KNTV Today July 4, 2024

Headed back to school today, the serious concerns over Pedestrian Safety this morning, plus an update on the ongoing investigation. Some of us got burned on our arms because we had to go through the fire. Theres space, but its so hot that you can feel it. As the recovery search intensifies on maui, were hearing harrowing stories of survival from the island. Now one San Francisco family was able to make it out of the burning chaos alive. Plus, sounding the alarm about our kids and Mental Health. The all new warning from pediatricians. This is today in the bay. Thanks so much for joining us on this wednesday morning. Im kris sanchez in more marcus washington. Good to have you. Im laura garcia. Big day for thousands of students across the bay area. More than 20 Different School districts starting up today, including Los Altos School district, napa valley unified. Have a great year, kids. Lets list them all. Thats a lot of first day forecasts. Were starting out mild across the bay area. You might want to wear shorts, tshirts. Its a nice start. As we take a look at our live view in San Francisco, were going to see fog over the bay clearing out really quickly. As we get a look at our fremont forecast for the first day of school, the dropoff line will be nice and everyone smiling and welcoming each other back. Its going to be in the mid60s to start and then at pickup time, theyll be like, oh, its hot, can you turn on the airconditioning. Its going to be in the mid80s. Were taking a look at all of our high temperatures around the bay area. Yes, it is definitely still summer. Were hitting 99 in concord and livermore today, and 92 in napa. So well talk about whats ahead coming up. Mike, it seems like its wednesday light . Its wednesdaywednesday. It looked like it was going to be a tough wednesday, things backed up early at the bay bridge toll plaza. Then it kind of held to middle lanes coming off the 880 entrances. A smooth flow of traffic, so its just out of the may. Nothing major. Just a steady flow of traffic. We do see the build through richmond for west 80. I was concerned about this crash west 37, the commute direction at 121. The earlier crash cleared. Weve had some recovery but theres still more build coming out of vallejo, typical. Same thing with concord and walnut creek. The south bay, the early slowing that started to get more focused in san jose looks like its kind of calming down, but well track it. A tragic crash in San Francisco leaves an important reminder this morning, which happens to be the first day back to school for San Francisco unified. Last night a 4yearold girl in a stroller and her father were hit by an suv at a crosswalk near oracle park. Sadly, that little girl died. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live in San Francisco. Ginger, this is really a sad reminder to people that we need to slow down and pay attention. Reporter thats right, kris and laura. Especially on a day like today when tens of thousands of children will be crossing the streets just a few hours from now, making their way back into the classroom, because as you mentioned, it is the first day back to school for San Francisco unified. Going back to last nights story, we do not have an update on the dads condition this morning. He was brought to San Francisco general last night to be treated for lifethreatening injuries. His 4yearold daughter, tragically, did not make it. Now, this was the scene at 4th and king streets where that fatal accident happened. Its a block away from oracle park in San Francisco around the china and mission bay neighborhood. The mercedes suv was still at the scene two hours after the crash. The driver was there cooperating with the investigation. Sfpd has not given many details about the actual crash. They did, however, say the scene was chaotic, as emergency crews fought to get the suv off of the child. They also confirmed that the family at the center of this tragic accident is from out of town. We learned more details from a man that was driving this white pickup, who says he saw things unfold. He agreed to share what he saw as long as we did not show his face or give his name. Like im telling the Police Officer, i was the one that waved them to go ahead because they had the right, they had still 20 seconds on that timer. Reporter now, he says the family, which is the mom, the dad and the little girl who was in a stroller, which the dad was pushing, began to cross when the driver of the suv turned from the middle righthand turn lane. He says the light was green for the driver and for him to turn, but the intersection is marked as a pedestrian crossing. That family, the witness says, had a lot of time still to get across the street. Now, sfpd says drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in this. But a cautionary tale and a very sad one, as you mentioned, kris, this morning, especially as we remind drivers, everyone on the road, to slow down and keep your eyes on the road on this first day of school. Back to you guys. Those traffic patterns are changing so dramatically right now. I feel sorry for that family. Thank you, ginger. Recovery teams are searching fireravaged parts of maui for victims. We now have learned the death toll from the fires is up to 106 people. Officials say they will start the process of identifying the victims today. About 1,300 people are still unaccounted