Takes her job seriously, you better be prepared and she holds herself with dignity. We are taking a look at how senator feinstein changed American Life for more than five decades in public service. Juliette goodrich leads the coverage from capitol hill where there has been an outpouring of emotion for those who worked alongside her. Reporter so much support, you know, here we are inside the Nations Capital and you walk the hallways and you hear people talking not about a Government Shutdown or republicans or democrats, what about senator Dianne Feinstein. You hear the words like trailblazer, confidant, friend. She was all of the above. So, in washington, d. C. , flags are flying at half staff, flowers are brought to the outside of her office as we speak. Today is a day of mourning as people knew her and worked with her each and every day. Lets take a look back at her remarkable career that started in San Francisco and ended up here in washington, d. C. I dont think the board has really done their homework when it comes to taxation. Dianne feinsteins storied political career began in 1969 when she was elected to the citys board of supervisors, she would ultimately become the first woman to serve as the boards president. It would be one of many firsts for feinstein, in 1992, she made history becoming the first woman to represent california in the u. S. Senate. In that same year, she would help Barbara Boxer win the other senate seat, in what became known as the year of the woman, setting up this iconic moment. I will never forget the night we made history. We were at the fairmont hotel, waiting to see what would happen and Dianne Feinstein was a shoe in and i was certainly the underdog. Reporter the retired senator, Barbara Boxer would serve with feinstein until the end of her term. When the two of us made it, two jewish women from the bay area, it was history. Reporter they knew because of their gender they had to fight even harder. These guys thought women couldnt understand the gun issues, couldnt understand missile issues, couldnt understand defense issues. Reporter while her time in the senate has most recently defined her epic career what are your thoughts on what it means for a country to have women serve in meaningful numbers on the federal bench lester mark reporter it was before her time in washington that was testified with violence and tragedy. In 1958 as the supervisor, she was there when the citys mayor and a trailblazing city supervisor were murdered by another supervisor. The mayor and supervisor have been shot and killed. Reporter she would guide and calm a shattered city. I became mayor as a product of assassination, of the mayor being killed, and the first openly gay official being killed by a colleague. She became that way, just very calm and measured. Reporter feinstein would take over as San Franciscos mayor, the first woman to hold the post, she would win the job twice in two elections as she earmarked more money for a. I. D. S. Research in San Francisco , then president reagan did for the entire country. Feinstein would make an unsuccessful run for governor in 1990 but even in defeat, she was resilient and went on to become californias first female u. S. Senator in 1992. Electing the senators was a big deal, and in 1992, we elected two women senators at the same time and that is also going to be a very important part of her legacy. Reporter in 2018, she went up against then state Senate President , kevin daily on. Californias Democratic Party through their support behind him, who was the more progressive candidate, democrats made feinsteins age an issue. The progressives were dissatisfied with her practical orientation. Dianne feinstein always made a point of working with republicans to get things done. They werent happy about it. Reporter in march of 2022, Dianne Feinstein would lose her husband, a crushing loss. I called her and we talked, and she said to me, barbara, i didnt know how much my life would change in my world would change, how much i depended on him and cared about him, and she was really suffering from that loss. Reporter the loss of her husband coupled with issues at 89, she announced her retirement in february, 2023. My husband has died and that affected the decision. Reporter senator boxer said feinstein never viewed her post in the senate as a job, she viewed it as a mission. It was her lifes work, and she has offered so much advice to so many people but there is one bit of advice that i held onto and that she shared with some young women starting out their careers and her advice to young women who wanted to follow in her footsteps, she was very clear about saying prepare yourselves so many times, talented young women go for the top first, you cant do that. Start young, earn your spurs, dont drop out, take defeat after defeat, but you keep going , she truly meant that and she walked her walk. At the memorial here, they are working on plans and we will continue to keep you informed on that as well. Coming up, we are going to have complete coverage on her history in San Francisco and here in washington, d. C. , and i had the chance to talk with congressman, Eric Swalwell about her career and her life. You may not have agreed with her decisions as a politician but you cannot deny her commitment to her constituents, to her state and her country, and she was such a servant for the people, and also for other women, she knew the role she was playing and what a role model she was for so many women who wanted to enter politics or the professional space. She was remarkable. And just for