As the Economic Impact starts to sink in, the italian Tourism Industry is already predicting losses of 8 billion. Good morning from the vatican, which has Just Announced its first case. The question now is what kind of impact is that going to have in the run up to holy week and easter next month. With cases across italy surging again, now at more than 4,600, nearly 200 dead, it was only a matter of time before the virus penetrated the vatican walls, too. In extreme measures to face the spread headon, italy ordered a nationwide shutdown of schools and universities. American students studying abroad had already got the call to pull out. Like eric meade from montgomery county, maryland. If i want to stay, like i should be able to stay. So if it were up to you, you would be like, no way, im staying . The government has urged older citizens to stay indoors. As the crisis deepens, italy now faces a new normal and an uncertain future. American University President richard hodges. When you first got an idea of what was going on, what went through your mind . It could threaten the future of the university. That dramatic . Yes, because who knows how long this will go on for. Students we spoke to are less worried of falling ill with the virus than being stuck here or infecting Family Members back home. I think, like, its just like its spreading everywhere, like i dont think america is going to be like a special case where just like magically it doesnt spread. Reporter were told students will finish their coursework online. By the way, they said they were fine being treated by the Italian Health care system. Its not only very good, its free, michelle. How about that. Thank you. Joining us from los angeles with more on the coronavirus outbreak is cbs medical con t b contributor, dr. David agus. Good morning. Good morning. Ive spoken to people who are in a dead panic or say that the media are blowing this out of proportion. Which is it . Theres no question that most people in the United States, if they do get this virus, and a good portion will, will survive and will not get that sick. The problem is we have to protect the elderly and the people with other medical conditions because it all happens at once, it will overwhelm our million system and there will be thousands and thousands of deaths that we dont need. So we have to put in these, you know, precautions and we have to be aggressive now so that it doesnt happen. Doctor, one of the things thats difficult here is how general the symptoms can be. So for all the people asking or wondering right now who are concerned, when is it time for someone, a friend, a family acquaintance, anyone else to see the doctor . Thats a great question, jeff. Anyone who has mild symptoms now should selfquarantine. That is stay home and wait until the symptoms go away. And when youre a day free, you can go back out. The problem is if we all went to the doctor now and we have any runny nose in the middle of flu season we would overwhelm and you sit in the waiting room with 100 other people who are coughing. If you didnt have it going in, you will going out. So when you have symptoms that are serious or youre starting to really worry, then you should call your doctor and go to the medical system. But otherwise, try to selfquarantine. Weve heard a lot about people that are more at risk and the cdc issued some new guidelines for some of those. What have we seen as far as changed in that regard . Well, yesterday the cdc said, lacen, elderly people, do not leave your home as much as possible. Dont go out to places with large numbers of people getting together. And i think theyre right. I think we have to be cautious for people who are at risk. So if you are older, 80s, you probably shouldnt get on a plane and go into areas, large malls and areas where people are congregating because its too high a risk. What were seeing is that people who are younger have mild symptoms. And starting mid 50s it starts to get worse and worse. And along those lines, for people that are washing hands and using antibacterial gels, is that actually working at this point . Do we know . The bottom line is we know so little about this virus. The best way to fight a virus and to stop a pandemic from spreading is to have tests and to have knowledge. And our response was very delayed here. So washing the hands, critical. Soap or antibacterial washes, dont touch your face, all the things youre told can help. But if somebody coughs, theres particles in the air and you can not stop that by any measures. So many regards, be careful where you are and where you go, especially if youre high risk. We learned, dave, last night that 900,000 tests have been shipped out and there are more to come. Are we making enough progress on that front . No, were not there yet. You know, im hearing over and over again from medical Centers Across and governors are calling me saying we dont have the tests we need. So tests were shipped out. And realize that its multiple tests per person. The initial test is two swabs and then we pete it, many times several time. So 900,000 tests doesnt equal 900,000 individual patients. We need the infrastructure to do the testing. You can ship a large number of tests. Unless you have people trained and equipment to do it, its not going to be well implemented. Over the next several weeks that will happen. But it certainly is weeks late to stop the spread of this. Theyre going to be an enormous increase in the number of cases in the United States when we do more testing. Doctor, beyond getting the testing kits out, this 8. 