Very slowly. So stay vigilant, america. Antifa fake teeth, fake hips, real danger. Ive fallen, and ill kill you all its a late show with Stephen Colbert. Tonight give peace some chants plus, stephen welcomes Emmanuel Acho and Chris Wallace. Featuring jon batiste and stay homin. And now, live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen its going to be great. Its going to be three weeks of just you and me and no kids. laughter ready . Im ready on right now. Welcome to a late show. Im your host, Stephen Colbert. All over america, millions of people are still marching to protest the murder of george floyd by Minneapolis Police and Police Brutality in black communities nationwide. Over the weekend, we saw massive turnouts in cities like los angeles, washington, d. C. , and philadelphia. That last one is particularly inspiring. Because usually when you see a crowd that big in philadelphia, theyre throwing batteries at the right fielder. Protests have also been a daily occurrence in new york city, and on saturday, one of the largest was led by a familiar covered up face. Welcome to certainly one of the more jubilant protests in new york city right now, a new orleansstyle second line led by jon batiste, best known of Stephen Colberts late show. Look at what were doing. Were using music to bring people together of all races, of all genders for black lives. We have to get protests, and we have to get to voting. 100 Million People did not vote in the last election. We are battling three candidates donald trump, joe biden, and apathy. And we have to fight apathy more than anything. And we have to fight for black lives. And right now, if we dont do that, nobody will. We are the ones. We are we are the chosen ones. We can change this. Stephen proud to know that man and as jon said, protesters represent a wide swath of america, across every race, creed, and lack of color. Thats right. Your eyes do not betray you. That is mitt romney marching with the protesters. Romney became the first republican senator to join protesters, marching through washington with a group of Christian Church leaders. And he was unequivocal about why he was there to end violence and brutality, and to make sure stephenguy fde thathat binders full of w and mitt, while alone among republican senators, is squarely in the american mainstream. Because it turns out, in a New Washington post poll, 74 of americans say they support the protests, including 53 of republicans. At this rate, i look forward to the new cable news morning show fox and my one black friend. And according to polls, two in three americans say the killing of floyd represents a broader problem within Law Enforcement. The third american couldnt be reached because she was busy calling the police on a black bird watcher. Now, another poll found that 53 of registered voters now say they support black lives matter, up from 42 a few weeks ago. So, just over half of American Voters believe black people hael go its a start. Now its time to put our money where our mouth is, just as soon as we take the slave owners off the money. In this moment of economic and social turmoil, america has a tremendous opportunity. But to do what . Well, yesterday, House Democrats unveiled their Police Reform bill that would crack down on use of Excessive Force and ban certain practices, like choke holds. I think banning things that sound like murder is probably pretty good policy. Now weve just got to outlaw stab and frisk. Some people want to go farther. One of the common signs held up at protests is defund the police, which is, coincidentally, the radio friendly title of that song by n. W. A. Defund the Police Coming straight from the underground stephen now, defunding the police might sound a little scary to some people. Like cbs. Theyd have to change their entire primetime lineup. Swat would have to become Community Health services. And ncis would stand for no cops instead, soup it would still have a lot of murders in it, but theres also a lot of bisques and chowders. Defunding the police doesnt necessarily mean no cops, as one Police Reform expert at Georgetown Law School points out. Defunding the police means shrinking the scope of Police Responsibilities and shifting most of what government does to keep us safe to entities that are better equipped to meet that need. It means investing more in mentalhealth care and housing, and expanding the use of Community Mediation and violenceinterruption programs. Because you see, right now, because those other services have been underfunded for years, all of that eventually falls to the police. And thats way too many things for them to be doing. Its like in the middle ages, it wasnt a good idea that your barber was also your dentist and your surgeon. And saying defund the barber doesnt mean no ones getting haircuts. Although, admittedly, right now, no ones getting haircuts. Now, this protest movement is really popular. But what has taken a hit in popularity are monuments to americas racist history, like confederate statues and donald trump. Trumps latest Approval Rating is just 38 , on par with jimmy carter at this point in his re election