Ocean Cleanup<\/a> has now accomplished round one of its goal, cleaning up the pacific garbage patch, and what theyve brought in has an interesting end. Surrounded by bags of trash from the pacific garbage patch the
Ocean Cleanup<\/a> showed off everything from massive nets to microplastics, but they were mostly there to announce the projects success. Launched from alameda september last year, the team has spent more than the last 12 months ironing out bugs until finally in october of this year it worked. We had our ups and downs. We had problems. We had structural failures, but eventually the team was able to take those lessons into account and actually get to a point that we had a system that was successfully catching plastic. This haul was only a small part of the big plan to clean 50 of the patch in five years by building a whole fleet of similar systems. The group is also working to identify the source of all the plastic in an effort to prevent further future pollution. Then the trash will go on to live a second life fueling the rest of the cleanup. What were going to do is were going to recycle this plastic and were going to turn it into beautiful sustainable products. 100 of the proceeds of the sale of those products, whatever they may end up being, will go back into the project funding the next round of clean up, but this time on a major scale. Emily turner, kpix5. I want to know what the products are going to be. Stay tuned as we say in show biz. In the meantime enjoy the sunshine monday, not going to last a long time. Neither will this. Its a commercial break. For 15 days this fall the kincade fire raged in sonoma county. Before the final flame was extinguished it burned more than 77,000 acres and damaged or destroyed 400 homes and other buildings including the historic winery at soda rock. This is the story of what was lost in that fire. It is the story of a late fall harvest of ember and ash, but it is also the story of resilience, recovery and rebuilding and the efforts in the meantime to build community. The wind was definitely here. The fire is spreading now downhill. Were looking at 80, 90mile an hour winds. My main concern right now is those valley winds are going to start hitting the top of the ridge here and might start to blow out. It took just one unforgiving night of fire and fierce wind. The fire has shot the containment lines. To erase a labor of love a decade in the making. My son called and said soda rocks on fire. I was just in shock and agony for the next four or five days. From 2000 until 2010 ken wilson lovingly restored the winery at soda rock in sonoma countys alexander valley. The main wall is probably the main inspiration for why i loved that site. The front wall just spoke to me. But by dawn of a nightmarish night in late october of this year this is all that was left of his dream, a bitter harvest of ember and ash. Hard to remember even where you are, you know, what room im in. Im looking at this channel here for the drain, the drain in the concrete. So i know im in that production room. But sometimes our dreams prove more durable than even we realize. The front facade, the original wall of the winery that had so inspired ken, still stood and the giant wild boar sculpture affectionately known as lord snort had survived as well and most importantly and improbably the old wood barn had with stood the frames, too. Its a symbol of resilience in sonoma county. Its definitely a place for people to come together and share their experiences. And so the seeds of an idea took root. Ken reopened what was left of the winery for daily tastings, his staff pouring the wine, his customers often pouring out their hearts. Ive been here three years and its been fire after fire. We got notified around 10 30 saturday morning that we needed to be evacuated. You can look at it from afar and its like a fire, but when its coming on you, it is coming on you. We will be here for when they do rebuild. Ken is planning to rebuild the winery reborn from the ruins. There is even talk of using the remnants of the winerys old metal support beams for a brand new sculpture, a companion to lord snort. Those beams are in there, but theyre all twisted and bent. So we got the material in there that we could salvage to put into a sculpture. And until then theres wine raised in sadness for what was lost and celebration for what yet survives. Theyre helping me. Were helping each other. Its a good reciprocal thing. There is hope here forged in fire ready to rebuild and thats something worth toasting, something always to be thankful for. Ken wilson estimates it will take at least two to three years to rebuilt the winery. He says because the grapes were harvested before the fire and production is handled offsite, the fire should not affect next years vintage. And the soda rock winery is open for tastings daily from 11 00 to 4 00. Whats striking about that piece is not only the writing, but also the photography. Devin shoots his own stuff.