3 billion spending bill that was signed by the president yesterday, how else should that money be used to fight coronavirus . Well, much of that money is used for future research, developing future vaccines, understanding the virus better. But we need leadership and we need to develop new ways of doing testing. In korea they do drivethru testing, you dont feel well, somebody in a space suit swabs you and you get called and get the result. In the United States you go to the emergency room for three and a half hours and everyone is coughing around you when you get your results. We need infrastructure here in the United States to do things better. Thank you. Coming up in our next half hour, the impact coronavirus is having on the travel industry and what you should do if youve already booked a trip. Thats ahead. Businesses have been canceling conferences and restricting Company Travel and cruise lines, hotels are seeing demands plummet. Here to tell us about the impact and what to be aware of if youre traveling is jessie from conde nast. Clearly a major impact across the economy right now. Is there a comparable event in modern times that youve seen . I think this kind of epidemic is unprecedented. Would point to is the immediate days after september 11th. I think there was so much uncertainty about what was going to happen next. There were a lot of people who wondered if it might be the first of a series of attacks and people were afraid to fly. I think the uncertainty is whats affecting the markets and affecting travelers choices. With the spread to 80 countries, including the United States, the question jeff just posed, he has a cruise coming up. What are the cancellation policies and how accommodating are these businesses . They are so lenient right now. The whole industry is bending over backwards to make it okay for their client base, because they know how important the people who use their services are for them in the longterm and theyre willing to take a shortterm hit to make people feel comfortable traveling in the future. I think that youve seen it with united, all the airlines, but especially with the cruise industry, which has probably taken the biggest pr hit as a result of this, and the cruise industry, multiple Cruise Companies are offering these incredibly lenient weve never seen them before. Theyre basically saying well give you the exact same credit back for any trip within 15 or 18 months. Precisely. And thats happening with Royal Caribbean and you were just talking about disney. And i think well see that for a while and we might see other stuff like incentives to get people cruising again. I think in addition to that, its worth pointing out the really comprehensive prescreening and the flexibility with the itinerary and i want to just take a moment to absolute these people because i feel like they get a lot of guff. Its inconvenient for travelers and travelers hate to be inconvenienced but there is a really tough situation and, you know, you might just have to spend an hour waiting for the next representative to help you out. But they will come and they will help you. Jeff has something planned. My mom has a couple of trips coming up. We were talking about this last night because she was trying to get the most up to dait information because there is uncertainty. So where can people go to make sure theyre up to date . I think communicate with your airline. I think communicate with your travel adviser if youre booking a trip through a travel adviser, which we highly recommend doing at conde nast because these are the unicorns who know everything and have the most up to date information about everything. Certainly follow what the cdc and the state health and World Health Organization are saying and take it seriously. But i also want to say like every traveller is different and every traveller has to make their own decision based on what they are, where theyre going, what their age and health are. But dont be afraid to travel. What is the longterm impact . I think we dont know yet. But i do think that the travel industry has proven itself to be incredibly resilient and i think they are prepared, as much as one can be for events like this. The most important thing is that once theres more certainty about whats going to happen with all of this, people start traveling again. All right, thank you. Its around accident waiting to happen. In the sprawling aircraft factories on the west coast, teams of women flushed the rivets that held together the skin on the b24. Er image embodies the cando spirit of america during the Second World War and the women who stepped in to build the tanks, ships and airplanes that would lead the allies to victory. Rosie