mayor ed lee as the city begins to look toward the future. Kpix 5s joe vazquez reports from city hall with reaction to the mayors death and where we go from here. Reporter from the front steps of city hall to the front gate of the mayors house in glen park, theres an outpouring of love and gratitude as the shock of the sudden death of mayor ed lee sinks in. The mayor was shopping at safeway when he collapsed. He was in cardiac arrest. He died at the hospital. I dont know

mayor, ed lee was an inspiration for many, especially in chinatown, where he worked as an activist before his long career at city hall. [ music ] the mayor was a tireless advocate for tenants, immigrants, the disadvantage. We have like were the a loss but honored by his legacy. leaders at times. There is a call for unity. This is a sad moment for
San Francisco
. Its important for us to come together to stand behind the family of mayor ed lee and express your condolences to the family and colleagues. Ed was not a politician. He did not always deliver the best sound bite or carry the room one spoken cries ma. What mattered most charisma. What mattered most to him always was helping fellow service. Reporter the president of the board of supervisors is now the acting mayor, london breed. I ask for your patience and your support and i ask for your prayers. Reporter she has a full schedule fulfilling the duties of her new position tomorrow as she and her colleagues continue to mourn. At 65, he cleared died much too early. Transit systems slowed to a halt to honor mayor lee at noon. Trains and buses briefly paused as the operators made a public announcement. All flags across

will be at halfstaff for 30 days to honor mayor ed lee. He was not just focused on issues in his own city but cared about the entire bay area. Mark sayre reports from san jose the bay areas other big city mayors are feeling the loss. Reporter in 2015, mayor lee appeared on public tv with san jose mayor sam liccardo and oakland mayor libby schaaf saying the three were teaming up to form a regional coalition. When we do all of this together, we raise the entire bay area to compete on a worldwide level because every company thats now established in any of our cities, they think globally. Reporter over the years, the three mayors worked together on an ongoing in shared areas of concern including
Affordable Housing
and transportation. I lost a good friend. But

lost a great champion. Reporter mayor sam liccardo says lee was a friend, mentor and advocate for

and the quality of life in the entire bay area. He cared so much about working together. And its a great legacy his leadership. Reporter mayor schaaf revealed a plan hatched by lee for all three mayors to go to the wine country as a show of support for fire victims and get the tourism economy back on its feet. He and sam liccardo and i were going to drive up to napa, have dinner at a restaurant in the napa valley just to send a message of our solidarity with the mayors who went through such tragic losses in that fire. . Thats already scheduled. It will still happen. But because now we dont have a mayor who has been officially elected, we need to elect one so to find someone who will serve from 2018 to 2019 we are going to have an election in june of 2018. June 5, 2018, is the election for the person who will serve the final year. Reporter the board of supervisors can elect an interim mayor to serve until the june election or allow london breed to remain as acting mayor and president of the board of supervisors. As a young lawyer, mayor ed lee joined the

asian law caucus organizing a rent strike in

s chinatown. Lee worked with that organization for 13 years from 1976 to 1989. By the 90s he had headed

I just checked some of the humidity levels in berkeley just at 29 for this hour of the morning. Of course, it gets drier later in the day. Air quality unhealthy for sensitive groups across the north bay. Moderate for the rest of the bay area. Sixth straight day of spare the air alerts. Tomorrow will be the 7th day in a row. Water vapor imagery shows how dry this air is. Its going to stay this way, no shift yet of any kind of sea breeze to bring moisture. But well be watching that very closely because your skin, the chapped lips will feel it. Right now, we are tracking a slowdown and this is if you are heading towards the lower deck of the bay bridge. Heres a live look. This is interstate 80 right at 6th street so just before that last

exit, that eastbound direction on the right side of your screen, we were seeing a big backup develop on the lower deck of the bay bridge. Caltrans is doing some roadwork that has the three right lanes closed just as you exit the tunnel there and when you head down the decline but it looks like according to our sensors they may be wrapping that up now. S. Senate in 25 years. Doug jones will head to capitol hill after narrowly defeating roy moore. The former u. S. Attorney finished a point and a half ahead of his republican rival. Jones will serve the see the held by attorney general jeff sessions. Speaking to supporters in birmingham last night, jones said alabama has been at a crossroads in the past but he believes voters finally took the right path forward. These pink flyers quite literally the first signs that public works employees are back on the job. They warned people in the massive homeless encampment on 6th and brush that the city has deemed the area uninhabitable and will be clearing it out. James, who has a tent here, was watching friends picking through their belongings preparing to leave. They are trying to get away fast. Reporter this man said he would rather live on the streets than in a tool shed. He is talking about the 20 tuff sheds the city built to house the homeless. James said he was one of the first to accept the citys invite to move into the tuff shed shelter and he is glad he did. Oh, its been beautiful. At the san jose hall of justice yesterday, sierra lamars mother told the defendant, i find it incomprehensible you can make a choice to perform a heinous crime to rape and murder a child, you would rob sierra of what god had planned for her. that started on snake road where two houses were under construction. 30mileanhour winds fanned the flames. Neighbors woke them up to get out. I grabbed my cat. I got out. We had a rain of fire covering us across the sylmar down the hill so it was terrifying. Reporter the houses that were under construction were destroyed. Several other homes were also damaged. Firefighters are make some progress in their battle against the massive thomas fire in ventura and santa barbras counties. Its 25 contained. Since it began more than a week ago near st. Paula, the fire has burned 236,000 acres and destroyed more than 900 structures. Meanwhile, in los angeles, investigators say a cooking fire at a homeless encampment sparked a wildfire in the bel air region. The skirball is now 85 contained. Big difference between the

It happened around 6 00 last night on the citys north side. Investigators say that the man was walking on the tracks at first and rosemary streets south of the station. It was a northbound train from santa teresa headed to alum rock and there were 100 passengers on board. None of them reported injuries in the incident. They have been transported safely to another train. The investigation forced the vta to use a bus bridge in the area much of the night. Its unclear why the man was on the tracks.
