This action on the part of the ilwu is the first time in American History that an International Union has commemorated the emancipation of africanamerican people in the United States of america. This is a different generation and we will not sit by and accept what is happening. We will be out there and start the action. On the other side of the bay, there were scattered protests including a rolling protest with drivers holding up signs and honking their horns in solidarity with black lives matter. At city hall, hundreds gathered demanding the city shift funding away from police and remove Police Officers from city schools. A youth rally drew hundreds to the santa clara Country Building for a local registration event. They called for the release of all young people being held the Juvenile Hall. They say the black youth are nearly 7 times more likely to be admitted to Juvenile Hall than their peers, and that number is nine times for latino youth. We want to allocate the funds coming from Juvenile Hall and give that back to our youth so they have the resources to turn their lives around and prosper. An event was held calling for funds to be shifted from policing to the community and for increased investment in black possesses. Faith leaders called for change on this juneteenth announcing a march through san jose tomorrow focusing on police reform. Hundreds of family members and friends said farewell to a federal Law Enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty. A Public Memorial Service was held at the high school where David Patrick underwood once attended school. The acting secretary of Homeland Security as well as state and local leaders were among those in attendants. We are seeing in some spots here in california some parts of the state were some counties are taking a more cautious approach. In san diego they put a pause on the reopening strategy. Santa clara county seems to be doing the same thing taking it slow in terms of reopening. As we continue to open up more and more businesses, what are the most important metrics we need to look at to know if we need to dial things back. I think that we have to continue the testing. That is the most important way to really monitor the spike of the new cases. And i feel there is a question about trying to find a balance between Public Health concern as well is reopening of the economy and society. We all agreed that we have to open the society and reopen the economy. At the same time, there is a lot of concern because of the ongoing pandemic. One life is more important. And so i feel that the reopening of society is something we have to do what we have to do. Keep the social distancing and really make sure that we minimize our exposure to the virus. I think that is what we can do with the reopening of the economy. What we just saw yesterday as you well know, the governor put a statewide order in place saying Everyone Needs to wear a mask out doors. How important is mask wearing . If we get more people to wear masks when theyre out in public, do you think that will dampen the increase in cases we are seeing right now . Yes. I really believe that wearing a mask will play an Important Role in reducing the potential exposure to the virus. As we know, there is so much data that shows social distancing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the exposure. And the reopening of society and the economy and clearly it is almost impossible in several cases to keep the social distancing like public transportation. In that case, you have to really put on a mask. That is one of the ways that will really protect you from exposure to the virus. And id like to point out one more thing about when the mask is protection from other people. Wearing a mask, one of the most Important Roles of wearing a mask is not only protecting you but other people. We know a lot of people like the elderly and the people with underlying medical conditions are highly susceptible to covid 19. You saw there was some of those reforms are including a ban on the chokehold and changes in the way that intervention is done in the state. Another hot topic was this mask mandate. The governor of california saying we must wear a mask of for outside if we cant socially distance. How do you enforce that . He basically said what, its not that enforceable. We will probably not have cops out there on the street writing them tickets about masks. Is an honor system thing. This is good educational policy. Ethnic studies lead to more positive social outcomes and allow students to introduce new perspectives and have some with Critical Thinking and increases empathy. There are a lot of good reasons. What do you make of the opposition from the university. It argues against legislative interference and that the process should be left to the individual institutions. In addition to the fact that we need to have these conversations, and what we are going through now highlights that need. We know that this is good for students. We are helping to train students to engage better. Everyone knows that he who doesnt know their history is bound to repeated. By educating our students and the history of slavery and oppression and segregation and the civil rights movement, the struggles that so many of our Diverse Communities have had, this is how we create a just future for california and bring our communities together.
