Grizzly peak or skyline boulevard from 9 pm until 6 am, until this red flag event is over to make sure that those roads can stay clear for fire engines, if need be. Live in health, adria, kpix 5. We went today cal fire crews have already dug enough containment lines, this season, to cover the distance from san diego to new york city. With the new red flag warning now in effect, they have their work cut out to surround the glass fire in napa and sonoma counties. That blaze now covers more than 88 square miles and is just 5 contained. The solid yellow on this map shows the mandatory evacuation zone surrounding the fire perimeter is in orange and the lighter yellow, like the area around st. Helena you see there, represents evacuation warnings. The biggest areas of concern right now, the communities of calistoga and anglin. It is not just the wind that is a problem. We have 118 aircraft yesterday alone, we dropped 80,000 gallons of retardant on this fire. Between the two counties. But obviously one of the biggest impediments we have is the visibility, because of the smoke, which is not only a health hazard, but also impedes their operations to actually be effective with our air fleet. There is so much smoke across the state, this is the satellite perspective would ordinarily we are looking at this to see clouds. You are seeing this gray, none of this, zero, is cloud cover. That is all smoke. That is being produced by the wildfires across the state, and some of it drifting down from oregon and washington, the smoke forecast model has a good handle on the Current Situation showing the thick smoke just stretched all across the state, tomorrow for the bay area not going to see much improvement. The air quality will be poor, but the onshore breeze will start to kick in, late in the day and that will help to push the smoke a little further inland as we head into the weekend. Poor air quality on saturday, downwind of the fire in the north bay, and also for the inland east bay and santa clara body bay. The onshore breeze strengthens and it will also crack the heatwave but it will be hot tomorrow. We will get into the details of how hot and a look at how hot september was, it was record setting, we will take a look at that in a few minutes. Thank you, paul. We are getting out to our first look at the destruction left behind inside the iconic medieval castle style calistoga winery, castillo dr marissa, sunday night you will remember the flames from the glass fire torched the wineries farmhouse, containing a wine storage chamber. Fermentation room. And a bottling facility. Expensive machinery, and tens of thousands of bottles of wine that was stored there, burned. However, the owner is grateful, that the distinctive castle complex and tasting room were unscathed. In all, the estimated loss is between 15,000 and 20 million. 15 million and 20 million. I took my heart and soul into this project. It is my dream castle, my dream, essentially everything that is sold here. When we are out of business. There is one bright spot, the majority of the owners wine supply, about 100,000 cases, are safely stored offsite. They were untouched by the fire. That is one of the oldest forms of Affordable Housing in San Francisco. It is called single room occupancy hotel. The very people who fought to preserve this housing are calling it dangerous. In our original series, project home, susie, have a look at why sros for low income families, can soon be phased out. They are for families with children. It is hard for the kids. Reporter she has lived in this building for 5 years, with her 65yearold mother, her husband, and their sixyearold son. And she moved here from china, she had grand ideas about what the United States would look like. But, now, it is a bit different. At least in china, she had her own bathroom sink and small kitchen. In this building, she has to share all of those things with 30 of her neighbors, during a pandemic. More than ever, i want to move out on her own, to have a bigger space, and enough space for us. Reporter she is one of 30,000 san franciscans living in an sro, short for single room occupancy hotel. Her building is at the end of this block on washington street. Hers isnt one of those windows or rooms that you can see from the outside, it is in the middle, with no natural light, no windows, and no sink. And typical of most sros, it is a 10 by 10 foot space. This is what she shares with her family of four. During covid19, it is feeling even more crowded. It is a very small room. The four of us, we have a bunk bed, my mom would sleep on the upper bunk. I would sleep on the lower bunk with my son. My husband would need to sleep on the floor. Reporter sros are really ever used for the intended single room purpose. This population is known to openly disregard fire codes, and crowd multigenerational families, into a tiny space. As many as eight or nine people are sharing one 10 by 10 room, and that is just unbelievable. Reporter for decades, sros have been defended by Affordable Housing advocates like materials, but the pandemic, has changed his mind. I think covid19 accelerated that, and made us realize that places where folks had to share bathrooms, had to share kitchen facilities, really have some inherent problems that make them dangerous and an epidemic, we had multiple people tell us that they were you know, going to the bathroom inside the room, if they had a sink, which not a lot of families do. Or in a bucket. Reporter 27 of San Franciscos sro buildings have had positive cases of covid19. 