The time for tallying votes is winding down. The nation awaiting who will be in the white house for the next four years. If it takes a long time, thats good. It means were being methodical. Were checking the facts. Its like in carpentry. You measure twice and cut once. Comes down to five key states. For now, joe biden, like the rest of us is left to watch and wait. As slow as it goes, it can be numbing. But never forget the tallies arent just numbers. They represent votes and voters. The president is angry and he is disappointed as he admitted to some people close to him that the math may not be on his side. There is no future for the Republican Party if we do not stand and fight in this critical moment. President trumps chief of staff mark meadows tested positive for covid19. We dont know exactly when mark meadows tested positive, but he was at the white house on Election Night. The u. S. Were joining you from cbs news election headquarters in times square. We also want to assure you that later on were going to have a bunch of the stories you come to expect from us. Technology, books, food, music, all of it. Thats a bit later in the show. First, we have a ton of news to get to this morning. We do indeed. Lets get to the still undecided president ial election. The race between President Trump and biden has slowed to a call. Nevada, arizona, pennsylvania are still being counted. Joe biden sitting 17 votes shy of the 270 electoral votes needed to win. Is leading in all four of those states. On friday, biden jumped ahead of President Trump in pennsylvania thanks to a strong showing in philadelphia. Supporters there filled the streets in hopes of a victory that would put biden over 270 electoral votes. Meanwhile, supporters of President Trump rallied outside a vote location in arizona. The president needs victories in arizona and all but one of those other tossup states to win another four years in the white house. Late last night, biden addressed the nation from wilmington, delaware. Nikole killion is covering the Biden Campaign. Good morning. Good morning, jeff. Former Vice President joe biden hopes to be able to address the American People again today, but last night, he made clear he believes hes well on his way to victory and has a mandate to get to work. Were going to win this race. Former Vice President joe biden addressing the nation last night just a few votes shy of reaching the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Were on track to over 300 electoral votes. Electoral college votes. And look at the national numbers. Were going to win this race with a clear majority with the nation behind us. Weve gotten over 74 million votes. Let me repeat that. 74 million votes. Reporter biden did not claim victory, but his remarks came at the end of a day that began with him taking over the lead in pennsylvania and georgia. Flanked by his running mate, senator kamala harris, biden gave a preview of what his administrations priorities would be. We have Serious Problems to deal with from covid to the economy to Racial Justice to climate change. We dont have any more time to waste. Reporter and he called for an end to what he called partisan warfare. The purpose of our politics, the work of the nation isnt to fan the flames of conflict but to solve problems. Reporter before those remarks, aides had planned for biden to deliver a primetime speech, but that was only if the race had been called. Delaware senator chris coons told reporters he thinks pennsylvania could be called as early as today which would be enough to put the former Vice President over the top. Dana . We are all anxiously waiting. The Trump Campaign says the election is not over, and is vowing to fight on with legal challenges to the vote counts. In a tweet last night, mr. Trump wondered if bidens leads would reverse as the president s lawsuits move forward. Ben tracy is at the white house with the latest. Good morning. Good morning. Cbs news learned the president is angry and disappointed that some of his republican allies are not defending him more. But here at the white house, he continues to tell his top aides that hes going to fight on and not concede. President trump out of sight friday, inside the white house where the mood is somber. One aide telling cbs news the end is near. Last night the president fired a warning shot on twitter saying joe biden should not wrongfully claim the office of president. I could make that claim also. Legal proceedings are just now beginning. While his supporters are gathering outside ballot counting centers, the president s team scrambles to foo find a coherent legal strategy. Lawsuits filed in michigan, georgia and nevada have already been dismissed and the recounts the campaign plans to request in wisconsin and georgia are unlikely to change the result. So team trump is focused on pennsylvania trying to get ballots received within a threeday window after election day tossed out. Philadelphias mayor is fed up with the legal assault. What the president needs to do is, frankly, put his big boy pants on. He needs to acknowledge the fact that he lost and congratulate the winner. But the president has told his aides he has no plans to concede to joe biden. Theres tremendous corruption and fraud going on. Reporter instead, without evidence, he continues to allege fraud. Some of his fellow republicans are not convinced. There is simply no evidence that anybody has shown me or anyone else im aware of any kind of widespread corruption or fraud. Reporter republican senator ben sasse of nebraska said in a pointed statement voter fraud is poisoned to selfgovernment so these are