A major blow to San Francisco and specifically to union square. The iconic macys store in union square will soon be closing down. Thats 400,000 square feet. Macys made this announcement this morning, the company is closing not just the San Francisco union square but 156 across the country. The mayor called it a business decision. Macys owned this building in union square since 1947. The announcement is a blow to the efforts to revitalize the area and a piece of San Francisco history will be going away. The mayor downplayed the role of retail theft in the city and how it may have played into this decision. We have seen a significant decline in crime. We know this has nothing to do with that decision. Its really a larger business decision that macys made. Experts say retail crime had a lot to do with the decision to leave union square. Macys will stay open through at least this year as the Company Looks for someone to buy its building at this location. Macys issued the statement saying closing the store is never an easy decision. We are committed to supporting our impacted colleagues with opportunities wherever available across macys inc. And to communicating with transparency.