50 of the families living in sros have lost work due to covid19. 48 have had their income dropped to zero. Both my mom and my husband are unemployed now. Reporter she is now the breadwinner for the family, she works for the chinese progressive association, and help essential workers who also live in sros. Nurses and first responders, like when they come home, they stay in a guest bedroom, they shower, before they even like get into the house. Those are things that are just not possible in sro hotels. Reporter she has repeatedly applied for other Affordable Housing options, that would give her family more space, but every single time, she is turned down. It is the same story for her mother. How many times have you applied . 95 of families and sros fall into a very specific gap, they dont make enough money to qualify for Affordable Housing. The rundown is Supportive Housing but that is reserved for people who are homeless or in a shelter. So, the longer she stays in this sro, the more difficult it is going to be to get out. But, he says it is time for the city to start thinking about where these 30,000 people can go. I think the consensus is, it is not enough, it is not okay, and we are starting to be pressed by time. Reporter her building is typical of many sros in San Francisco in that it was built back in 1912. He says it is likely nearing the end of its useful life. Susie, kpix 5. Bloomberg news is reporting that hope hicks, he is the latest person in the present orbit, to contract the virus. He traveled with President Trump, aboard air force one, to and from the president ial debate, on tuesday. She also accompanied the president to his minnesota rally, yesterday. Amazon reports nearly 20,000 employees contracted the virus over the past six months. They include amazon, and whole foods, frontline workers across the u. S. , in total, that is less than 2 of amazons global workforce. The Company Revealed the data following pressure from labor groups, and politicians. Coronavirus has hit meat and poultry plants across the country, hard. There are 2 reportedly tens of thousands of cases, with hundreds of deaths involved. Merced county is not reporting nine deaths at the foster farms plant in livingston. Cbs is, anna, talked to me about how the county advocated for a shutdown, even though the federal government seems to urge otherwise. Some 2600 people work at the plant. The Public Health officials declared an outbreak there in late june. During a visit, recommended foster farms, test all of its workers. Says department director, rebecca, you need to conduct universal screening. She says only limited testing occurred. In july, 2 workers died of covid19. The county continue to monitor the outbreak, and on august 7, foster farms provided this, showing the number of workers actively infected and those whose cases they described as result. County Health Officer, doctor salvador, noticed the list contained no deaths. Even though county health staff say workers had told them there were more. So, the Health Department emailed foster farms, to ask if there were any known deaths. And the next week, received a new list, this time,. Doctor said there are 5 names previously listed only as resolved, or now listed as deaths. They were put in the category that made it difficult for our investigators to tag them as being people who had died. Reporter in response, the company told us there was no intentional effort on the part of foster farms, to deceive the Merced County Public Health department, and they said all issues related to the reporting of data, were quickly resolved. Now, with eight deaths and over 350 confirmed cases, late in august, county Health Officials told foster farms, the plant would have to be closed. That is when she says she suddenly found herself talking to federal agencies. With one she says mentioning the defense production act. Part of the president s executive order, to keep things running. Was anybody suggesting to you that that was the case, that you cant shutdown this plant because. Yes. From the federal government. They were trying to intimidate, we refused to be intimidated. Reporter the usda confirmed setting up a phone call with various federal and state agencies, but did not respond to our question of whether it pressured county Health Officials to keep the plant open. The plant was forced to close for a week, then reopened under county monitoring. Foster farms says its following Public Health officials requirements and has now had a testing benchmark of a less than 1 Positivity Rate among its workers. With what it says is now the most extensive Testing Program in california. We heard in the piece that the Health Department director claimed that they refused to be intimidated, that was really interesting. We are talking about a small county Health Department, going up against the trump administration, tell me a little bit more about that