major allegations. If the president s legal team has real evidence, they need to present it immediately. Reporter an outside adviser to President Trump says despite the campaigns legal fight, the president is resigned to the fact that he may lose. They say he understands the math simply may not be there for him. Michelle . And the count continues. Ben, thank you. With 20 electoral votes at stake, pennsylvania is key to both candidates chances of winning. President trump cannot be reelected without winning it, and joe biden can win the election with a victory in the keystone state. This morning, the former Vice President holds a nearly 29,000vote edge over President Trump, but with tens of thousands of ballots still to be counted, we are awaiting more of the count later today. Jericka duncan is in philadelphia. Good morning. Good morning to you, michelle. Right now we just checked here in the state. About 89,000 votes that still need to be counted. All of that important work, at least for the philadelphia area, is happening right here behind me inside the Pennsylvania Convention center. Now last night, we noticed there were a number of demonstrations going into their second day of people outside. There were Trump Supporters calling for a recount already while a larger crowd just feet away calling for every vote to be counted. A very heavy Police Presence there. But again the big story is these election workers still doing that important work as we speak. In fact, here in philadelphia, they have been working around the clock. After counting the remaining ballots, there are still provisional ballots. And overseas military ballots to consider. Last night Justice Samuel alito issued an order reminding the secretary of state here that those votes that received between november 3rd and 6th still need to be segregated. This is important because we know the Trump Campaign has presented some issues and concerns about those ballots. They have been approved by the Supreme Court, though, upholding a lower decision to count those ballots as part of the final result. But again, right now here in the state of pennsylvania, over 89,000 ballots that still need to be counted based on the states website which was updated late last night. Jeff . Jericka, thank you. Other states still counting this morning is georgia. Where 16 electoral votes are up for grabs. The former Vice President leads President Trump by about 7,000 votes in georgia right now. With the margins razor thin and with neither candidate hitting the necessary 50 of the vote there will likely be a recount. Georgia voters will also be casting ballots in january as both of the States Senate race goes to a runoff. That outcome will likely determine which Party Controls the senate. The vote count continues in two southwestern states where a combined 17 electoral votes are up for grabs. Joe biden is leading President Trump by about 22,000 votes or nearly 2 Percentage Points in nevada. He is also holding a slight edge in arizona. It could be the First Time Since 1996 that the grand canyon state is won by a democrat. A win for biden in both states would give him exactly 270 electoral votes, enough to win the presidency. Jamie yuccas is in phoenix with more. Good morning. Good morning, dana. In the next four hours, we should have a clearer picture of how the president ial race will stand in arizona. Thats when the first of two ballot dumps is expected to come in today. About 92,000 total ballots are left to be counted here in Maricopa County and 172,000 throughout the state. President trump needs to get more than about 57 of those votes to catch up to the former Vice President. So its tight here. Election workers are hoping to finish up counting today, and its been a long election for those staffers. Let me tell you. They began processing early ballots october 20th. Tensions are running high outside the Maricopa County Elections Office as well. For several days, President Trump supporters, many of them armed, have been holding rallies outside the Election Center here chanting stop the steal. And we only want legal votes counted. And while it may seem like its taking a really long time to count these votes, officials tell me they are on track to complete their fastest count ever with the most votes theyve ever received. Jeff . Thank you. For more on the president s legal pathways forward, were joined by election law expert david becker, founder of the center for election innovation and cbs news contributor. He joins us from washington. Good morning. Lets talk big picture here. As far as youre concerned, do any of the legal challenges youve seen have merit . I havent seen anything that has any merit. Theres not many facts that to back up these baseless claims of fraud or other things. One thing to be clear about. What were seeing in states like pennsylvania, georgia, arizona is just the normal, very transparent process of counting valid ballots. And in all of those cases, the only votes were seeing so far that have been reported are ballots that were received on or before election day. So even the ballots in pennsylvania that the president has made some issue of that might be received in the three days after election day, those have been segregated. They havent been counted yet. All of the counts everyone is seeing are valid ballots collected at by election day in those states. David, you said valid ballots. Weve heard a lot of people say legal votes versus the illegal votes. What is a legal vote . A legal vote is the same as a valid ballot. Its a ballot cast by an eligible voter. And all of these ballots are legal votes. Im not quite sure