Equipment. How reliance on china could be making it even more challenging. And songs for the soul. A stunning performance by Andrea Bocelli as millions spend easter separated from family. Well talk to him only on cbs this morning. It was so good. First, heres todays eye opener. Your world in 90 seconds. Oh, man, look at this. Its a mile wide. A series of tornadoes tore a path of destruction from louisiana to alabama. I heard this really loud bang. I was like, okay, well, the window is gone. All 50 states under a federal disaster declaration. We are hoping at the end of the month we can look around and say is there any element here we can cautiously start pulling back on. A cautious reopening of the economy. Is new jersey ready for that . I fear that we could be throwing gasoline on the fire. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is now out of the hospital after recovering from covid19. We will defeat this coronavirus and defeat it together. Easter sunday was celebrated in unique ways from a safe social distance. Churches were empty but faith was strong. All that the easter bunny not working from home this weekend. Call him an essential employee. Oh, no a really adorable moment when a Police Officer helps to reunite a team of duck chicks with their mother. And all that matters. Hey, all you cool cats and kittens. Tom hanks hosted snls first ever athome episode. Theres no such thing as saturdays anymore. Its just every day is today. On cbs this morning. Amazing grace this easter sunday, Andrea Bocelli gave a Solo Performance at the duomo in italy. I once was lost but now im found was blind but now i see announcer this mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Welcome to cbs this morning. I say this. Anthony and tony, good morning. A little Andrea Bocelli goes a long way. I got goose bumps walking from the kitchen to the living room. That was my weekend to hear anything he does. Beautiful. It was so nice. After watching everybody perform from home it was so nice to see somebody perform in a stunning backdrop. So beautiful, gayle. Yes, he always delivers. We begin with another week of staying home as you see and bringing you the news that you need. We hope, we really hope youre also staying home if youre able to. If you are one of those essential workers continuing to keep the country running, we thank you, thank you, thank you. The coronavirus death toll is still rising, as you know. Well get you up to date on that. First, anthony, theres another serious threat we need to focus on right now. Yeah, gayle. If the virus wasnt enough, theres some very dangerous weather that could affect more than 89 million americans today. One powerful storm pushing toward the east coast killed at least seven people in mississippi and one in arkansas on easter sunday. Possible tornadoes from that system caused heavy damage in the Tennessee Valley late last night. Our affiliate wgcl reports at least six more people were killed in georgia overnight. Mark strassmann reports on the destruction in the south. Reporter chattanooga is a scene of destruction. Lives tossed in the middle of the night. Compromising stayathome orders issued over the pandemic that grips the nation. Oh, man, look at this. It was a mile wide reporter mississippi was already in a state of emergency to fight the virus and declared another on sunday in the wake of devastating tornadoes there. In total, up to 46 tornadoes wewere reported across the sout sunday. One of them slammed the city of monroe, louisiana, damaging hundreds of buildings. I heard this really loud bang. I was like, okay, well, the window is gone, but i didnt expect this type of destruction. Reporter the widespread damage comes as several public shelters have closed nationwide to stop the spread of the virus. But its complicated. As officials still encourage people to seek refuge in shelters like this one, all while following social distance guidelines. In alabama, the governor urged shelters to stay open and even eased some of the States Coronavirus restrictions after a tornado reportedly injured at least three people on the Walker Jefferson county line. And in arkansas, storms brought some nasty storm cloud, strong winds and heavy rains. Just fell on this house. Reporter sending an uprooted tree through the roof of this home in hot springs and causing one fatality in jefferson county. For cbs this morning, im mark strassmann. Unfortunately, the Severe Weather threat is not over. Lonnie quinn, chief weathercaster at wcbs tv is tracking all the storms today. Lonnie, good morning. Who is in the crosshairs today . Okay, right now, tony, were talking about tornado watches anywhere from the panhandle of florida all up the eastern seaboard to portions of virginia. I wouldnt be surprised if that tornado watch pushed further north as the day went on. Whats the culprit here . Look at the lowlevel jet stream. The lowlevel jet stream, its flowing at around 120 Miles Per Hour and its important to talk about the lowlevel jet because thats air less than 10,000 feet from the surface. All it takes is a little piece to drop down. The worst of it around the carolinas. By the time you get to lunchtime, its into the chesapeake. 