Craw, really for september we had so many lightening strikes with all the video and picture that viewers were sending in. It was really widespread. From 4 00 this afternoon until the current time, thats where we start to see the energy with the lightening begin. And then it works its way to through the heart of the region with several lightening strikes. Live doppler 7, weve still got some lithening and zooming right into San Francisco. Got a downpour, just a lightening strike moments ago in the sunset district. Over the bay right now we have numerous lightening strikes in the sky still occurring even at this hour. And we still have a couple of lightening strikes to our south that could likely work their way inland in the next hour or so. Into the north bay we have a shower working its way in. And just to the west of lucas valley. It looks like the tail end of the moisture is really starting to move through the south bay at this hour. Nonetheless, well still keep the storm impact scale tonight. Some lightening and gusty winds associated with the system moving through. So well talk about what happens after this storm moves out of here, when well finally find refreshing air in that full acuweather forecast. Now, we have lightening video ahead. And we put it together for ow on abc 7. Com. A surprise windstorm took down trees and power lines tonight. Abc 7 News Reporter david louie has a look at the damage. Reporter the gusts of wind woke up residents starting shortly after 2 30 this morning. The howling sound nothing like what they expected. It sounded like a mini hurricane. Nic like florida, but it was really windy and nothing ive ever heard before. Reporter dispatchers received a flurry of calls as people called about downed power lines and broken tree limbs. He planted this tree, but the tree has lost limbs to wind three years in a row. A cable has kept it from falling over. Luckily no cars were going by at the time. Reporter a retired firefighter found himself pressed into service when gusts of wind broke large limbs taonto a neighbors house. There are some punctures up here. This is the size of my leg. Reporter among the hardest hit communities were campbells and son jose. One tree on University Avenue in san jose displaced an active colony of bees. Their hive located inside a large limb. And a tree that fell outside Bowers Elementary School in santa clara posed littled damage. The school didnt fall on school property, so were okay. Well, irma is no longer a powerful hurricane. But the storms death toll just increased. A fallen tree hit and killed a man today in south carolina. 42 people have now died including in the caribbean, cuba and florida. An estimated 7. 2 Million People are without power tonight. About a third of the people in florida itself. And while some survivors in florida now surveying the damage, evacus from the florida keys have to wait for bridge and infrastructure inspections before they can return. We all just want to go home and see whats going on. Reporter its unbelievable. We had a lot of damage and cleanup. Irma is now a Tropical Storm stretching about 600 miles from east to west. Still a large system. It is affecting at least nine states particularly georgia, alabama, and the carolinas. Tonight families are desperate to get back home to see if they have a home. But Authorities Say right now its just far too much damage. Its just not safe. She flew over the destruction before witnessing the damage on the ground firsthand. Reporter tonight a look at the destruction in the florida keys. Cars tossed from the roads, buried under sand. Homes knocked right off their foundation. We saw the damage from above. We are flying over u. S. 1 right now. That is the road that is shutdown to residents who are trying to get back. The only way you can access the keys now is by air or by sea. Bridges now damaged, we see streets completely flooded. You see boats thrown upside down, roads ripped off and entire trailers or mobile homes demolished. On the ground in key west, a dplichls of that powerful storm surge that followed Hurricane Irmas landfall. Some buildings completely destroyed. Tonight much of the keys are without power or water. And when we reach marathon key, we see irmas wrath. Entire neighborhoods completely flattened. Looking down, it does look like a debris field. Some of them are completely destroyed. This piece of paradise now on a long road to recovery. Downed power lines, debris spilling onto the streets, it is going to be months and months before the town of marathon gets up and running again. There is so much damage to assess and begin to cleanup. Urban search and rescue crews from the bay area are in florida to try and help out. Reporter this cellphone video was taken in the Early Morning hours when Hurricane Irma had just started approaching tampa. She regrets riding out the storm. It was so loud. The tree outside my house kept hitting my roof, so we were thinkingtist going to come crashing into our house. And remind you i had 13 family members here. A little baby all the way up to my grandma. She said being cut off and not getting information while the wind howled for hours was terrifying. Now its over, theres trees and power lines down in many neighbors. We did have a generator, but like i said, it ran out of gas and no gas stations around us are open. Reporter the 129th has been waiting to spring into action. They left friday from florida. A rescue swimmer was lowered down, made it to the cliffs mouth, made sure the couple was not seriously injured first. Strapped the wife in a harness and away she went to safety. The crew lifted her up out of the cave. She kept her head down. Once the firefighters were down, they were able to block the wind of the woman who was shivering. Goes back for the man and before he left the young man went back to thank his rescuers. Im great at this, dont worry about nothing. Put this on like this, strapped us in and took us right in.