where the semantic word games are coming from. But every ballot being counted in pennsylvania, georgia, arizona and by the way, ballot counting is going on all over the country still. Theres only one state that i know that has actually certified official results. So there are theres counting going on. The most ballots left to be counted in the country are in the state of california but were not paying as much attention to it because california has been called in the presidency. Weve heard a lot from various secretaries of states throughout the country. What is their role going to be in this process . Well, their role is going to be what its always been. They are faithful enforcers of state law with regard to elections. And it doesnt matter whether they are democrats like in pennsylvania and arizona or republicans like in georgia and nevada. They are doing an amazing job working with all of their local and county Election Officials to make sure that the ballots that have been validly cast, legally cast are being counted appropriately. And to be perfectly honest, lets think about this. Weve got almost 150 million ballots being cast right now. To be able to count all of those ballots, it seems like its taking a long time. When we have a million volunteers working around the clock. Were doing an amazing job of counting all these ballots as quickly as we can in such a close election. David, a lot of people are seeing a repeat here of 2000 when the Supreme Court intervened, made the decision on the 500vote count and decided in favor of george w. Bush. How likely is the Supreme Court to stepping into this one . In 2000 what we had is one state that was deciding the presidency. And the margin in that state was just a few hundred votes. And the legal teams from both candidates went down and akimulated facts over weeks and worked that out in court. We have a very different situation this year. We have multiple states that are relatively close but not as close as 2000. Theyre all in the thousands of votes. We never see recounts overturn statewide elections of multiple thousands of vote margins. That just doesnt happen in american history. You might find a few hundred votes. Its very unlukely the courts will find a way to interfere in this leks or make a ruling that would change the outcome. I dont believe they are looking to. The courts want this democratic process to work its way out and for the voters to have their voice. How long do you think that might take . That depends. I am cautiously optimistic well have a call on this race some time this weekend. I think then, of course, the states officially certify results. There may be recounts in states like georgia, maybe wisconsin, although i dont think theyll overturn the results were seeing now. And then the Electoral College meets in middecember and well have a final decision. David becker, thank you. If Frontline Health care workers have been our superheroes during the coronavirus, hospitals and Health Care Facilities have been the bat caves. Constructing new hospitals or building wings cost hundreds of millions of dollars and can take years. Theyre designed and built with the expectation of being able to last for decades. And with the coronavirus, were learning just how big a role they play in the fight. Hospitals were always designed to treat the ill. But battling covid19 over the last seven months has pushed many to their limit. The assumption if you get sick that well have a hospital bed for you is a false assumption. Reporter across the country, surges in cases have forced hospitals like chicagos Rush University Medical Center to spring into action. The first thing we did was create a command center. To bring together all the different people in the organization to represent all of the potential land mines and unmet needs wed have. Reporter dr. Omar lateef is president and ceo at rush. Then we just took a giant board and wrote down, how do we change physically this hospital so that we can take care of larger numbers of people. Reporter that process actually started eight years ago. Long before the pandemic when rush added a new wing to their hospital. When you build something for the future of health care, you try to build something that has flexibility or agility in it. We built an 830,000squarefoot building in the city that has the ability to change air flows. The ability to double rooms. The ability to surge to 133 its capacity. Its pretty intensive. Reporter former nurse brenda smith is a health care designer with perkins and will. The Architectural Firm that worked on the rork project. We have phases where we create a list of all of the kinds of functional spaces that they need. You look at the flow of people, both staff and patients, and you look at the flow of kind of equipment and all the things that are required to operate in that space. And some of that has been rethought with covid as well. Reporter future design must also consider Frontline Health care workers. Many of whom had to make hospitals their home. People stay sometimes 15 hours, 20 hours, 24 hours, 36 hours with little breaks in between. We really need to make sure that we provide areas where they can rest. Reporter Something Else to consider . Emergency conversions, transforming everything from city parks to convention centers. We had to move very fast. Reporter back in april, jason s took this on. We have to convert nonhealth buildings into health buildings. Thats where we look at a diminishing standard of care which may not give us the best outcomes. The task of repurposing spaces is nothing new. They did temporary hospitals in the 1918 pandemic. Reporter