KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am July 13, 2024

Containment with it over the weekend we have been told by officials that is not a huge cause for worry firefighters right now have an important window of time in which the wind has died down dramatically. We have an update on the number of structures that have burned, how much land has burned. This has been an intense firefight. You can already feel some of the smoke affect us. Ive gotten a lot of tweets asked about the quality last time. There is a marsh fire as well and some of that smoke is coming down here as well. You can almost see in the newsroom this morning when you came in. As for the king fire it is still racing across north bay. It is expanding so fast as mentioned only five containment and has burned almost 85 square miles thus far. 94 buildings including more than 30 homes have been destroyed and almost 80,000 buildings are in danger. A News Conference will be held shortly and we will bring that update to you coming up in just a matter of minutes. So far 200,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the dark red border by a bright red one at the top of the screen. We had a map but that area is really starting to come down and about to leak in the county. Concerns for lakewood county to evacuate all the way goes to the pacific ocean. I will say it again quickly we are set up to hear what how foreign you fire has to say we will have a 9 00 update and we will bring that to you as it happens. It was all right lets go over with a look at some of the weather. And you have been saying all morning that the wind is calmer but we will have a number of events coming up. It is good news laced with bad news unfortunately. I want to start with the temperatures in north bay check this out where you can see a big slit in the difference between santa rosa in the 30s and San Francisco in the 50s. Part of it is the dry air has been ushered into the north bay with all this offshore flow. Part of it also is the smoke that is there and it is not allowing the sun to warmness up so that is why it is so cool. 50s for most of the rest. The wind is nice and calm it is really a much better difference in the situation today so it is a good day for firefighters theyll be able to get my form a handle on things than they did in the last 2436 hrs. You can see here the humidity levels are rising all morning it is 68 , 55 , you can see all around here it is just improving. The wind calming down and going up. That is all good news. What is bad news is that even though our red flag warning looks limited this morning we have another round of offshore wind coming our way and will be tuesday into one day. This is not expected to be as strong or longlasting but will reduce critical fire weather and ill be tuesday into wednesday. Let me time it out for you and show you. Firefighters still are going to have the upper hand here. As we get to tuesday this is when the wind starts working against us. We have the offshore flow going now it really gets going into the later evening and overnight hours until finally ramping down as we work our way into wednesday. And then we do not see more of in the forecast which is the good news. Those will start to relax is a go throughout the day today. Notice were not the only ones dealing with this down in Southern California there also dealing with the offshore event causing fires as well highs today upper 60 today in San Francisco and if you see a quick look at your forecast we are going to go back to the anchors now i think we have a press conference. Were going to listen and hear. California fire is bringing us the latest on the fire. Additionally at the conclusion of the english language version of this press conference we will have a spanishlanguage version with representatives from fire and Law Enforcement. As we did yesterday we will have an update from the Weather Service as well as our fire behavior analyst. Where we stand right now since we were here last night at about 630 is the fire has grown to six thousand acres and is only five contained. The fire is threatening just under 80,000 homes predominately we can confirm that 96 structures have been destroyed. And 16 have been damaged. A full breakdown of what type of structures those are, homes, businesses and buildings have been published this morning overnight the most fire activity that we saw was just south of the town of windsor along with silo ridge area. Firefighters made an aggressive stand in that area and brought in a significant number of resources as it was impacting a relatively populated area. We do not have a published list of the impact of that area yet will get that to you as soon as possible but we do know that was an area that was with the most activity last night. As far as where we are at this point. We have the National Guard as well as firefighters from a number of neighboring states now here at the fire our numbers have been brought up to over 4000 firefighters here battling this fire in the county with that i would like to pass it over to ryan walburn from the national Weather Service to give us a brief update on what we can expect. Good morning. So we still under a red flag warning at 11 00 this morning. After that it is going to give us a good window of opportunity with some more weather this afternoon overnight tonight and into Tuesday Morning hopefully the firefighters can take advantage of those calmer weather conditions what we are starting to get ready for though is another red flag event right now it looks at that will start sometime mid day tuesday and push us into wednesday morning so we have got a quiet 24 hour window right now and looking to go to another critical period tuesday night into wednesday. As we march forward in time we do see less wind as a get towards the end of the week that has been in our favor but unfortunately no rain in the forecast. I would like to invite our fire analyst. Good morning the firefighters are actively