4 00, its into new york city. Were not talking sustained winds but gusts and even the possibility for more tornadic activity. Wind alerts. The red is most serious. Those are high Wind Warnings where its most likely to find the power outages. All the areas shaded in tan are still wind advisories. Nearly half of all americans are under some kind of a wind alert today. In the northeast we always fear that word a noreaster. This is not a noreaster. This is a southeaster. Its pushing it onshore around places like the south shore of long island where there could be coastal flooding as well. I do think there will be power outages. Turn your fridge and freezer down to the lowest setting in case you lose power. Lets go back to you, gayle. The last thing we need is bad weather but thanks for letting us know its coming. Its been another painful weekend in the coronavirus pandemic. The death toll is now more than 22,000 nationwide. Thats more than 4,000 have died since just friday. President trump has issued federal disaster declarations for all 50 states and thats a first in u. S. History. But seven states still do not have stayathome orders. In the meantime, dr. Anthony fauci, a reassuring voice for Many Americans during this crise, i may now be in trouble with the president for apparently disagreeing with him in public. David begnaud is near the naval ship comfort in new york, still the hardest hit city in america. David, what is happening there before we talk about dr. Fauci. If the trend continues, the death toll in new york state could surpass 10,000 today. 10,000 People Killed in just the last month due to the coronavirus. But there is some good news. The stayathome order appears to be working, and im talking dramatically. Theres a downward trend from hospitalizations, icu admissions and people needing to be placed on a ventilator. But there are still 18,000 people across the state of new york in the hospital this morning battling coronavirus. Totally crazy right now. Reporter there are now more than 100,000 reported covid cases in new york city. Theres also a serious shortage of swabs used to test for the coronavirus. Thats according to the citys Health Department which is now telling medical providers, only test hospitalized patients in order to preserve resources. Ever since coronavirus broke out four to six weeks ago, its been a struggle in terms of supply chain. Reporter Christopher Zavala is with northwell health. The Largest Health provider in new york state. We have enough supply to get us through the week. Reporter the rate of hospitalizations in new york seems to have stabilized when you look at the last five days. With roughly 18,000 Covid Patients statewide. Saturday, only 53 new Covid Patients were admitted to new york hospitals. We havent seen a decrease in the patients just yet. Weve had a pretty good uptick in the patients we received over the last couple of days or the past two days about 80, 85 patients per day. Lieutenant general Laura Richardson is talking about the Javits Center in manhattan which has been converted into a Field Hospital and is far busier now than it was last week. The increase in reported cases and deaths in the state of michigan was lower sunday after six Straight Days of more than 100 deaths per day. Cyndi engelhardt just returned to work as a nurse in detroit after she recovered from the coronavirus. I have a lot of survivor skills. Like, why wasnt i the nurse that was taken . Sandy brown lost her husband and son three days later and buried them in a service where the mourners had to stay there their cars as she stood alone at the grave. In new jersey, jared lovos died last friday. Jared was bigger than life. His girlfriend Jocelyn Jimenez said he had no underlying conditions and fought covid for 16 days. 10 of those on a ventilator. He was 27 years old. They kept saying hes strong. Hes young. This virus is very deceiving. Someone so healthy, someone so full of life, and then i got a call on friday saying that his heart stopped, and my heart literally stopped. Jocelyn says before they intubated jared, she was able to facetime him and they said i love you to each other before jared was placed on a ventilator. Jocelyn says jared was treated with the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine. His mother, father and stepfather all tested positive for the virus but all three of them are okay this morning. There is no wonder drug yet. David begnaud for us. Thank you very much. Lets talk about the governments top Infectious Disease expert. Hes facing blowback for appearing to contradict president trump. Over the weekend, dr. Anthony fauci suggested lives could have been saved if the president had acted sooner on warnings about the pandemic. Paula reid is at the white house for us, and shes been following this. Good morning. Could dr. Fauci lose his job over this . Good morning. Tony, the doctor is under fire from the president and his allies online after comments he made over the weekend suggesting the Trump Administration was slow to heed warnings about the coronavirus. This morning, the white house has declined to comment on our questions about whether the president has lost confidence in his top doctor. Now this all started over the weekend when the New York Times reported that