year. And we all remember how carter bounced back with an astounding victory against ronald reagan. Thats why the 80s were known for moderation and peanuts. These polls are a tough reality to face, and like all reality, trump is denying it. Over the weekend, trump called around to new york friends in the hopes that they would validate trumps beliefs that the polls were wrong, but no one is telling him what he wants to hear. Oh, thats so pathetic. as trump please tell me that the polls are wrong and ill get reelected. Sir, this is the butterball hotline. Oh, in that case, i left my face under the heat lamp too long. Should i start basting it . Hello . Oh, garlic knots the president is looking where to aim his blame, and hes considering white house Senior Adviser and flushable wipe that wished to be a real boy, jared kushner. Kushner is currently overseeing trumps reelection campaign, and according to an insider, the president is thinking of replacing his soninlaw. We know, sir. Weve all seen the pictures. If trumps looking for someone to blame, he should check out his reflection in the riot shields, because that new poll also says that 61 disapprove of his handling of the protests. Thats not fair. Hes handling them just as well as he handles a bible. Trump is desperate to turn this thing around, so desperate in fact, that the white house is considering a trump speech to the nation on race and unity. Yes, theyre considering it. A heroic contemplation of the possibility of leadership. It reminds me of dr. Kings immortal words im thinking about having a dream. What would that speech be like . Would he take a page from the democrats and wear an extralong kente cloth tie . Well, we may have gotten a little preview of trumps sensitive approach to police violence, because this morning,i an elderly protestor to the ground. The man involved, Martin Gugino, is in serious but stable condition. And we all hope for his speedy and complete recovery. But trump isnt buying the kind, fragile old man act, no, because he tweeted, the buffalo protester shoved by police could be an antifa provocateur. 75yearold Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan Police Communications in order to black out the equipment. I watched, he fell harder than was pushed. Was aiming scanner. 75ye m a set up . S raig. Antifascist, which you somehow consider suspicious. He was somehow able to fall harder than he was pushed, fake a fractured skull, and spontaneously bleed from his ears, all the while operating a secret scanning device in order to black out all Police Communication equipment. Man, those jitterbug phones are getting really sophisticated. as old man this big button is 911. And that one with the smiley face calls my grandson. And the red one down here with the hammer and sickle on it is start populist revolution. Later, okay . Trump has to demonize the man because he has to convince the old, white voters he needs not to get reelected, not to sympathize with gugino, which is a tall order, because, turns out, Martin Gugino is a pretty sympathetic character. Hes a longtime peace activist and a member of a Human Rights Organization called the western new york peace center, and a group who focuses on Affordable Housing called push buffalo. Well, given what just happened to their member, they may want to consider changing their name to dont push buffalo. Maybe most damning to these conspiracy theories is that gugino is also a member of a group called the catholic worker movement. Formed in the 1930s, the movement describes itself as committed to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, and the works of mercy as a way of life. as trump hey, what do you expect . Jesus was a radical lefty. Sh shoes, no property, distributs and i hear antifa. And at this point, even if trump gives a speech, its way too little, way too late. Because today in houston, friends and family gathered to remember george floyd, a man whose legacy will live on in the struggle for progress for equality. The service was relatively small, attended by those who were closest to floyd. Vice President Joe Biden declined to attend, not wanting to disrupt the service with his security detail, but he did appear in a pretaped address. And the Vice President had a compassionate message for George Floyds daughter gianna i know you have a lot of questions, honey. No child should have to ask questions that too many black children have had to ask for generations why . Why is daddy gone . Looking through your eyes we should also be asking ourselves why the answer is so often too cruel and too painful . Why in this nation do too many black americans wake up knowing they could lose their life in the course of just living their life. Why does justice not roll like a river or righteousness like a mighty stream . Why . Stephen you see, President Trump . It is possible to bring people to tears at Church Without having to release the pepper spray. And the Vice President did the one thing that the president fears the most biden didnt mention the name donald trump once. Lets hope very soon we can all do the same. Weve got a show for you tonight. Jon jon hello whats