for. Authorities are warning that the fires could pose longterm health risks to residents because of the chemical compounds now contaminating the air and the water. Officials say the cost of all of that damage to maui could go up to about 7 billion. Weve heard so many harrowing stories about people fighting to survive the fastmoving inferno. A San Francisco family that escaped the flames jumped into the ocean. Theyre now sharing their video and story of survival. The soto family says as the flames grew around them, they parked their car and jumped off a ledge into the water. Waves slammed against them as they just attempted to hold onto the rocks. The siblings say they kept their eyes closed most of the time because of the thick, dark smoke. Some family members were burned and bruised. The family says they were in the water for six hours before being rescued. Thankfully we were one of the ones who made it out. We did see some lifeless bodies on the shore once the firemen came. It was just a scary sight to see. I froze when i saw the lifeless body. The family says theyre lucky to be alive and theyll never forget the devastation in lahaina. Were trying to make it easy for you to help. We have a list of verified organizations that are collecting donations on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Just click on the how to help maui link. Its right up there in our trending bar. New in the 6 00 hour, three groups of pediatricians and emergency medicine providers are sounding the alarm over Mental Health crises for kids. The American Academy of pediatrics says that every year about a half million children with mental or Behavioral Health conditions are scene in emergency rooms. That group, along with the American College of Emergency Physicians and Emergency Nurses Association recommend developing teams that can respond to pediatric Mental Health crises in schools, in their doctors offices and at home. They also want to add pediatric Mental Health professionals to emergency departments. Finally, they recommend supporting staff with information for specific groups at high risk for Mental Health concerns. Later this morning, east bay municipal utility district will be at the san leandro reservoir retrieving cars that have been illegally dumped. They posted these photos to facebook last week saying they pulled tons of trash from the watershed, including eight cars. Theyll retrieve three more today. The utility district says it threatens Water Quality and the environment. Now to a live look at san jose where volunteers are going to be holding a different kind of cleanup. Theyre going to focus on Guadalupe River park. Crews will be focussing on the Guadalupe River near downtown san jose, which has been the site of a lot of homeless encampments. The groups downtown streets Team San Jose and Guadalupe River Park Conservancy are beautifying the park and river trails. It begins at 9 00 in the morning. Good thing its early because its been heating up in the afternoon. Early in the morning it feels so humid, okay, its already warm. So were going to see that again today as we start out with a live look outside in san jose. It is clear this morning, different picture compared to what we had yesterday morning where we were watching some lightning flashes in the distance. We do still have that chance of seeing isolated showers and thunderstorms today. Its also the first day of school for kids heading out for campbell unified and Campbell Union high school district. Its going to be in the upper 60s at dropoff time and we are all clear throughout the day. At pickup time, its at a hot 90 degrees with sunshine. As we take a look at our high temperatures around the bay area, were anywhere from upper 90s to mid60s, as we see that spread in temperatures across our microclimates, but we will have muggy conditions and more sunshine for the afternoon. Well talk about more changes ahead in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. Mike, hopefully you can find some lower gas prices somewhere. Were doing the best we can. You might not love my prices, but i dont like the muggy on your forecast. In san ramon, 4. 89, well call out the exxon. San mateo schools start today, maybe some new drivers will fill up for 4. 79 a gallon at the 76 on south el camino real. Calling out the new price leader in mountain view, 4. 49 at the newly renamed great gas on grant road in mountain view. Thank you for reporting through gasbuddy. Com. Lets get out to the roadways and talk about whats going on as far as the morning patterns. The south bay did clear up from the first early slowdown. I was concerned about that. I see more slowdown, a crash south 880 approaching highway 92. Its closer to the interchange than marked on the map but it looks like things are moving a little better. The earlier crash on 37 did clear around 121. We have a gradual slowdown and were at almost a half hour out of vallejo and into novato. Expanding driverless vehicles in the bay area, coming up next the latest see to get an autonomous shuttle and how you can get onboard yourself. A Silicon Valley company has billions of dollars of trouble with china. Well get to that. Lets get to the futures and see whats going to happen. It looks like another down day. Were going to see temperatures at 65 degrees, a little warmer than where we usually start, at dropoff time its nice and sunny, and you can wear short