San francisco . The Decision Just came down about 45 minutes ago. And a trip through the high sierra. Many of us have never seen. Were talking to two hikers who mapped out a brand new 200mile trek. Good evening. Im raj mathai. Sadly it is not getting much better. We have updated information from maui. The governor in hawaii just ending his briefing a few minutes ago. The death toll stands at 53 people. Governor josh green addressing the state the country saying re deaths are expected. We are seeing loss of life here. As you know, the number has been rising and we will continue to see loss of life. We have extraordinary professionals working on this job. Hundreds of buildings and homes have burned to the ground. The staow looking for places to hou thousandsf pe who lost their homes. Much of the popular tourist town of lahaina leveled by this wildfire. The Historic District in lahaina is home to more than 60 landmarks. Front str which isl ko to tourists, home to restaurants, bars, and stores, most of it destroyed. We thought we were okay but then the wind came, the gas stations blew up. We heard the propane tanks just going off one, two, three. Reporter what did you do . We just packed up what we could in our house. Couldnt get much. Left all our pictures. Everything we own was kind of in that house. It is happening to so many locals and tourists trying to get out of there. Hawaii is receiving federal help. Also from california Governor Newsom is sending 11 searchandrescue members to help to search for survivors. We will have much more coverage on what is happening in maui and how you can help coming up in just a few minutes. Lets get you caught up on our other headlines. The big decision in San Francisco. Get ready for more driverless taxies. About 45 minutes ago two Companies Just got the okay. The California Public Utilities Commission voting 31 to allow crews and waymo to collect fares via driverless cars. And to operate 24 7 in San Francisco. That Decision Just confirmed after hours of Public Comment and debate. More than 200 people signed up to weigh in on this matter. Among the speakers several members of the disabled community who seem divided on the driverless cars. My concern is that we dont yet have an agreement on what accessibility looks like for our community. We dont yet have vehicles on the road or even in pilot programs that serve our Community Needs i am here at puc to support Autonomous Vehicle deployment in San Francisco because this represents an amazing opportunity to increase transportation for blind people. Really a seminole moment for the bay area and beyond by allowing the Driverless Technology to take over the streets 24 7. Hundreds of people showed up before the meeting even started, some opposing the robo taxies while others were in support of the new technology. Our senior investigator was at the meeting tonight and will have a full breakdown on our 11 00 newscast. Also this evening, the large fire by the port of oakland is finally out but the Health Concerns linger in the area. This is schnitzer Metal Recycling plant near jack london square, part of our breaking News Coverage just last night. While the flames and smoke are now gone, the concern is the smoke. The fire started last night around 5 30, almost immediately people began reporting an acid smell as smoke spread across the bay area. One preschool less than a mile away told us they decided to keep the kids inside today. It was very acrid lie burning rubber and metal. Clearly not a healthy smell. Reporter you kept the kids inside. Yes. All day. The air Quality Management district says air quality levels are relatively normal. That is the good into us. However, the Quality Management district continues to suggest anyone with respiratory issues to take precautions. Lets get back to the deadly fires in maui. People trapped there trying to get back to the mainland and the locals scrambling to figure out what is next in their lives. Getting off the island is not easy. Leaving lahaina as everything burned around them. This video shows two men leaving lahaina on their motorcycles. You hear the hum of the bikes and see embers flying toward them and flames on either side of the road. They managed to make it out safely but one did lose his home in the fire. We also spoke with matthew robb a california native who courns the dirty monkey a bar right on front street. His landlord shot this video on tuesday and you can see the bar and its neighbors are gone. Robb and his coworkers were already out of the area and closed up shop and evacuated when the winds started to pick up. I started crying a little bit because all of our heart and work and our life went into this thing. Right now the bar is the last thing on our mind. The first thing is to secure your team and make sure friends and family are all safe. We are hearing from bay area residents still in maui including a woman who is waiting to get back to lahaina to get her belongings and eventually come back to the bay area. It is