David californias Community Schools reimagining public education. Fall. Our political reporter greg lee live now in our newsroom with the ongoing concerns, greg, about the senators health. Heather, good evening. The senators health has certainly been under a microscope following an extended absence earlier this year. She said previously she will not run for reelection in 2024 and intends to serve her full term despite some calls for her to step down. Senator Dianne Feinstein is back at her San Francisco home after a visit to the hospital. A spokesperson citing senator feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home. This is the latest Health Setback for the 90 year old senator. She was hospitalized for shingles in february, which led to a three month absence, including her missing a number of votes. It prompted calls for her to step down from within her own party, including from representatives ro khanna. Alexandra ocasiocortez and others. Calls also came from across the aisle. If you are 89 years old, if you are unable to function, if you are unable to do your job, its in the best interests of your constituents, but its in the best interest of the country that you step down in february. Feinstein the longest serving woman, senator in history, made clear she intends to serve out her full term lawmakers close to her, like former House Speaker nancy pelosi, have come to her defense. And political consultant Steve Vigliotti says that means something. They wonder without her vote in the senate, what could happen. Judges could be delayed. Democrats could lose important narrow votes. Where Kamala Harris has been in a few times. So think theyre looking at the big picture. And i think voters should look at the big picture to priorities submitted. Yeah, just say i okay. Just i feinstein had another moment when she appeared to be confused during a roll call vote. Her staff said she was preoccupied and it came on the heels of 81 year old Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell freezing during a news conference. You could have a perfectly functioning mind and a body that begins to fail. And then the reverse can also happen. So theres lots of variables that exists in the world of aging. The recent episodes have reignite a concern for the ages of lawmakers, Public Health professor and expert on aging Jay Olshansky says age is a poor barometer for health status, especially in politics. I understand why there are concerns. There are legitimate questions to ask, and theres no question that risks are higher as you get older. But oh my goodness, theres so many other very important things to be worried about. You dont have to look at peoples age. You have to look at their capacity to do the job. Now, the comments from lawmakers today, including congressman khanna, have been focused on senator feinsteins well being and quick recovery. Heather . Well, greg, we know that the senator has said that she plans to finish out her term, but if she does decide to step down before it ends, explain to viewers what would happen next. Yeah, heather, worth a reminder, it would be up to Governor Newsom to appoint a replacement for the remainder of her term. And thats where this could get tricky for newsom. Hes on record saying if given the opportunity, he would appoint a black woman to a senate vacancy. And as you know, theres currently a tight race for her seat in 2024. That includes a black woman, east bay congresswoman barbara lee. Hes also said he hopes feinstein does not resign. Everyone thinking of the senator tonight. All right, greg lee, t