sleeves and shorts all day long. At pickup time, its at 92 degrees. Well take a look at some slightly cooler temperatures in our forecast coming up. And were looking toward the commute at walnut creek, the taillights away from us are moving toward the 680 24 interchange. Smooth flow of traffic. I thought it was slowing down a bit, but its eased up. We may see influence from the north bay crash. Ill explain that coming up. Happy wednesday to you. Stocks took a hit yesterday on more concerns over the chinese economy. I think you may see gas prices come down, as speculators speculate demand is going to fall in china. Target made more money, but warns shoppers shopping may slow down or warns investors that shopping may slow down in the fall, in part because of the return of student loan payments. Santa claras intel says it is going to give up a plan to spend 5. 5 billion on an israeli chipmaker called tower semiconductor. Intel got approval from u. S. Regulators to buy it, got approval from foreign regulators, all the regulators it needs, except china. Both intel and tower have business in china, so they need the Chinese Government to say okay. But the Chinese Government said nothing, not yes, not no, just nothing. Many wonder if its payback for all the Technology Restrictions washington is putting on chinese companies. But with no approval, intel will have to give up on the plan. U. S. Congressman don bacon from nebraska says the fbi warned him chinese hackers read his emails earlier this year. We do know hackers got into lots of sensitive u. S. Government accounts, taking advantage of a security error by microsoft. Bacon warned, quote, the chinese are not our friend, and said, ill work overtime to ensure taiwan gets every dollar of the 19 billion in weapons backlog theyve ordered and more. Theres a graphic x, so he tweeted it or whatever it is we call it. x yesterday caught slowing down connections between it and several websites like the New York Times and Mark Zuckerbergs facebook. If you click on a link on x to the New York Times, you got a fivesecond delay. Elon musks distaste for the times and certainly Mark Zuckerberg is well documented by himself. He documents it, says it out loud. The Washington Post was the first to notice the slowdown, which has since stopped. x has had no response, but they never had response to inquiries. Im not going to give them the dignity of saying they didnt respond. My post took a minute to go live. Ill research that. That is interesting. I dont think its you particularly. Hes never tweeted about you, im sorry to say, or happy to say, maybe. Happy to say. Thanks, scott. It is 6 17 right now. Public transit in the bay area going driverless. Today the Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency rolling out its new autonomous shuttle. Its called loop. It will pick up passengers seven days a week from 9 00 a. M. To 6 00 p. M. And take them along a fixed route along Treasure Island. It will have pickups every 25 minutes. The shuttles will be free to ride. The city of san ramon has a similar service. We now know who will be playing in the womens world cup championship match. England beat the host country, australia. The two teams evenly matched and it was in the 86th minute that the match was determined. Englands russo was able to get the ball past australias goalie. England won 31. Its going to be england versus spain in the final on sunday morning at 3 00 a. M. Yelling going on early in the newsroom this morning, very early. Trending this morning, First Responders in San Francisco going the extra mile to help a college student. The grant parents of the San Francisco state student helping a young woman move in on friday to campus, but their car rolled over in an accident. The good news, theyre both expected to be okay. But sf fire posted on social media that they were concerned she wouldnt get her personal belongings. Thats when firefighters stepped in and helped move the young woman in themselves. Isnt that nice . Wow. I always think on some of those hills where you park this way or up the hill, it just looks like theyre all going to roll down the hill. When i went to school at cal a long time ago, when they moved in, she had trouble walking up the hill and she wasnt sure my dads car would make it. They had to park at the bottom and trudge. I remember driving a stick shift in San Francisco. That is terrifying. I did it, too. Just go around me, please. Roll back, roll up. A lot of fun. Lets check the forecast right now. I have a view of San Francisco. A cool view of the sun rising this morning. A little bit of fog rolling across. Its mostly clear. Were going to have a really nice day. And due to the lack of fog that weve seen or the fact that it clears out so quickly, our valleys are going to be heating up again. Were reaching into the 90s and a few spots reaching 100 degrees. We also have an elevated fire danger that continues as we get hot, dry and breezy conditions. And then, also, the chance of thunderstorms will linger not only today, but the next few days. Were watching that. Lets get you a look at the first day of School Forecast for sunnyvale unified. Hopefully its a great start. We have some nice weather. At least the dropoff time is in the mid60s, but it will be heating up as we reach into the upper 80s at pickup time with a lot of sunshine. It still feels really muggy as we get this area of
