditions. I wanted to show you whats coming down the line, something were watching as we go into the weekend. Well have a cold front coming in. It looks like the rain dries up before it gets here. There will be a slight chance we could see spotty sprinkles in parts of the north bay between saturday night and sunday and then back to dry weather as we go into early next week. Now were also watching out for the potential of some high winds especially going into sunday night and monday. And that is when we could see the winds picking up. Well be watching the north bay because there will be a high fire danger coming along with those winds. So ill talk about the Drought Conditions that were seeing right now. The time line and how we are going to really have to keep a close eye on the forecast going into early next week. Vianey has been watching the roads this morning. Any new issues popping up . No new issues which is something we like to hear in the Traffic Department because usually overnight we get a couple of fender benders and it looks like they have cleared out. Aside from that, though, im noticing a little bit of that slowing from san jose heading to palo alto. I have not been able to pinpoint what it is. Lets take a look at some of the bridge drive times. Westbound 580 to the Richmond Bridge seven minutes. Westbound 82 to the san mateo bridge only 12 minutes. So no major slowdowns at this hour. Marcus, ill send it over to you. Thanks, vianey. 4 37 this morning. Testing positive, still ahead the second covid case governor Gavin Newsoms team is dealing with this morning. Plus, queue up the christmas cheer. Once a month. Is proven to reduce monthly migraine days. For some, by half or more. Dont take aimovig if youre allergic to it. High Blood Pressure can happen or worsen with aimovig. Common side effects include injection site reactions and constipation. It doesnt matter what each day brings. So long as you can say. I am here. Aim. To be there more. Talk to your doctor about aimovig. Good friday morning. Right now at 4 40 as you head out the door in the east bay were starting out with some mostly clear conditions, but take a look at how cold its going to be as youre driving to work, upper 30s. Turn on the heater in the car. We wont need the heater later today as the sun warms us up. Well talk about what were watching for the weekend coming up. If youre driving in from the trivalley, lets take a look at the drive times for you that morning, westbound 580 to 680 looking at 18 minutes. Southbound 680 only about a tenminute commute. Were going to see that continue today with a chilly morning and overall a nice and sunny afternoon. By tomorrow well start to see more clouds moving in and the chance we could see some spotty light rain moving in for the north bay. After that well have to watch out for a high fire danger and that increases as we get gusty winds and dry conditions continuing. Lets get you through today. I know youre just trying to make it through home schooling on this friday in the south bay. San jose is going to see those temperatures in the 50s and by about 10 00 this morning were at 54 degrees and reaching into the mid60s. Let the kids run around in the backyard and play and enjoy this nice day. We are once again looking at some changes as we start to see this weather system coming in that will bring in more clouds tomorrow and then the models are putting down just a little bit of light rain. Doesnt look like a big weather maker here but it is good to at least see the increase in humidity and moisture for parts of the north bay thats been critically dry dealing with an extreme drought at this point and the models are only showing a very light amount of rain, the potential of a few hundredths of an inch up to a tenth around ukiah. We do see the extreme Drought Conditions for all of these areas shaded in red and that includes much of the north bay and then it gets a little bit less dry as you head down to the Central Coast and southern california. Now that we are seeing the moderate Drought Conditions, the fire danger will increase with the breezy winds, warm temperatures and looking at still the fire danger continuing into next week.