a long journey. Good to see you smiling and healthy and safe here. Tell us what you went through these last 48 hours especially on Tuesday Morning when you left lahaina. We left lahaina and it was 5 00 a. M. There was no electricity. The water was still on thankfully. We had decided at 10 00 a. M. To head over and thankfully we made the decision and had no idea what was going to happen but when we got in the road it was backtoback traffic. My friend is very familiar with lahaina and we were able to get on the front road. We were being hit and pelted by branches falling down. The wind was absolutely just hurricane style winds. We got out of the area and to a safe place and did not know what was going on until we decided to go back. It was mayhem. Where are you right now . How long was the journey . Are you at a hotel or apartment . Two hours. It took two hours to get to this location. What is next for you . Are you going to try to go back to lahaina . We are waiting for the roads to open. Wed like to get back over there to get our belongings. I have called the red cross to see if there is any volunteer opportunities as well. Thas very nicor you t do. Is yourlan toet back to th area . Do y have a flightbo . I do. My flight isbooked. I am solid o. I hearyreaking flights out here so i feel confident i would like to get my things before heading home. There is a fire somewhat nearby. Are you seeing any smoke from lahaina. It looks okay. Tell us what youre seeing. Actually behind me was where the fire was and i am not sure if you can see it but the mountain was on fire when we got here. We were a little nervous about getting evacuated from here as well. Were you fearful driving through the wind storm on tuesday . Absolutely. My friends were heckling me a little bit because i was so frightened and afraid the trees would come tgh the car it saw thingust upro and so many power lines down and hitting all the trees. This is not good. And that was at 10 00 a. M. I believe the fire started at 11 00. We got very lucky. Indeed you did. We hope you get back here to the bay areaafely. Ank you. Thank you so much. Moving on here is another view of what is left behind. This video taken from an nbc helicopter right above town there. Earlier today a little bit of smoke remaining with most of the flames gone. Some pockets of the area were spared but the rest devastated there. You can also see the scope of the destruction from the new satellite images. Lets bring in nbcs Audrey Asistio with a closer look. The images out of maui are devastating. Weve obtained before and after Satellite Photos of the island showing the aftermath of the deadly wild fires. Aook right here. This is a wide view of lahaina, theal capital of haw thi big building righte afe way. This little areas where the outlets are. And down below is the area where a lot of the tourists visit with the shops, restaurants, pier, bannon tree with the old courthouse. The main area where tourists usually visit. This is the before. And that is the after. Mauis west side reduced to ashes. I want to take a closer look at the tourist area where the beloved banyan tree is, 150yearold tree landmark damaged in this fire. This is the old courthouse and the pier and front stree where a lot of the tourists like to eat, do shopping, and even a school down here so this is the before and, sadly, that is the after. The fire spared none of it. You can see these images for yourself if you want to. We did put them on our website nbc bay area. Com. Thank you. Tourists are still told of course to just stay away from maui. Cancel plans. A lot of people are listening. We saw only a small number of people boarding flights to go to maui simply going back to help family members they told us. Major airlines are swinging into action. American, southwest, hawaiian, alaska all say the main priority is right now to help people leave. Canceling the Vacation Rentals is another story. Lets bring in our consumer investigator chris kimora. This is an evolving story. The governor is saying dont come to hawaii or maui yet people are saying okay. Lets cancel but theres been pushback. Whats happening . We have seen reports online that there are some Vacation Rental hosts telling people, forget the disaster declaration. Forget the disaster. You got to come. Youve got to come take your trip. Or at least pay. If you cancel ill keep your is this airbnb . Vrbo . It is all over the place. We reached out to both airbnb and brbo today to ask is this cool . Airbnb basically said no. What they are doing is saying that theyve activated the extenuating circumstances policy to cancel penalty free with guests receiving a full refund. We wanted more detail about that. We didnt get all of the things we wanted but airbnb did tell us if you have a reservation log into the and go to your reservation. There should be a flag that tells you whether you have an eligible stay and should get a refund. Even if it is not there, and you think you should fall under the policy and be