Not only on the Altamont Pass but also on the drive into livermore itself and then out of pleasanton, 680 southbound is slow right off the bat from the 580 interchange. It doesnt get better until you reach fremont. Lets go back to the desk. Were expecting to get more information on developing news weve been following all morning for you in oakland. Thats where a Police Officer was shot and injured. The suspect was killed early this morning. Alex savidge at the scene and the police chief is expected to speak in about 30 minutes here, right . Reporter yeah, were supposed to get more details on the investigation. Good morning. The gunman in this case, he was wanted for a Sexual Assault that happened last night here in oakland. Early this morning, two oakland Police Officers caught up with this man just outside of a house on Martin Luther king close to macarthur. The 3800 block of mlk. When Oakland Police arrived here, this man according to investigators had a rifle and opened fire on those two officers. One of those officers was hit by gunfire. That man just went through surgery and is now listed in stable can be. Those two officers immediately returned fire hitting the man with the gun and the gunman died a short time later at the hospital from those gunshot wounds. The first calls about the shooting came in at 1 30 this morning. Neighbors say they heard quite a bit of gunfire outside. As many as two dozen rubdz potentially fired rounds potentially fired. Whats unclear, if there was a verbal altercation or Exchange Prior to the shots being fired. I certainly cant go into what took place right before the shooting. I can only share with you at the time of the shooting. The suspect was armed with a rifle and shot the officer and thats when the officers returned fire. Reporter investigators have recovered the rifle used in this shooting here at the scene. And investigators are continuing to gather physical evidence on the street in this area. Oakland Police Department homicide investigators will be part of this investigation so will members of the internal ail Fairs Division and also members of the Alameda County district attorneys office. Police were trying to talk with the man, the man shot and killed, he was wanted for questioning in connection with a Sexual Assault that happened here in oakland. Were hoping to get more details on that earlier crime and this shooting involving Oakland Police when Police Sean Whent holds a News Conference at the bottom of the hour. More than 9,000 firefighters battling wildfires all across california. There are at least 21 major fires burning in the state and you look at this map. You can see there are fires from the oregon border all the way to the Cleveland National forest near san diego. Now, the gray colored flames, thats active fires now completely contained. Lightning strikes are blamed for several fires east of eureka. One of the biggest wildfires, the rocky fire in lake county. So far 24 homes have already been destroyed. 6300 homes are threatened. Thousands of people had to evacuate. Ktvu fox 2s allie rasmus in the newsroom. Whats the latest . Reporter well, dave, we do have information just in from calfire. The rocky fire has burned 60,000 acres and to give you an idea how large that is, its about 94 square niles burned. Roughly the size of the entire city of orlando. Now, the fire is now 12 contained. Thats a slight improvement. As of last night it was only 5 . But because of the size of this fire and because its burning close to homes and people, calfire says the rocky fire is their biggest priority right now. There are more than 2700 people, firefighters and personnel, working to get a handle on the rocky fire. Several things have made this fire challenging to fight. Its burning in rugged terrain. It can be only acsectioned by foot or dry and the ex accessed by foot or air and the extreme drought. Now, the fire is large enough to create its own winds which makes fighting this fire very unpredictable. The winds have been so erratic. It pushes the wind in one direction one day, the next day a different direction. Thats allowed the evacuation zone to be large. People in lake county, co lee lieu saw, colusa, be on the lookout. Reporter 12,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. There were some new evacuation orders that went into effect last night. Law enforcement officers tell people who live along ogle canyon road and Spring Valley road to get out. Now, calfires plan for today, they will continue to battle the rocky fire from the air and are moving resources from some of the other fires shown on the map. They will be moving people from those fires to combat the rocky fire and they will hope that the weather conditions remain favorable to get a handle on this. And Steve Paulson will be fauking more about the talking more about the weather coming up. An autopsy will be performed on the firefighter who died last week battling wives in the National Forest wildfires in the National Forest. He went missing thursday. His body was found friday morning. It may take five weeks to know how he died. The from frog fire started thursday. Its burned almost 4,000 acres. The wildfire,en the one burning in napa and solano county, its now 95 contained. Its the rag fire. It started on july 22nd. Its burned more than 8,000 acres and damaged several structures. At its height about 1,000 firefighters were out there battling the flames. All of the roads that were closed in the area have reopened. The cause of the fire is still tund investigation under investigation. After a fiveweek shutdown, the Greek Stock Market opened today and it fell