historian jean Jeanne Kisacky said the flu presented its own challenges and solutions. Most of the hospitals are built along the old version, the big open wards. And they are rapidly overwhelmed. After the pandemic, theres a real shift to having smaller rooms and one patient per room or what they call one unit or one disease. So they could have three patients with the same disease, and they would put them in the same room. Reporter if Todays Health Care architects learn anything from their 20th century peers, it will be to take the lessons of this pandemic forward. By improving our ability to respond to the next one. So the big lesson here is i think the big lesson is, the hospitals must be designed to respond more rapidly. Were talking days and weeks, not months and years. We need to be thinking about creating pandemic preparedness in terms of flexibility, scheduling and the ability to compartmentalize infectious hot spots within hospitals. In the furkts its going to be very important for hospitals to maintain normal services during a crisis. And its a constant learning process. Architects, designers, Health Care Workers tweaking, you know, in realtime. And its global. Peers are sharing all over the map, including folks here in the United States looking at their peers in asia for help because theyve had some really unique design elements. Because you dont know when the next pandemic happens, whether its a year or 100 years. If you havent seen something that someone else has, no way to prepare for it because youre not ahead. This morning, the story of a foundation that is fulfilling a battlefield promise to educate the children of these fallen warriors. Catherine herridge has their story. Staff sergeants actions are in keep with the finest military service. A really special day. Ive been proud of him for the past ten years and get to share it with the world. Reporter Miranda Shurer describes her husband ron as a softspoken force of nature. He always pushed himself every day to be the best version of himself to help others. Reporter a green beret medic, he was recognized for heroic actions in afghanistan. At the battle of shock valley in 2008, shurer repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to save ten afghan commandos and four teammates. We worked together as a tightknit family. We trusted one another, and we share a bond thats far greater than words can describe. Reporter in 2009, shurer left the military and joined the secret service as part of a counterassault team protecting the president. The special operators are in special forces are called the Quiet Professionals. And then he joined the secret service where they kind of say they stand on the sideline of history. I said he was very good at finding the coolest job possible that nobody was supposed to notice. Reporter in 2016, ron began to experience severe back pain when he sought medical care, he received a devastating diagnosis. Stage 4 lung cancer. You documented rons cancer journey. Yes. Why did you do that . By talking about the cancer right away and sharing it openly, that made it not powerful and not something that was this big thing kind of weighing on us. Reporter even while sick, ron continued donating money from each paycheck to the special Operations Warrior Foundation. The nonprofit funds education for all children who lose a parent serving in special operations from preschool through college. Even knowing that his cancer journey would ultimately likely come to this result, it wasnt on our radar that our family would be covered by it. My husband, my best friend, our hero. Reporter in may, at just 41 years old, ron lost his threeyear battle against cancer. What most people dont really take into account, i think, is that family behind ron. Miranda, tyler and cameron, they are serving as well. Reporter clay hutchmacher is the president of the special warriors foundation. The foundation was started in the aftermath of the failed rescue attempt of the 52 hostages in tehran. We lost 8 americans, 3 marines, 5 air force that left behind 17 kids. The survivors of that mission made a commitment at that time to take care of the education of those 17 kids. Weve had nearly 1500 children in our Program Since 1980, and theres 908 right now that are in the program that weve committed to funding. Reporter the special Operations Warrior Foundation recently expanded their program to include medal of honor families like the shurers. The really cool thing is, our mentors are graduates from our program. Reporter like ebony sherill whose father, jeffrey sherill, a special forces doctor was killed in 1996 when she was just 4 years old. He just wanted us to not have money get in the way of us living out our dream. Was there a point in high school or maybe middle school where you werent sure your family could afford college . Yeah, but my dad wanted so badly for us to get an education and i really wanted to do that for my family. So that we can just turn our lives around and just get to a better place. Reporter shurer reached out to the special Operations Warrior Foundation for assistance. When they said, okay, everything is covered. We asked, okay, how much . And theyre like, all of it. Its all covered. And i am forever grateful for that. Reporter since graduating with a film degree in 2014, sherill has been paying it forward with the foundation. Sometimes you need the support of somebody with that lived experience just to talk to. Reporter that sense of community is comforting for Miranda Shurer and her two sons. Due to covid19, rons funeral was delayed until last month at Arlington National cemetery. Even