How to stop them when half the Police Department has been suspended. We need to bring somebody else in to assist. And pushback against the plan to have drivers foot the bill for barts fiscal cliff. Saving a giant. How a group in Sonoma County is trying to protect a 3,000yearold tree. The tree like that gives us the sense of awe, right . And that sense of awe is really important. Thanks for joining us this sunday, im brian hackney. Im ann andrea nakano. An suv in the river. This is the aftermath following the wild side show at the antioch marina parking lot. The marina is just a block away from the Police Department. Residents and Business Owners tell da lin theyre fed up. Reporter hours after the side show, we can still smell the burnt rubber. There are tire marks all over the parking lot. Well come back to this car shortly. Officers responded to multiple crashes involving cars leaving the side show and fleeing from antioch police. Im not surprised. Not surprised, but sad. Reporter the Business Owner said side shows happened at the antioch parking lot every weekend. The latest happens on sunday around 3 00 in the morning. Its frustrating, hopeless, and a lot of aspects because we dont know, you know, what we can do as we have gone to our leaders. Weve gone to nothing that will get done. Reporter investigators say the white car plowed into the black car at the high speed. The white car also sheared off the fire hydrant. Paramedics transported the innocent female driver in the black car to the hospital. But police say thats the driver of the white car who was arrested after being treated. They believe he was one of at least 50 cars that were spinning donuts in the parking lot. And they took part as they crashed into the harbors office, causing water to shoot into the air. The suv struck a large concrete garbage can. Driver ran away. Police also found a suburban in the river at the end of the dock. They say it was a part of the side show. Unclear if it was stolen. Workers towed the suv out. No body inside. Something has to be done because of businesses like mine. Reporter and kat think says they dont care. The Police Department is a block away. This is a badge of honor for people to do it this directly in front of the Police Department and that needs to stop. Talking to city staff about adding rubber barriers in the parking lots to prevent side shows. He is also asking the city to request help from the chp and Alameda County sheriffs department. They dont have enough patrol officers. If you look at the system with 31 officers to patrol and the 24hour operation, the math does not add up. Reporter kathy hopes help comes soon. Maybe getting a gate like at the Richmond Marina where you have to pay to get in. Reporter there is a law that finds drivers and impounds their cars. Now antioch is looking at a new ordinance that would cite spectators. The other top story today is that heat outside. A little bit warmer than it was yesterday. 100 degrees for a lot of inland spots. We went out five to six degrees. Before we cool back down, we just need to take stock of what weve done out there so far today. Well look at the hottest parts of the bay that really felt this today more than others. Its suppose to be hot, but you and everyone else on here actually made it up to 101. We can watch the numbers for the bottom line there and made it up to 100 in santa rosa and 100 in pleasanton and antioch. Its kind of a nice symmetry there. If we look at everybody else on here, these are current numbers. So right now its 78 in hayward and 93 in santa rosa. One other issue about today. The air quality is not all that pleasant. And this is one of the places that is reading air quality that is good, but there is some smoke coming our way from that fire in southwestern oregon. So if you can smell it, youre breathing it more than what you want, and thats certainly a part of the haze for why all the skies dont look pretty today. There is more good news than this. And for now, brian, back to you. Trains will be slowed down between orinda and pitsburg line between dublin and pleasanton on the blue line. Crews are making progress in contra costas county. Traffic is being detoured starting at the state route 4 interchange in hercules. We want to thank everybody and for your patience. We know it is a long detour. But the project is coming up real well. Look for the highway to be much safer and smoother. It will be a smoother ride as we would hear about that section a lot. And the closure will end tomorrow at 5 00 in the morning. And eastbound 80 will also be closed on august 18. More closures are scheduled throughout september. A group of state lawmakers are raising concerns over a bill that looks to increase tolls on many of the bridges in the bay area, saying it will fairly impact mostly lower income residents. The toll increases would float Public Transportation Services Like bart. Senator scott wiener is a sponsor of the bill and says with more of your money, those transit systems could hit a fiscal cliff. But skeptics of the plan says raising tolls would hurt low income commuters who have no choice, but to drive. Analysis of bridge toll users show that close to 60 of the drivers come from just three east bay counties, alameda, contra costa, and solano. Many of them commute into the city because they cannot afford to live there. Several lawmakers sent a letter to the governor, voicing their concerns over the proposed toll hike as they say it would disproportionately affect low income drivers who are already struggling to afford the current toll price, and that it doesnt offer longterm solutions. The bill was passed by the Senate Earlier this year. And it is now currently making its way through the assembly. In other news, conflicting stories about january 6 coming out today. Donald trump was indicted for allegedly trying to stop the certification of the 2020 election. But one of his attorneys said trump was just trying to pause the certification. And that is not what the former Vice President says. The