is riveter was based on the very real Rosalyn Walter who died in manhattan this week at the age of 95. She was just 19 when she volunteered to take a job on the night shift of a Connecticut Assembly line. It was a graveyard shift, it was 6 30 at night to 5 30 in the morning with two tenminute breaks and a half hour for dinner. It was a very tough shift. She might have toiled in anonymity. But in 1942 walter was profiled in a local newspaper article and that inspired congress writers red evans and John Jacob Lowe to pen the tune rosie is riveter which became a hit. The inspiring tune and story put rosie on recruiting posters for trade by different models, but always with the rolledup sleeves and head scarf that became her trademark. After the war, walter found her ways to make the world a better place. So she devoted her attention and her familys fortune to an emerging form of education, public television. Becoming one of the main ben factors of pbs. She was the biggest funder in the history of pbs. She had the soul of a producer. She was really smart. She had a nose for talent. She understood stories and had a real passion for quality, and yet she was incredibly humble. Over the years, walters contributions financed countless programs, including great performances, american masters and the acclaimed documentaries of filmmaker ken burns. She was very proud of what she did during the war and proud of the sacrifices she made. Though when you asked her how demanding it was, she would be a little humble. And if you knew, she would tell you, but she would never boast about it. And consider this. So she was the daughter of the dean of Long Island University and the president of a farmer company, which was the precursor to bristolmyers squibb. Here she was working on a factory line. She went on to help disadvantaged children in schools and wildlife causes and open spaces we have to thank for her. She had the soul of a producer. She did. I love it. Well, she teaches batters how to better hit the ball and her own career, well, you might say she scored a home run, achieving a role no woman has held before in sports. Weve got details ahead. For some of you, your local news is next. The rest stick around, youre watching cbs this morning saturday. Im friends with bernie, but as ive said many times on the debate stage, i dont think we should have a socialist heading up our ticket and i think we should have someone, as one prominent democratic said, is listening to who the people are. Barack obama said a few months ago that we should Pay Attention to where they are. I dont want they want to kick 149 million americans off their health insurance. But sanders seem to be real. He has arguably the most enthusiastic supporters, the biggest rallies. He has a lot of people hes brought with him and my hope, because i saw what happened in 2018, were the most progressive people in our party joined together with moderates and independents and moderate republicans, we all joined together to support candidates for the house. Thats how we turned the house of representatives into the peoples house. Thats how they passed gun safety legislation, climat change. Thats how they finally did something when it comes to gun safety. All of those bills are sitting on Mitch Mcconnells desk. So i see this as part of the march that started the day after the inauguration and i see joe biden as a candidate that can lead that march. Did joe biden promise you anything . No, not at all. Was there any discussion of it . No, nothing. Do you want to be joe bidens vp . I just ended my own campaign and i am more than happy to go back to minnesota today to thank our incredible staff and the people of my state and thats my plan. Ive got a day job. I love the senate and im also going to be helping joe biden. That doesnt answer the question do you want to be joe bidens vp. I never look at hypotheticals. Theres a lot going on here. First the latest on the coronavirus, it has spread across the United States. There are now nearly 350 confirmed cases in 29 states. Nationwide 17 people have died. The number includes two elderly people in florida who were the first to die on the east coast last night. On friday, Vice President pence announced 21 people are board the grand princess cruise ship tested positive for the illness. The ship with 3,500 people still on board is circling after being denied access to San Francisco bay. While visiting the centers for deez control on friday, pump said they would prefer to have the passengers and crew stay on board under quarantine. If it were up to me, i would be inclined to say leave everybody on the ship for a period of time and you use the ship as your base. But a lot of people would rather do it a different way. They would rather quarantine people on land. When they do that, our numbers are going to go up. President , who is coordinating the Coronavirus Response says to bring the ship to a noncommercial port this weekend to test everyone on board. Health Officials Say at least ten people who were previously on the ship were infected. In austin, texas, organizers of south by southwest festival have canceled the arts and Technology Event that was scheduled for next week. The gathering draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, but was canceled due to concerns about the coronavirus. Several highprofile companies had already announced plans to pull out of the festival before fridays formal announcement. President trump paid a visit to the centers for Disease Control and prevention in atlanta friday as he tried to tamp down concerns about the outbreak. Before leaving washington, mr. Trump signed an 8. 