Im fine sweating it out. I have one of those inroom air conditioners. It gets hot in my house without ac as well. Lets get straight to breaking news. A raid that trampled the First Amendment gained National Attention when San Francisco police knocked down a journalists door all in search for a protected source. The fallout set off a scandal that continues to this day. Now through documents were getting a look at how high up the ranks this went. Evan is live to talk about what happened. Evan . Reporter good morning, gasia. I cant overstate how egregious this raid s you have San Francisco officers going into a journalists home, accusing him of committing a crime for doing what journalists do every day around the country, obtain documents and send them out to the public. First, we know the chief was intimately involved with very close details of this investigation. Not only did his Office ProvideBryan Carmodys name to investigators, the chief was alonged the way, along numerous steps, being briefed and according to one document, he even suggested one of the officers write the number on his creep cell ficers tracked h the hope of catching him. So top them it remained a let lit of a mystery even though they had some names. They werent able to tie them together specifically. You found that the police chief was very much involved in the operation behind the scenes. Reporter thats right. Bill bruconey, wrote this statement to the agency that is now conducting sort of an overview investigation into how this whole debacle unfolded and what he outlined was weekly meetings with the chief, with members of the command staff about how the investigation was progressing. So this wasnt a rogue group of internal Affairs Officers that slipped up and needed to be retrained. This is a departmentwide investigation. This isnt just a slipup by the San FranciscoPolice Department. There were numerous judges on the superior court who approved these warrants, these warrants that outlined Bryan Carmodys role. The california shield law that is supposed to protect reporters from revealing their sources. Evan, i have to say, your story, the details are incredible. You uncovered something that reads like something out of a hollywood movie. Reporter right. Some of the disturbing revelations is this idea of tracking someones geolocations. We already know they tried to break down Bryan Carmodys door with a sledge hammer but this is a new and disturbing way where the officers were death themes getting these warrants, plotting his paths on a map and getting a warrant. Folks who are against a see the state, the Police Department for weeks was conducting these invasive investigations all before this big now infamous raid where they tried to break down his door. He ultimately let him in. They held him for six hours and took all of his belongings. Evan, if i remember correctly, Bryan Carmody reached a settlement of a few hundred thousands. Can you update us on the investigations that might be open. Reporter the chief, after this debacle, called on an outside investigation. Nobody stepped in because no real crime occurred but the Police Accountability is conducting two. One is the overarching investigation into all this all happened and the second one trying to see who the officers are who leaked the report to Bryan Carmody. The dpa tried to contact the officers. The only way they would know are through this illegal search on carmodys cell phone. Even though the city has paid out 369,000, the chief has apologized. The city has a huge blemish the fruits of this illegal search. This shield law is supposed to protect journalists from revealing their Confidential Sources or being compelled to reveal their Confidential Sources. Any response from San Francisco police yet . I sent the Police Department a detailed list of questions for them to respond a couple days ago. They said they were looking into it and working on it. I still have not heard back from them. All right. Thank you for joining us here on the nine. Thank you, gasia. Of course. Thank you again to evan. Its a long read but a good read. He broke it online within the past hour. Right now youve got 23 counties on the States Coronavirus watch list and that includes three here in the bay area. Contra costa county, marin and see an nap counties. Right now 284,000 californias have tested positive for the coronavirus. Thats up 10,000 cases from this time yesterday. So far 6,500 in the state have died. As you may have seen a few minutes on ktvu, vicepresident mike pence was leading the task force on the coronavirus and had a press conference and how to reopen schools. Allie rasmus has more. Allie . That Task Force Meeting is going on. The briefing still happening at last check. Education secretary betsy devos wassink on reopening schools and how to do it. President trump did not speak at the task force briefing. It was vicepresident means nex but the cdc will be issuing a guidance on a fivepart series for schools, districts, teachers and parents to consider. The administrations position is that schools should open for inperson instruction in the fall. Heres what vicepresident mike pence had to say. Heard from the American Academy of pediatrics. Its absolutely essential that we get our kids back in the classroom for inperson learning. We cant let our kids fall behind academically. This follows a National Education meeting followed by the white house. The president did speak at that event. Thats when he said he wants to instruction and put pressure on state governments to do that. Even if kids get federal funding, the decision is mostly made at the local level. Lawmakers have discussed what schools would be required to do. California is requiring a daily amount of instruction but its unclear how much would have to be done inperson, in a class or if all of it can be done online through distant learning. The majority of children do not get seriously ill from covid 19. However, teachers and Staff Members are concerned for their safety and exposure to the virus. I want donald trump to sit in the back of my class of 39 and breathe the air. I want him to sit there for seven hours, five days a week and have those kids cough and sneeze on him. Now we know some of the existing recommendations will require students and guests that are in the classroom to be spaced at least six feet apart. Face coverings for teachers and students are required at the state level, strongly recommended by the cdc. Again, we heard from Vice President mike pence. He said the cdc will be issuing guidelines on reopening schools. He did mention none of the recommendations are intended to replace local guidelines, so it sounds like even at the federal level they will be deferring to what states decide. Allie rasmus.