engaged right now with this wind shift that the meteorologist spoke of will give us a decrease in the fire behavior out there which will limit the amount of spotting that we have which is going to limit the flame length and the fire intensity. That will give the firefighters a great opportunity to go in and do the jobs that they need to do. We still have a lot of problems with the fire and timber in the area coming down across the roads it is causing issues getting to and from the area. As well as causing a bunch of spot fires to rollout down the steeper areas of the northern parts of the incidents. Today when the wind shifts does not give us that much of a calm sensation because in the Northeast Corner of this fire has not been wind tested yet that is the area of most importance that we are looking at today because that is the area where the wind is going to have a tendency to blow some of those embers across the line. Currently, the firefighters are preparing for that next wind event that is coming. Were still doing a lot of the modeling to try give them the best product that we can. We will not get a briefing from our Incident Commanders. Good morning everybody. So as you are probably all aware the weather predictions surfaced as predicted yesterday and the fire was extremely active during the day yesterday starting at about one a clock yesterday morning. By looking at the map you can see that the fire more than doubled in size yesterday and that did present some challenges for us. So the priority for today is are going to work on the area where we just talked about in this small eastern corner that we are talking about today. And coming onto the side working in the northwest area and the silo ridge area the fire did make it that far south last night to silo ridge. So we are going to be really aggressive today with the break in the weather pattern. Working on perimeter control in those areas that we just talked about but not electing the structure defense of the area. Thank you. Other any question specifically for the Incident Commander . Yes many structures the role alyssa still threatened there for sure i do not think i want to speak to the structure damages destroyed right now but yes we are very concerned about structures threatened there and like we just set a structure section will be aggressive with the perimeter control there. Im not prepared to say that right now. All right thank you chief. We will get those numbers for damage and destroyed as we go. We have damage inspection teams out there going through all of the areas as those numbers come out we will get them. We do know that there was some additional structures damaged or destroyed last night we will get more specifics throughout the day. All right with that i would like to now invite up the county sheriffs department. Good morning. Im from the county Sheriffs Office. So i wanted to give you a quick update on staffing and what is happening with the Law Enforcement presence. We currently have several hundred Police Officers who are coming to us from all over the state. Over 140 Police Agencies to merrily being supported by the california Highway Patrol. And the National Guard. So we are very grateful to our partners for being able to be there for us. And help us maintain these evacuation areas and maintain safety inside of those evacuation areas. So i wanted to go over a couple of terms with you that youre going to start hearing quite frequently the next few days. And, that is reentry and repopulation. So i wanted to set the definition so people know we are talking about. When we talk about reentry that is a specific foregoing into an area that has been burned. So when we talk reentry that would be for people to re access an area that has been suffered with a burn with utilities down we talk about repopulation. We talk about letting people back into an area that has been unaffected. So clearly what i want to talk about is reentry we have no plans for reentry right now. Areas that have been burned have utilities down we still have fire crews in their and we understand that people are very anxious to get into the burned areas to check on their property they want to do reentry but at this point we are not doing reentry at all. When it comes to repopulation we do know that youre anxious to get home we had a lot of questions for people who live perhaps in the west county who are thinking theyre not affected by this fire and there is no chance that they will be affected but we are working on repopulation. I do not have the announcements for you yet. But i can tell you that the general idea is that we will start and some of the reverse order of evacuation. When it comes to repopulation we will look at repopulating the west county first and then move our way in. When we make those decisions we will announce them. So please follow us on our social media platforms. It is not too late to subscribe. You can text your zip code to aaa 777 to receive those updates. Lastly i want to talk a little bit about why evacuations are important. It is really first to protect your life as you have heard me talk over the last couple of days. Life is the most important thing we have the warning, we have the ability to predict summit where the fire is going. We want to get people out. In front of that fire and stabilize it. However, the second item that we are doing with evacuations really helps us protect property. And the example i want to talk about briefly is windsor. Yesterday in the northeastern area of windsor we had a very aggressive fight on the fire. From all the Public Safety people in that area. Had the area not been evacuated those firefighters and Public Safety people would not have been as effective as they were. And it wouldve allowed them to aggressively fight the fire and we had a lot of success yesterday in windsor. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our firefighters the Northern Area of windsor was saved yesterday because of their efforts. And a part of that is your efforts to evacuate and allowing us to get in there and access those areas so thank you for following the directions. That is truly a success story. Continue to follow us on social media. To stay informed and we will have another update for you soon thank you. I will be glad to do followup questions with you in just a minute. Speaking after the california Highway Patrol. Good morning everybody. I am the assistant chief for california Highway Patrol i would like to announce lately last night we were able to get open all of the 101 north and southbound areas are open for traffic. We want to remind everybody though that there is still a large evacuated area and all the ramps in those areas are still blocked and they will remain blocked as long as it is evacuated. I do also want to remind everybody that even when we do Start Talking about allowing people back in that there still is going to be a great deal of traffic in the area especially moving the resources and Emergency Personnel around. So please remember that. And i still want to remind anybody to be very cautious. We have a great deal of traffic out there. We are still living resources around. There is debris all over the roadway still and we still have a lot of Power Outages. So please plan ahead. Allow extra time when you are moving dont try and rush. We really appreciate all the patients that everybody has had you have done a great job so far we just ask you to keep continuing to do that thank you. Speaking next ribs and the countys supervisor rabbit. Thank you very much. Obviously we have a very active situation still and i appreciate as less than the firefighters took the challenge i think the county has also risen to the challenge as has our state and the federal partners and most importantly the community. Has really risen to the challenge. We have shelters throughout this county and the southern portion of the county primarily shelters and not the county have also been helping us i would encourage people for shelter information probably be best to go online for information. We have asked you to prepare we ask you now for your patience as a chef said it will take some time. For our firefighters to continue to make sure all areas are safe. So we ask for your patience. And we ask you to continue to do what you have always done and be kind to one another. , to help one another out and make sure that you take care of one another and take care of your family, friends, your pets. It is, we are in this for the long haul and we definitely need to have patience and need to be careful. The Public Safety is the countys number one concern, thank you. Our final speaker revisiting the United States congress is representative jared huff. I am joined by Mike Thompson who just arrived and thompson and i have been in touch with the department of Homeland Security to seek assurances for anyone seeking shelter or services during this emergency that they would be no emergency Immigration Enforcement activity. And i am pleased to update you that within the last 24 hours we have received the official assurance from the department of Homeland Security so everyone seeking service or shelter should do so with confidence that they will not be Immigration Enforcement activity. Thank you im happy to open up to questions and answer any of the representatives behind me now. Yes, overnight we did not have any additional injuries reported yesterday we had one minor burn injury that was taken by ground to the hospital but we also had a more serious burn injury that was flown to uc davis medical center. That is the extent of what we are releasing at this moment pending investigation. It is a large number. The best estimate that we have at this point is about 185,000 people. I dont have those numbers for you i am sorry. That is correct. All current evacuation warnings and all current evacuation orders remain in full force and effect. I would say it is still a fluid situation with the wind event that is coming up possibly tuesday i cannot commit right now to say that there will not be. We will continuously evaluate. We will work with our firefighters to determine what the best course of action is. I can give you a rough estimate. Today at 10 am the Sheriff Office leadership will meet with california leadership to really take a hard look into what areas we can repopulate so after that meeting today we should have some direction and it should have some news to report to you later. Thank you. Yesterday we covered an arrest that we have made listening in here to the county sheriffs department. As were getting the very latest on the fire that is burning in the county the latest estimate they have is what we have been reporting for you through the morning some 66,000 acres plus affected by this fire 96 structures burned of those, 40 of them are home. We have tens of thousands of people who have been forced from their homes under evacuation orders the fire is shifting a bit i think fire crews are definitely really focusing in on the Northeast Corner in napa county. They are big causes for concern a lot of people that live in the west county are thinking that they can go home now but the answer is not just yet we did hear from the sheriff they are saying that they are going to start working on repopulation efforts and getting people back in the area that have not burned. And essentially if youre the last one to get out you should be among the first to get in but there is no plan right now to get people back into areas that have burned. He made a point of saying that reentry is for people that are going back into areas that are burnt. Repopulation is if theyre letting you in an area where they are talking about repopulation as you mentioned but not reentry. And that maybe the western portion of the county because that is on the coast as you mentioned one of the questions on their that area right there that has been evacuated those folks are going to find out perhaps today because th