though, obviously, their life wont ever be the same without their father, they are growing up with so many people that care about them and care about us because they cared about ron and knowing theyre going to have that. I know my kids are going to be okay. Reporter for cbs this Morning Saturday, catherine herridge, burke, virginia. Such a great foundation. Incredible. Well hear what led to this most unusual upbringing detailed in her memoir. Later, flying into the future. The long promised arrival of flying cars may be closer than you think. Well take you to one testing zone where they are getting ready to pick up some passengers just a few years from now. Plus, performance from the threetime grammy nominees, the Avett Brothers in our saturday session. All that is ahead. First, theres still no conclusion to the president ial election. It remains an exercise in counting votes in four key states in particular and a test of the countrys patience. Former Vice President joe biden is leading President Trump in arizona, georgia, nevada and pennsylvania. Biden is 17 electoral votes shy of landing the 270 needed to win the race. President trump has 213. Late last night, the former Vice President addressed the state of the race. He appeared with his running mate, california senator kamala harris, in wilmington, delaware, and said the numbers so far present a clear, convincing story. Were on track to over 300 electoral votes. Electoral college votes. And look at the national numbers. Were going to win this race with a clear majority with the nation behind us. Weve gotten over 74 million votes. Let me repeat that. 74 million votes. Biden also called for unity and to start putting the heated rhetoric of the campaign behind us. President trump is casting more doubt on the integrity of the votecounting process. In a tweet friday he wrote, i had such a big lead in all of these states late into Election Night only to see the leads miraculously disappear as the days went by. Perhaps these leads will return as our Legal Proceedings move forward. Okay. Ed okeefe joins us for more on this closely fought president ial race. I like the way you put it. The fifth day of tuesday. For you especially. Youve been doing a great job. Weve enjoyed watching. Big picture right now. Where do things stand at this moment . Four or five states, the fate of the republic hangs in their hands. Pennsylvania, georgia, arizona, nevada and North Carolina which will take a few extra days because they gave people nine days to turn in ballots, absentee ballots. They may bes finale later on but for now were focused on pennsylvania which is expected to drop a bunch more votes later today. And we may get some sense of finality arizona depending on how many more come and where they come from. Part of the holdup is not just how many more votes are coming but the guys who count the votes over here in our decision desk can somewhat gauge where theyre coming from and get a good sense of, thats more likely to be a vote for the president or more likely to be a vote for biden, therefore, we can start to project ahead before the final count. So thats part of the holdup here. A lot of people nobody wants to get it wrong with these stakes right now. We heard from joe biden late last night. What did you take from what he had to say . Youll see this from him day after day after day up until Inauguration Day if he is the guy that ultimately wins. This call for unity. This sense that he wants to bring the country back together. And get to work as quickly as he can. In the coming days, as his transition begins youll see him step up the briefings on the coronavirus, how to work on the economic recovery. We expect maybe by thanksgiving well get a sense of the kinds of people he wants to staff his white house, fill some of the cabinet positions. Part of the problem for him, while we wait for results in the president ial race, were still also waiting to hear who has total control of the senate. There are those two special elections in georgia that are scheduled for early january. And with the senate currently divided about 4848, maybe 5048, you want to see which party will get those seats if they are democratic. It will be easier to get his cabinet nominees through. You only need a majority vote in order to get that done. If its republicans, hell have to think, is this somebody who could past muster with them and get democratic votes as well . Maybe not in the senate but the momentum certainly is building for joe biden. Im curious what the mood in both camps are. The Biden Campaign is, you know, its all over, but for the crossing of is and dotting of crossing of ts and dotting of is. So they are getting ready. They see it. They have been confident from the start. What they are most proud of is the fact at the end of the day, they had options. Several ways to get to 270. For the president at this point it all rests on pennsylvania. It doesnt appear to be trending in his direction. Republicans increasingly understand that, save for the recounts and legal maneuvers theyll attempt, theres very little left at this point for them to do unless miraculously a bunch of ballots arrive in the mail from overseas. The absentee ballots that all skewed in his direction but trends dont suggest thats whats going to happen. Mustsee tv. Ed okeefe, thank you for the little sleep and a lot of knowledge. On the fifth day of tuesday. Its almost six minutes after the hour. Heres a look at the weather for your weekend. She had a stellar career in the financial world, but life started out very differently for Patricia Chadwick. Well hear her recollections of growing up in