Gaza continue at College Campuses tonight, the first, a police chase in the south bay, ends with a crash that sent four people to the hospital with. Investigators are telling us about the dangerous chase. The news at five starts right now. Thanks for joining us. Im gia vang and im terry mcsweeney. We begin tonight with developing news out of the south bay. The Sheriffs Office is investigating a crash. A crash involving a deputy. It all started this afternoon. Just after 1230. The Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office says deputies tried to stop a gold lexus for speeding in san jose. That was near berryessa road and north capitol avenue. The driver did not stop, led deputies on a chase throughout East San Jose and during that chase, one of the deputies crashed into another car, a toyota suv. Now that crash happened near king road and commodore drive, four people were inside that car, all taken to the hospital. All expected to be okay. The deputy involved also had some minor injuries. The Sheriffs Office says the 24 year old driver deputies were chasing intentionally hit a patrol vehicle. Deputies used spike strips to stop his car. He did try to run away, but deputies caught up with him and arrested him. An east Bay Community is coming together to remember a family killed in a tragic crash. A memorial organized by friends and Community Members is wrapping up at valle vista park in pleasanton. The family was killed in a crash wednesday night. Those at the memorial identified the victims as tarun and rincey george and their two children. Rohan, who was in eighth grade at hart middle school, and aaron, a second grader at donlon elementary. Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash. Family was driving in an electric car on foothill road near stone ridge drive. Investigators say the car hit the curb, crashed into a tree and burst into flames. Some Community Members are calling for more to be done on that stretch of road, where speeding is an issue and we continue to follow the wave of disruptive protests at universities across the country. At ucla today, Police Arrived on campus after dueling protests clash several fights and confrontations broke out despite a barrier that was meant to separate the propalestinian students from a group of rallying. From a group rallying to show support for jewish students. Now, jewish students say the campus atmosphere is so hostile they are afraid. Meanwhile, propalestinian protesters say this is about protecting innocent civilians in gaza. I think whats happening right now is making everyone feel extremely unsafe. I know since october 7th, but especially since what happened with columbia myself as well as everyone i know, has been crying every single day. We really do fear for our lives and the future. Im here to be in solidarity with these brave students. Im here because i have a heart and ive seen enough children get slaughtered in gaza. Enough is enough. Enough is enough. The violence has to stop. Were here for a ceasefire. Thousands of people packed into the space as the day wore on, at times shouting at each other from a foot or two away in the bay area, protesters against the war in gaza are spending a fourth night camping at stanford. The students have set up an encampment made up of 18 tents at white plaza. The group is calling on the university to separate itself from any companies or organizations advancing military efforts in the israelhamas war. Protesters tell us that stanford has handed out letters saying that if they continue to camp out, they may be suspended, but they say its a risk they are willing to take. Goal is sharing political education. The goal is trying to reach as many people as possible and also just showing solidarity with the people in gaza. So i think the goal is just try and stay here as long as possible, and, you know, at least until stanford tries to meet some of our demands. So the demonstrations started during at midweek at stanford, when High School Students and their families visit that campus. Now, cal poly, humboldt is now enforcing a hard closure on campus following the week long pro palestinian protest. Yesterday, the university released an email to students announcing that closure, saying anyone on campus without permission could be cited or even arrested. As part of the enforcement, police helped place concrete barriers in certain areas to prevent cars from driving on campus. Students will only be allowed to enter dining facilities and their dorms. No other parts of campus are open to students at this time. Well as calls for a cease fire continue across the country, President Biden spoke with israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu on the phone today. The white house says the president continues to reaffirm his ironclad commitment to israels security, but also reiterated the United States opposition to an invasion of gazas southernmost city of rafah. The two leaders last spoke two weeks ago after iran launched missile and drone strikes against israel. During todays discussion, mr. Biden and the Prime Minister also reviewed ongoing talks to secure the release of hostages and a cease fire in gaza. Now, another topic of discussion getting more humanitarian aid into gaza. That comes as world central kitchen says it will resume humanitarian operations in gaza starting tomorrow. This follows the death of seven aid workers killed by israeli airstrikes earlier this month. World central kitchen says it has more than 200 trucks carrying enough supplies for about 8 million meals, and theyre ready to enter gaza through the rafah crossing. And from jordan. The Aid Organization founded by chef jose andres, suspended all deliveries after the april 1st attack on an aid convoy. And we will continue to follow the developments of the ongoing conflict, as well as the latest from College Campuses as demonstrations continue. Were not on air. You can get the latest by downloading our free nbc bay area news app or visit our website nbcbayarea. Com. Com. A celebration of pandemic policy two, popular to scrap today marks four years since jfk drive turned into a car free promenade. The one and a half mile stretch of road was reserved for pedestrians and bikes during the pandemic. The goal was to give people a safe place to gather outdoors. Well, in 2022, the city decided not to reopen the road to cars, and voters later made the change permanent. We knew that prior to the pandemic, three out of every four vehicles that used to travel down this road didnt start their trip in a park, and they didnt end it in a park, which meant that they were using this beautiful space, this incredibly valuable space, to get someplace else more quickly. That is not the purpose of a park. Hundreds of people were there for todays celebration, including mayor london breed, remembering and honoring those who lost their lives or were hurt on the job. California marks workers memorial day today , and with it, Governor Newsom reaffirms the states commitment to make working conditions safer and healthier. