Bay area voters casting ballots early. The news at 5 starts now. Thank you for joining us. Tame terry mcsweeney. The rain showers continue tonight after strong winds and rain made for a 12 weather punch this weekend. A live look outside from some of our wet camera lenses. Some wetter than others. Top left the storm ranger on San Bruno Mountain scanning the bay area. Thats really rained in as the rain still falling right now in some areas. Up in the sierra, the brunt of the blizzard has passed. This is new video into our newsroom tonight from near truckee. You see the storm left homes and cars buried in snow and more is still on the way. I80 closed as crews clear roadways and toe cars stranded in the snow. Highway 50 was closed temporarily this morning as caltrans towed an suv. No injuries there. Caltrans continued work like this throughout the day getting those roadways reopened. We will talk to a spokesperson about the status of their work. Thats coming up momentarily. First, we want to check on things here in the bay area. Rob, you have a wet road behind you. Yes. This is 880 in oakland. You see the rain is enough that it is causing ponding on the roads and that where some of the heaviest rain is now. South of san jose, snow showers around Mount Hamilton at this hour. The significant rain on the oakland camera, into hayward, 5le 0, dublin grade, to ten minutes. We having havent seen any lightning strikes but that remains an Islamic State possibility heading into this evening as the cold air prompting all the snow issues continues pouring from north to south. Showers will begin to decrease tonight and for the north bay as we get the clearing skies, frost advisory from 1 00 a. M. To the a. M. Tomorrow. The sierra that blizzard warning extended to midnight. We could sew one to two feet of snow. Good news, helped roadways trying to reopen tomorrow, snow rates coming down and the strong winds, the other component to the blizzard warning, starting to relax some as we head into monday. Coming up we will talk about how much longer we could see the showers around the bay area and the next storm system on the way for the middle part of the week coming up in about ten minutes. And we are following breaking news on the peninsula right now. Highway 92 is closed in both directions because of a crash. So far no injuries reported. This is the area between skyline boulevard and main street. Closed as crews investigate and work to clear the crash scene. Here is a live look at our traffic maps. As you can see, no word on what led to that crash, when the road will open. We will bring you updates on air and online as they come in. I80 is closed from colfax to the nevada state line. Here is a live look from a caltrans camera. You can see plenty of snow still there. More expected to fall in the days ahead. Caltrans says crews were out this morning evaluating conditions and working on recovering all the vehicles that spun out in the snow. Joining me an update caltrans district 3 spokesperson steve nelson. Thank you for being here. Could you tell me where we are right now . How does the situation look this minute . Well, thanks, we had a break in the weather this morning where we hoped to be able to reopen and then the weather switched on us and got just as bad as we have seen yesterday and the day before. So unfortunately we havent been able to reopen. Crews are still working 12hour shifts day and night. But we havent been able to clear enough lanes to be safe for travel. We really just need break in the weather. Hopefully, we will get that later tonight and crews will be working overnight to get those lanes open. But as soon as they clear a lane, the high winds that rob mentioned and the snow keeps falling as, hasnt really stopped. Its been very difficult for our crews to try to get back open. But again we are hoping for a break tonight and maybe, hopefully, tomorrow, sometime tomorrow morning we will have i80 open. Both directions, all lanes, or a couple of lanes at a time . How is it going to look, do you think . It will be probably just we are trying to get at least two lanes open. We will have our crews out there, our snow blowers are working the shoulders. So we will have to close a lane for that. It wont be a full opening tomorrow, im sure. But, hopefully, at least two lanes both directions. We have been able to keep 50 open, as you mentioned, for the most part. But we have had intermittent closures for avalanche control or spinouts. But right now 50 is still open. We are just trying to work on 80 as best we can, dealing with these conditions. We saw it coming. We kind of expected it, but its been a challenge. One last question real quick. I know that skiers are hearing about this blizzard. They look at differently than perhaps you and other people in caltrans do. They cant wait to get up there to get in on the snow. What advice would you give to people, lets say you get 80 open tomorrow, any word of advice, any cautions about coming up that way . Well, even if it is open, like i said, its going to be slow going. We got a lot of work to do, even i dont know how much we can get done overnight. But its still going to be slow going up there. I am from the bay area. Its probably going to add an hour or so to your travel time. We are just trying to