Forecast. Thank you for joining us. Lets get right to our breaking news in napa county. Taking a birds eye view of the blaze from chopper five come you can see the white smoke blanketing the area not far from surrounding neighborhoods. This is all happening near deer park to stop the silverado trail about 4 miles east of calistoga. And 5 miles or so northeast of st. Helena. Jewels has more on when it broke out. Scorching the back arrange east of st. Helena and calistoga. In the last hour, we have learned the fire has grown to 1500 acres, containment still stands at 0 . Mandatory evacuations in place right now for the Deer Park Community with the flames already destroying homes, and right now fire crews are most concerned about the wind picking up tonight, and fueling the flames. We find out more about that from darren. About 2000 residents have been forced to flee their homes in napa county, dozens of hospital patients have been evacuated. Those evacuations covering 660 homes and wine country communities. All patients at the Medical Center have been safely evacuated ahead of the advancing flames. They will be shelter at the Crosswalk Community church in napa county. Many of the evacuees were forced from their homes, and just last month. When the lightning fires broke out. There is a mountain right there. And you can see the flames and it was just really scary because it was just like a lion of flames. She was panicked and she was emotionally crying, you know, like dont go there come you know, i can see the fire. Reporter ambulance crews from contra costa and San Francisco rushing it to help evacuate patients from this st. Helena hospital. Patients were shuttled to nearby hospitals and ambulances, while workers packed up their cars with supplies. Given the hospitals location, this is not the first time they have had to evacuate. This is not uncommon, we have done this before but we have done it safely every time, so we have an expert team that is used to doing it. At least 40 patients were safely evacuated, the hospital will remain closed until firefighters say it is safe to return. And we do have coverage, team coverage, on the fire. Dance and the Weather Center tracking the hot and dry conditions but we first with Katie Nielsen and she is near the fire lines. We are only about a mile north of the hospital that was evacuated earlier today. We are right on the edge of bell canyon. This has been the most active firefight of the day. I dont know if you can see this, but these are some of the flames that actually jumped the lines on the south side of bell canyon. This is the big concern, it has become an all out air war. With tankers and helicopters trying to slow the fire spread toward silverado trail. Air tankers paint the riches around bell canyon with fire retardant. As firefighters on the ground start fires on the east side of silverado trail to protect nearby structures. If anything gets into the yard, it will all be gone. Reporter tom was on the west of silverado trail. He decided not to evacuate and is instead using garden hoses to try to save his home. Hope we dont end up with the poor guy right across the street. His whole house went up in flames about five minutes ago. For most of the day the main firefight has been a long bell canyon, as firefighters try to keep the flames from moving south, but when the afternoon wind picked up, that is exactly what happened. Flames shooting high above the rage. As more air attacks were brought in to slow the progress. Things could change in a heartbeat, no doubt. Now what we do know right now as firefighters have positioned resource is at the south end of bell canyon, they are trying to stop this bread toward the community of deer park and also on the north side of the canyon, toward angwin. It looks ominous behind you. You are saying that it jumps the fire line, so what are some of the concerns right now, and into the evening . The Biggest Issue tonight is going to be those wins. We have seen gusty, unpredictable wind and this fire is burning in some very steep terrain, so firefighters were trying to keep the fire contained within bell canyon because they knew if it did jump over those retardant lines that they were able to lay down some of those air tankers earlier today. That could make a run of some of these other ridgelines, so we are still seeing a lot of those air resources in place, but again, the big concern tonight is trying to protect those Populated Areas both to the north of bell canyon near anglin, on kind of the howell mountainside of napa county, and then also to the south, more toward deer park. It looks like it is actually keeping come you know, getting closer to you. What is ahead of you, are you in an area where there are homes there or not . Is there concern where you are right now . Reporter so we are actually in an area that is on the very north end of sanitarium road. This is about a mile north of the hospital. There really are not a lot of homes where we are. This is a very heavily populated area in terms of wineries, which is kind of good and bad. The wineries create a natural fire break, but then at the same time, this is so much of the industry for napa county, there are so many vineyards have already been hit hard this year, i some of the fires, also the covid restrictions, so when we were talking with some of these folks earlier today, they just said, you know, what is going to be next . This does not seem like it is