California has the highest number of fraud complaints related to covid19 and in the bay area, that means more fake apartment listings. Theyll try to steal not just your money but your identity. Its really hard actually to decipher betl ea wh fake. Rter n aj b found this three bedroom, three bathroom apartment listed for 1925 a month in san jose, he thought it was too good to be true and quickly found out he was right. Ive actually been running in to quite a few different scams. So far this year, the ftc has received 18,235 reports of scams related to covid19, and collectively americans have lost 13. 4 million to this type of fraud, including fake apartment listings where scammers use social distancing as a convenient excuse. Aj showed us the series of emails from a suspected scammer named adam. Off the bat, he tells aj due to social distancing, he cannot see the unit in person. He then gets right to the hard sell, pushing aj to reserve the place before someone else does because other people are showing interest. The most interesting part about it is the price that he had o the property was probably 50 of the market rate. So its really obvious something was going on. Aj asked is this a scam . Adam was ready with another excuse, this time blaming the federal government. Saying the property was initially listed at a higher price but all homeowners had been asked to lower their rents during the pandemic which simply isnt true. If a listing sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Reporter captain with sunnyvale says its a big red flag. He wants consumers to know social distancing is not an excuse. We decided to let them give us a runaround. This two bedroom, two bathroom is listed on craigslist for an unti a mon when we inquired about the place, the lister told us hed moved to spain and was now renting through airbnb. He started asking us for personal information like our license photo. Next he told us, dear blank, unfortunately its not possible to see it prior to booking in payment. This is airbnb policy. Which isnt true. Im just trying to figure out if the postings im looking at are real or not. Reporter we tracked down a legitimate listing, via apartments, which represents this apartment and others for upwards of 3800 a month. After that the craigslist posting disappeared. Its awful. Its awful. The pandemic is hard enough itself. Reporter as for aj, hes still searching for a place and struggling to trust online listings. Luckily he backed out before things went too far. He knows other renters are still getting duped right now. The best way to protect yourself against these scams is to be educated about them. If youre somebody looking for a place, have a skeptical eye. They also tell us usually the people who are running these scams dont live in the United States and thats partially why theyre so difficult to catch. Thats right. Theyre so difficult. Its all online. They can disappear like that. What does enforcement even look like . How do you get these people, these scammers that are duping these folks . Its tough, and as you know, the fbi willestigate b thsu sething goingon f years fot to take place. If youre looking at what happened with aj, he didnt lose any money and that posting was taken down. That scammer might be an example of somebody who can easily get away. Number one rule of it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Keep sending your stories and your ideas to project home and see all of susies reporting on our website. A twitter employee is on life support tonight.
