Those not using seatbelts will face a 20 fine. Ammunition purchases in california will have to be made in person through a vendor licensed by the department of justice. Gun owners will also be banned from importing ammunition from outside the state unless it first goes through a licensed vendor. And several new cannabis laws are also expected to take effect january 1st. They range from regulations on Drone Deliveries to dispensary locations. Today San Franciscos rec and Park Department officially renamed sharon meadow in Golden Gate Park after robin williams. Williams was a big supporters of the annual free comedy day in the park. It had been held at sharon meadow for 20 years and at other locations in the park since 1981. Back in september, when the city announced the plan, the late mayor ed lee paid tribute to williams. He said it was fitting to name the meadow after wind chills because he brought so much light into the world. The bridge watch angels are looking for volunteers for the holidays. The group works on the Golden Gate Bridge to try to prevent suicides. According to the website, 184 people came to the bridge to end their lives in 2016. They kept the government funded at its current levels until january 19th when the money runs out. A couple of extra things in there. Some funding for the pentagon and veterans and also the chip program, the medical help for low income children almost 9 million across the country. So a couple of extras in there but basically kicking the can down the road another four weeks. Without it, though, the government would have run out of money tomorrow night at midnight. Any word on when they could reach a permanent solution . It runs out january 19th. Reporter right. They do need to come together in the following months. Some of the folks in the senate were complaining saying, im not voting on another temporary measure. This might sound familiar. We were talking about this two weeks ago. The last time they had a temporary measure. It might not come in january. We might see a continuing resolution but after that, they know its hard to run the government and federal agencies when you never know when the money runs out. Now that the spending bill passed, congress added language to the spending plan to make sure that the tax measure would not trigger automatic cuts to medicare and other programs. The tax bill offers permanent tax cuts for businesses and smaller temporary cuts for individuals. Today democrats continued to claim that the gop bill will not help the middle class. Who got the help . Just like the republican tax beneficial the answer is already clear. Those at the top, corporations that care more about profits than treating workers fairly. The bill could add 1 trillion or more to the deficit. Republicans say Economic Growth will make up for that. The gop is also counting on savings from the elimination of the obamacare individual mandate to help with the projected deficit from the tax bill. Fire crews in Southern California are battling another brush fire in riverside. The fire started around 11 a. M. Near the downtown area threatening 300 to 400 homes. Mandatory evacuations are under way. Crews have kept it to 50 acres. They are concerned because strong winds in the area could spread embers to spark new spot fires. The fire caused minor damage to two instruction. In Santa Barbara county evacuation orders have been listed and evacuees of the thomas fire were allowed to return today. There is still a remote area in the mountains of neighboring Ventura County thats still under evacuation orders tonight. The thomas fire has burned more than 272,000 acres and destroyed 770 homes. So far, the fire is 60 contained with full containment expected on january 7th. The Milpitas Fire Department says a suspect is in custody in a string of fires in Santa Clara County. Authority say 26yearold Jeffrey Reyes is suspected of setting 12 separate fires along interstate 680 on december ninth. Fire Officials Say they believe he also set a fire the night before in milpitas and another in october that burned a vacant building that was slated for demolition. Reyes was booked into the Santa Clara County main jail on three counts of arson. And an arrest is made in a mail bombing case that injured the wife of an Alameda Police officer. Ross Gordon Laverty was charged in federal court today with mailing an explosive device with the intent to injure or kill. Authorities say he sent the package to the officers home on alamedas Bay Farm Island last month. The officer was at work at the time so his wife opened up the package and suffered hearing loss and minor burns when it exploded. Investigators believe the suspect may be responsible for a similar explosive device that was mailed to an East Palo Alto home in october. In San Francisco boulders have been put in place where Homeless People once slept. Its a new effort by city leaders to make it harder for them to set up camp. But as ktvus rob roth tells us, the homeless say this new tactic wont work. Reporter here along cesar chavez street and potrero avenue under the highway 101 maze of overpasses, San Franciscos Public Works Department installed dozens of boulders scattered about three different caltransowned open spaces, areas that until recently were makeshift campgrounds to dozens of Homeless People. It will be more difficult to carry all this stuff that they were carrying in before. It wont give them a large footprint. Reporter the cost of the boulder, 8,700. We spend that much in a week just doing the cleanup there because of Health Hazard and safety reasons. I think the boulders are useless. Its a waste of taxpayer money. Reporter this man has been homeless for two years. He moved across the street after the boulders were put in. He says its not enough to keep the homeless from moving back. This is not where they should put their efforts, in rocks. They should help the homeless get into homes instead of sleeping under a freeway or Something Like that. Open up more homes. Reporter advocates for the homeless say this is not the way to solve such a complex problem. Folks are just going to be tucked away in a different part of that area under the freeway. Its probably less safe, closer to the streets where they can be hit by a car. Reporter the city isnt sure if the new landscape will deter homeless camps. The boulders only cover a fraction of the spaces. But the city says its a low cost plan worth trying. Were trying this out. Well see what happens. And you find out what works and what doesnt and make adjustments. If it doesnt work, it doesnt work. A los angeles man has filed a Class Action Lawsuit against apple over the companys decision to slow down older iphones to save battery life. Apple is now acknowledging it released a feature that slows down the iphones processor when its running on an aging battery. But Stefan Bogdanovich claims the companys decision to slow the operation of older phones to save battery life was never requested or agreed upon by consumers.
