Announcer its a late show with Stephen Colbert tonight, acting out and about. Plus, tonight, stephen welcomes Anderson Cooper and musical guest mark foster, featuring jon batiste and stay homin. And now live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen you ready to do it . Come on welcome to the late show. Im your host Stephen Colbert. It was a beautiful weekend. Warm weather and sunny across the country. What a disaster. Weve all been staying inside for over seven weeks, and we know we should stay inside, but the beautiful weather was just too tempting. It led to huge nonsocially distanced crowds in new york city parks. I understand, new yorkers. Its so nice out you want to head to the park to watch a squirrel eat a cigarette butt like a corn cob. Its not just new york. Down in atlanta, crowds gathered to buy the new Michael Jordan shoes. This latest style is called airborne jordans. While Public Health officials are worried, one person wasnt too concerned donald trump. He had a fox news virtual town hall last night and he said it was time to hit the beach i really believe you can go to parks, you can go to beaches, you keep it you keep the spread, you stay away a certain amount and i really think the public has been incredible with what thats one of the reasons were successful. Thats one of the if you call losing 80 or 90,000 people successful. Stephen nobody does. I seriously doubt youll ever hear, trump did a great job. He really just lost one and a half vietnams. Besides, as bret baier pointed out, thats not even the right number. That number has changed, mr. President. Its gone up. I used to say 65,000. Now im saying 80 or 90 and it goes up and it goes up rapidly. Stephen as trump i dont get it. No matter how many times i tell states to reopen and people to party on the beach, the number keeps going up. If this doesnt stop soon, im going to have dr. Fauci throw a Public Health kegger. No surprise, trump is lying. Hes willfully endangering the lives of americans and we know this because the New York Times acquired an internal government memo showing Trump Administration models predict a near doubling of the daily death toll by june, proving that reopening the economy will put the nation right back to where it was in midmarch. Midmarch infection rates will skyrocket, everyone will have to go back inside, and americas going to have to find a new animalexploitation, truecrime drama to watch. Thats why im releasing my new show, walrus duke. Trump thinks that getting the economy moving is the only way he can get reelected, so hes going to try to do it, no matter what the risk is to americans. I havent seen a campaign William Henry harrisons tippecanoe and a scorpion down your pants. You may have noticed that trumps virtual town hall was held at the Lincoln Memorial. The choice of venue sparked some criticism, which the hosts asked trump about. What do you say to people who say this is not right venue for this . Do you know i didnt know it was creating criticism, and i did say this would be nice, but i thought it was your choice, not ours. Stephen as trump i had nothing to do with us being here. And while were on it, why didnt you do more about coronavirus testing, bret baier . And i cant believe you told people to drink bleach and you cheated on your wife with a porn star. Youre a sicko. Its a pleasure to be here. Social distancing guidelines already made the setup look kind of weird, and it didnt help that trump and the hosts sat on the chairs from regis and kathie lee. Anyone who has ever sat in one of those tall chairs knows you cant get up into it without scooching. Fox news, i demand you release the unedited scooch footage what was the president s strategy . One ass cheek and then wiggle back and forth . One big hop and slide that sorta moves the whole chair back . Was he lowered by block and tackle . The American People deserve to know the town hall was supposed to be about reopening the country, and was titled, america together returning to work. And would happen, he actually thought this disaster might actually make things better. Youre going to have your job. Youre going to get another job or youre going to get a better job. Youll get a job where you make more money frankly, and i think thats going to happen. Stephen really . A better job with more money. So its good the virus happened . as trump i think its going to be even better because the pigs that just flew out of my butt told me theyre hiring. Its not just the unemployed, everyones going to be better off i think next years going to be a phenomenal economic year. I think that the following year has a chance to be one of our best years. We have a transition third quarter. Were going to have a very good Fourth Quarter and a great next year. I agree with the president , i think well have one of the best years in the history of our economy. Stephen mike pence, where do you find the courage . I assume somewhere around trumps butt, because thats where your head is. Right in the old bravery crack. Trumps been trying to blame china for how he ignored the threat of the virus for months in the United States, and sked howe plans lie are you considering new tariffs on china as a sort of a punishment for their handling of the virus . Well, its the ultimate punishment, i will tell you that. I dont like again, i dont like to tell you what im because, again, we are all playing a complicated game of chess or poker. Name, whatever you want to name. But it is not checkers, that i can tell you. Stephen as trump its not checkers, okay . Its called chess or poker. Heres how it works each player gets five