Lets check in with rosemary and find out what is cooking on this big weekend. How about cooking . We are going things up. Yes temperatures are expected to be a little bit warmer today compared to yesterday. And then sunday looks to be the warmer day midnineties for our hotter spots inland. And we will continue to climb into monday and tuesday. So a better look at the Current Conditions and what you can expect for your bay area weekend as well as the extended forecast coming up. Okay thank you, rosemary. Well, the official death toll in those catastrophic wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of maui climbed to 80 overnight. That number is expected to continue to rise in the coming days as search teams find more victims buried under collapsed buildings and inside gutted cars. This is already hawaiis deadliest Natural Disaster since it became a us state back in 1959. The wildfires have destroyed more than 1000 buildings, some of them local landmarks. And most of the deaths and destruction has been in the Historic Town of lahaina. Video now being posted on social media shows those terrifying early moments of this disaster on tuesday where people, as you can see there, were jumping into the ocean waters in a desperate attempt to escape those fast moving flames that gutted the town hall. Hurricane force winds created dangerous, choppy waves with the Us Coast Guard still managed to rescue about a dozen people despite those huge flames and that thick smoke in the area. They were fortunate to have been there during the rescues at a time when the smoke lifted for them to be able it was a diffica very challenging situation for our small boat crews from station maui. The Us Coast Guard says its crew members put their own lives in danger during this rescue at sea. Well, one family in lahaina who was preparing to move to the bay area shared some video of their neighborhood as they went back to take a look at all the damage. Ctvs Jana Katsuyama spoke with them and also talked to members of the bay areas Hawaiian Community who are planning relief efforts to help maui residents. This is why coulee. O oh my goodness, a heartbreaking sight driving home to lahaina, steph and kimo kirkman had been in the bay area when the wildfires tore through maui and rushing back. They saw their community in ashes and then they saw their home. There was no resemblance whatsoever of what we thought would be our house. That that was where our house was. All that was left was cinder blocks in their neighborhood, about three blocks from front street off lahainaluna road was destroyed. This is video they took of what was left of their house. This is my house. First, my oven. Everything we had in there is gone. Everything, including the familys two dogs and cat. We were told that the whole neighborhood went up within about 45 minutes. It was gone. So no one no one had a chance. And they say they learned their neighbors relatives are among the victims. It was really hard to be able to see peoples houses that we know that now theyre gone. The grief and loss hits close to the heart for hawaiians here in the bay area. Patrick lindsay of hayward is a well known musician whos won awards for playing hawaiian slack guitar. Hes working with the Bay Area Community groups now and businesses to organize fundraisers in the coming weeks. Its trader vics will be doing a fundraiser. Thank goodness the generosity of folks we theres also a donor thats going to help match those funds for the kirkman family and many others. It will be a long road to recover. They had been packed to move to Castro Valley, so chemo a hairstylist could take a job at the jute salon in palo alto. Now that move likely delayed until october as they try to sort out the damage and loss, we need to just move on so that we can get to Castro Valley so that he can work in palo alto and we can start our lives over again over Jana Katsuyama ktvu fox two news. Well teams of bay area volunteers went to lend a much needed helping hand residents on maui red cross volunteer tom tanner flew out of san jose yesterday. Hes part of a team trained to deal with disasters. The red cross says its preparing to expand relief efforts if need be. Tanners role will be to serve as the liaison, keeping critical information from Government Officials to the people who need it. My job, as i understand it and it may to coordinate what they think needs to be done by the red cross. And ive got a lot of people to help me. Both locally and in the local government. People are trained to deal with disasters. So its not just me. Im a part of the whole team. Since the fires began, the red cross and its partners have provided more than 2100 shelter beds for residents and tourists evacuated from maui. Its also providing food and emotional support. Happening today, as more news develops in hawaii from the Deadly Wildfires, one Bay Area Group is moving forward with a hawaiian themed festival. Ktvu james torres live from the San Mateo Event Center where the bay area aloha festival is set to kick off in just a few hours. Good morning to you, james. Claudine, good morning to you. Well, some would argue that right now is better than ever to celebrate some of the history and the culture of what hawaii brings. Organizers of the festival say theyre planning a moment of silence, pretty much right when the doors open, as