happening stephen that rally, that that protest, that march, that that expression this weekend. Tell me about it. It looked amazing. Jon man it was it was very special to see everybody come together and have people share in the fight, but also the celebration of black people, and in solidarity with people doing it all across the world. And, really, in celebration of the fact that were all human, and were all in this together. Stephen now, it was down in union square. How many people do you think were there . It looked like thousands and thousands. Jon well, i heard it was up to 5,000 people, maybe more. And we shut down sixth avenue s froml the people, and marched as we the e state building, there was just this incredible moment, where the rain started to come down, and a lot of the and negawa was with us, and she was doing the drum solo, and the rain was coming down, and it was hitting her drum. And we went into i want to dance with somebody. That was the song. And everybody was singing along for about three blocks. Stephen thousands of people . Jon thousands of people singing together. It was unbelievable. And and there was so much love. I dont even know how to articulate how much love i felt just being there. Stephen well, the footage was beautiful, and im proud to work with you. Jon oh, man, likewise. Its its really important what youre doing, and your voice is so important. And im im thrilled to work with you as well. Stephen keep it up, man. Joining me tonight is a sports analyst and former n. F. L. Athlete who now hosts a show called Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. Please welcome Emmanuel Acho emanuel, thanks for being here. Of course, how are you my friend . Stephen im doing well. Lets have the most comfortable uncomfortable conversation right now. The first installment of Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man came out last week. Over 20 million views so far. Yeah. Stephen whats the aim of your show . And why is discomfort an important part of it . I think that my goal is to breed conversation between black people and white people. Were facing one of our biggest racial divides, and we have to educate ourselves, and white people might beckon to my White Brothers and sisters was to expose themselves. So my goal was to break that awkward barrier between black and white people, talk about those uncomfortable things. Because i believe some of our greatest accomplishments, some of our greatest things in life are birthed through discomfort. Look at newborn babies. Thats through nine months of intensive labor, and those are the most beautiful gifts on the face of the earth. So i was like if we have an issue between black and white people right now, the best way to overcome it is through uncomfortable conversation. Stephen i watched your first video and i really enjoyed it in a mildly uncomfortable way. You answered questions you often hear from your white friends. As i said, the second episode comes out tonight featuring a conversation with matthewmccoats d toggt one was call black pele black or African American. And the most simple and safe answer is calling black people black because its accurate. There are jamaicans in america and cubans in america, theyre not africans. And some black people dont identify as african because that heritage got stripped from them during slavery. Stephen in the new episode you also talk about the difference between not racist and antiracist. Yes. Stephen can you differentiate that for me . Yes. Its not enough in 2020 to be not racist, not racist meaning i am passive when it comes to racism. I am not going to use the n word, but, like, if my friend uses it, nah, its not a big deal. We have to now be antiracist. Obviously, black people we know we have always been, but also white people as well because my white friends they infiltrate spaces i can never infiltrate as a black man so they have to call out racism. Thats what i mean by being antiracist, stephen. Its not just because okay just because i dont say the n word or im not scared of black people, if you see it you have to speak on it and call it out. Stephen also, i would say, look i would never say im not going to say people who voted for the president of the United States we have right now are racist, but given the racist things he has done they are willing to overlook it. Yes. Stephen and that itself is a tacit form of of that gives the, basically, a space for racism to flourish. Exactly. I believe it was the ben franklin quote that says something along the lines im paraphrasing we wont see justice until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are affected. And thats what i said in my first video. Its not enough for Emmanuel Acho to be outraged when someone says something or does something racist. I need my dear white friends to be just as outraged about it. Stephen my family and i were in a black lives matter march on sunday, and the person in front of me for a fair amount of the march had a sign up that said, its time for white people to have a conversation about racism with white people. Yeah, yeah. Stephen give me give me an uncomfortable start to