cards, and two bishops, and a rook. Do anything you want as long as its not checkers. The goal of the game is. I dont know. Im really more of a checkers guy. I keep screaming somebody king me and nobody will. Trump cant say he wasnt warned. We just found out that trump received Intelligence Briefings on coronavirus twice in january. But trump had an explanation on january 23, i was told that there could be a virus coming in, but it was of no real import. In other words, it wasnt oh, weve got to do something weve got to do something. Stephen yes, president ial Intelligence Briefings are known for being loaded with stuff thats just for funsies thats why the briefings are always stamped for anyones eyes of no real import. When trump was asked about his combative stance towards the press, he gave this surprising assessment. Look, i am greeted with a hostile press the likes of which no president has ever seen. The closest will be that gentleman right up there. They said lincoln nobody got treated worse than lincoln. I believe i am treated worse. Stephen youre comparing yourself to lincoln . Id like to point out that none of his supporters carried confederate flags. Then trump explained how tough the coronavirus is on people with preexisting conditions. If you have any problem, heart, diabetes, even a little weak heart, a little diabetes this thing is vicious. Stephen little diabetes, by the way, was trumps rap name. But trump did propose a solution to this Global Pandemic the biggest thing we can do to solve every problem is get rid of the plague. I call it the plague. If we get rid of the plague, all the problems go away very quickly. Stephen wait, let me write that down. To solve virus, get rid of virus. What a genius. It reminds me of einsteins e equals e. As part of his blame china initiative, trumps been pushing unsubstantiated claims that the disease started in a laboratory in wuhan. Yesterday, his Conspiracy Theory got the support of secretary of state mike pompeo, seen here doing his de niro. Sown on th this week on sunday and told host Martha Raddatz that he believes trump. Mr. Secretary, have you seen anything that gives you high confidence that it originated in that wuhan lab . Martha, theres enormous evidence that thats where this began. Stephen as pompeo in fact, i saw the enormous evidence this morning, and it said as trump mike, i need you to go lie to Martha Raddatz like youve never lied before. Okay, if theres enormous evidence that the coronavirus escaped from a chinese lab secretary, lets hear it crickets loud and clear. Part of the Conspiracy Theory is that the virus not only escaped the lab, but was actually created there. Raddatz asked pompeo about this, and his answer was. What was the answer . Do you believe it was manmade or genetically modified . Look, the best experts so far seem to think it was manmade. I have no reason to disbelieve that at this point. Your office of the d. N. I. Says the consensus, the Scientific Consensus was not manmade or genetically modified. Thats right. I i i agree with that. I have no reason to doubt that that is accurate. Stephen so, he has no reason disbelieve its manmade, but he also has no reason to doubt its not manmade. An answer that bizarrely contradictory can only have been spliced together in a lab in wuhan. Though, to be fair, pompeo did provide evidence that two things can be true at the same time. For instance, that footage made pompeo look like both a liar and an idiot. This Global Pandemic is depression, but there is some happier news from the smile file, because murder hornets have arrived in the u. S. the asian giant hornet hails from japan, where the hornets kill as many as 50 people a year. To put that into perspective sharks killed two people in 2019. Explains why this summers blockbuster is buzz. One beekeeper who was stung by a murder hornet said it was like having redhot thumbtacks driven into my flesh. I know that hurts. I once had a summer internship as a cork board. These things are terrifying. According to one expert, theyre like something out of a monster cartoon with this huge yelloworange face. And im being told weve got a picture of their queen. Weve got a show for you tonight. Ill be talking to Anderson Cooper. Stick around. Olays retinol24 faced the competition and we broke through. Stephen is this the real recipe . Jon its the abridged version. It will get you started and then, after that, you can figure out your own ways to improvise it. Stephen you have to take it to your own level, but youre not giving away your mothers secrets. Jon no, its enough for you to get the taste but youve got to figure the secret sauce out yourself. Stephen the next time you see me, it will be a photo of me holding red beans and rice, all right . Jon lets go, lets go piano riff stephen he is an Emmy Awardwinning host on cnn, a correspondent for cbss 60 minutes, and now, a proud new father. Please welcome to a late show, Anderson Cooper anderson, ive got to say, your lighting is fantastic. Thanks for joining us from a rembrandt painting. Thanks for being here. Yes, im the boy with the gold earring. Stephen congratulations, dad yes. Stephen and thank you for giving all of us something joyful to see it was just wonderful. Like a lot of people, i watched the clip of you announcing the birth of your son wyatt morgan cooper. Right . Yep. Stephen thats a classy name, my fri theyrellily es. Wyatft my dad whodwhgan is my moms moms maiden name. What i didnt realize to me, someone pointed out to me ive actually picked two members of the urp family names. Stephen oh, wyatt urp quite a burden for him. laughter like