Reporter well, allen, take a look across the street from me right now, we are at 17th and valencia. We have a crowd on their knees chanting hands up, dont shoot in front of the Mission Substation here at 17th and valencia. We are not surprised to see a crowd this large. This was organized by students at Mission High School. It is a school known for civic activism and civic pride. And those students have taken to the streets here in front of the Mission Substation this afternoon. This is a neighborhood that is not, that is quite used to seeing some form of police violence. We are talking about a man who was shot, jamaica hampton back in december, just a few blocks away on cap street from where im standing now. There was alex nieto a few years ago in vernal heights. Mario woods in the bay view district. This group is fired up. We have seen a little tagging. But this crowd has been just chanting for hours at this point, absolutely filling the street from sidewalk to sidewalk. We do have some video we want to show you from a little while ago, of some San Francisco Police Officers taking a knee with protesters. We have seen this happen a few times now at this point here at the protest in front of the Mission Police substation. When officers do kneel, the crowd roars and applauds and cheers. This crowd has coinued to stay out here as the hours have drug on. The shade probably helping at this point, it is not quite so hot here in San Franciscos mission district. But, they are live here, continuing to chant. Continuing to be loud here in front of the Mission Substation at 17th and valencia. About a half mile from where they started at Mission High School. Kpix5s joe vasquez is live on the ground as protesters make their way to hall of justice. Joe, what are you seeing . Reporter liz, im at the hall of justice. You can see a really large crowd. Lets see if i can turn this camera around. A large crowd. You can see a sign that says solidarity from the bay. Thousands of people are gathered here. The hall of justice. This is the former Police Headquarters. They moved the actually Police Headquarters a few years ago. There are courtrooms here. This is the center of the Justice System for San Francisco. There are people as far as i can see here. Many of them up on precipices. Right here, i will see if i can make my way in, guards are barricading themselves in. Setting themselves up in front of the entrance. We are not seeing any yelling at them. A lot of young people. Thats dancing to the music playing right now. I asked folks in the crowd the key question of the day. And that is now that three other officers have been arrested and a primary officers charge has been upped, it does make a difference. That is something they were frustrated about. That news is welcome. But, they say theres a lot to be done about repairing Race Relations in america and a lot of these young people seem determined to make that happen. All right joe, thanks. Otok at chopper 5. Our kenny choi has been out at the march since people started gathering. At first, they were at Mission High School. Lets check in with kenny now. Whats happening where you are . Reporter we are not too far from where joe was reporting just a short time ago. We know that this group has been very organized from the start. Six days ago, they posted on social media. No justice, no peace. San francisco, that they would crowd would be massive. Estimated at 10,000 or so. They had a following of more than 9,000 when this protest started. You can see behind me, it is a very energetic crowd here tonight. It has been very peaceful. They have said, the organizers have said they want it to be peaceful but they want their message to bew loudearlie r in broadcast, some San Francisco Police Department officers taking a knee near their Police Department substation in the mission district. However, when i talk to the organizers, they say that taking a knee is not enough. They say that they want, they are demanding reform in the Justice Department as well as the policing. So, they want their voices to be heard tonight. Again, you can see this crowd behind me. So many signs are up here today. Stop the killing of black lives. We have a crowd that has been here pretty much the whole day making their way to 850 bryant street. They posted that as well on their instagram page. We have been following this crowd all afternoon. It started around 4 00. Sat Mission Dolores park. And you see, this is essentially the front of the crowd. You see this Truck Driving right through. This crowd is there making a move toward their next destination. We have the sign saying we cawh e. Eat witnessed. A of oteste movement that was led by students. Thats the very latest here in San Francisco between 6th and 7th street and bryant. Kenny choi, kpix5. All right kenny, thank you. The National Guard on standby in vallejo after two nights of chaos and violence. And tonight, police are revealing more about the confrontation with lotters that left a man dead. Kpix5s Wilson Walker is live with the chiefs explanation for an officer opening fire. Reporter we are at city hall where there is a perfectly peaceful demonstration the last two hours. It was in the name of angel ramos. A man who died in confrontation with police here in a city with a long history of that. The last two nights here on the heels of the peaceful protest has come a lot of trouble and today, we learned more about what happened in the Early Morning hours tuesday, we heard from the chief of police talking about a situation where Police Arrived at a walgreens with reports of looting. A number of people seemed to be leaving the scene. One officer saw an individual approaching what appeared to be one of those cars. That individual dropped down to their knees. The officer saw something, what we are told in his mind was a handgun. Thats when the shooting began. Thats how the chief describes the incident and what has been learned since then. Due to this perceived threat, one officer fired his weapon five fulltimes from within the police vehicle, striking the suspect once. Investigations revealed the weapon was a long 15inch hammer tucked into the pocket of the sweatshirt. Reporter now the other half of this conversation in vallejo is what has happened in the hours after sunset. There has been a number of incidents of looting. There have been a number of confrontations around the Police Headquarters and city hall. That is when the National Guard was called out. The very Early Morning hours today. They were briefly on the streets and have since disappeared. What happens tonight, we dont know. I dont think anyone here knows. What is going on, a perfectly peaceful protest. More resources are on hand if they see what they have seen over the past two nights. We are live in vallejo. Wilson walker, kpix5. Up next, our first taste of fire season tonight. Indeed, the fire that ripped through a line of homes just a short time ago in solano county. And that is the portion of the region that has some of the lowest relative humidity values. Right now, just 17 . Not much moisture in the atmosphere, the heat will back off at least. We will look at that in the forecast. A more than 12hour standoff involving children has finally ended moments ago in the east bay. And, another live look at the huge protest underway right now in San Francisco. Massive group has been on the move. They have arrivee at chopper 5. We will keep an eye on that on the air and on the a developing story, chopper 5 over a large brush fire in sisoon city. Fireng keg streetmes en destro now according to the daily republic. This was a four alarm fire. We havent gotten the total number of acres burned here. There was an Evacuation Center set up for a while. And the smoke from that fire, you can see that miles away. No word upon what caused it. Fire crews asking people to avoid the area. Chief meteorologist paul heggen joins us now. Looking outside right now, it is a fine evening in the city. Looking from sutro tower. Things have backed down. 93 at concord, 92 livermore. A lot of locations reacheth90s the wind will have a lot to say about tomorrows temperatures. The wind will be on shore and it will be quite a bit stronger kicking in early in the day. So we will freeze the maps here early afternoon. 