relationship. You are right, they are a small county Health Department, and they even will say that to you. They say they dont have the most resources, but i think what it really came down to, for her and also for their Health Officer who is a doctor, who has worked with people in the community, for many years, as a doctor was, that these people needed to be taken care of, and they had you know, this number of deaths. They had eight deaths by this point. I think for them, that was the bottom line, was not you know, something needed to be done. Give me a sense of the worker down there, the person who you know, is providing for his or her family. Are they the kind of workers in your opinion, the people, the families that you interviewed, that would stand up and say i am not coming to work, this is dangerous. Are they just kind of going about what they have to do to feed their families at this point . You have a lot of immigrants there, you have a lot of hispanic workers, and you also have a significant portion of punjabi workers working there, and these are people who have these jobs because that is the work that they can get. And for many of them standing up is not an option. They have too much writing on those jobs, they are supporting their families, it is the midst of a pandemic. It has hired a licensed healthcare professional, to oversee all of its covid19 programs. As the classifier continues to print, other fires across the state continue to burn, air quality across the bay area is just dreadful. Is not going to our home was burned to the ground in the tubbs fire. The flames, the ash, it was terrifying. Thousands of family homes are destroyed in wildfires. Families are forced to move and higher property taxes are a huge problem. Prop 19 limits taxes on wildfire victims so families can move without a tax penalty. Nineteen will help rebuild lives. Vote yes on 19. The unfair money bail system. He, accused of rape. While he, accused of stealing 5. The stanford rapist could afford bail; got out the same day. No workers comp. No unemployment benefits. Vote no on the deceptive uber, lyft, doordash prop 22. One ride california doesnt want to take. We are following some breaking news in San Francisco right now, union square is shut down because of Police Activity in the area, this is video from the citizen app, at this point, it is not clear exactly what is going on, or what happened, but police are telling people to avoid the area, around stockton, and geary, we have a crew on the way and we will keep you posted. I want to give you an update on the fire weather conditions around the classifier, obviously we are concerned about it spreading into calistoga, possibly even st. Helena and conditions tomorrow are actually not going to get any better around the fire. Temperatures will be hot between 90 and 100 degrees unless you are right underneath the thick of smoke but the fire crews have to deal with that and air support is impossible. Humidities will be bone dry. 7 to 15 once it warms up during the afternoon. Sustained winds from the northwest you can see the wind arrows 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour but the guests will be up to 30 Miles Per Hour in the higher terrain where the fire is still burning intensely, which will help to push it especially towards st. Helena, even potentially further down the napa valley. Lets talk about air quality, there has been a ton of smoke produced by that fire. We have gotten some of the smoke from the greek fire but the worst air quality today has been the northbay in the vicinity of the fire. Inland east bay, particularly the trivalley and Santa Clara Valley. May be marginal improvement for the Santa Clara Valley for tomorrow, and saturday and even into sunny. Unhealthy for sensitive groups still in the forecast monday. This is the epa forecast. I tracked the smoke, with the forecast model about 20 minutes ago, and this may be too pessimistic, we may see some improvement as we head into the weekend and early next week. We will keep you updated but i certainly understand the incident can go with the worst case scenario, because it is 2020 and that is what has happened including a record warm month of september. The warmest on record at those sites top 5 warmest , and just outside the top 10 for downtown San Francisco, it was an abnormally hot month, to begin with, and then to wrap up the month as well. For 1 october, it was hot, temperatures mostly in the 90s, even 93 in the city, half moon bay, you are the lucky spot at 71 degrees. Current temperatures in the 80s and 90s. It is down into the 70s downtown, temperatures didnt get quite as hot as we thought today because of that veil of smoke overhead, that will insulate the ground and keep temperatures from dropping very far, upper 60s and low 70s to start the day tomorrow and it will be another hot day tomorrow, very similar temperatures further inland with heisel into the 80s, if not well into the 90s, around 100 degrees east of the diablo range. May be a few degrees cooler around the bay. Both because of the smoke overhead but also the onshore breeze starting to kick in late in the day friday, that will be more noticeable as we had through the weekend, improving air
