In zip ties and you know, the whole situation, the entire time, was very calm, he was cooperative. Jose martinez has been digging into the Surprising New development in this case. He joins us with those details. Rose . Me tell you something, according to a federal complaint against Joseph Emerson after being arrested, he told the officers that he became depressed six months ago and talked about the use of psychedelic mushrooms stating that this was the first time he took them. Reporter according to a federal criminal complaint, Joseph Emerson, the offduty Alaska Airlines pilot, tended to shut down the engines of a plane headed to San Francisco. The affidavit says emerson and the responding officer talked about the use of psychedelic mushrooms and he told the officer it was his first time taking them. We i cant imagine what he was possibly thinking because everyone knows mushrooms are hallucinogens and that is absolutely , absolutely by far no way are we supposed to, we cant even take cold medicine. For captain laura who works at a major u. S. Airline, and has over 30 years of experience as a pilot and instructor, this incident is extremely rare, because of all the regulations pilots have to go through prickly every six months, pilot medicals where they examine us extensively, physically, mentally, all aspects, and the faa has very tight, very restrictive regulations as to what we can and cant do. That includes a random alcohol and drug test , a standard set by the faa. In fact, in a statement the faa says the use of psychotropic drugs is disqualifying for certification purposes. But the captain tells me pilots dont get tested before getting on the plane, unless they are acting erratic according to the complaint, emerson was acting normal at the clock during the first half of the flight. But halfway between in portland, he told the other pilots he was okay, and through his headset before pulling the two red handles that would activate the Fire Suppression system. Dr. Jennifer, chief of staff, research and develop is that the San Francisco va medical center, says you must be careful with these drugs. Because psychedelics are not toys, and people need to , people that have no experience with taking these compounds should be trying to self medicate with them without supervision. Dr. Mitchell tells me that in contrast with other drugs, the effective psychedelics could be triggered by the experience. The effects of a psychedelic definitely are, they are dependent on what we term set and setting. And so that means that you really want to have a thoughtful, well curated space in which you do these compounds. And so when they are administered therapeutically, that is how they are administered, in these very wellintentioned spaces. Meanwhile, captain has a message to those passengers that might be worried about this incident. We dont want to develop into a situation like this. The crew handled everything excellently , i feel, and just being able to notice, hey, this isnt okay , and be able to fight him off and subdue him. But we dont want that to ever happen. Again, or have any other circumstances going forward, obviously. Jose, this is such a bizarre case, this man is an actual airline pilot. So what is Alaska Airlines doing right now . Right now they are on top of this investigation all the time. Actually via email to confirm that on a tober 22nd, emerson was removed from service and definitely, and he is not coming back to Alaska Airlines. Thanks, jose point the flight over Driverless Cars is the San Francisco has taken another turn today. The dmv suspended some of the permits for the company, cruise , and for now theyre not allowed to travel without a driver. And back of joins us now for the newsroom with what this all means for the future of Autonomous Vehicles. Reporter big blow to cruise specifically, only one of the companies that has been running Driverless Cars around the city. 1023 no longer has a permit for deploying without a driver. The dmv says the cars present an unreasonable risk to Public Safety and that cruise are misrepresented safety information. The dmv says it gave cruise steps to apply for reinstatement but no timeline for the suspension. Cruise says the dmv is looking into a crash from earlier this month involving one of its rubber taxis. Police say a different part with a human driver hit a pedestrian, then got trapped under the cruise car and dragged about 20 feet as the car tried to pull over. The human driver in the other car took off and is still at large. Cruise says its vehicle followed all safety protocols. The company also claims that stimulations after the crash shows that if the other car has been a cruise would have avoided hitting the pedestrian in the first place. Cruise statement also read in part, kwikemart teams are doing an analysis to identify potential enhancements to the avs response to this kind of extremely rare event. I spoke with an expert on adames transportation today, he says theres no reason this company should be testing their Technology Without a driver in the first place. Having a safety driver does not prevent you making progress. The safety driver does nothing, then youve got safety covered and you are still doing testing. So removing the safety driver isnt actually about safety. Removing the safety driver is about Public Perception and keeping your investors happy and things like this. Reporter before the suspension was announced, the teamsters and other labor groups rallied outside cruise s headquarters , highlighting their concerns over safety and jobs i spoke with them afterward about this