New safety rules for uber and lyft. But a loophole could let drivers with criminal records slip through the cracks. According to new rules for rideshare companies, no fingerprinting is required. Uber and lyft can continue to use commercial background checks with the new requirement to run a check for every driver every year. But we have learned that the company lyft does not have access to criminal records in four states plus some cities and counties including San Francisco. And after assault allegations, some say more needs to be done. Your duty is to protect these women. You dont have any meaningful way of doing this except by doing a fingerprint check. The record before us demonstrates that the process currently employed does result in properly screening driver applicants for past offenses. Taxi drivers have to submit fingerprints to be run through the fbi database. Every Law Enforcement agency in the country submits to it. A bay area city wants to give power to the people to catch speeding drivers. Gilroy is considering arming its residents with radar guns. Kpix 5s maria medina has the story. Reporter the mayor of gilroy says this is one of the problem areas. The speed limit is 35. But people go much faster than that. In the middle of the night you can hear people speeding, creatures screeching. Reporter he says this road is so dangerous in gilroy, he doesnt allow his children it play in the front yard. I have two kids and definitely its concerning. Reporter his neighbor agrees. I would never let my kids play out in the front yard unsupervised. Even supervised i wouldnt even let them play in the front yard. Thats how bad it is. Speeding is happening all over the city but we cant have enough officers to enforce it. Reporter he wants to arm resident in the city with radar gun, like traffic officers to catch speeders and turn them in. Residents would be able to check out a gun. They would work in pairs. Reporter the mayor says police would then give the registered car owner a warning. He emphasizes this is just one of several ideas. I dont really think it would work. You have to be certified to have a radar gun. Reporter whether the suggestion speeds through city hoops is unknown for now but they want to get more drivers to obey the law. My goal is to empower residents to control speeding in their neighborhood. I think its good. Trying to find a solution, definitely. Im not sure thats right the right solution but we need one. Dozens of people staged a sitin outside the offices of san jose mayor sam liccardo saying that he is ignoring their concerns about skyrocketing rent in the city. They say that they want to tell the mayor face to face how they feel about rent control issues. City council will consider changes to rent control policies on tuesday. Activists fear it could include a green light for landlords to charge more fees. They say the mayor has been talking with landlords and developers. You need to understand that we also exist.