3 billion funding bill to research the disease and stop it from spreading. The administration is also working to meet the surging demand for test kits. The goal is to speed up the process between a person showing symptoms and confirmation of an infection. For the fourth time in his first term, President Trump is replacing his white house chief of staff. Late last night mr. Trump tweeted his decision to move acting chief of staff mick mull vinnie out in favor of North Carolina congresman mark meadows. The president is spending the weekend at his florida resort. Cbs correspondent weijia jiang is traveling with the wt. What can you tell us about the timing . Reporter cbs has learned this has been in the works for weeks. He had a diminishing role after he received sharp criticism for a briefing he held during the impeachment proceedings. President trump wanted to wait until all of that wrapped up before shaking things up. The timing also has to do with the 2020 race heating up. The president announced that mulvaney would be the special envoy to northern ireland, but he will also play a big role in mr. Trumps reelection campaign. It is notable that mulvaney was always working under the acting title, but meadows will be the permanent chief of staff. He has been one of the president s fiercest defenders on capitol hill and we dont have many details yet about his transition, but we expect it will be a smooth one because he is so close to President Trump, already familiar with his cabinet and key staff members. In fact, cbs news has learned that when Senior Adviser Steven Miller recently got married, meadows was sitting at the same table as mr. Trump. Mulvaney was not. Jeff. Thank you very much. His work has taken on some of the most pro pound issues in american culture, often with a cutting sense of humor. Hes out with his first novel since winning the National Book award. Its set in the summer of 1969. For mcbride its a return to his roots and a look at his vision for the future. Reporter writing books has made James Mcbride famous, but writing music may bring him his greatest joyce. Music gives me a lot of framework and gives me a motor to write. Reporter both have allowed him to share experiences and lessons shape by nontraditional beginnings. Everything ive done in my career really has everything to do with my mother. She was a white woman. She raised 12 black children at a time when that wasnt very popular. His work gained National Attention 25 years ago with the release of the color of water which made tribute to his mother, ruth mcbride jordan, a woman who in 1942 married a black man and was disowned by her family. Living in the neighborhood of red hook, she had eight kids together. James was the youngest. His father, andrew mcbride, died while his mother was pregnant with james. But ruth remarried, had four more children, and raised all 12 kids in poverty. My growing up years has giving me the kind of insight into race and class that has been an advantage for me as a writer because i realize that deep down inside it truly does not matter. What doesnt matter . This whole business of race. I mean, what difference does it make . Why . I simply refuse to accept that white people cant dance and that black people can play basketball only. That stuff is just puff and smoke. Its just marketing. Do people listen to that . Not all the time. One of the reasons why i wrote deacon King Congress is because i wanted to show a world where actually got along. It takes place in the same neighborhood, mcbride once called home. When you write fiction, you create a world where good things happen. What happens is you hear people and then characters are created in your mind based on or inspired by the people you meet. Play the piano . Yeah. You play, too . No. And then they move in directions that you hope will show their better qualities. The book tells the story of an aging alcoholic who attends a church just like mcbrides. This church my parents founded in the living room of their home in the projects, which is across the street. This is just a humble little place, but its where a lot of my personal history is. I got married right here. I got married right at this spot where were standing. Can i speak with you a minute . Some of the characters in the book might seem familiar. If you saw spike lees 2012 movie red hook summer filmed on location at the memorial baptist. Praise jesus. You dont remember me . No, sir. Mcbride cowrote the screen play with lee but is open about his unhappiness with the overall depiction of the church in this and other films. I didnt really feel that the vision and