quickly. Greeces stock market suffered heavy losses, plunging nearly 23 at the open before recovering just slightly. That may be the reason the pole snapped. Well, another whale washed up yesterday onto a bay area beach. Take a look a look. It appears to be found on esplanade beach in pacific kau. Its the third whale to wash up on the pacifica beach this year. Several others have washed up on other bay area beaches in the past couple of months. No one seems to know why. Tests will be conducted to see how this particular whale died. 7 14. I love this story. A San Francisco group is preventing ways and helping people. The team from food runners stops to take in donations of leftovers fruits, vegetables and desserts. All of that food is donated to nonprofit groups. The groups use the food to prepare fresh meals. We found people lined up at u. N. Plaza for lunch. The volunteers say its a real labor of love. Were preventing waste. Were helping feed the hungry and but the big thing were creating community. The group collects up to 17 tons of mostly organic food every day and thats enough for 5,000 peels every day meals every day. Lows on the coast are mild including San Francisco where they dont get below 60 very often it seems like. The low cloud deck in place. We still have a hurricane. Hurricane gee armow barely holding on. The good news it will weaken into a Tropical Storm status. It looks like it will north of the big island. 65, 50 tomorrow and 40, 45 throughout the week. A lot of heavy rain. High surf. But at least its weakening. Thats the good news. Want to give you a heads up. It looks like that system will fall apart but cause damage. When up get to the bay bridge toll plaza, that is backed up for a 20, 25minute delay before you even actually make it on the bridge. 580 out of oakland is not all that bad. If you are driving in the south bay, we have a little bit of a filling in here of 101, 85 and 280. Thats kind of normal traffic at this point. 880 southbound is busy between hayward and union city. It looks okay in fremont. Back to the desk. 7 31. Developing news in oakland. Thats where a Police Officer was shot and injured and a suspect was killed early in morning. Heres what bealready know the shoot happened on Martin Luther king, junior boulevard in oakland. Police say a man with a rifle shot an oakland Police Officer. Thats when Police Say Two officers fired back shooting that suspect. The Police Officer in the hospital listed in stable condition. Police say the man who shot the Police Officer was wanted for questioning in a Sexual Assault investigation. As i was waiting to hear back from the hayward Police Department on an update, he walked right in front of the lobby there of the hayward Police Department being escorted by another hayward Police Officer. He was wearing what appeared to be a white tshirt. Covered in a blanket but overall he appeared fine. He appears okay. But luckily, hes safe. A lot of people were looking for him. He was missing from los angeles. He was part of the Special Olympics from over the weekend. Want to go to video. Hes from albania. He competed in the bowling competition and was first reported missing just after 8 00 p. M. On saturday. He was last seen at or near the campus of usc. Law enforcement in l. A. Sent out an alert saying he went missing but just about 2 00 this morning, Hayward Police say he ended up here at the Police Department. He picked up the police phone talked with an officer here at the department. We understand he does not speak very much english but was able to communicate his name and he is hes doing okay. Thats where we stand now at this time. The game plan as we take it back out here live is to wait for special olympic officials to arrive from los angeles. Thats what i heard from officials. The good news, a Special Olympics athlete from albania found here more than 360 miles away from where he was last seen in los angeles here at the hayward Police Department. The main question, how he ended under here in hay up up here in hayward. The bottom line hes found and appears to be okay. Reporter thats the bottom line, at least from a physical appearance from what i saw he leaked to be okay. He doesnt speak that much english. We were talking with Hayward Police, the only phrase hes saying is i dont know, i dont know. He also respoendz to his name responds to his name okay. In hayward more than 75 people who live in an apartment complex were evacuated from their home after a series of fires in their building. Fire Officials Say three separate fires began on the third floor of the courtyard apartments. Thats on silva avenue. It happened early this morning. Everyone was able to get out of the building safely but two people were treated for minor smokerelated injuries. The battalion chief says arson investigators as well as Hayward Police are on the scene trying to determine if the fires are suspicious. Good news if you ride b. A. R. T. , the trains they are back. They are up and running between the east bay and San Francisco after the transbay tube was closed down over the weekend. Janine de la vega live in fremont, good to see you again. Oakland police about to hold a News Conference about an officerinvolved shooting. You can see the spokeswoman speaking root now right now. Lets listen in. Well be discussing the often that occurred this the officerinvolved shooting that occurred this morning at 1 30 a. M. At this time i would like to turn it over to sean whent. Please hold your questions until weve had the opportunity to provide as much information as possible and then well be able to respond to your questions. Thank you. Chief . Good morning. Last night at about 9 00 p. M. , oakland Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a Sexual Assault. They began that investigation at that time that ultimately led them to a house they believed to be the suspects house in the 3800 block of mlk about 1 30 this morning. As officers went to the house to try to locate the suspect, the suspect came out of the front door, with a rifle and immediately began firing upon the officers that were in front of the house. Two Police Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. One of the Police Officers was struck by gunfire. The suspect and the injured Police Officer were transported to a local hospital. The suspect died from his injuries. The Police Officer sustained significant gunshot wound and is currently in serious stable condition has already undergone one surgery and will likely have more surgeries forthcoming. The two involved officers, one of them was a 14year veteran, recently promoted sergeant and the second one was a oneyear veteran of the the department. The suspect in this case was a 49yearold oakland resident. At this time, there are no additional suspects that we believe we are looking for. We did recover a rifle from the scene. There were many rounds fired at the scene. We dont have an exact count of that yet. Were still conducting our investigation at the scene and well have more information in the future. At this time well open it up. I apologize. I failed to announce that bureau of investigation deputy chief royce is also here with us as well. So well open it up for questions. [the question is inaudible] this was an Assault Rifle. There will be a picture i think we have a picture. Here is the rifle that was recovered from the suspect during the incident last night with the officers. As you can see, it looks look an Assault Rifle with an extended magazine. [rib audible [inaudible] no. [the question is inaudible] we havent reached a full count but many rounds were fired. Its close to a full magazine if not full. [the question is inaudible] at least one time. Where . I cant reap lease release that information. I cant release that information. I dont know for sure. [the question is inaudible] yes. Yes. So it appears the suspect came out of the house firing . Yes. [inaudible. It doesnt look any conversation was prior to the gunfire. [inaudible] were not sure but we do believe thats the case. [inaudible question] its hard to say at this point in the investigation. Were looking into that part of the investigation. Does the suspect have a criminal tristry history if. I dont have that information in front of me. Were there other officers in the vicinity . Yes. Were gonna send out a press release. Attached will be a photo. If we receive any Additional Information as the day goes on, well certainly follow up and release that. When is the last time an officer was shot in the line of duty . [inaudible] i cant think of it. M started at 1 30 a. M. When two officers went to a home in north oakland. They were looking for a man believed to have committed a Sexual Assault. You just heard the chief says that the officers did not engage in conversation, didnt have a chance to. The police chief said that the suspect came out of the home with a rifle and began firing immediately. Two officers returned fire. One officer was hurt with what are described as significant injuries from a gunshot wound. That officer has been through one surgery, may have more to come according to the chief. The suspect in this case was shot and killed by officers. The suspect only described as a 49yearold oakland man. The two officers in this case, 14year veteran and a 1year veteran. We dont know which one of the two was hurt. You saw the Oakland Police Department Share a photo of the Assault Rifle they say they recovered from the scene. Whats interesting, the police chief said there was no conversation before the bullets started flying. Now, this was the fourth officerinvolved shooting in the city of oakland this year. The second fatal one. They are still pulling together a lot of information. You saw the police chief saying several times, i dont have the information. Not this week, we might eek out a 90. But until then it will be a lot of upper 70s. Theres plenty of gray to go around. Not only that but the wind about 32, 42 miles an hour from travis to the Altamont Pass. Everything is looking favorable even for the firefighters. Reports that the wind is blowing a lot of that smoke east, not west away from town. That helps a little bit plus its significantly cooler around humidity is way up. 70, 80 last week, teens and 20s. 50s and 60s on the temps verses 70s and 80s. The highs will be in the 80s. A richmond woman suspected of steeling more than 35,000 worth of valuables from a home she rented through air bnb. Police say 27yearold Janet Dominguez rented the home in San Francisco in april. She had access to most of the apartment but that the owner locked the closet and office that were supposed to be off limits to renters. There is an accident in fairfield if you are driving in that area, you will see a lot of slow from vacaville. That accident is in one of the lanes. Give yourself plenty of times. By the time you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, theres waiting to do. If we can go to the toll plaza, you can see the traffic is backed up a little bit. But some people arent getting through on 80. I just showed you that. Here if you are driving on 80 and you are coming from a different direction, this is kind of having a little bit of a benefit for you. More than 9,000 firefighters battling wildfires all across california. There are at least 21 major fires burning in california. This map shows you, you can see there are fires from the oregon porder to the Cleveland National forest near san diego. The gray colored flames, thats for active fires completely contained. Lightning strikes, they are blamed for several fires east of eureka. In the rocky fire up in lake county, its burned 60,000 acres. This morning, the fire is 12 contained. Calfire said its the largest fire its dealing with right now. Allie rasmus is live in the newsroom. