Warmer, the heat wave is prompting the bay area quality district to issue a spare the air alert for tomorrow. Meteorologist darren peck is in the Weather Center and shows us we could be hitting the triple digits this weekend. Thats going to be the highlight of the heat wave. First lets talk about where we are now. These are the current numbers. Were pretty much right on the mark for daytime highs. 91 for inland. Contra costa county, 90. These numbers are close to 10 degrees above where we were yesterday. Today is the day you notice the warmup. Tomorrow is the day you notice the heat wave. Were in the low 90s for inland locations. Look at tomorrow, monday, memorial day. 99. Thats going to bring us right to the verge of 100 degrees for many locations that are inland but tuesday and wednesday are the peak of the heat wave. Its not going to get a lot hotter than monday but technically those two days will be hotter and those two days we will see triple digit numbers so the heat advisory is now in place for everywhere on this map in orange. Notice how the peninsula and immediate bay are left off. Look at the cities highlighted in the orange zone in contra costa and alameda county. These are the places we need to be aware. Its going to be tough to beat the heat unless youve got air conditioning. This includes the north bay as well. Even though it will be cooler at the coast, were facing some significant limitations in our ability to get there. Thats the headline. Ill be back with more on this coming up in a few minutes. Well take a look at when it ends. Lets go live to joe vazquez. Hes out there with the crowds at Golden Gate Park to give us a sense of whats going on there. Hi, joe. The weather is glorious here. Were in Golden Gate Park. Theyve closed off some of the streets to vehicles. Were watching a lot of bicycling going on around us. Many families out right now. Many of them doing a pretty good job of maintaining social distance. Let me show you video on the lawns, on the green spaces. Not as much social distancing. People are out here picnicking and taking up the green space as much as they can. You can see how theyre working hard to maintain that space. Doing their darnedest to stay away from other groups. This is the challenge of the day. Its a similar scene at baker beach. No doubt about it, there are a lot of people at the beach today. Nowhere near the crowds wed normally see on memorial day weekend. Yet, there are a lot of people getting in that water. Tanning, nowhere near the emptiness weve seen in the last few months. Lets check over at delores park. When we went by a short while ago, its crowded. Its very crowded. People are trying to stay inside those social distancing circles. Others, not trying as hard. Not always succeeding. The overwhelming majority of people we saw wearing masks, trying to keep that space, trying to enjoy themselves while not putting themselves in harms way. But suffice to say that it is a very difficult challenge on a day like today to get out and want to be outside and to want to be in your Favorite Places in the parks and yet keep away from others. Thats going to be the challenge from here out. As we heard, its only going to get warmer in the next few days. Thank you, joe. A lot of people getting outdoors to enjoy the sunshine in the east bay as well. The parking lots were packed at a lot of the parks while hikers hit the trails. Heres what it looked in the berkeley hills. Trails there are open as long as people practice social distancing. The hikers we talked to said everybody or most everybody seemed to be following the rules. Joggers and walkers seem to have their masks ready to go. If you stay on the path, its more than six feet apart. I notice most people temporarily cover. In alameda, the parking lot is closed in an attempt to keep crowds away. Didnt work. Visitors filled up the spots on the nearby streets. In San Francisco now, investigators are trying to figure out what or who caused a massive fire on fishermans wharf. The fire erupted yesterday morning before dawn. It completely decimated a large warehouse used to supply fishing supplies. 150 firefighters were called to the scene. One of them is hurt but is okay. Witnesses say the fire quickly spread on the back end of pier 45 engulfing the warehouse with thick black smoke that could be seen across the bay. Luckily two fire boats helped save the ss jeremiah obrian, a world war ii warship thats docked next to the warehouse where the fire started. When we show you the morning lows map, its usually shaded blue. And the colors correspond to how low the numbers are going. Theres a lot of green and even yellow in the central valley. The takeaway from the colors is yes, the daytime highs are the headline and how hot theyre going to get. Lets not forget the fact that the morning lows are not allowing us to cool down as much as we normally do. And thats a factor when we talk about heat advisories and the risk for heat illness. Its not getting that prolonged cooldown into the low 50s in the overnight hours, it helps. Morning lows will be staying in the low to mid 60s for many places. That covers the morning lows. Here are tomorrows daytime highs. Mid 90s. 93 in sunnyvale. 95 in san jose. Well see 91 in fremont. The numbers inland have us topping out at 99. 95 in pleasanton. San francisco goes to 77 tomorrow.