well as having a ton of different resources for anyone who wants to continue to help some of the survivors and those who are still suffering over on the islands now we learn more every day on just how much destruction was left behind as a result of these fires. The island town of lahaina practically destroyed. We heard the stories of about 80 people dead, thousands of buildings, homes, offices destroyed. And we spoke to some folks from all over the bay area who talk about their connections to hawaii and some of what theyve lost there as well. And now since then, volunteer groups have been on the ground strike teams from all over the country, including from here in the bay area, continue to get supplies and information, as well as resources to the victims and to survivors. But here at the event center, organizers say theyre planning for a Hawaiian Airlines booth where people can make donations to those recovery efforts. Donations in the form of either cash money or even your miles as well. Those will help contribute to some of the flights moving people from different islands and even back here to the mainland. Its a Family Friendly event, so its still full of a lot of what you would normally see at some festivals. So entertainment, food, trucks, music, all of that. But as well as a little bit of offering some faith and hope for some of those survivors who are just a few hours away. Were live this morning from San Mateo County. Im james torres. Ktvu fox two news. All right, thank you, james. And we do have everything that you need to know regarding the wildfires in maui. Up on our website. You can also get some direct links there on how you can help. Thats a ktvu. All right, lets check in with rosemary now locally and get a little look at our forecast here. It looks a little gloomy, but i guess its going to heat up, right . Yeah. So we were looking at temperatures climbing into the 90s today for our inland cities yesterday, a lot of 80s. And then tomorrow even a bit warmer. Heres a look at Storm Tracker two where we have clouds along the coastline. Even the possibility of some patchy drizzle out there this morning. This is going to peel back. We are going to remain partly cloudy to mostly cloudy along the coastline. Well also see mid and high level clouds from time to time coming in from the south. The upper level flow is coming from this direction. Meanwhile, at the surface, we have a very weak onshore flow with just light winds and calm conditions. For most oakland reporting calm this morning. Fairfield, a very light onshore breeze, ten Miles Per Hour reported there. On to the temperatures where you can see here we are similar to where we started yesterday morning down by just a little bit in novato, down by four as well as napa, san jose, a few degrees cooler to start the day at 62. Meanwhile San Francisco checking in 59 degrees for you there and low 60s over livermore brentwood walnut creek and concord 60 degrees. Heres a look at the futurecast model into the afternoon in early evening hours. Again remaining partly to mostly cloudy along the coastline. But notice the moisture that is coming from this direction. Theres a very slim chance that a few scattered showers for lake tahoe today and for us, we could see an increase come sunday with that cloud cover could actually fill a little bit more muggy for tomorrow, giving you look at the afternoon highs for today compared to where we were yesterday. Santa rosa going to 86. Oakland 76. Livermore 93 and san jose, youre looking at 85. A better look at the afternoon highs for today as well as what we can expect for the rest of the weekend. Now the heat up that continues into next week. Coming up. Sounds good. Thank you, rosemary. Up next, yet another starbucks location in San Francisco voted to form a union. When we come back, the store location and the rising number of stores forming a union. Now in our side. Low temperatures go back some more. Well, outside lands is officially underway in the city as the festival continues. Today. Were going to talk about everything you need to know if youre going to head to the City New Police chief. The Police Commission is seeking public input on the qualities theyd like to see in their next leader. Its been six months since oakland mayor shengtao fired former chief laurent armstrong, saying shed lost confidence in him for his handling of the policeman. Columnist conduct cases. Commissioners responsible for vetting candidates and submitting a final choice to the city council and the mayor for approval if this final candidate is rejected. The entire process starts all over again. Todays first session is at the 81st Avenue Branch library. 