ending anytime soon, and again this is where we are talking about some of the air resources, we can hear some of those helicopters in the air right now, they are trying to make some drops on the south side, of bell canyon reservoir, just trying to slow this thing down so those ground crews can get in. We have seen some of the inmate firefighting crews, weve also seen dozers, things like that, so we do know that there are quite a few resources here in place and they will be here throughout the night. It looks like that fire is coming closer to you all. All right, thank you. You can see how close the smoke is to katy and with the return of bad air, well, the fires from chopper five come you can see the billowing clouds blanketing the area. The spare the air alert has been extended through at least tomorrow, and katy said it was all about the wind and what was going to happen. Im going to go into a lot of detail on why the wind is a concern for the class fire. Tomorrow morning, coming up the complete forecast. For right now i want to talk about air quality and mocha and if you look at the satellite over my shoulder, you can see what the payoff is from an offshore wind event. I mean, this looks like it did two weeks ago, when we were seeing huge amounts of smoke. Being put into the atmosphere over california. Now the class fire is the one down here. Can you see that little plume of smoke . That is a small one. Look at the rest of california. Im going to put five other fires on here, i will label them all. You can see with the plumes of smoke are coming from. The one heres called is at did not even exist until this morning and that started to take off, so if we take a look at airquality back at home it looks bad out there today, it is impossible to say exactly which one of those fires is responsible for it. We are doing okay down here on the ground right now, air quality is moderate to good unless you are in petaluma where it is that watch what happens overnight tonight. The smoke forecast shows you the creek fire, the one supporting over here, that smoke will start getting drawn our way, expect the sky to look smoke year tomorrow as a result of this. This does not even factor in the class fire or the other fires. Out the back with more the rest of the forecast, including this heatwave, coming up in just a few minutes. For now, juliet, over to you. Putting pjd to cut power to 65,000 customers. As of all this is not enough some of you might have felt a little shaken up in the south by a little quake hit by now. It struck about 6 miles northeast of milpitas in the hills. Some people reportedly felt it. As far as fremont and san jose. Still ahead, a bombshell report on the president income taxes, less than 40 days from election day. Back to the fire watch napa county, joining the fight, that Global Supertanker is the largest in the world. Capable of caring just under 20,000 gallons of water of retardants. Take a live look outside can we can see a faint fear of hastening over the bay area. The questions tonight, a member the forecast yesterday was calling for winch to peak tonight in that does not sound like the news. Not good news and i want to start out by showing you why that could be a problem for the fire, the best way to do that in terms of the class fire is to first give you some perspective for where we know this fire has burned so far, it is so new it can be real difficult to get a map to where you can get at least an idea for where we are talking about these flames. Now this map takes advantage of satellites. The color coding on here shows where the satellite has not only read heat signature coming off flames, but it is also showing it to you over time. In other words, you can see where the altars lots are, when you said to get the purple spots. The general take away from this is that fire worked its way up to the north. Which is odd because most of those wins which were offshore winds were blowing the smoke this way, but underneath that down on the ground, the flames were actually going to the north, because they were being driven mainly by the terrain. They were burning uphill which is why we saw katy standing on the top of the ridge line. Now as we get into the overnight hours, the wind will switch, and it will start pushing the smoke. Also the flames will start getting pushed from the northeast to the southwest. And again idea for that, lets put the locator on their for the fires and i will bring in the colors and the wind streams and show you how the wind will behave overnight. That gets us to this evening but it is early tomorrow morning, when the second wave of offshore wind comes back. That is 9 00 tomorrow morning. Very similar timing to today. That is when we are singh the strongest wind for saturday. The brighter the color come the stronger the wind, that could fan the flames a little more but it has been erratic up there at best because we are also dealing with terrain. Not to mention, we are not at the peak of the humidity drop. As far as our heat is concerned, lets get to the next two days, your sevenday forecast shows you tomorrow we are doing 102. For daytime highs in land. Now that we have seen the overview, i just want to give you the review on the daytime highs for tomorrow, pick out your par of the bay area, im going to go over these in much greater specifics coming up in the 6 00 newscast and we will pull out your specific part of the bay area but there is a take away.
