ThirdParty Data Brokers probably never heard of, are collecting and selling your information and you may not even know about it. But now theres a bill going through the legislature that aims to fight this issue headon. Not everyone, though, is on board. Our capitol correspondent Eytan Wallace introduces us to the delete act. If you scrolled online shop for items or simply used an app on your phone, chances are its happened to you. Thirdparty companies known as data brokers are collecting and often sharing and selling your personal information. This is an enormous problem. Enormous problem says emory roan of privacy rights clearinghouse, a privacy rights, advocacy and education organization. He notes thirdparty companies are constantly tracking Consumer Online patterns and behaviors in hopes of finding potential customers. The goal, he says, is to target them and marketing campaigns. But thats not all your online activities certainly are being scooped up by data brokers. But its where youre going in the real world, the apps that youre using the web site that youre visiting there. Interests family connections that you your political interests, your health information. Really, you complete categories completely, you know, profiles of. Each of us are being bought and sold without your awareness by businesses that you have absolutely never heard of. Thats why he says privacy rights clearinghouse is sponsoring senate bill. 3, 6, 2, also known as the delete act. It seeks to simplify the process for any californian to quite literally get 3rd parties to delete personal information they collected on a consumer. You need to give people. Back control of their personal information. It requires the roughly 500rd Party Data Brokers in the state to formally register online here with the attorney generals office. Notice all of the brokers here on the registry. You could then go to each broker and request your information be deleted. But senator becker says that means you literally have to go to hundreds of brokers to get all of the information scrapped. That is not easy and people are not going to do it. And so thats why i call this the lead act. Its literally a onestop shop. You fill out one form to the were information, all data brokers. If this bill passes several Tech Companies in the California Chamber of commerce opposed the bill. In a statement, cal chamber said data brokers provide services to many other businesses in support of antimoney laundering, sanction compliance, cybersecurity and underwriting activities that the lead act can undermine these legitimate and necessary functions.