version of the church that existed in red hook summer was something that i personally felt proud of. You need help and there aint no harm in needing help. Right there in the so god can strike you down, you hypocrite. The stereo typical view of the black church is pretty bad. Really . I think so, yeah. The tyler perry films showing black women with wigs and theyre always going you know, thats not funny to me. I dont think tyler perry is trying to do that in a nasty way. You just dont think its what you see in the church . I dont have anything against tyler perry and his career, but i think the depiction of africanamericans in church hooting and hollering and always fat and big and ignorant is wrong. I say that in capital letters with my name behind it. I dont think its accurate. Deacon King Congress is mcbrides attempt to reintroduce the church. Its a place where he reconnects with his past. A photo of the father he never met hangs at the entrance. Its also where he comes to give back. Every saturday morning for the last six years, mcbride has come here to teach a music class for neighborhood children. And then the organist usually goes into a one, and they play on the five chord. These days, mcbride does most of his writing in southern new jersey in the quiet town of lambertville. You have to step back from a story to see it. When i look back to new york from here, i can see it clearly. He starts every project on an old smith corona typewriter before transitioning to a computer. Including the good lord bird which won the National Book award. It was a crowning moment, one that emerged from enormous personal pain. My mother died in january of 2010. My niece died a couple of weeks later. And then my marriage fell apart. My divorce destroyed me. It just crushed me. I never expected that to happen. And so it was a kind of wonderful moment of validation for me, i suppose, because it proved that i could write fiction. There was a lot of nonfiction writers that cant make the crossing to fiction. And i think i made the crossing to fiction in part because i became willing to accept what gods purpose was for me. Whatever that is that i i learned that i couldnt control things. Mcbride says that his dream in old age is to teach music fulltime. Until then, he writes it. Along with his books. Trying to bridge old divides and new ones. Were living in difficult times. People make millions of dollars talking about our differences, but i dont believe because a person likes a statue of general lee that theyre a bad person or that they voted for donald trump that something is wrong with them. Everyone has their own truth. So deacon king kong is your attempt at outreach . Its my attempt to get people to laugh at a time that theres not a whole lot to laugh about. And its an attempt to get people to see that we have a lot more in common than we are different. Deacon king kong is a very funny book, its also a very serious book, which is a lot of what mcbrides work is all about. 1969, it was the age of unrest, the age of new beginnings. It was a crucial time for us. It was. And a lot of baseball in the book, too. Yeah . Some of the main characters. So he brings it altogether. Hes just a fascinating guy, to spend some time with. Hell talk about anything. Hell open up about anything. So talented. You guys are wellsuited for one another. I like seeing you two have a conversation. We had fun. You mentioned baseball. Thats a good tran zig. Big news for baseball, up next, one womans long and difficult journey to break new ground in sports. Youre watching cbs this morning saturday. This year it also marks the next step for women in the sport. The San Francisco giants hired alyssa nakin as an assistant coach. The new york yankees marked now ground hiring Rachel Balkovec. Shes the first woman to become a fulltime hitting coach in a Major League Organization. Did you have any nerves before your first day . Yeah. They were nerves of excitement as Rachel Balkovec became the first woman to wear the iconic new york yankee pinstripes. It actually changes the way that i kind of feel throughout my days. Rachel hopes to have an impact on the Yankees Minor League players as a new hitting coach in the club. I think theres always a bit of curiosity surrounding it, like why is she here, does she know her stuff. I would venture to say any player thats worked with me says she puts in the work, shes knowledgeable. It includes two degrees in Human Movement science. The expertise she brings to the yankees can best be described as Data Driven Development from eyetracking and ball spin to swink mechanics. Yankees hitting coordinator Dillon Lawson wanted rachel on his team. Selfishly she makes me as a coach better. Lawson met rachel four years ago when she worked as a Minor League Strength coach for the houston astros. I think its pretty clear when someone is elite at their job. They stand out. Shes overqualified for almost every job that shes ever had. Having the goods and a competitive resume wasnt enough to land rachel a coaching job in a mans sport when she first started looking. I applied to eight to ten jobs and it just was like