a virtual cult separated from her parents. Ask your doctor about opdivo plus yervoy. Patricia chadwick was a force in the financial industry for three decades. As she rose to the upper echelons of that world she kept one big secret. Chadwick had grown up in a cult led by an excommunicated Catholic Priest inspect her memoir little sister she describes how she overcame being cut off from her family and the outside world. Within the church, Patricia Walsh chadwick finds joy. To go to church and hear gregorian chant. I love to go to monasteries. I love to engage with religious people. Reporter its a familiarity that dates back to her childhood. Born in massachusetts in 1948. Her parents were members of a religious order, the slaves of the immaculate heart of mary. Consisted of 50, 55 people, banded together over a dogma of the Catholic Church which said you had to be catholic to get to heaven. Reporter father leonard feeney, a jesuit priest and Catherine Clark founded the church. The community was made up of educated communities. Her father a philosophy and theology teacher. They all lived at the center. I felt as though i had 58 uncles and aunts. It was absolutely splendid. Im talking about when im 3 and 4 years old. Nothing but joy and happiness. Reporter but over time, things changed. Chadwick traced it back to her parents vow to obey father fiendey. They were ordered to do things. Giving up their names so that i called them sister Elizabeth Ann and brother james. I didnt call them mom and dad. Ordered to wear a black outfit like a nuns clothing and monks clothing. They were coerced into vows of celibacy. Did this religious order become a cult . I believe it did. Reporter its a realization chadwick only recently came to while writing her memoir little sister. That was the first time i thought about it that way. People were fearful of being kicked out. They had become those obedient members of this religious order. And they knew they didnt have another option. Reporter like when the Centers Children were separated from their parents. At the time, chadwick was just 6. What was that first night like for you . It was really difficult. The floor that we slept in was the one that had been my familys apartment. My parents were moved out of it. And i remember crying that night because every night my father would sing songs to us and tell us a bedtime story. And that night it was silence. Reporter with the family unit broken apart, sister catherines role strengthened. She was the one that controlled everything. The big punisher. 2 1 23foot piece of rubber hose used time and again on children for things you and i might think were actually childs play. Right. I remember none of us could hold the hands of our little siblings. And my baby sister was just turning 1 and starting to walk. And i loved having her hold my fingers, and i would walk backwards. Were you told why . Never a reason why. We were told we couldnt pick and choose anything for ourselves. And to this day, if somebody says, what would you like to have, my instinct is to say whatever you would like me to have. Its just the words that are now muscle memory. Reporter stillriver, massachusetts became the centers new home when chadwick was 9. 17 acres 40 miles outside of baufts where she explored her inate freedom from teenage crushes to defying authority. Without any guidance, any knowledge, any parental support, there i was finding myself just in more and deeper trouble. And eventually, i think sister catherine reached the point in her mind i was destroying her mission. I needed to be discarded. The day i graduated from high school, i was taken away. Not saying goodbye to anyone in the whole community. Reporter father feeney and sister catherine still controlled what was next. Sectarial school. The moment i finished that course and got a job, i found a single room at the ywca. That was my first apartment. I was then on my own, and i was 18. I was incapable of carrying on a sentence that had anything to do about the real world. So i had my eyes wide open. My ears wide open and my mouth shut. And little by little, i took on a Comfort Level with engaging. Reporter over the next five years, chadwick also got her family back as her parents and four siblings all left the center. I expected you to have anger, but you dont have that. My father told me once that he and my mother planned one night to take us out in a car and leave. And i said, why didnt you . And they said, then what . My father was 12 years not teaching. How was he going to get a job . He had been deprived of the things that would have allowed him to walk out. And thats what a cult does. They strip you of who you are. I can understand it completely. If you could go back in time and live as a family instead of in the center, would you have changed that . I would not. And when i look at where i am today, im happily married. Ive got my own family. Wonderful friends and extraordinary career. I have traveled the world. And i think, if just one thing were changed in that whole upbringing that i had, maybe i wouldnt be where i am today. And so i would change nothing. Reporter while chadwick says that doesnt mean parts of her life werent painful, its that life story which has brought comfort to others. What has been most rewarding is to have the children i grew up with say, thank you for writing that story. Right. I think they saw it as validation for themselves. So for me, thats a grace. That was a blessing to have written the book. And that makes me extraordinarily happy. Reporter there were 39 children that grew up in that environment. I want to point out, when you read