Well, here in San Francisco on wednesday morning, hundreds of Students Walked out of their classrooms to protest the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. Many of these students are of error, palestinian or muslim descent. And they are calling on israel to end its attacks in gaza. I think in the short immediate ceasefire. By u. S. Media. I think that the world hear our voices our call for justice. I think its very important know whats going on. And thats something not stopped. Also today at San Francisco city hall, local leaders expressed their support for the Students Walk out. Responses have been sent to the usgs and this follows a 4. 7 quake that hit along californias north coast on monday. So even if you didnt feel the quake, you likely got an alert on your phone. That quake triggered the shake alert app and also the Early Warning earthquake system. The apted overstate the magnitude at first calling it a 5. 7 and ended up being a 4. 0. One. The usgs says that the shake alert app works with very Little Information in the first few seconds of a quake. Its meant to really give you a chance to prepare and try to stay safe. So well talk about that and get a closer look at the map as exactly where that quake was. We all got that alert. I was like, was yeah, i know we all got that alert. It is a moment where you definitely look at your phone to thankfully not hearing if there are any problems of injuries with news. But yeah, 4. 1. It was 9. 29. This morning. That gives you a little bit of a reference, but its also just about miles southsouthwest of ill 10 and the depth on this one was about 6. 7 miles. But you can see as these kind of blue lines lead out where it was felt it was felt in walnut creek. It was felt in fairfield. It was fell down in livermore. So a lot of it was east bay. I did not feel it here in San Francisco at work were down on the embarcadero. But a 4. 1 is considered a light earthquake. Believe it or not. I know some of us would argue that point. There are about 10,000 of them per year and the Energy Equivalent would be about 33,000 pounds of explosives. So obviously, as you head into those higher numbers, you see exponentially that that kind of increase is right to see like 32,000 pounds for for. But then that increases to a bigger number. Much bigger number about a Million Pounds there of explosive. You get to a 5. So thats the thing about earthquakes. Its about the exponential increase is not so much. Just the the number 8, the for the 5 as we take a live look outside. The San Francisco board of supervisors have approved new guidelines on when security guards can pull their guns. This is in response to the brown killing from earlier this year. The passing of this new proposal means a private security guards in the city of San Francisco will no longer be able to draw their guns on shoplifters if theyre protecting property. City Officials Saying its really to prevent senseless killings. All comes just 6 months after the brown kill it. This is video from april of this year when a young person by the name of banco brown was shot and killed by security while attempting to leave a walgreens with a bag of stolen goods. This law was brought forth by supervisor dean preston, who says at the time of the situation, the City Police Code allowed security to draw their guns. Not only in response to an actual threat to people, but in the defense of property, this approval would remove all and any property reference in it with Officials Saying that state guidelines and training of peace officers has previously said that drawing a weapon may escalate things, adding that the state training already limits trying guns in the situation to defend life but not property. Both sides still need to draft language to ratify this agreement tonight in lafayette, teachers and supporters will be at tonights School District meeting to call for better wages. The Teachers Union says they begin bargaining for better wages and benefits back in february. But they have been unable to reach an agreement. Tonights District Meeting will take place at the Stanley Middle School library. It starts at 5. The teachers and their supporters are expected to speak. And this is the final meeting before the 2 sides meet again forn mediation. So children will now be required to learn cursive in the classroom. Last friday, governor gavin newsom signed a bill that requires curse of to be taught from first to 6th grade. The goal is to give students the ability to read and write in cursive. So kirsten will not be a required part of school just like learning english math and social sciences. The u. S. Government officially remove curse of learning from k through 12 education in 2010. We did speak with a former coast guard member to get some tips and how to stay safe. Dont go into the ocean and try to save your friends. The coast guard has enough time dealing with one people. One person in the ocean let alone multiple people in the ocean. So your first thing never turn your back on the ocean. Always maintain your senses. And if you see somebody in trouble, pick up your phone and call 911. The coast guard is just over the hill there out here practicing all the time. I want to dive in and cool not be a bad idea . Got to be careful about its going over that with us now. Yeah, we do have some things to look out for. I know its gorgeous. Theres no doubt about it. We look at that live picture. But we have been under this beach hazard statement since yesterday. It goes through till tomorrow morning because we have a risk of sneaker waves and rip currents. Now that is not the only danger, unfortunately, tomorrow were going to turn that into a high surface advisory. So that is to say that while the coast will be cooler, its going to be a dangerous place to be. So if youre headed out there or if you have guests who are headed out there, make sure theyre aware that those waves could surge really far from the beach much farther than youre used to. They can sweep you off your feet. That water is awfully cold and you never want to turn your back to the ocean. As youre hearing that, a guy said he used to work with the coast guard, right . Hes right about that water temperature about 58 degrees right now. Just a threepoint race. Weve got a northwest swell and that is whats going to drive some of these waves to get really big tomorrow, especially those north and northwest facing beaches where we could see waves. There are upwards of about 17 feet. So very, very dangerous conditions. And anyone whos lived around here for a long, you know, you know how difficult that can be when youre out of the water and things can change quickly right now, wave heights, as you can see off of point raise about 9 feet. But again, that will be increasing as we get into tomorrow. So now you may want to head to the coast to beat the heat. I totally get that because that is certainly going to be one of our cooler spots out there today. 70s tomorrow about 80 degrees. And then by friday, of course, as across the rest of the bay, were going to cool it down and then really cool it down as we get into the weekend. But if you are headed that way, just make sure youre being safe and youre aware of the fact that those sneaker waves in particular can get real tricky, real fast. As we look outside, beautiful equate our the blue skies. Sure are nice today. Temperatures in parts of San Francisco as you head inland is 84 degrees. The National WeatherService Working on that, but at least we know its about 69 out ocean beach about 84 as you get inland in San Francisco, oakland, in the upper 70s, san jose upper 80s. Same story in livermore santa rosa. Just 90 degrees in half moon bay. 72. So you get the idea if youre in the south bay right now, if youre in the santa cruz mountains, youre already under this heat advisory. You will be under it tonight for the rest of starting 11 00pm until tomorrow at 11 00pm. And then you can see we finally do get a break from the heat on friday and then saturday and sunday.