1030 this morning. Second hearing starts at 2 p. M. West Oakland Branch library on adeline street. Meanwhile, the oakland naacp and other Community Leaders are linking oaklands public crime crisis to the firing of chief laurent armstrong. In a new open letter, the leaders call armstrong an extraordinary chief who grew up in oakland, knew the city and reduced crime. They say seven months after his firing, the city has still not hired a new chief due to internal disputes at the Police Review commission. And they repeated their urgent call for the mayor to declare a state of emergency. The statement added, quote, if the mayor wants to look at the root causes of oaklands 2023 crime crisis, we urge her to look in the mirror. Crime has mushrooms since she fired chief armstrong. We will work with anyone who wants to bring peace and safety to our city. We are glad the mayor now speaks of wanting to get involved. But words wont solve our problem. Start by declaring that oakland has a Public Safety emergency. Then take action. Happening today, a School District in the east bay is making sure their students have everything they need to go back to school. The hayward unified School District is hosting its Second Annual backpack giveaway event. Its going to include free backpacks filled with school supplies, haircuts, food and more. That event will be at the Parent Resource Center hub in hayward. Organizers say the event is all on a first come, first served basis. It starts at nine. Nearly 75,000 people fill Golden Gate Park in the city for day one of the annual three day festival outside land, celebrating its 15th year with more than 90 artists scheduled to perform more than 225,000 people are expected to attend this weekend with each day of the event. So filled out music fans from the bay area and beyond got to take it all in and catch some of their favorite artists perform on day number one. The music, the artists, they bring, the best artists around. Father john, mistys playing megan the stallions playing this weekend. Kendrick the foo fighters. Ive never seen. Im a huge 90s rock fan. This is my 10th year in a row actually. Ive never been here before. He asked me, i said, lets do it. And they did it in addition to its diverse lineup of musical performances, the festival is also known for its range of food options. Wrote more than 100 vendors all lined up to serve the large crowd. Some of the vendors say theyve been serving outside land since it all kicked off 15 years ago. Its really good every year that weve been here, the food really good. So good it feels like home. A little bit like all of us come back together after a year, like a year of not seeing each other. And every year the same crew comes. I mean, look. I mean, look at our view. Im like, i can just see Kendrick Lamars name right now. So its great. Speaking of which, Kendrick Lamar and z closed out night number one of the festival on friday. Now while the festival has not disappointed fans so far, outside lands organizers announced they would be closing the soma tent dance venue for safety reasons. The news came from the festival twitter account yesterday afternoon, but did not give a reason behind the closure. Some people on social media say part of the floor broke during a performance outside. Lance describes the soma tent as an attraction inspired by underground nightclub culture for the weekend schedule. Performers advice for getting around and more from outside lands. Check it out. A ktvu for everything. You need to need a need to have. All right. There we go. Time now is seven 618. As the clock turns to 717. Its so gray behind us. Behind you, rosemary. But things are changing. Yeah. So we do have a microclimate pattern in place for your weekend, and that includes outside lands being very, very mild and partly sunny to mostly cloudy for most of the weekend as well. Giving you a live look here at a lot of fog there. Cant even see the city of San Francisco at this time. That will begin to change. That fog is going to lift. And today is expected to be at least a few degrees warmer than yesterday. A view of Storm Tracker two, a little hard to pick up on whats going on out there. But if you notice the counterclockwise motion going on here. So we have a low just parked over areas of Southern California and the coastline there. The upper level flow around it is helping to draw in some moisture from the south. We also have it coming in from the desert southwest. What we know as the with us for the weekend, not really expecting any rain out of it, but that added moisture could make it feel a little sticky out there, especially for our warmer locations. The futurecast model picks up on it here. You may notice. And then as we get into your afternoon, partly to mostly cloudy closer to the coast and the west edge of San Francisco, where we have outside lands, we also have just a slight possibility of a few scattered showers over areas of tahoe this weekend. Today is very minimal. Were talking 10 tomorrow, a little bit more monday right now looks to be the best opportunity or risk for thunderstorms over the tahoe area. But we could see some additional cloud cover come our way on sunday as well. Temperatures in and around the bay area at this time. A lot like yesterday, even a little cooler for some 59 degrees to start your morning in San Francisco. Upper 50s in the north bay of napa. Good morning, livermore year 61. San jose, youre 62. And for the afternoon, if yourtly to mostlyd very mild temperatures by noontime 60 degrees mid 60s at 4 00 in the afternoon and then a sunset right about 810 this evening, 58 degrees with a little bit of an onshore breeze. So a little cool, little breezy for the second part of the day. There meanwhile, for the peninsula today, 85 in redwood city for the inner east bay. A lot of these folks enjoying some upper 80s yesterday. Today, were going to low 90s for you there low 80s in napa your extended forecast will show you temperatures continue to climb into your bay area sunday and it doesnt stop there.