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate because of the rocky fire. And because it is the largest wildfire in the state, calfire says the rocky fire is their top priority and they are in the process of moving firefighters and resources from some of the other areas. The rocky fire has burned 60,000 acres. Thats about 94 scbar miles. The size of the entire square miles, the size of the entire city of orlando. The fire containt m is 12 containment is 12 . Several things have made this fire particularly challenging. The fact its burning in rugged terrain that only be accessed on fought or by on foot or by air. The other challenge, the dry terrain because of the drought. The fire is large enough to create it own winds which makes fighting the fire very unpredictable. So far 12,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the area since this fire began on wednesday. Some residents are leaving ahead of the evacuation orders and preparing themselves for the worst. We would rather go when were ready rather than have them say were ready. We have the family and the pets. 24 homes have been destroyed. 6300 homes other homes are threatened by it. There were new evacuation orders that went into effect. Law enforcement officers spent the overnight hours telling people who live along ogle canyon road and Spring Valley to get out. Calfires plan, continue to battle the looky fire from the air, create fire breaks and they hope the weather conditions remain favorable. They were this weekend with cooler temperatures and higher humidity, so they can get a handle on it. Coming up, i know you will get an update from calfire. Following developing news weve been bringing you from oakland. A Police Officer was shot and injured this person morning. A suspect was killed. Alex savidge is live in oakland now where just 30 minutes ago, the police chief gave us new details. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning to you. The gunman who was shot and killed by Oakland Police early this morning was wanted for questioning in connection with a Sexual Assault investigation. This was a crime that happened about 9 00 last night and investigative work led oakland Police Officers to a home on Martin Luther king, junior way close to 39th street and thats where the shooting took place. Oakland Police Officers caught up with this 49yearold man outside of this home but immediately upon arrival this man pulled out an ansalt rifle and opened fire on the two Police Officers. One of those oakland plifs was hit by the gunfire. That officer was rushed to the hospital, went through one surgery already and is said to be in stable condition. Those two officers immediately returned fire, hitting the man with the Assault Rifle. That man was rushed to the hospital where he later died. Now, the first call about the shooting came in around 1 30 this morning. Neighbors told us they heard a lot of gunfire out here. Some people heard a couple of dozen shots at least being fired. Now, we may be able to show you here the weapon that was used here by the gunman in this case, according to police. This was an sks Assault Rifle with an extended magazine. A 30round magazine. That weapon was recovered here at the scene of this shooting. Again, two officers involved in this shooting. Were told one of them was a 13 year veteran of the force. The other one was a 1year veteran. We dont know which officer was wounded. Police didnt clarify. There will be an extensive investigation. Homicide detectives will be investigating this along with the internal afFairs Division and members of the Alameda County Sheriffs Office out here. Were still watching the crime scene technicians gathering a lot of the physical evidence. A lot of shell casings all over the street. A lengthy investigation. An elementary schoolteacher in the south bay is due in court on charges of Sexual Assaulter four female students. 52yearold john lloyd waived a preliminary hearing last month allowing this case to go trite to trial. He taught fifth trade at Paradise Valley elementary in hollister. Hes been on leave since his arrest last october when the first female student came forward and accused him of Sexual Assault. Hes being held at the Santa Clara County jail without bail. An investigation is underway now in contra costa county. There was a fire at the conocophillips in rodeo that prompted a health alert. As fire crews keep battling the rocky wildfire, it makes us think back of wildfires from the past. Here is a look at the top three largest wildfires in california. The cedar fire in 2003 in San Diego County burned more than 273,000 acres and killed 15 people. In 2012, the rush fire in Lassen County bushed almost 272,000 acres and most recently, the rim fire burned more than 275,000 acres 257,000 acres. Rim fire started august 17th, 2013. Those flames destroyed more than 100 structures and injured ten people. At the height, 5,000 firefighters battled those flames. A bow hunter was accused of accidentally starting the fire but federal authorities dismissed the charges. Well, an autopsy will be performed on a firefighter who died last week battling wildfires in the modock National Forest. Dave rule of south dakota went missing on thursday. His body was found on friday morning. Officials say it may take up to five weeks to know exactly how he died. Now, the frog fire out there started burning thursday afternoon near californias border with oregon. Its already burned almost 4,000 acres. As of last night, it was only 20 contained. The wildfire thats been burning in napa and solano counties its 95 contained. The rag fire started july 22nd. Its burned more than 8,000 acres and damaged several structures. At one point at its height about 1,000 firefighters were out there battling the flames. All of the roads that were closed have now been reopened. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. And we continue to follow the developing story of the raging fire up in lake county. The rocky fire has burned through at least 60,000 acres. To give you an idea of how big the fire is, its covered the area the size of seattle. Thousands of homes are threatened. More than 20 homes have burned. Joining us from sacramento, calfire Public Information officer, dan yet berlent daniel berlent. Lets with all right start with the rocky fire. The goal was to keep the fire south of highway 20. So far weve been successful doing that. 60,000 acres have burned. We have it 12 contained. Were making good progress. Well over 13,000 people are evacuated or under an evacuation advisory from in fire. How much longer do you expect the firefight to continue and what factors are making it so difficult for crews there . You know, its a hard estimate to know how much longer it will be burning. Overnight we made progress. Thats good. We want to continue that, continue to get in there with the crews building the containment line around the fire using our aircraft. The biggest challenge, the conditions are so dry, not just in lake county but across northern california. Because of the drought, the veg takes is very dry. Its burning at an explosive rate. Over weekend we saw 20,000 acres burn in a fivehour period. Thats a historical unprecedented rate of threat for a wildfire. Unfortunately, we still have several more months of fire season ahead of us. Weve gotta remain prepared and we have to ask the public to remain prepared as well. Governor brown declared a state of emergency for california because of the fires. What does that mean for calfire . Well, the state of emergency helps us what federal reimbursements making sure we have the funding we need. In california, we have a fund specifically set aside to continue to help us battle the fires. But that federal reimbursement will be a huge help. We did activate the National Guard allowing us to continue the air resources even more of them using c130 air tankers from out of state. Now we have two from the National Guard out of colorado that will help us in the battle but again, weve got a lot more work ahead of us extra rae sources and the state of emergency all helping to battle the fires. People arent getting through as well as they could. Now, lets move along to the san mateo bridge. That traffic is moving along okay. Things are improving heading out to the peninsula. 80, the road sensor completely fired up on red here on 80. Its been very slow. 80 all the way through. Thats why i dont think a lot of people are getting through all of that slow traffic. You will see moderate conditions on 680 heading down from concord to walnut creek if you can go a different way. 8 19. Lets go to steve. Well, big cooldown for us compared to last week when it was about the heat and 90s and 100s. Thats not the case. Good news for the firefighters going 80s. Not 99 to 105 or anything like that. As you just heard a lot of conditions, much more favorable, higher humidity, more of a westerly or a south early breeze. The temps cooling off make a huge, huge difference. It doubled on saturday between oakland, alameda and San Francisco. On a typical saturday, about 4,000 passengers ride the ferry but this weekend, nearly 9,000 people boarded. Ridership was also up on the vallejo folks side. Others who normally depend on b. A. R. T. Canceled their plans while some used uber. B. A. R. T. Did provide shuttle buses between west oakland and San Francisco for people who had no other option and that service is also gonna be offered next month during the Labor Day Weekend when the transbay tube is closed again so the work can be comreebilitied. Witnesses said they saw smoke and flames coming from the planes engine during this flight between las vegas and fresno. But they still dont know if its from 370 for sure. The flight went missing last year in march with 239 people on board. Its the only plane unaccounted for. Today a legal battle between planned parenthood and an anti Abortion Group continues in the courtroom of a federal judge in San Francisco. On friday, that judge issued a temporary restraining order against the group that released several undercover videos of planned parenthood leaders allegedly talking about using aborted fetuses for research. The group secretly recorded the videos and thats illegal in california. At todays hearing, the judge will consider a where for an injunction to block the group from releasing any more videos that were secretly recorded. Today, the u. S. Senate will vote on a republican sponsored bill in response to the videos aimed at cutting all government funding of planned parenthood. Supporters say cutting federal aid will not affect the abortions it provide because federal money cant be used for abortions except for cases of rape, incest or when a womens life is in danger.
