Open again following a weekend long, hard closure. We have an update on the southbound interstate 680 and what you can expect during that morning commute and dodd when it comes to making it in the bay. Is it better to buy or rent . We are live with new data that may have some homeowners second guessing those mortgage payments. This is today in the bay area. Good monday morning. Im Ginger Conejero saab laura garcia is off today, and im marcus washington. Well get a look at that commute coming up in just a bit with mike. But first, of course we got to start out with that forecast because it was a beautiful weekend. It was, and im hoping weve got a beautiful monday. Its going to be a great day today too. Just a little bit warmer. But its not going to be a big change from what we had over the past couple of days. So were starting out right now at 50 degrees as we get a look at the north bay. San franciscos 52, and its 53 in oakland. As we take a look at the trend for today and our high temperatures that are headed for the low 70s for the afternoon, well see a high of 73 and fremont and hayward, a 71 actually in those areas, and 71 in novato, San Francisco, up to 66 degrees. So very much like yesterday, tomorrow is a repeat with not much of a change in temperatures. Well talk about when we do see some changes coming up. Mike you have some welcome news to start out our monday. Yeah. First of all, lets show some folks might have missed this weekend. It was fully closed. This right side here southbound 680 where they scraped off the old roadway surface. Put on new on new pavement, some caging there to put some stability in the roadway and then finally some concrete. So it should be a much smoother drive for folks who are taking that this morning. And as the map shows, you can take that this morning, just a couple minutes before 4 00 in the morning. They did reopen this roadway. So as we look at the map, you see the Speed Sensors are lit back up once again. South 680 reopens again. No problem. Highway 84 does see a little bit of slowing. Saw a lot of slowing there as well as 880 over the weekend. Again, everybody can get back to their normal routes. Same thing for highway 37. Why is this the case . Westbound was closed over the weekend. I dont know why it shows up closed in the eastbound direction. That is not closed. Highway 37 also reopened fully this morning, so ill get those sensors changed. But westbound, the closure over the weekend has cleared from that section as well. So a good start this monday morning. Back to you. Thanks a lot mike. Developing right now in the middle east, Israeli Forces have reportedly launched a new deadly overnight strike in gaza today in the bays brea jackson. Live in washington this morning and brea. This all comes despite the new high stakes talks between President Biden and israeli Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. Thats right. Good morning, marcus ginger. So that phone call taking place over the weekend, President Biden discouraged israels assault on rafah, a plea seemingly to have fallen on deaf ears. Reuters reports. New israeli airstrikes killed at least 20 palestinians there overnight. More than 1 Million People are reportedly seeking refuge in rafah following months of attacks. Now the attack comes just hours ahead of a hamas leaders meeting in cairo, egypt, to discuss a potential cease fire. Its unknown if todays air strike by israel will have an impact on those negotiations. But back to sundays conversation between President Biden and netanyahu. It comes less than a month after the two leaders held a phone call after an israeli airstrike killed seven humanitarian workers. And brie. When it comes to those humanitarian aid workers, the organization they were affiliated with is making an announcement this morning. So, mark, its world central kitchen is set to resume its humanitarian operations in gaza following that deadly israeli airstrike that killed those workers. Officials with the organization say they have more than 200 trucks carrying enough supplies for almost 8 million meals ready to enter gaza through the rafah crossing and from jordan, world10 show kitchen says its also looking to add new sea routes to bring supplies into the region. Following the airstrike nearly a month ago, Israeli Forces took full responsibility for killing the aid workers, saying it was the result of soldiers mistaking them for hamas gunmen. The aid organization, founded by chef jose andres, says ended all deliveries of food and other critical supplies immediately after that attack. Marcus ginger, thanks a lot for that update. Brie jackson from washington. Well, its 504 for you right now and new this morning. It is not often you get to listen to a conversation involving two former president s and a sitting president. Well, its happening on the smartless podcast latest episode. This is featuring President Joe Biden and former president bill clinton as well as barack obama. Now, in one clip, mr. Biden talks about gun reform when asked about the issues voters should be focusing on. Were going to make sure that we do something about gun violence in this country. Yes, the idea that we allow assault weapons to be sold with magazines with 100 rounds, its just bizarre. The democrats never said we want to take your guns away. Absolutely not. You never said that. You said, by the way, we got to be smart about whats dont need to kill a deer with an ar 15. The now former president donald trump, has said that if elected, he would undo restrictions implemented by President Biden. The podcast was recorded when biden was in new york city. This is for the three president s fundraiser at radio city music hall that interview dropped today on all podcast platforms. New signs this morning. Making it in the bay is not getting any easier for first time home buyers. Today in the bays bob redell is live in dublin and bob, the latest data indicates that a surge in home prices has happened compared to this time last year. Correct. Good morning to you, ginger. The California Association of realtors just released new numbers. Well put them up on your screen that show that in march, the median price of a home here in the bay area was almost 1. 4 million. Thats a 15. 