get as best we can done when we get that break in the weather. We just havent had it yet. So its been, yeah, its been tough going. Im sure, you know, people are seeing the snowfall totals and anxious to get up there. But tomorrow at least its going to be slow. All right. Steve nelson, caltrans, sure appreciate you taking time this sunday to talk us to. Absolutely. Thank you. All right. And reminder. When we are not on air, you can track the snow and rain on the go. Download our nbc bay area app and use your camera to scan the qr code on your screen right now. It will take you straight to our radar. The Supreme Court expected to issue a ruling tomorrow on whether colorado can ban former President Trump from the primary ballot. Last month the High Court Heard oral arguments about whether mr. Trump can be barred from the ballot because of his role in the attack on the u. S. Capitol. The case centers around the 14th amendment which says people are not eligible to serve in government if they engage in insurrection. It will not only affect colorados primary, but maine and illinois, all have tried to deem him ineligible to run. Today was the last weekend day to vote early in california. We have a government of by and for the people, and we have to really get involved, understand whats on our ballot. Reporter people dropping off ballots agreed. I think my vote needs to count. Everybodys should count. Reporter voters have a number of propositions and races to consider in addition to the president ial primary. I think what will drive people to the polls are two statewide races. One is the senate race. Reporter we have already been processing ballots now for a few weeks, and right now we are just getting ready for election day. Reporter john is director of elections in San Francisco. He says so far they have received about 75,000 ballots and its still a big operation on election day. We still get a decent turnout at the polls. Not as high as it was prior to people emailing ballots. But the changes that people go to places that drop off their ballots. Thats actually the greatest source of vote by mail ballots on election day are the polling places. So well get beyond 50,000 for this election, i have no doubt. Of course, the weather to the sierra. A mix of everything again today. We had some sunshine at times, showers and still some roaming downpours around the bay area. Seeing some off to the south and east of san jose right now. 54 degrees in san jose. There is a look at more rainfall. Walnut creek, steady rain on the way to the trivalley to the south. We will look at that on the radar in a moment. And back to San Francisco, mix of everything. Raindrops on the lens, sun in the distance and still some showers there moving down the peninsula. So for tomorrow morning north bay temperatures especially could be cold enough for some patchy frost. If you get enough clearing and the winds are relatively light, watch out for that frost advisory north bay Interior Valley 9 00 a. M. Towards the afternoon should be a little bit warmer than the weekend highs, which have been mostly in the lowtomid 50s. Tomorrow close to 60 in san jose and upper 50s from San Francisco into oakland. Now a view on the radar. Still picking up some snow showers south of Mount Hamilton. You see around campbell and lows gatos storms approaching the monterey bay region. No Marine Special statements or weather warnings for potential waterspouts. They have not jaen rated the big thunderstorms we had this time yesterday. We still got the downpours. Right around Castro Valley approaching the dublin grade south of san ramon right along 580 steady rain at times, likely ponding on the road there for 880 and 580 and the north bay partly cloudy skies and this is the way things will be setting up overnight tonight as the showers continue, cold air dropping in from the north, but from here snow levels will likely start to come up a little bit. The temperatures the next couple of days will rebound. Heading that monday, the forecast still a chance of an isolated shower, not as much as we saw this weekend, and the trend by the afternoon has a bit more of a north bay focus. That transitions us to the next best chance for rain the middle part of the week. Between now and 7 00 tomorrow just 0. 10 inch of rain around the area. Not much to show until tuesday night and wednesday. Storm dropping down the coast will bring the chances of seeing those showers. You saw it there wednesday. Here is some good news. Thursday and friday warm and dry, but what would a weekend be without another storm system . One more for saturday and then clearing conditions as we get into the sunday forecast. Lets take a closer look now at that sevenday forecast. You can see numbers rebounding closer to the averages. We should see highs in the mid60s this time of year. We are eventually going get there. Friday actually looks a bit springlike as we head towards the start of the weekend. So ongoing shower chances tomorrow, mainly for the north bay, wednesday a few more showers and right now saturday might be the rainiest day in the series. It just seems to be that way on the weekends. Cant get through a weekend without a storm. But sunday right now looking sunny with clearing skies. All right. We will take a split on that.