yourself, knowing that she served three decades in that building, the u. S. Capital, what was it like for you today to walk through the halls and walk into the rotunda . Reporter that is a great question, i was walking into a building that was dealing with a Government Shutdown, so they had just started to vote. That wasnt the conversation here. Today, it was about senator Dianne Feinstein and yes, they had business as usual and a very important topic to tackle but they only wanted to share about their interactions with her. Democrats and republicans, quite remarkable. That really speaks to her legacy and the impact she had on that building. Thank you very much. Juliet will anchor our coverage from washington, d. C. , that is coming up tonight at 6 00 and 7 00. And inside San Francisco city hall, a look at a statue of senator feinstein. The current mayor, london breed spoke today about feinsteins impact, bringing the city together after the assassination of the mayor and supervisor. She was a beacon of hope and inspiration during a very dark and tragic time, which cemented her legacy as an extraordinary leader for our city and for our country. Dianne feinstein never stopped being mayor. People are honoring the late senator across the bay area from city hall to an Elementary School in the sunset to outside the late senators home of pacific heights. That is where leslie joins us, the loss goes well beyond the political sphere. Reporter i have talked to so many people today and they shared their favorite memories, moments with the senator but the constant thing was they were just so grateful that she never forgot about them or anybody in the bay area. And as we are talking, there are people coming up and dropping off flowers. That has been the thing everywhere. I went to city hall today to get a look at what that looks like. Reporter tabatha romero says she has been a bay area resident her entire life and senator Dianne Feinstein has always been a constant for her. I really appreciated knowing that no matter where she was, she knew that San Francisco was home. Reporter on friday morning when she found out the longestserving female senator in history passed away at the age of 90, she was devastated. Is heartbreaking, i feel like somebody who is in the bay area, i feel like we were all shocked. It is a very hard time knowing that somebody who was such a leader in the community passed away after many years. Reporter many in the bay area made their way to the fourth floor of city hall to pay their respects to the senator, writing personal notes to her. I thanked her for everything she did for the city of San Francisco in particular. Reporter Dianne Feinstein Elementary School, in a statement, they tell us our school which originally opened in 1922 as parkside elementary was renamed Dianne Feinstein Elementary School in 2006. To recognize her historic contributions locally and nationally. We are immensely grateful to senator feinstein who participated in the enrichment of our school over the years. Including generous donations to support the elaborate technology, social Emotional Learning and much more. During her visits, she especially loved reading to students. Tabatha says she has these final words for the senator. Knowing that you did that, that speaks volumes and i hope you know that the rest of this generation is honoring you for the rest of their lives. I want to also add, it feels like everyone lost a Family Member today and like i said, people are still bringing flowers and when we were at city hall today, we ran into the mayor who was writing her a personal tribute to the senator, but she has decided to keep that private for now. Thank you very much, reporting and pacific heights. And taking a look at the white house right now, flags are flying at half staff in honor of Dianne Feinstein. President biden spoke about her Lasting Impact on the country. She was a historic figure, trailblazer for women and a great friend. Diane made her mark everywhere from security, the environment, gun safety, protecting civil liberties. We are going to miss her dearly. Reporter on capitol hill, it was a day full of emotional tributes for senator Dianne Feinstein. We have a look at how feinstein is being remembered by her fellow lawmakers. She was seen as the moderate who could reach across the aisle and even challenge members of her own party, she was respected by politicians from across the nation and today a moment of silence led by her friend and congressional leader, nancy pelosi. Her legacy will be a long one that we will all be inspired by. But today, at this time, just hours since her passing, rather than talk about her, let us just pray that she rest in peace. The rest of the california delegation by her side and with that, everybody stood up for a moment of silence, we also heard from senator alex padilla. Throughout her career, latino civilians could work alongside her to keep up the american dream. And Kevin Mccarthy remembers the two coming together to pass a historic water bill despite their opposing views. I believe at the end of the day, the trailblazing of the first elected woman mayor come even coming from a different party, aspired women from both sides of the aisle, to have their voices heard. Feinstein was reelected five times and in the 2012 election, she received 7. 