5 jump than what the median price was the year before. In march of 2023. Its also a sign that prices have recovered from the dip they took in the fall of 2022, following the federal reserves Interest Rate hike. Experts say buyers have grown tired of waiting for those Interest Rates to come down. They have come off the sidelines but are having to obviously pay more than they want when theyre buying a home, and theres not much inventory out there, just a two month supply. The median time for houses to sell here in the bay area is just under two weeks. Now, as home prices go up, renting becomes more attractive. A new study from bank rate backs this up. The financial website has found that renting is now cheaper than buying a home. A home in all, 50 of the largest us metro areas, the average mortgage payment was just over 2700 a month, while the average rent was around 1,980 a month. Thats a gap of close to 37 in the bay area. The gap is much greater between owning and renting a ranges from around 160 to 190. Bank rate also found that in 21 metro areas, the average monthly cost of owning a home is at least 50 more expensive than renting. Reporting live here in dublin, bob redell today in the bay. Thanks a lot bob. Very interesting stuff there. Excuse me, it is 507 for you this morning. A south bay deputy is recovering. This is after a crash in a high speed chase which also injured four innocent people. This happened yesterday on commodore drive and king road in san jose. Thats where a patrol car struck an suv. Now all four passengers and the deputy suffered nonlife threatening injuries. The whole incident started when deputies say that they actually tried to pull over that speeding car, and the suspect took off. At one point, he also rammed a patrol car, then later slowed his car with speed strip speed strips and soon after arrested him. Now the face he faces, that person in that car faces multiple charges, including driving a stolen vehicle. And happening today, south bay leaders will join the Salvation Army to unveil a new housing project. The nonprofit will renovate the emmanuel house overnight shelter on Fourth Street and build another housing complex on the same site. Earlier this month, Santa Clara County supervisors approved 4 million for the project. The Salvation Army says people now living at emmanuel house will be relocated to temporary units during construction. Its 509 now. Were taking a live look at San Francisco. It was a beautiful weekend in the city. Carry a little bit windy, honestly, a little chilly at times, but as youre saying, hopefully it will continue. Yeah, we are going to still have the mild temperatures, but at times the winds will pick up, especially in San Francisco and around the coastline. Were going to see our start to the morning in the upper 40s. Were seeing that a very cool one in palo alto. Its 48 degrees 54 in san jose and 49 in livermore. Lets head to brentwood with a look at what to expect throughout the day. With some upper 50s this morning, well see that at 8 00, at noon at 69 degrees and a nice warm up once again with highs in the mid 70s. And were looking at a high of 73 in san jose, 66 in san mateo and novato will see high there of 71 degrees. Well talk about the rest of the week coming up. Mike has been trying to find some lower gas prices. Yeah. And theres just that one in fremont. The fliers on osgood, the lowest price in union city and around the rest of Alameda County, about 4. 79 for 79 at abe on mission boulevard. Thats the one we can verify through gasbuddy. Com sunnyvale is lowest is National Petroleum for 89 at their shop on old San Francisco road, and nothing under five bucks for san mateo city or county. 504 is the lowest i find at gas and shop on east fourth avenue. Thats their best, folks. Thank you for sharing the around the bay. Were looking at smooth Speed Sensors. The only red you see is over out of the Altamont Pass. That would be 580. Once you get past grant line road, everythings at speed 680. The middle number reopened and at speed as you head down from the dublin interchange and highway 37 reopened as well over, over after over the weekend closure there and the bay bridge not yet showing that morning commute back to you. Well, coming up on today in the bay, sometimes made in america. Isnt ginger good stuff to watch out for scott plus. Heres a picture he posted of a visit with the countrys premier. Musk says china has cleared the way for teslas socalled full selfdriving on its roads. Now remember, its not. On friday, the department of Homeland Security announced a new ai safety board. Musk is not on it. Neither is mark zuckerberg. The heads of microsoft, nvidia and openai did make the cut. Speaking of openai, we know the maker of chatgpt is working on a. Version five of. Best guess is chatgpt for was programed with more than a trillion data points. Vacuuming up wikipedia articles, New York Times articles, anything programmers could get their hands on. Estimates say theyll need ten times as much for gpt five, which makes some in the business concerned theyre running out of data. One solution feed ai data from one to the other ai. We spoke to an ai expert about that on our Program Press here over the weekend. It sounds gross, pablo, but you know what . That reminds me of is mad cow disease, when you feed a cow a cow, you end up with bovine encephalitis, this is a an ai producing data that other ai would use as its data, just sounds like the beginning of a scary movie. Yeah. And, you know, it can go really, really poorly. Like, the, ai feeding on itself. It can get lost somewhere and lose, lose track of reality and start spouting garbage, so you need to control that process very carefully to make sure that it is actually improving the model and not just leading to nowhere. The Washington Post this morning reports meta is considering layoffs at facebook at its Oversight Board, the group that polices content. Facebook created the Oversight Board in 2019 as an independent body that could overrule the companys decisions on blocking and banning and. The federal open Market Committee meets this week to discuss Interest Rates. I mentioned this last only because everybody is sure theyre not going to change anything. Theyre certainly not going to lower Interest Rates to remind you, they raise Interest Rates to fight inflation. Then they dont lower them until they see inflation go down, which has to be the economy sinking. Were going to get a jobs number this friday. We expect to be very, very good. And this goes back to the good news is bad news thing. Yeah we talk about that all the time. Just like you want them to go lower. But then that means something bad has to happen. So its like oh and nothing bad is happening. And just like in in bobs report, he was saying, you know what people who were waiting for those Interest Rates to go down, theyre just tired of it. We want kids to see themselves and to be able to identify with their heroes. Well. The dolls outfit faithfully recreates the one yamaguchi wore when she won gold at the 1992 winter olympics. She says that was the only time shes ever worn it in competition. I wonder, is it in a museum somewhere . Mike . I know you know her well, she said. With her competition, right . Yeah.
