Late last night, the thomas fire hopped the highway 101 in Ventura County near solimar beach and the fire made it all the way to the shoreline. Smoke from the three fires affecting air quality throughout the area. On your left, the satellite image taken from space shows how bad conditions are right now. A smoke advisory and bad air quality warning is issued for the west and east san fernando valleys and beach areas of the counties. Its hazy all across Southern California. Its something of course we saw with the wine country wildfires wine. The smoke lasted for days. You have to feel for them. The problems in Southern California with those windy conditions, they cant get the choppers up because its dangerous when you have those high winds. So whats the situation there now . Unfortunately, the winds are not going to be calming down for a while until about friday. Its because this High Pressure over the great basin is really leading to more of those santa anas. Theres a slight break but not enough to get rid of this red flag warning. They will have that until 8 p. M. On friday and here are the details of it. Damaging winds expected, again, gusts 50 to 80 Miles Per Hour. The worst of it will be thursday into friday. Thats when that High Pressure builds even more. And look at those humidity levels. During the day, dropping down to 4 to 15 . Humidity overnight conditions continue to stay dry, as well. And look at this. This High Pressure is whats bringing us a lot of sunshine also cold air. But also for them, dry air continues. And those santa ana winds. The thomas fire moves over 101 to the coast. The wind stream on this map, these are the current directions. You can get a sense for how windy it is. Some areas are dealing with freezing conditions like we are. So our conditions now very cool. Our temperatures are in the 30s for concord. Those fires in Southern California certainly a reminder sobering one of the wine country wildfires that swept through in october. And people affected by those fires have until monday to register with fema for Disaster Assistance and to apply for low interest disaster loans with the Small Business administration. In Sonoma County alone, more than 4500 right of entry applications have been processed for debris removal. There are also 528 private Program Applications and more than 400 have been approved to start work. Time now 6 03. A few accidents out there. Kpix 5s Jessica Flores is live outside city hall with more. Reporter 3,000 workers on strike today for the second day in a row shutting down city service and facilities in oakland. We expect a group to be here on picket lines. They were here yesterday at city hall and we expect more to protest the fact that they have not reached an agreement with the city. Unions representing workers and Nonemergency Services including public works and Parking Enforcement say the strike comes as months of negotiations broke down. Now, the main Sticking Point wages. The union wants a guarantees 8 raise over a twoyear period. The city is offering 6 over two years but there is a catch. The second year is tied to revenue growth. People deserve to have their potholes filled, trashed collected. There are families served by libraries, Senior Centers and rec centers. We cannot make financials decision today that we cannot afford either today but particularly in the long term. We havent had a contract in so long, so we just want our cost of living so we can be able to stay in oakland. Reporter mayor libby schaaf says the strike is unlawful because there isnt an official impasse. The city could get a court order to end the strike. Residents here in oakland again will go without head start programs, libraries, Senior Centers, rec centers and street sweeping among other services. Now, the union says this strike will continue until the two sides can agree to go back to the bargaining table. Meanwhile, firefighters, police officers, they are still on the job. The state trial is over but now the man who killed kate steinle is federally charged with felon in possession of a firearm and alien in possession of a firearm. Although the jury last week acquitted Jose Ines Garcia zarate on murder and manslaughter charges it convicted him of the charge of felon in possession of a firearm.