this book, you see the spirit within patricia throughout. And it was something we talked a lot about. It was in her even though nobody was directing her. She obviously couldnt speak with her parents, though they were on the property, and it was just always within her and it was when she was no longer on site that was able to come through even more. Shes enthralling to listen to. This story, i could not put it down because you sit there saying, youre kidding me. This couldnt have. And then you see what shes able to overcome. And again, shes not angry. And that amazed me more than anything. Shes a survivor. And still a catholic as she points out. Great job, dana. Up next, his works fill bookshelves and his personal appearances fill huge theaters, usually. David sedaris is out with a collection of his favorite works. Well get his thoughts on the pandemic and one unusual way hes passing the time. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. To be there for the people i love. This morning as we continue highlighting the best new books every week, David Sedaris, the best of me is a handpicked collection of his favorites. Its hilarious, touching and crass. Some of the odd enduring qualities that have made him so famous over the years. Before the pandemic, he was the only author we knew of who could fill concert venues so people could listen to him read out loud. During the pandemic he is still finding things to laugh about. Starting with zoom. Thank you for not doing a zoom interview. Well, i did one, but my policy was to do none. But and it wasnt that satisfying. Is it for anyone . I think some lazy people prefer it. Like they say, oh, you can you dont have to wear pants. And you dont have to leave the house. And i think, how lazy can you get . David sedaris writing has changed thve s. Bu orgyelaarr whe o got stuck chimney . Reporter but hes never lost his brutal sense of humor. Who was this burglar id ask. Did they identify his body . He was a gypsy, a drifter. And on two occasions an arab. Reporter this is the first time sedaris has performed for someone in person since the pandemic began. He met us in new yorks central park. Its also the first time he signed his muchsought after personalized copies of books in months. His newest collection is called the best of me. One thing i realized is with this book, you can add to the me and so you can have the best of mexico, the best of mediocrity, the best of meningitis. Reporter sedaris jokes have never been for everyone. But sometimes based on the crowds, you feel like its close. Millions have found Something Special in the way hes been writing about his life and family for the last 30 years. Hes produced 11 bestselling books, including barrel fever, naked and lets explore diabetes with owls. Most of those books have been followed by soldout concert tours across the country. At last nights signing, i was approached by a teenaged girl who asked me to autograph what was, without question, the ugliest tshirt i had ever seen in my life. Reporter and even the occasional commencement address. Choose one thing to be terribly, terribly offended by. This as opposed to the dozens or possibly hundreds that many of you are currently juggling. Reporter do you prefer performing and touring or writing . I always think of performing and touring as my reward for writing. Its my reward for being alone. Do you miss touring . I miss it so much. I miss even the delayed flights and crummy hotels. I wonder if its possible to die from lack of attention . I say to my boyfriend, just applaud for me. Im going to walk into the room and i want you to applaud. I just miss it so much. I miss attention. Reporter sedaris early work focused mostly on his childhood. He was born in upstate new york and raised in North Carolina. His mother, who battled alcoholism died when sedaris was in his early 30s. Seven years ago his sister tiffany died by suicide. A story included in the best of me which he says is his favorite because he got a chance to share the toll of her mental illness. A sedaris tradition of rarely holding back feelings about family. He calls his father, just shy of 100 and recently recovered from a neardeath experience, cold and mean. My father is 97. This is what people say. Aw. Like that. Aw, youre so lucky. And so my father cant be visited now in his assisted living center. So i write him letters. And then i talked to him awhile ago. He said i got those last two letters. You sure didnt have anything to say. And i thought, who else is writing you . Nobody else is writing you letters. Thats how i know he was better. You know, that he could just be mean. I thought, hey, dads back. Does your family like you . Well, i bauts thought them a house so they better like me. I mean, i think sometimes people got the idea like, oh, im glad im not in your family. When i write something about my family, its always something they know is funny. You dont do social media. I have a Facebook Page but ive never looked at it. And i think i have a twitter account, ive never looked at that either. And i think it makes me a happier person. Reporter this collection of essays represents a small body of his work and will likely again hit the best seller list. But these days theres Something Else sedaris says he wants to be remembered for. When hes not in new york, he and his partner are at their home in the english countryside where sedaris picked up some work as a volunteer. I was out riding my bike one day and saw a guy picking up rubbish. I said, what are you doing . He said im picking this up. I said are you paid . He said, no it drives me crazy. I can do that. I started