10 to 15 miles an hour winds further inland of the it will not be Strong Enough to push the cooler air inland. Temperatures will reach into the 90s but it will have an impact on temperatures near the coast and around the bay. About 10 degrees cooler than we were today. The winds becoming quite gusty as we head into tomorrow evening. Lets track temperatures hour by hour. We start off in the 50s and low 60s early thursday morning which is above average for early june. And inland spots will warm up quickly. By lunchtime, temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s to around 90 degrees inland. But notice temperatures around the bay. Low to mid 70s. 10 degrees cooler than we were at noon today. And only low 60s along the coast. High temperatures will still be above normal across the board, well into the 90s for the triv low 90s for the north bay and south bay. Its the beginning of our temperatures backing off a little bit. A trend that will continue to be much more noticeable as we head toward the end of the workweek on friday. With the wind stirring around, its good news for good air quality. East bay still maybe a little bit nasty for folks with sensitive breathing issues but the wind will pick up and disperse more pollen on friday. This is allens favorite part of the forecast. What will make me sniffle. Its grass pollen and juniper pollen. If you guessed that, you get an expired package of costco nasal spray. New charges filed in the death of george floyd in minneapolis. Theres a live look at the streets of the city right now which has been rocked by protest. Some of them violent since the unarmed man died more than a week ago at the hands of police. Earlier today, protesters cheered upon hearing the news that former Police Officer Derek Chauvin is now facing Second Degree murder charges. The three officers with him as he held his knee on floyds neck for nine minutes have also been charged with aiding and abetting. I strongly believe that these developments are in the interest of justice for mr. Floyd, his family, community, and our state. Today, the mayor of washington dc announced he will push back the citys curfew. It takes effect about an hour from now. This as demonstrations continue for a sixth day. Militarized police and the National Guard have poured into the capital the past few days. The mayor of dc is criticizing it. But to prest p defended his law and order posture in an interview with fox news radio. Maybe it doesnt sound good to say it but you have to have a dominant force. We need law and order. To insinuate and bring the military into an American City is unconscionable. And an hours long stand off in oakland with police and a man with a rifle is over. This unfolded this morning near 57th and harmon. A man was barricaded inside a home with two Young Children inside. And, in just the past hour, the suspect agreed to let the children go and surrender to police. No injuries were reported. Allen . All right liz, thanks. Up up next, a magnitude 5. 5 earthquake just rattled southern california. The shaking was felt in multiple counties. Plus, the nba season looks like it will happen afterall. But without the golden state warriors. Some of whom were out protesting today. And, we will go back out live and check in on the protests in San Francisco. Well have another live report from the scene coming up a little we are following breaking news out of southern california. A magnitude 5. 5 earthquake has struck in San Bernardino county near the city of ridge crest 120 miles northeast of los angeles. Shaking has been reported throughout the area as far away as hollywood. So far, no reports of any damage or injuries. Meanwhile, several rallies were held across the bay area to protest Police Brutality and the killing of george floyd in minneapolis. Chopper 5 was over hundreds of protesters who gathered in east palo alto, hayward, and san ramon. They chanted and held signs that said black lives matter. The demonstrators made their way down to city hall. They blocked the road as they marched down. The warriors will not be part of the nbas plan to finish the season next month in orlando. 22 teams will report to orlandos disney world next month. 13 from the west, 9 from the east. They will play eight regular season games and then go into the 16team playoffs. The owners are expected to approve that plan tomorrow. Meantime, steph curry and Klay Thompson joined their teammate at a peaceful protest at lake merritt. This is a step in the right direction. We dont have a Million People have a crowd. We just heard from some of the organizers of this peaceful protest so far. They are on top of that bus right there. To my left, and just beyond that is a truck that will make its way back to the mission district. I am told this truck has been parked here for quite some time. You see to the left of that, all the protesters right in front of the hall of justice. This truck is making its way out. It is about 30 minutes before the curfew. I talked to some of the organizers before the protest started. They said they are aware of the curfew. They will not tell anyone or direct anyone ifthey choose to stay. We also heard from one of the main protest organizers of this event today who said we are living in a police state. So it seems like they have no intention of leaving the streets of San Francisco when the curfew starts at 8 00. For the most part, this group is a very young, raucous, and energetic crowd. They have maintained their message is to be peaceful and they want their voices to be loud. This is the ninth day of protests across the country. The latest one in the city of San Francisco starting at Mission High School this afternoon at 4 00. Most of that crowd slowly advanced here to soma in the San Francisco hall of justice. And that is where we are right now. About 30 minutes to go before the curfew takes effect in the city of San Francisco. I could hear choppers above and the protesters here once again. This is a very well organized group. On social media, they set up their page just about seven days ago and made the announcement that they would have this protest here today.