Vice President will be our best witness. What i said is the ultimate ask of Vice President pence was to pause the count and allow the states to weigh in. That was my statement. Thats not what happened. From some time in the middle of december, the president began to be told that i had some authority to reject or return votes back to the states. I had no such authority. I stand by the facts as they occur. Trump and pence are just two of 12 candidates running for the republican nomination. The first Republican Debate is scheduled for august 23. A violent weekend across multiple states and there have been several Mass Shootings in the last 48 hours. Some of them turning deadly. A shooting last night in washington, d. C. Leaves three People Killed and two others injured. Police are looking for answers to this deadly shooting. We are here again tonight on the scene of another senseless act of violence. We are asking you, the community, to please provide us with any information that you may have. Police say it is possible more people may have been injured. No word on the motive and no arrests made in that case so far. In rochester, new york, two different crime scenes that police say did not appear go connected. At least five people were shot including one man who later died at the hospital. So far no word on any arrests there. And deputies in texas are searching for a gunman who opened fire inside of a nightclub. Local deputies say at least seven people were shot and taken to the hospital. This happened about 12 miles north of the texasmexico border. It has been 78 years since the u. S. Dropped the atomic bomb on hiroshima, killing at least 70,000 and 140,000 people. Our remembrance was held at the hiroshima peaceful memorial. A second bomb was dropped four days later, killing from 40,000 to 70,000. Survivors of the attacks and hiroshimas mayor continue to push for a nuclear arms ban, especially after russias invasion of ukraine. Its a tree that stands out among giants. The effort to protect this had ancient survivor and the redwood forest around it. And somehow it survived. And somehow through salolonpas lidococaine flex. A susuper thin, flexible p h with maxaximum ototc strengthth lidocainee ththat contoururs to the b by to relelieve painn riright where it hurts. And did d we mentionon, it re, really stiticks . Salolonpas, itss good medidi. Welcome back. An opportunity in the north bay to preserve what many think is the largest living brentwood tree. John ramos traveled up the Russian River to bring us the story of the tree and the remarkable resilience of the redwood forest. Reporter it may not look like it now, but 150 years ago, this redwood forest near guerneville was clear cut all the way down to the ground. But one tree survived, and it may be providing inspiration that can be the salvation of all these trees. People visit the town of guerneville to enjoy the fun of the rushing river, but its the backdrop of majestic redwood trees that gives it its beauty. So as he walks through the forest, jeff stumps name is true to the setting because the huge tree stumps he passes are evidence of the clearcut logging that went on here in the 1800s. It would have been remarkably different. I know it affected people back then even because, you know, people started thinking about how to do things differently. Reporter even now the ancient trees live on. Other full sized redwoods have sprouted out of their stumps and roots, carrying on a resilience that is simply breathtaking. This is what tay call a fairy ring. You see how these trees are ringing in this spot . And this was a giant redwood that stood here. Probably the size of that opening. Reporter its hard to imagine a tree that massive. Most of the current trees are a century or two old. But there is one that stands out, literally. This is the clar tree measuring 278 feet tall with a diameter of 16 feet. It is said to be the tallest tree in Sonoma County and almost certainly the oldest. With estimates around 2,000 years. Its constantly, you know, growing. But 140 years ago, it was a spectacularly beautiful tree. And somehow it survived . Somehow through all of that, what happened here, it survived. Reporter no one knows why it was the only tree left standing. But its existence, its persistence, is inspiring an effort to preserve it and the forest around it. The lands owner, the Timber Company called rmb family trust has agreed to sell the 394acre forest to the save the Redwoods League for 6. 5 million. The money must be raised by september 29, and the conservationists are hoping that a tree that was alive during the roman empire will help them do it. I think were lucky. Were lucky because a tree like that gives us a sense of awe, right . And that sense of awe is real important in the work that we do. Reporter once the money is raised and the land is purchased, it will be donated to the county for preservation and eventually the creation of a new park, so the public can experience its majestic beauty. If you want more information about the fundraising drive, you can go to savetheredwoods. Org. And now weve got today, mr. Cool or mr. Cooling. [ laughter ] yeah, tomorrow, were going to take about 5 degrees off of it. Tuesday is the day. By tuesday, its like for some of us, 20 degrees cooler than today. Why . I mean youve seen this, youve seen this. Ill show you why. Okay. And that strong onshore flow that will return on tuesday. Here is what it looks like the next several days. Our camera looking out over contra costa county. Always the example for the biggest swings in temperatures. It was 100 degrees here today. Tomorrow, youre still close to that. Youre going to 98 tomorrow. Some other spots will come down more. A 4 to 5degree cool down tomorrow max. Here is the day. Most of the rest of the sevenday forecast will be well behaved, but you will feel this difference by tuesday. Thats when the temperatures have come down significantly for everybody, not just for concord. We will see how this will play out. And the other thing