California needs the rain. Todays storm helped boost our water supply. Were dealing with the cold, wet, and windy weather. Its something else. Today a quickmoving storm soaked the bay area, dumping rain that overwhelmed drains and caused problems on the roads. Reporter parts of the bay area saw hail. A viewer sent us this video from outside his home in the castro district. And the highest peaks picked up some snow. 3,400 in the santa cruz mountains. The sierra got smacked with a lot of snow. More than a foot at higher elevations. This is video of the treacherous drive along interstate 80. Amber lee is here now with more on how the weather affected everyones day. Its been a while since we have had heavy rain. A day of treacherous driving and dealing with problems caused by the rain. Reporter thursdays winter storm made a big splash all over the bay area. In San Francisco, we found standing water. Neighbors say its a recurring problem. I live here. Thats my garage. Water gets too high. It floods. Reporter taking matters into his own hands. I clean out the drain. I make sure im streetsweeping days the drain is clear. Reporter Public Utilities crews performed the same task. Vacuuming catch basins and clearing grates covered with debris. In the south bay, the heavy rain created dangerous driving conditions along highway 17 between san jose and santa cruz. There were at least ten collisions on highway 17 today. This motorcyclist says it is risky to ride in the rain. Im trying to watch what theyre doing and hoping for the best. Reporter in the east bay, a car overturned in oakland on i 980 near 12th street. One person was taken away in an ambulance. Hydroplaning and Poor Visibility challenged drivers and kept First Responders busy. Its been a while since umbrellas were needed. In oaklands chinatown, people were walking at a brisk pace, dodging the rain the best they could. And while a storm like this can be an inconvenience, the rain is welcomed by bay area water agencies. We havent had a lot of rain in the last few weeks. We have had some in the prior months. And we are really reliant upon rainfall to fill our reservoirs. We tend to get most of our rainfall january, february timeframe. Reporter if that holds true, this rain is perhaps a sign this that this winter will help keep California Free of drought. This most certainly the largest storm weve seen in 2020 so far. It dropped a lot of rain. These are 24hour totals. These rain total, most of them fell within four or five hours. This is significant rainfall. Almost an inch and a half in kentfield. A half inch in san jose. And the rainfall rates today, you were there. You saw it. The rainfall rates at times were, like, an inch an hour. Really coming down. Causing a lot of flooding in parts of the bay areas on the streets and the freeways. And in the mountains, what that equates to big snowfall. And people up there say it has been dumping ridiculous amounts, blizzard conditions. Chains will be required throughout the evening hours. We will see some showers continue. Rain showers still lingering. But most of them dying down. Were gonna look at the places the valley fog is gonna form and another shot at some rain in the fiveday. All that rain combined with cold temperatures left a dusting of snow on mt. Diablo. Some drivers wanted to see the snow for themselves. Reporter we always need the rain. But having it doesnt necessarily mean we like dealing with wet road. S. But the peaks of mt. Diablo in the distance. We saw the white. We want to see the snowfall reporter visitors ventured up mt. Four people have been arrested, accused of running brothels out of two home homes. Azenoeth s. Reporter one neighbor tells me she was seeing men walk in and out of the homes at all hours of the day. She expected illegal activity, she didnt think police would move in, shocked that they did. These four people are accused of Human Trafficking, pimping and pandering in san jose. Monica believed to be the madame. Police have identified six survivors of Human Trafficking ranging in age from 24 to 54. The police came. And they had their machine guns. Antonio salvodar and albertanarenga are charged with keeping vasquez against her will. They were able to find the girl after friends figured out her location with the help of her snapchat app. Here in the shadow of the oakland coliseum, governor gavin newsom unveiled some of the more than a billion dollar statewide effort to address the homeless crisis, including emergency tent, fema trailers and medical services.
