Eveng, ien bastida. Abco the manhunt just ending this evening after a shooting spree that terrorized the town of paso robles. The Police Closed in on the suspect, 26yearold mason lira, this afternoon. They opened fire on several off officers that arrived at the scene, but it all came to an end when the suspect tried to run from a river bed to highway 101. He was shot and killed by police. The 3 officers injured are hospitalized with nonlifethreatening injuries. Heres what we know about the suspect. Authorities say hes a homeless man from the monterey area. He was caught on Security Camera footage yesterday. Hours earlier say lira started shooting at the Paso Robles Police station. As officers started responding, lira turned his gun on the police cars rolling in, shooting a deputy in the head. The shooting triggered an intense manhunt. Its not a good feeling to have. The Law Enforcement around here is really good, so the fact they cant get him is frightening and very concerning. Its unreal hes brought it to this town. Hes not even from here and its not what were about as a community. Reporter in addition to shooting the suspect, lira is also suspected of killing a homeless man near the amtrak station in paso robles. His father told reporters he has a Mental Illness but refuses to take medication. Meanwhile, the officer remains hospitalized after surgery. His prognosis looks very good. If you were expecting push back from the San Franciscos Police Officers association, they called it reasonable. With a wave of protests across the country pushing for Police Reform and systemic change, mayor london breed announced a 4 point action plan for the city and sfpd. On a call with chief william scott, van jones, and the board of equalization chair. These are ideas that are not new, but i believe at this point in time theres an appetite. Reporter they include demilitarizing the police of military grade weapons, limiting sfpd response to nonviolent situations, addressing police bias, redirecting funds to disenfranchised communities. I think her approach was reasonable regarding the reforms she mentioned today. Reporter thats sf Police OfficersAssociation President tony montoya who does worry about tools like tear gas being taken away from specialized tactical officers. They didnt use it in the recent protests. Its really only used during like severe emergency type situations. So none of that was deployed during any of this thats been going on the past 2 weeks. Before we just start taking equipment away, lets understand what we have and be thoughtful about it. Reporter but he does support directing officers away from nonviolent calls regarding the homeless or Mental Health crises. Its also supported by chris herring on the coalition for the homeless who says sfpd answers 8,000 calls on the homeless a month, with only 30 minutes of training in the academy. Rather than having the police respond, there would hopefully be a system where wed have Public Health outreach workers respond and offer some sort of meaningful services or placement. Reporter now these are goals to begin with. There still needs to be funding, allegations taken care of and managed to perhaps take some of the money from the police depa re cial work. If those social w answering the calls from homeless and mentally ill individuals. We dont know exactly what that looks like yet. Its not been revealed. We expect to get a better picture when the budget is finally released. Live in San Francisco, andria borba, kpix 5. Oakland police say chp officers opened fire when salgado started ramming patrol cars. Several investigations are underway. Lets get back to the breaking news. The San Luis ObispoSheriffs Office is giving an update on the manhunt that ended with a suspect being killed. Lets listen in. He fled from them into a nearby apartment complex. Officers surrounded the complex in the area with the resources they had at the time. And unfortunately lira escaped through the river bed a short time later. The suspect was again encountered at ramada and 46. Lira, the suspect, was spotted and fired several shots at officers that responded, and once again retreated back into the river bed. Overnight Law Enforcement officers were summoned. We used the assistance of the fbi and swat team to assist along with many other agencies to contain the area of the river bed. If youre familiar with the river bed, its very large and very long. We believe that we had the suspect contained in that area, however it was a very large area. This morning we made plans to begin our search of the river bed, so we summoned assistance, we received assistance from the kern county Sheriffs Office, the fbi again, the regional swat team, and kings county sheriffs to name a few. Our plan was pretty straight forward yet complex in the sense that we knew we had to search a very large area with a very dangerous person that was already wanted for suspicion of a murder of a resident and also the shooting of the and there was the San Luis Obispo county Sheriffs Office doing a press conference on that manhunt that ended in the suspects death. This was a case that spanned over a couple of days and completely terrorized the community of paso robles. Its a wine country kind of community in San Luis Obispo county. The Sheriffs Office just details the manhunt that was underway for 2 days where the suspect was hiding in a river bed and bringing in swat teams, the fbi, the sheriffs departments of multiple counties to try and get this suspect. Again, today, it did shooout wi suspect is dead. And check this out. Its hard to watch. A San Francisco sheriffs deputy using a baton to shove a protester in the back.