a lot of people, i watched it and i was deeply moved. I thought it was very beautiful. My favorite thing is i came to my wife evie and i said, here, watch this. I held it up and i watched her watch it, and it was just she was so moved, and i just i knew when the tears were going to be coming. I knew when the tears but thank you for the tears of joy. Hows it been the first few weeks of being a dad . Yeah, this is one week. Hes born last monday. Stephen really . Yeah, 6 03. Its astonishing. I just stare at him and hold him and i just cant believe, a, that hes going to depend on me and that he belongs you know, that hes here, and its just astonishing. I just never dreamed i mean, ive always dreamed about it but never thought i would actually be able to do it. Its been incredible. Stephen its abamazing thing. Its hard to explain to people who dont have children what that First Experience was when you see your child for the first time. Its like tectonic plates shifting except it doesnt leave you in rubble. Its a good tectonic shift. Stephen my first reaction when i saw my daughter for the first time was, oh, i have been stupid. Yes, what if i been wasting time doing . What am i doing with all this . Stephen i thought i knew what love was. Yeah, yeah. Stephen and, also, like, i hve been a bad son. Really . You thought that . Stephen a little bit. Because i thought if my mother loves me at any fraction of the am that i love this child, instantly, i havent loved her back enough. I dont believe that for a second. I do not believe that for a second. Stephen well, thats good old catholic guilt, i guess. Yeah. Well, i know i was a good son because ive actually been reading my moms, like, journals and stuff because i have been going through all her stuff. Suddenly i discover all this stuff she thought about me and it was all pretty nice stuff. I did all right. Not bad. Stephen now, your good friend andy cohen had a child just last year. Yeah. Stephen are you guys connecting . You getting advice . Yes. He obviously knew about it well in advance and hes been encouraging me all along. I figured if he can do it, that sort of gave me the final pus, a kid, then and benjamin is incredible. Hes actually really helped me because my son is entirely wearing handmanydowns from andy cohens son. Stephen okay. A, im inherently cheap, i like a good value, and if i was going to get close to the kid first of all, it was a pandemic. I was planning on kind of going shopping which i hate to do. And then online shopping, how do you do that for baby clothes . Do you go to, like, byebye baby or amazon and it just seemed weird. So, yeah, he just gave me all the clothes. Stephen has he given you any advice . I wanted my son to be a depressionera child who grows up wearing handmedown clothes, and stephen well, god, i hope he doesnt get an opportunity t. Stephen are you getting any sleep . On behalf of new parents everywhere, if you are, you go to hell. laughter yeah, its been a shift. I actually discovered coffee. So this is my i only allow myself two a day. Stephen what do you mean you just discovered coffee . Youre 52 years old. Yeah, i cant believe ive gone this long without coffee. I figured theres soda, so if theres soda, why not coffee . I tried once or tries on tv a cup of coffee and i dont see the point. Now i totally get it. I cant believe and now i think im addicted because it, like, snaps your mind into focus. Stephen mmhmm. And i wake up thinking i mean, i think of my son first, but caffeine is a close second. Stephen wow. Well, congratulations. Yeah, well stephen for joining the team. The winning side. Im not sure its good. Stephen no, youre a coffee achiever now. Whats strange is im one of the few people continuing to work at our offices at cnn. I ride my bike everywhere and i go in and there are, like, security guards on the front but really no one else there. My entire staff is a home an ist hornet sll ces in. Little ca robotic camera and a trash studio now that im in the office. I discovered, because i never made coffee before, is i i just started drinking it, i taught miferl how to make a nice coffee. Its a revelation. The machines, you just put the pact in, and i tried for the longest time to rip it out. You dont have to. You put it in the machine and somehow the machine does what i could not do. Stephen you could have killed yourself you cant left alone, Anderson Cooper you and i have talked about loss before. Youre no stranger to tragedy. Were now going through a global tragedy. Yeah. Stephen what does it mean to you to have this Beautiful Life introduced in to your world right now . What does wyatt mean to you in the context of that . Yeah, i have been thinking so much about it. My mom died in june, so it hasnt even been a full year. In the course of one year, just on a personalisto, you know, experience the loss of her life and to have been there with her when she breathed her last breath and to witness that and to be holding her at that time, and then to suddenly, you know, last monday night, to be in a delivery room with this amazing surrogate and, you know, her husband and my former partner benjamin who is going to be a coparent to to to wyatt, even though were not together anymore, but, you know, hes my family and i want wyatts family as well. So to be there and to see a new human being come into existence, which ive never seen in person before, it was just extraordinary. And, i mean, i thought a lot about my mom and seeing her seeing the life leave her body, and seeing life come you know, seeing the living being coming out of this wonderful woman, its just extraordinary, a
