KRON KRON 4 News At 5pm July 12, 2024

Thanks for joining us tonight at 5 oclock im ken wayne and im pam moore, a grim milestone for the United States tonight as the death toll from the coronavirus tops 200,000 that number is by far the highest confirmed death toll from the virus in the world, according to Johns Hopkins this to just take even more stark when you consider the United States has less than 5 of the worlds population but more than 20 of the reported deaths. Solemn comparison the number of dead in the u. S. Is equivalent to a 9. 11 attack every day for 6 to 7 days. And its roughly equal to the entire population of Salt Lake City here in the bay area the news is more positive as it pertains to covid19 the covid numbers and 3 bay area counties have improved so much that the state has moved those counties and the purple tear to the red to year that allows many indoor businesses to reopen at limited capacity, but only 2 of the 3 counties is moving forward from course and kerman live for us in San Mateo County to explain dan. Well many of the businesses here on san bruno avenue will be reopening indoors. San mateo county is one of those 3 counties moving ahead immediately as his Solano County but alameda putting the brakes on they want to make sure that their numbers hold so they are not moving forward. Yet. These chairs have been collecting dust inside the nations loft wine bar and restaurant for months, but now Solano County will allow Indoor Dining once again at 25 capacity. Very excited about the opportunity to bring people back indoors Restaurant Owners say adding a partial reopening indoors to the patio dining. Well make a difference. A lot is restaurants we can do about 50 of our business outdoors if we can add another 25 indoors. Mathematically that could put us somewhere around 75 . And we can do ok 75 . The change comes because the state has move Solano County from the purple tier to the red tier because its covid numbers have improved. We have fewer cases being reported every day we have a lower percentage of people being tested who are positive. We have fewer people being hospitalized. These are all good things because they show that the outbreaks impact on us is decreasing and thats what we all want the change from purple, the red means in addition to Indoor Dining retail can open indoors at 50 capacity. Hair nail salons and barbershops can open with modifications museums zoos aquariums places of worship and movie theaters can open a 25 capacity indoors. And gyms and Fitness Centers can open doors at a maximum 10 of capacity. Schools may also get the green light in 2 weeks into wake schools and consider. Resuming face to face education and theyre required to its up to each district to decide whether they want to face to face and how much is that they want but at least are going to be in the position where they can resume facetoface education. And again for restaurants and those businesses as far as indoor that all starts immediately here in San Mateo County as well as Solano County Alameda County putting the brakes on theyre going to see how their numbers move over the next 2 weeks they want to make sure they stay in the red before moving any sort of reopening. Reporting live in san Bruno Dan Kerman Kron 4 news dan thank you for that report. Well tonight nail salons all across california have been given the green light to reopen indoor operations as amid this ongoing pandemic. The state Health Secretary says that although the state has relaxed the restrictions it is still up to individual counties to have the final say on whether and when salons can actually open before a nail salon can reopen though it will also still be required to meet the states reopening safety requirements and to the south bay now Santa Clara County has been in the red tier of the states reopening blueprint for 13 days now that means schools have the green light to reopen as soon as tomorrow kron fours rob fladeboe thats wrong whether that will happen. Live from san jose wrong. Strike and as of tomorrow as you know the Santa Clara County will have been off the stage watch list for a full 2 give School Districts like this one the option of opening once again for in Person Learning, but thats not likely to happen at least not right away most of the districts, particularly the larger ones are going to continue with Online Learning at least for now heres more. Willow glen high and the other schools in the 28,000 students, San Jose Unified School district. The south bays largest will not be welcoming students back to School Tomorrow despite being cleared to do so instead the district will continue with Online Learning at least through the end of december says spokesperson Jennifer Maddox because there are other things that are in the county guidelines that are still prohibited right indoor gatherings for example. And from my perspective if people cant gather indoors than it doesnt make a lot of sense to put 30 kids in a classroom together which seem similar to an indoor gathering, although some smaller private schools have already been granted waivers to resume in person classes, larger districts are holding off even though the county is a day away from being off the states monitoring list for 2 weeks, what you get is see in the next few days is every School District in dialogue with parents having a conversation about what makes sense. You know you will have different decisions being made 4 different schools a key consideration in san jose unified decision to stick with Distance Learning is the burden of being responsible for testing students for covid19 they issued a new health order last week that is requiring the Large Health Care providers to increase their testing and to make sure that its available to you. All of the citizens of Santa Clara County. We need that in order to reopen School Safely because we need to be able to isolate the cases quickly on the main thing. For those of us who want to see this option of opening schools to remain as an option is to make sure that people continue to follow the rules. So that we contain the transmission to make it so that schools have a shot at reopening in classroom instruction. Where thats appropriate. And the main reason of course that the School District have this option now is that the county is reporting some of the lowest coronavirus numbers since june right now only about 2 of people tested are coming back positive live in san jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news. Thank well, students and teachers in one east bay School District just got one step closer to returning to the classroom, however, the union that represents teachers in that district says not so fast from force has it by noon explains why. Alameda county has officially moved into the red tier of the California Department of Public Health blueprint for a safer economy. Among other things the red tier allows for School Districts in the county like oakland unified to reopen for in Person Learning after maintaining red stat is for 2 weeks. I mean i think its always positive when we hear that the cases are going down because we we dont want to see people getting sick. However, the spokesperson for the Oakland Education Association chaz garcia explains why the Teachers Union cautions any expectations of hastily returning students and teachers to a classroom said we have safety criteria that still needs to be negotiated. Agreed upon before return to he doing any in Person Learning we have to make sure that were holding. Community safety student safety. In the highest regard because as weve seen across the country and even internationally. Casey of children contracting and spreading covid have been on the rise. She says ultimately returning to class has to be in oakland specific data driven decisions. Oakland be a larger portion cases in Alameda County we really believe that it is incumbent upon us to look specifically in oakland data before we make any decisions around any in Person Instruction we should note Alameda Countys most recent health order clarified that schools must continue Distance Learning until conditions support in Person Learning. That is even if the county meets the states criteria for returning to the classroom has it made you kron 4 news. He and his crew worked to cut the fire off before it reached his community and other towns along the Russian River parmenter has operate his dozer for cal fire for many years. But this fire was different. I think its because you close all. When you lived here for 40 years. And this to know everybody in the community. And to build it. Save that for them. And not let them lose everything they had you know. That was most important to us you know his death. Save the community for what they have and what theyve worked for and. Thats what we did. Parmenter estimates that he and his crew cut 30 miles of fire line, some of them 10 dozer blades wide. His crew was not alone. He estimates another 10 to 12 bulldozer operators help cut a contingency line as a backup. And over in general mark man a rancher who also runs an Excavator Company was part of another small crew who helped cut fire lines right up against the blaze for more than a week in order to keep the myers fire burning on the coast from moving into town and east towards greenville. Theres a lot of people in our community to maybe that range from loggers to construction to. You know ranchers that have equipment and so everybody. We all care a lot about our community and and the ground that and the forest in the fields everything that we live in so we want to protect that as much as we can. And so everybody when the time we need comes we just all step up and Work Together its not hard to find places now where the fires have blackened this beautiful landscape its also not hard to find signs like this one dotting the areas that were spared giving thanks to the people who stepped up.
