The breaking news is ice is doing that already. Up today, the matter of bonds, billions in bonds. A 4 billiondollar bond for Affordable Housing. Both will have to be voted in but he is skeptical. We had a hard enough time getting the water bond passed and we still havent built any dams. Now, anything that passes today still has to be signed by the governor. So heres an update on some of the billings we just talked about. The sanctuary bill has passed in the assembly. Though it has not come up in the senate. And the Affordable Housing bill has passed both houses and the governor is supposed to sign that. And finally the 4 billion dollar parks bill having some trouble. The last we heard there are not sufficient votes to pass that on to the governor. So a lot can happen between now and midnight when im sure this legislative session will still be going. Kpixs lynn ramirez takes us behind some of those numbers. People with good jobs suddenly looking for work. The ben gains restaurant was a fixture for decades but it just went out of business taking customers by surprise. Its disappointing. And putting dozens out of work. There will be about 35 people. Its one example of our topsy tour vie job market. We have been on a roller coaster here in california. Since march, one month we gain jobs. Today show the state lost 8000 jobs in august. Unemployment rose up from 4. 8 in july. Blake smith just joined the unemployment line. His construction job at the new apple campus ended but he cant find similar work. Told me one of the most expensive cities in the world. When im working im still staying in my car. Leisure cut the greatest number of jobs but at this point its not a lot. As suzie reports a legal loophole could force many tenants out of their homes. He has been living at 285 turk street in the tendser loin for a number of years. He thought he was living in a building with rent control because hes paid roughly 1100 a month the whole time. We were treated like. That is until 2015 when mouser took over and threatened to increase the rent. Which means he and his neighbors will no longer be able to afford this building. This is one of the last working class neighborhoods in San Francisco. San francisco supervisor says what mossers company is doing is technically doing. The owner of the building is also on the rent board and found a legal loophole that allows him to increase rent dramatically. Show renovations were made in the 80s making it exempt from rent control. Mosser did not respond to our requests. I think theres a sven ear of how this doesnt look good for someone on the rent board to be doing this. Recently evacuated units have been redone and are being advertised online anywhere from 1995 to 2995 a month. Already people are starting to move out. They are fighting for it. Kept the peace during last nights speech of a conservative commentator. These are some of the 9 arrested. The charges include battery on a police officer. Last nights efforts at crowd control did not come cheap. They did not, they were very expensive but as far as the grand scheme is concerned they were successful. Since 5 00 by the way, i have an update for you on the free speech week that is set to come in the next couple of weeks, that according to berkeley spokesperson says it looks like the berkeley patriot is now trying to scramble and take care of payments. So at this point its still up in the air but it looks like it may still happen which raises a lot of questions about security. Last night crowds had dispersed. Both police and the University Said it was a 600,000dollar success. While there are certainly resources we would have rather spent on the academic mission, we cant complain. Because we have free speech and thats what it took to honor both of those commitments last night. Last nights event only garnered 9 arrests. One for spitting on a police officer. To assault. Overall it was a much difference scene than this one event in february. So while last night was a success in the form of peaceful assembly, there is concern it wont last. Student group the berkeley patriot has teamed up to host free speech week but hasnt teamed up with the unit. They did 5 key things, they signed a contract, paid the fees, secured insurance, provided the Security Police department with information it needs to provide for security and they had a signed signed contract with the speaker. So far only 3 of the speakers have reached out to cam bus police. Theres no contract in place for an indoor venue and the group is quickly running out of time. Cal said they will provide security but they wont do it without a partnership. The university cannot and will not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of security based on a we havent heard from our students. So they need to hear from those students which it sounds like they are at least making an effort in that direction. If the berkeley patriot does not provide sufficient proof they are doing what they need to do for venues then they wont be allowed to be in an inside venue. But they do have a reservation in place for several of the outdoor venues. So everything still up in the air but as soon as we get that, we will be bringing that to you. And in San Francisco we just got a partial price tag for a protest that never happened. You remember the group called Patriot Prayer canceled an event at the last minute. San Francisco Police said they spent 775,000 mostly on overtime but that does not include costs at the Sheriffs Department and other agencies.