able to cancel and get your money back, contact them so you can have a one on one. Airbnb. Vrbo is no the stating this right now. Very different story. We reached out today and did not get an answer for them. In the New York Times we saw vrbos already waived host penalties which means hosts can cancel and refund guests without worrying how it will affect their performance in future guest searches. Here we are concerned about their performance and their stars instead of the customers. The consumer reporter is not pleased with that and would like to hea from vrboecause i imagine when we open the mail box the next coupleays or weeks we might find people having issues. That being said we havent heard from vrbo and the line is open. We would like a reply as soon as possible. Nice movie just saw from United Airlines saying they are sending out empty planes to maui to bring people back. Good pr and just good humanitarians. The right thing to do. Thank you, chris. Before we move on a lot of people are asking how can i help . Two good places to start. The Hawaii Community foundation and the maui united way. The county of maui says both are accepting monetary donations. Find links to help the people i maui. Go to nbc bay area. Com and our app. We posted the safe links right on our front page. All right. Up next the most extensive journey through the sierra since the creation of the world famous john muir trail. Well introduce you to the two hikers who mapped it out. There they are. They are smiling. fefeel the powower of oststeo biflexex®. tataken every y day, its clilinically shshown toto improve j joint comfoft in 7 d days, wiwith signifificant improrovt ovover time. Toto improve j joint comfoft in 7 d days, welcome back to nbc bay area news tonight. We are going way back to 1915. The sierra club created the world famous john muir trail considered the eeminent trail through california. About 200 miles from yosemite down to mount whitney. John muir was a famed environmentalist, a Founding Member of the sierra club. Now we have a new trail called the sierra Grand Traverse and is documented in this new guide book. It is meant for experienced hikers. Youll see spectacular views of the alpine lakes, high sierra meadows, mountain passes, and a whole lot more. The whole route takes between 25 and 45 days depending on skill level and speed. The guide book was written by monica and john chapman who spent half the year in australia and the other half of course hiking. Monica and john are in california now and join us from mammoth lakes. Nice to have you on the program. Two australians writing a book about california. Monica, why do this . Thanks for having us on. Why do this . We walked the sierra high route in 2015 and when we were down into the valleys we were wondering why arent we up there on the tops . Because that is where we like to be up above the tree line. John spent three years researching the passes and puttingogether thioute and we ck in 2019 and walked it and spent ha 45 days or so. You did a lot of research but how much was the actual hiking . The hiking is just as monica said 45 days hiking and weve repeated other pieces to get photos and images because we had smoke the first time in some places from wild fires. We are experienced and have written a lot of books in australia as well. We were surprised no american had ever written it up or thought about it so we filled the gap in. This is amazing. Any pushback from the sierra club or people from the john muir trail . Not yet. Hopefully not a all. But wead had some feek from hikers met along the trail. We were here for six or seven weeks and they were thrilled there would be this new adventure available with notes and pretty pictun tk as well. I think you have a lot of people excited. Final question. Im not at your level as a hiker but is there a way to do this trail maybe a smaller four or five day version . Yes you can do some parts of itment certainly Section Three only half crosses the john muir trail and probably section 5 down past mount whitney. It is not so difficult. Certainly quite a lot of access on trials to do day hikes as well or just overnighters. That is fabulous. Monica and john chapman, appreciate your time. Good luck with the guide book and travel safe back to australia whenever you are going back. Appreciate it. Thank you. We are out for a couple months so a while yet. Very nice. Lets move on now. Here comes the music and the crowds outside lands is here. The sold out, three day festival kicking off tomorrow. Today we stopped by Golden Gate Park to kind of check it out and see how the preparations are going. Close to a hundred performers will be hitting the stage this weekend. Headliners include kendrick lamar, foo fighters, and odeza. Not just the music. The festival features 100 restaurants nearly all of them from the bay area. If you can get a ticket now or get it on the secondary market do it. It is a great festival. A live look from our tower camera with the fog rolling through.