86 million votes, that was the most popular votes received by any u. S. Senate candidate in history. She was loved by so many. Still ahead, more than 25 years after tupac shakur was gunned down in las vegas, and arrest in the case. After a disappointing season, the giants are making a major change at the top. The big announcement. Breezy and cool across the bay area today and the clouds have rolled in, the rain showers will happen fairly soon, im tracking it in the first alert forecast. And a look at the State Capitol where flags are at half staff in honor of senator Dianne Feinstein, we will have more on the tough decision for Governor Newsom as he places a new senator. Tupac shakur died when he was shot four times while eating a boxing match on the Las Vegas Strip in 1996. He died six days later at the age of 25. Investigator said davis was the ringmaster in a plot to kill tupac shakur in retaliation for a gang attack on his nephew. He is expected to make a Court Appearance next week when a date for the trial will be set. We know the name of the utility worker who died in the trench collapse in San Francisco yesterday, Javier Romero was killed after he became buried under eight feet of dirt and debris. Romero who was from alameda was working as a private contractor to upgrade the citys sewer line and open divisadero street. Firefighters tried to rescue him but after several hours he was pronounced dead at the scene. The California Division of Occupational Safety and health is still investigating what caused the trench to collapse. Lets get a look from San Francisco right now, after a disappointing season, the giants are not wasting any time aching some big changes. Just a little over two weeks ago, the giants held one of the National League wildcard spots, and today they made a change to the manager, the team fired gabe kapler this afternoon with three games left in the season. He had a franchise record 107 wins in 2021 but the team failed to reach the postseason in his other three seasons and this week, players spoke out about the clubhouse atmosphere that was too lax. Correa will take over as the interim manager for now and we are hearing from the president of baseball operations later in sports. Thank you so much. In our virtual weather center, taking a look at what you need to know as we head into the weekend, things are looking pretty good in the bay area at the moment. Theres the cloud cover that has rolled in over downtown oakland. Lets take a look at the headlines as we get into the last day of september. Cloudy skies overhead, a few showers are starting to move in. Cool and unsettled weather on saturday, its not going to be a total washout but be flexible of any outdoor plans. Then we will really warm up as we head through next week. First, take a look at where the showers are right now, up to the north. A couple of showers making a run to the Sonoma County coast already. The first wave has a tendency to fall apart but we are going to be tracking more showers as we head into tonight. The best chance is rolling in south of the golden gate, so maybe wetting down the Santa Clara Valley a little bit early in the day and then more showers developing through the rest of saturday. It is not going to rain everywhere all the time and the rain showers are going to be light and fairly brief but still be flexible with any outdoor plans just in case. And as a resume out, you can see the skies clearing out as we head into the second half of the weekend. How much rain are we talking about . Not very much, a few hundredths of an inch of rain, specific numbers in each city, just want to give you an overall flavor of what to expect and its very little, if you really hit the jackpot with this system you might get close to 1 10 of an inch of rain, the best chance is going to be in the santa cruz mountains. It is going to be a potential shower if you are heading out saturday and sunday is looking just fine. Almost 70 degrees with more sunshine through the day. The cloud cover that rolled into they did put a little dent in the amount of solar power generated across the bay area. Cloud cover is going to linger tomorrow but we will make up for lost time on sunday, back to nearly full sunshine on sunday afternoon with more of the same next week. The wind has been noticeable throughout the day, those will remain elevated for the rest of this evening and into tonight, somewhat blustery start to the day on saturday but the wind will gradually relax further into saturday, especially into the afternoon. Lets take a look at the high temperatures in the forecast for tomorrow, it is going to be another cool day overall, the coolest we will see for a while. Near 70 degrees in the Santa Clara Valley, well see upper 60s on the map overall. Temperatures in the east bay only climbing up to around 70. Temperatures around that they mostly in the mid to upper 60s and low 60s along the coast. Temperatures further to the north are going to climb maybe a little bit farther into the 70s with more sunshine trying to peek through. Keep an eye on that trend as we head into the extended timeframe, lets take a look at the sevenday forecast. Here is the outlook for inland parts of the bay area, theres that warmup really kicking in by the latter half of next week. Low 90s inland. A similar trend but not quite as violent of an upswing in those readings but around 80 degrees, even in San Francisco. Especially by thursday of next week. Temperatures along the coast are always warming up. By wednesday, thursday and friday and for coastal parts of the bay area, that almost qualifies as a heat wave. We will take it. Thank you. Still ahead, Governor Newsom under pressure to make a quick decision about senator feinsteins replacement, why he may be in a nowin situation. It is a very big deal. It is important that