crickets. Finally, one team called and said they wanted to hire her. Then something changed. He was like, rachel, im really sorry. I want to be honest with you, though, we cant hire you and its because youre a woman. And i just was shocked. First of all, you know, thats illegal, and she said well, it gets worse. And i was like how could this possibly get worse . He said i also called around to all the other people that i knew had positions open and they also said the same thing. And this was a Major League Organization . Yeah. Do you want to say who . Oh, absolutely not. He tried to help me. This was 2013. Determined to find a way in, rachel created a gender neutral resume, including changing her name to ray. The response was immediate. I picked it up, i said hello and he said, hey, can i speak to ray and i just was like my face, i was like this is she. You could hear ruffling of papers and he said, sorry, im just trying to get the name right. And i thought oh, no, you just didnt know it was a girl. Did that anger you at all that just those changes make it gender neutral and now suddenly youre a great candidate . I dont know. I never felt anger necessarily. Frustration and not understanding and give me a chance, those were words that came. But not like anger. That is a lesson of if theyre not going to hire me because im a woman, i dont want to work for them anyway. Gender wasnt an issue for the saint louis cardinals, who one year later made rachel the first fulltime female strength coach in major league affiliated baseball. She credits her dad with first introducing her to the power of lifting. Im sure i was the only 11yearold girl in the weight room at the time but i didnt notice because i was hanging out with my dad and over time that became a habit for me personally. Rachel, take me back to early childhood. Oh, gosh. What were you like as a kid . Ive always been like a little crazy. By crazy, she means driven to succeed at every sport. Especially softball. But in college, rachel began to struggle with anxiety on the field, finding solace in the weight room. I wanted to play professional softball. I was physically probably going to be able to do that, but just mentally i was a mess. So pretty quickly i had thought about being a strength and conditioning coach and it led to me sitting here with you somehow. Somehow this crazy journey has led to me sitting here. With 27 world series titles, the yankees are the most successful franchise in all of professional sports frchl. If youre a part of history and tradition, you have to look to the future. The assistant general manager, its her 19th clear with the club, the first to have women in senior positions of management. Initially front offices and coaching staffs were really populated by former players. Now intellect is prized. The door opened for rachel because shes extremely qualified and bringing a new way of training and a new vision of training that we were hungry for. I went through a lot. Now as rachel shares her story with young women. Ive been discriminated against, ive been fired. She explains that every obstacle can income another opportunity. Despite any kind of struggle that ive had, i have no regrets. I look at other people and im like, oh, you havent been discriminated against . Oh, im sorry. Because it just pushed me and made me stronger. It was motivation for you . It just completely fortified my soul. Help spread the crazy, yes, help spread the crazy. Dont hold it back. Theres so much that i can say about her. One point i want to point out because people say she didnt play baseball be, she was a softball player. Things are changing in the game. They want to have on staff guys who used to play major league baseball, but what shes talking about is a science, the eyetracking and the body movement. There are guys with physics degrees that are on the yankees staff right now. The idea, jean said, is its not thinking outside the box. They are widening the box. Because if you are the yankees, you need to figure out what is next for everyone and get in front of it. Thats opened the door for not just women in baseball, but men who maybe did not play major league baseball. But its great to see women there. One of the greatest coaches of all time with coach lombardi and never played a day of football. It was an unusual rescue for a Police Officer. What he saved was one young girls long time dream. Im just the girl who cant no, my producer called me. She came two weeks early. My daughter came two weeks early and i called the producer, woman at the time and said i wont be at work today, but i have a really good excuse. She called me up 20 minutes later and she said if it wouldnt be too much trouble, do you think you could come down to the sidewalk and do the last 20 minutes of the show. Im like they wont let me walk to the bathroom. And im like, note to self, they are not paying you nearly as much as youre worth to these people. And i said if its okay with the hospital and doesnt disturb anybody, i will do it on one condition, hair and makeup come. There i was, introducing our newest viewer. How are you feeling . Did t welcome back to cbs