Reporter a Prison Health care worker expressed her frustration they were full and then they were empty and so i had to search where those people had been rehoused and that took me the better part of the day to find out that they had gone back to the regular housing unit. Reporter several dozen inmates have been released, but advocates say its not enough. And loved ones want releases to happen swiftly. I want to assure the state that i have a place for him to come home too. He will have transportation, financial support, and anything else he needs for reentry. Reporter san quentin is still beyond capacity, overcrowded with 70 of the inmates contracting the virus. Public defenders have filed 44 requests in superior court to get inmates let out. We intend to prove that the department of corrections insists on keeping people caged in these conditions. And it violates the eighth amendment. Reporter many of them are elderly with high risk conditions. Of the 53 the died, the average age is 54. And more than a dozen were set to be released this year or next. The state has done far too little to address moving that medically vulnerable to safety. Reporter an attorney has taken the state court and said he was shocked to learn about the inmates that were identified as high risk. And only eight have been released.