decision. They say it is too little too late. These are problems that we have been warning them about for a long time. So if they would have listened to us in the first place or engaged with us, or engage with city officials before they were making those decisions, things would have turned out very differently. San Francisco City attorney sent out a statement in response to the suspension thing, we are grateful for todays action, which vindicates the significant Public Safety concerns raised by the city. He goes on to say we support the promise of this technology to improve transportation, we are urging the state to come up with a sensible measured plant for the safety based on, for the future based on safety, and performance metrics. The cpuc, they referred to, is the state agency that gave the green light earlier this year, the city is now fighting that in court. It is also important to reiterate the suspension from the dmv does not affect other Autonomous Vehicle Companies Like waymo which actually recently expanded its service to l. A. Thanks. A cross between a mini bus and a Food Bank Delivery truck, you can see them wedged against each other. This happened this morning on market and church street, San Francisco Police Say Two people were hurt, no word on who was at fault in the crash. Turning to the conflict in the middle east, the Israeli Military is still yet to launched its promised Ground Invasion of gaza, but has not let up yet on those attacks. The idf released this video today of what it said were airstrikes in gaza. Israel claims to have had hundreds of hamas targets today, killing dozens of hamas soldiers and even some commanders. This all comes as the humanitarian crisis in gaza worsens every day. A Palestinian Health Ministry Said more than 5700 people have been killed, including more than 2300 children today, israel says it will not allow any more fuel into gaza. Hospitals in gaza say they are running out of fuel needed to power their generators. Meantime, hamas is going to still have around 200 hostages released two elderly israeli women yesterday, though both of their husbands are still being held. Today, the Israeli Military airdropped leaflets over gaza asking palestinians for information about where hamas is keeping the other hostages. It has been 50 years since alcatraz became a national park. Today roughly 1. 5 Million People visit the island each year. First fortress was built on alcatraz during the gold rush. It was a military prison before being used as the famous maximumsecurity prison , and it closed in 1963. One of the speakers in todays event lives on the island as a child, when her dad worked for the prison. She was there when three prisoners escaped back in 1962. My mother met me on the stairs and she said get dressed, there has been an escape, we have to search the house. Which is kind of what you did, i think it was makework to keep the women and the children busy and everything stops, the island, people think of it as chaotic, but everything just tamps down and the boats stopped, it was late for school but i had a fabulous excuse. About 1500 prisoners served to time on alcatraz right before it became a park the island was occupied by native american activists for 19 months. Lets check in with paul. I think you had a chance to go visit alcatraz this past summer . It is a fascinating tourist attraction for i dont even called a tourist attraction, it is a piece of history. It is, but it honestly does a lot of tourist traffic, as well. Anytime someone from out of town comes to town it is one of the things they want to see and yeah, five decades as a park after all of the history beforehand. It is going to be shrouded by fog as we head to the rest of tonight. We got some big changes that are going to kick in over the next 24 hours or so, courtesy of a storm system that will be dropping into the pacific northwest, most of its energy and moisture, we will not see much of a rain chance but we are going to experience a big drop in temperatures from today into tomorrow, and another wave of cool air will follow that up for the end of the workweek as we head into the weekend. Notice that i am changing the amount of cloud cover that will put a dent into the amount of solar powered generated by the panels across the bay area, significant drop in the number on wednesday, but you saw the numbers go back up on thursday indicating the return of full sunshine for the roughly 11 hours of daylight that we could possibly get sunshine as we approach the end of october. Lets check out future cast, you could see the clouds starting to float in as we head into to mark, smore clouds and sunshine by tomorrow afternoon but the rain just kind of falls apart. There are other forecast models that are little more optimistic in terms of the amount of showers that could its way to the bay area, not buying into that scenario. I think well see if you sprinkles in the north bay otherwise we should day dry. Doesnt have access to much moisture, the clouds move out tomorrow night into thursday, plenty of sunshine in the next wave of cool air will send some cloud cover into the bay area on friday, but i dont think it is going to be overcast, just some clouds and sunshine as we finish off the workweek. Im going to be a rainmaker but it will be a little bit of a snow maker for the high sierra. Had a significant event, were talking about an inch or two of snow, not enough to complicate travel on u. S. 50 or i80, but just the beginning of those snow chances that will continue to ramp up as we head into the next few months. Towards downtown from treasure isl