the president was warned about a pandemic at the end of january. And top officials wanted to implement social distancing in february. Fauci seemed to corroborate these reports over the weekend when he confirmed that he believed that lives could have been saved if social distancing had been implemented in february. I mean, obviously, if we had, right from the very beginning, shut everything down it may have been a little bit different, but there was a lot of pushback about shutting things down back then. Reporter on twitter last night, the president pushed back against the New York Times report describing it as fake news and he retweeted a comment that included the hash tag firefauci. It included a reference to a press conference where the doctor claimed the u. S. Overall was at low risk, even though he said in the same press conference that the situation was changing. Now looking ahead to reopening the country, dr. Fauci said this wont be a one size fits all. Its not like just flipping a switch. He hopes that at the end of the month the white house can assess different parts of the country and look to see if there are areas where they can start to work with local leaders to reopen the economy. And as for those much anticipated stimulus checks, over the weekend, the irs says it has begun sending those to eligible americans who already have direct deposit set up with the government. Gayle . A lot of news there. Thank you very much, paula. In addition to the Economic Uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, a big part of the decision on when to reduce mitigation efforts has to do with knowing who is immune in the first place. Our dr. David agus joins us from los angeles with new information on that. Good morning to you david. Weve been hearing a lot about this Antibody Test. Its been getting a lot of news lately. So, first, tell us what kind of test is it, and what exactly will it show . So this is a blood test that shows if you have had in the past tense coronavirus. So about 50 of people, up to 50 who have coronavirus dont even know they have it. They have no symptoms. Its critical we get an accurate number of the people in the country who have actually been exposed to the virus and it will tell us if theyre immune, if they cant get it again and if they cant spread it to others. So if you have the antibodies, how long are you immune . Thats the milliondollar question. We dont know. This virus has only been studied since middecember. So we dont know whether its going to be a year, two years or five years. My gut is if you have enough antibodies in the test, you have at least a year of immunity. After that were just going to learn as we go. David, this virus does seem to be a moving target. I heard somebody give the analogy, its like learning to fly the plane while youre flying the plane. Is that a good analogy to describe what were dealing with here . Its an apt analogy for sure. Every virus when it comes as evolved and its a new entity. We dont know how it behaves. We dont know how to treat it or prevent it. We dont even know how infectious it is. Were learning that its more infectious than we thought. So were in a new area now that, you know, every time we see a patient, were learning something about the virus. My hope and prayers are were sharing all the data so we can all learn together. So the thing about the Antibody Test if you get it, you want to test positive because it shows youve had it. And if once it shows youve had it, what good what can we do with that information . How will this help lessen things up about when we can go back outside again . Its a critical test. Its a test where there are now many available, but most of them across the country that are available are not very good. So its critical that dont get one yet. The new ones that should work well, were told, will be out later this week. But it says whether you can no longer get the virus and you cant spread the virus. So this is going to be a certificate of immunity if you will, where you can go back to work without worrying. You can be exposed to somebody with the virus and not worry about catching it. You can care with somebody about the virus and not catch it yourself. Thats critically important when we do policy in the United States. Yeah, and this also sounds like a test everybody should get since you can have the virus and not have the symptoms, correct . Its not should get. Will get. We have to test the whole country in order to open the country. You have to know your status so you can know how to behave and you can know your own risk factors before we open up the country. All right. Thank you very much, dr. David agus. Thanks. Thanks, david. Tens of millions of americans celebrated easter, in spite of stayathome orders and directives. Some of them had to wait in long lines at food banks. Others went to church. Parishioners packed this church in orlando, and many of them had no masks. In kentucky, state troopers recorded license plate numbers of churchgoers who defied orders to stay home. The governor said they must now quarantine for 14 days. And for the first time, pope francis celebrated easter mass inside an empty st. Peters basilica. Usually around 80,000 people gather to hear his message.