doing it that very day. Reporter the town recently named a dump truck in his honor. I usually spend when im in england between 4 and 8 hours a day picking up trash on the side of the road. Reporter and whats what you want the David Sedaris legacy to be . Id be happy if thats it. It gives me an incredible sense of accomplishment. I think its more worthwhile than anything else i do. Pretty cool. 4 to 8 hours a day picking up trash on the side of the road. David sedaris hates this word awesome, but he is awesome. I just want to do this for him. Yes there you go, david. Weve been reading them, the whole family since the 90s and still do. The writing has gotten more serious and more emotional, so its been interesting to watch that journey for him. Yeah. I hate litterbugs. Im all the way. I am coming over. After the pandemic working together. Im out there picking up trash. And there we go. And they are hovering just over the horizon. Up next, the flying car may be picking you up sooner than you think. Well take a look. Thats coming up. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. Leah cohen worked and lived in Southeast Asia to pursue her cooking passions. After returning she opened pig and cow a hugely successful restaurant here in new york city. Shes out with a cookbook. Lemongrass and lime. A tribute to her parents and a guide for home chefs who crave big, bold flavors. Its coconuts time. Yes. Have you ever made fresh coconut milk . I have not. Really, i like using a cleaver because it has a nice weight to it. And the exterior of this coconut is very hard so you want something heavy to kind of crack through it. Reporter theres Nothing Better than starting a dish segment with coke nuts and cleavers. Nice. But before we get too far with homemade coconut milk, leah cohen wants us to know this. Cooking thai food at home or Southeast Asian food in general, does not have to be intimidating. There are often big, very spicy flavors. So start with something simple like chicken adobo. Every filipino is judged on their adobo, whether its chicken or pork. Reporter it has these five basic ingredients soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, garlic and bay leaves. Get a little more adventurous and move to papaya salad with long beans and dried shrimp or mussels in a pineapple curry broth or these ridiculous riotta doughnuts. All of the dishes are found in cohens homage to Southeast Asian cuisine lemongrass and lime. We cant necessarily travel right now so if i can make them feel like theyre in these countries that was the goal of the photos in the cookbook. Reporter cohens mother is from the philippines but leahs ascension to star chef was hardly preordained. You grew up the daughter of two dentists. Do i have great teeth . You do, actually. Most people in my family went the doctor, dentist route aside from me and my brother but they are like, i want to say ten dentists in the family. It was definitely the path less chosen being a chef. No one in my family really was a professional cook. My grandmother was a Home Economics teacher, so i guess thats kind of maybe where i got, you know, the cooking bug. Why Southeast Asian cuisine for you . I just found the food so fascinating and the flavors so bold and intimidating at the same time. I felt connected to that part of the world. I like the way you talk about breakfast in the book and that its such a different breakfast is such a different concept in Southeast Asia than it is here. There are not specific dishes that you would necessarily eat just for breakfast. Like we think of cereal and all that stuff. But in the philippines, for example, they eat like rice, dried fi rules necessarily for breakfast although i try to make more breakfasty, brunchy items for that chapter. Also in the book, lumpia shanghai. Lumpia. And im dipping this in its a sweet chili sauce. Its not spicy at all. Perfect. Thank you. And the bangkok fire made with chile infused whisky. Cheers. Cheers. Oh, yeah, that does have heat. But for the moment, back to the coconuts. When you pick one, you want it to feel heavy. That means that there is a lot of liquid inside and that will make more coconut milk. Coconut milk sounded great to us, so cohen let us take a whack at it. Yeah. Perfect. Youre a pro. Look at that. See . Felt aggressive. Yeah. Its a good way to get your anger out, i think. In a good way. Totally. Its therapeutic. That may be something we all need in these times. Cohens restaurant in new york city, pig and cow, is open during the pandemic, but for takeout only. She hopes her cookbook will inspire people to make some outside of the box creations at home that they might not try otherwise. Though for cohen, this accomplishment is bittersweet. I was really struck by the dedication in your book. Yeah. So unfortunately, in april i lost my father to covid. And so i was able just in time to change my dedication because originally it was dedicated to my son, but my father was my biggest fan, and so i wanted to make sure that everyone knew how proud i was of him just like they knew how proud he was of me. And you talk about his unconditional love. Yeah, he was probably the most positive person ive ever met. He like knew the secret to life. He really just enjoyed life. He knew how to push people to do great things without being overly annoying and on top of you. I love the way she talked about her dad. Oh, yeah. You were choked up, too. I was. Its emotional. We thank her for talking about all of that, and we thank her for the coconut lesson. You didnt bring us coconuts. I was going to bring the machetes and coconuts. They banned me from doing that.