i wanted to talk about is the air quality before i get into the rest of the story. We would take a look at oakland on the top of the newscast and that one place right now that is actually reading moderate air quality and that is from the official air quality sensors that the epa administers the high quality stuff. Theyre monitored by technicians. Those are probably the most trustworthy meters that youll find. Everybody else is reading green. If we look at this in a different way, im sure youre familiar with purple if you have gone through any of the smoke seasons with us over the years past. Maybe you got familiar with that and being able to access those and well share them online too. And the low cost air sensors. A lot more of them. So you can get a slightly different picture. A broader view. Most of them are still green. You see them . Theyre small. But the little dots in there. There are plenty of places in the bay that are reading moderate. Its not just that one official sensor at oakland. So the cue is if you step outside, you know it looks hazy. If you can smell smoke, youre breathing more than what you want. Go easy if you can smell smoke. All right, now watch the point source for it right there. Here comes the other one and that flat fire. Thats where the smoke is coming from if youre wondering. And they only got 30 contained. And as long as they stay like that, we will keep getting some smoke and that there wasnt a whole lot today from that flow and you barely saw any of the clouds. Lets skip ahead and watch the clouds and that we wont be like the total gray out for everybody. There is not a big difference tomorrow, but watch on tuesday. Here is how we change. And that is how you cool down 20 degrees. By tuesday, that flow has returned so significantly that we will all wake up to the skies on Tuesday Morning and it will stay gray for a part of the day and everybody will get sunshine. When you look under the clouds on tuesday, and this is that day that we pulled out to show you which ones will stand out the most and tomorrow is cooler than today, but still a hot day as we started to move in the right direction tomorrow and it is really tuesday and the rest of the week. So your numbers, oakland, right around 70 for most of this. The north bay valleys, youre on top and on the bottom. Youll be in the low 80s for the north bay valley. And san jose right around 80. When we look at the east bay communities, 98 tomorrow and then mid80s the whole way through and nothing too crazy. Giants and as, one more time. That and whats on the mind of the best pass catching back in the nfl . Niners, baback in the e day, snsneaker dropops meant gettining online t to waitit in line. Now wiwith xfinityty mobile. Baseball up top and lets get to the as and the giants. A great one for the fans. The bay bridge series finale. Not a part of it, sent down to aaa sacramento. Schmidt, a hot start, but his batting average dropped to barely over. 200. Now to the game in oakland, you can see the sun was an issue, yeah. Pick it up in the third. Giants loaded them up against luis medina. This would tie up the game at three. The giants led the game by as much as 63. 63 and normally that would be enough for allstar alex cobb. But this is the bay bridge series. Stuff like like nick allen happens. Allen smashed his second home run of the game. Cobb gave up five earned runs over 5 1 3 innings, but the giants bullpen wasnt much better. Caught in the jam in the 6th inning. A base hit into left field. Drove in two. The as took the lead. Cobb could only watch from the dugout in disgust. So the as bullpen, can they hang on . Here is the answer. Yeah. Brandon crawford grounded out to first. And trevor may got the save. And thats the ball game. The as won it 86 to complete the two game sweep at the coliseum. And so the giants and the as will split the Season Series at 22. A shocker from the womens world cup. The u. S. Is out. It is not that it will happen, but its the way that it happened. This was it for the u. S. The knockout round. United states in sweden, numbers one out of three in the world. Scoreless in the 89th minute. A missed chance here for alex morgan, the header denied for the former cal bear as they outshot sweden 229, but got nothing for it. The penalty kick, sophia smith for the win. The shot went wide for the former star. Later in the shootout, sweden for the win. The save looked good twice. And wait a minute. Look at the replay. That ball was over the line. The goal was legit, and sweden upset the United States 54 on penalty kicks. Two time defending champions are out. The earliest exit for the u. S. And womens world cup history. And we just lost that world cup by a millimeter and its emotional and probably my last game ever and having the honor to win that crest, which is just tough and that i feel like it is an emotional time. And so it absolutely sucks. I mean the penalties are the worst. And pivot to the ice with the best defenseman. Was traded by the sharks to the penguins in that deal that will involve the montreal canadiens. They get three players in that 2024 first round pick. And golf, final week of the regular season and a dramatic finish for justin thomas. Needed it to make the playoffs. Oh. Thomas couldnt believe it. It fell to the ground and left it all on the line as they needed to make the top 70 and finished 71st. But much better week for the former major winner who made this for one of the birdies on the day and lucas glover is your winner at the windham championships and the daughter in tears at the 18th green. Even dad had some water works. And tonight on game day, well go big on the 49ers. A chat with christian mccaffrey, one playoff game in his five plus seasons in carolina, loving life with a San Francisco team that has been built to win now. Here is a clip. To be able to come to this team specifically to work with these coaches and to work with these players, the journey they have been on before i got there, it is special, you know, you could see it. And it fel