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith takes us to one of several events we owe it to them to ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain. In richmond today, workers memorial day was commemorated throughout the state. Were having events to remember, workers weve lost out throughout, throughout the country. But specifically, were here for workers in california. Cal osha, along with federal osha and other partners, put this event together to honor workers whove lost their lives due to work related injuries and illnesses. In 2022, there were apparently 504 fatalities that we know of that were as the result of going to work, and that is way too many, our goal is to get those numbers down, educate employers on how to make their workplaces safer. We want to ensure that the workers are working in locations that are safe, that the employers provide them with safe working conditions and practice safety day and out. The event was held at the rosie the riveter world war ii Home Front National historical park, a location with special significance. The rosie the riveter historical park is really, in remembrance of the workers. The women workers in World War Two who stepped up when a lot of the men were at war and assisting with the war effort. And so, a lot of what they did was dangerous. This event comes as Governor Newsom issued a proclamation declaring today, workers memorial day, highlighting advancement in recent years like improving working conditions and wages for fast food workers, protecting warehouse workers from unsafe production quotas, and ending unfair Pay Practices impacting Garment Industry workers. Today, that commitment was reaffirmed so that everyone can come home safe. Kristie smith, nbc bay area news. It is the official start of the San Francisco boating season. That is right, and it was a great day to be out on the water. Well take you to sausalito for the annual blessing of the fleet and boat parade next. And it was a breezy day around the bay area. Right now, 70 degrees sunshine in san jose. When that 70 will be closer to 80 degrees in the 7day forecast. When we come right back ahead for us, the nfls controversial new safety helmet will players actually wear them . And the town invaded by bears . How folks there are trying to my late fatherinlaw lit up a room, but his vision dimmed with age. He had amd. I didnt know it then, but it can progress to ga, an advanced form of the disease. His struggle with vision loss from amd made me want to help you see warning signs of ga, like hazy or blurred vision, so its hard to see fine details, colors that appear dull or washed out, or trouble with low light that makes driving at night a real challenge. If you think you have ga, dont wait. Treatments are available. Ask a retina specialist about fdaapproved treatments for ga and go to gawontwait. Com day on the bay parade. That parade showcased more than 100 historic boats. This years theme was rocking on the bay. The parade started off the coast of tiburon, went down and along the San Francisco shoreline. Very nice. Yes. All right. Also very nice. Right now were going outside. Live. Look over the golden gate bridge. You can see it. You can see it on this sunday evening and looks like, clear skies, but maybe a little bit of haze. Im not sure. Rob yeah, a little here, a little breezy out there. Start a boating season. You saw some whitecaps across the water. We had small craft advisories typical for this time of year when you get the sunshine and you got that late day sea breeze that picks up, we do have kind of that spread of summer like microclimates around the bay area right now. As we take you outside, youll be able to see that weve got those temperatures in the 60s and 70s for now, but eventually well be on our way to some 80s inland as we head towards the middle part of the week. There you got the blue skies around san jose. It is breezy outside, northwest wind at 20mph, gusts up to about 24, and there, if you look closely, we talked about the white caps across the bay winds sustained out of the northwest to 29mph. A cool 60 near San Francisco, more 60s around san rafael. Southwest wind up to 21mph. And around walnut creek, one of the warmer spots weve seen today did get up to 75 degrees earlier. Right now, 73. So the trend moving forward will be the warmest temperatures of the week tuesday, wednesday and thursday with the chance especially for the middle part of the week of seeing some low 80s inland and then changes as we head towards next weekend. More on that coming up in one minute. So notice the wind map right now. Lots of 20 mile per hour breezes from hayward to san jose out towards fairfield. Over the next 24 hours, were likely to see a similar cycle wind speeds backing off a bit as we head towards the morning and then during the afternoon. Tomorrow about the same range of 25 to 35 mile per hour wind speeds around the coast in San Francisco, and some of those onshore winds likely to bring in some patchy low clouds heading towards tomorrow morning. But during the day, mostly sunny skies. A repeat performance of your sunday forecast carried over into your monday forecast. So morning temperatures start off in the low 50s. You can dress in layers if youre inland with those Cool Temperatures to start the day, and then eventually low 70s by lunchtime around those east bay valleys, 73 in san jose. But for now, not much change for San Francisco and oakland. Youre still looking at highs in the mid 60s and with winds out of the west from 15 to 25mph, youre just not going to warm up as long as those onshore winds are that strong. Now. Tuesday, inland temperatures climb up a few degrees. We start to see more mid 70s. Now you begin to see the temperatures change here. Now look what happens. Wednesday 80 in concord, close to 80 in san jose, santa rosa up to 80 degrees. And by thursday now 80 degrees, maybe mid 80s for solano county, 81 in san jose, 70 from San Francisco to oakland. And if you think this weather is going to last all the way through next weekend, hang on just a minute. Lets show you whats happening next weekend. We do have some showers across parts of northern california, a sign that were going to see High Pressure give up some ground next weekend, and we will begin to see cooler changes as we head into friday and saturday. Right now, you can see that weather system bringing some rain showers off to the north right now. Looks like the north bay later saturday. Might see a few showers. Will certainly trend cooler as we head towards next weekend after San Francisco gets a chance of upper 60s and low 70s for the middle part of the week. Inland temperatures tuesday through thursday could see a few low 80s inland. Thursday looks to be the warmest day. Stay tuned. Next saturday, north of San Francisco may see a few showers. It would be a weekend with it would be a weekend. But we got lucky. This. Yes we did this weekend has been gorgeous. Well talk about next weekend. Next weekend. All right rob thanks.