this morning saturday. We begin this half hour with an invitation to a dance. Just an annual event in a small town in arkansas. But as jamie yuccas reports, it meant the world to one little girl. Reporter officer nick harvey gets asked a lot of questions patrolling the halls of central elementary. But this time he was about to do the asking. I did not want to be rejected by a 2nd grader. What would that have been like . Humiliating. His boss had told him about a volunteer opportunity to escort children in need to the local annual daddy daughter dance. She was sitting at the lunch table and i walked up and im like, hey, did you talk to your mom and shes like yes. And im like, so, i said would you like to be my date for the daddy daughter dance, and im like, okay, were good. 8yearold avew coxs father passed away over the holidays. Ive been wanting to go for a long time but my dad couldnt take me. Im truly grateful, because he definitely provided a bright spot in our crazy month we had had before. With the help of her mom and a family friend, avey picked out the perfect dress. And i believe they went through about ten dresses and the one that avey wore was i think the last one. She had her heart set on that one. Officer harvey showed up in his police cruiser. They posed for pictures. Another officer ordered a limo to take them to the dance. Had you ever been in a limo before . Huhuh. What was your favorite part of the night . Getting to dance with him. That made him smile. Were you happy you got to go . Yeah. Would you go again . Do you hope he asks you again . Do you feel like you can count on them . Uhhuh. I can count on her, too. Reporter and his gesture may already be having an impact. Do you want to be a Police Officer . Uhhuh. Why . Because of nick . Whats the lesson you learned out of this . Dont take anything for granted. Enjoy your kids. Appreciate the childhood, because theyre not going to be young forever. This morning on a special edition of the dish, you may know jet tila, but in los angeles hes famous for a different reason. His family was thought to be the first thai Grocery Store in the u. S. We visited thai town with tila to discuss how hes keeping his familys legacy alive. This is a good landmark. You know youre in the heart of thai town. You cant visit l. A. s thai town but hitting a few of his haunts where his heritage is showcased through culture and cuisine. Ill basically like curate the perfect bite, a little piece of chicken and cashew and rice and you clean off a bite and this is how you take a bite. Thats how a thai person should eat. How did i do . Very efficient. Tila put thai town on the map when he brought a guy most people recognize as knowing his way around the International Food scene. I told these businesses, i was like im bringing this guy Anthony Bordaine in and you might get busy. That interview added to tilas already growing reputation. Im going to do an english muffin, poached eggs. Which ignited on cable tv. The dressing is sausage. But to understand tila, you have to go back to his chinese and thai immigrant roots. Your family laid the groundwork for thai food in america. Its kind of a big responsibility. So in 1966, my mom and my father immigrated to los angeles separately. They met a few years later because it was a little outpost. All the thai people that were coming and going were based in east hollywood, here in silver lake. They opened a Grocery Store in 1972 that fed a growing immigrant community. This really reminds me of a struggle that my parents endured and its not a sad story, but its time to put it to bed so my mom can kind of enjoy the rest of her life. His family closed down that location three months ago. But it remains the treasured example of success that built a company and seven restaurants. I have a lot of memories of the store. Theyre all fun memories until i got into my teenage years and i was just angry at that point because i had no social life. And then once i had a drivers license, dude, i drove away as fast as i could. Dropped out of school. You know what i mean . Working odd jobs. Went back to my family, you know, and begged them to work and took over. I was manager of the Grocery Store. While i was there i had a group of nonthais that were always wanting they just came back to thailand and wanted to cook dishes. Always asking how do i make pad thai and curry and this. And they were like why dont you just do a cooking class. It didnt take long for cooking classes to turn into frontpage news in the Los Angeles Times. That was it. From that moment, the next few days i got hundreds and hundreds of phone calls and that made me realize there is a need for someone to communicate not just write recipes, but i did fun little interactive cooking classes. Lo mein means soft noodles in a thick gravy. That was it. That was the moment that i was like i can do this for the rest of my life. He would veneventually open own restaurant in las vegas. I was asked to battle moromoto. I walked into the kitchen stadium and met him. It was one of those battles where no one knew me so she expected me to get pummeled. It would take good tv.
