In the last half hour, caltrans reopened interstate 80 just hours ahead of the estimated reopening time of 5 a. M. Tomorrow. That freeway near hercules and vallejo had been closed on and off for four weekends over the summer. This is what it looked like shortly after 430 this afternoon, crews removed the barriers and traffic began to flow again. This is the final phase of a repaving project along interstate 80. Ktvu is Amanda Quintana has more now on the project. Crews have been doing major pavement repairs on i80 this summer, spreading the work over four weekends with Labor Day Weekend being the last step. The challenging stuff like pouring 9000yd t of concrete, 16 footbal fields worth that. Thats done the hearings in process. Weve got to do a lot of things like striping and cleaning up and making sure that the roadway is ready to handle traffic and that that takes a little while. The closure is on the westbound side starting at 780 and including the carquinas bridge, the detour takes drivers onto seven over 80 and vallejo past benicia and then onto 680 towards concord. They can then re enter 80 at highway for this detour has caused some headaches. We expect heavy traffic until we get this open. Its monday. People are getting ready to return from labor day. This is the first time in its 20 year history that the carquinas bridge has been closed. Many of us know it as the carquinas bridge, but its actually named the alfred zampa memorial bridge. After an ironworker that worked on multiple bridges here in the bay area. My gramps was a tough dude and very proud while working, zampa fell off the golden gate bridge, he slipped and fell into the net and the net sagged and hit the rocks on the marin side, and he broke several vertebrae in his back. He broke his pelvis. He was in the hospital for 12 weeks, but came back to continue his work. Its fitting that this current project wraps up on labor day honoring workers like zampa. Organized labor changed the course of history for my family, my grandfather getting in the Ironworkers Union men. He got good wages or good benefits. He retired on a Union Pension for 30 years. He retired at age 65 and lived to 95 on a Union Pension. While the bridge has been closed, caltrans has also been able to fix some of the lighting. Theyve been out since a fire three years ago. And that was Amanda Quintana reporting. While that stretch of west five west 80 is closed, workers were out this weekend clearing vegetation along the side of the freeway. Caltrans sharing video on social media here. The workers have the chainsaws out cutting down trees and thinning out the brush. It is the unofficial end of summer. Millions of americans spent this labor day getting in one more day under the sun. Despite triple digit temperatures around parts of the country. Be it is a little toasty for us. We tried to come out a little bit later in the afternoon, still getting caught in the sun, but were still enjoying it. Banks post offices, the stock market and government offices were all closed today and most Public Transit is running on a holiday or sunday schedule. Labor day is traditionally a day when labor unions are courted by politicians, and this year, some unions are feeling better about their prospects. Ktvu tom vacar joins us here in studio with more on the story. Tom, the reason why equal pay, better pay and fair work rules that are the main reasons unions are having most workers consider them now. At dallas airport, American Airlines employees rallied about the strike they just authorized. Employees say the airlines got billions in federal relief, but theyve gotten no raise since before the pandemic. Were all fighting corporate greed, record setting revenues, yet we are still here without a contract and a massive auto strike looms as well. You cant make 21 billion in profits in half a year and expect members to take a mediocre contract. 70 years ago in the heyday of unionization, more than a third of americans were union members. Today that number is just 6. But recent strikes and strike authorizations have mostly produced results for workers. The recent settlement of the ups contract late last month averted a major bottle neck in the us commerce and supply chains. Its the summer of workers. Oakland Assemblywoman Mia Bonta says a rising tide of Union Membership raises all boats. Its a very simple thing. When workers are lifted, every community is lifted, so this will catch fire because its what were all here for. Last fall, a gallup poll found the highest levels of Union Support since the 1960s. These days, about 71 of america approve of labor unions, up from just 28 in 2010. Gallup also found that about 10 of workers not in unions actually expressed extreme interest in joining a union. And polls show the generation z work hours age 24 and under provide the strongest support for the Union Concept and the president of the United States knows it by nomics is a blue collar blueprint for america. Its for you. You are our labor. Union. Labor for even now, the seven week long actor entertain or strike shows faith in the members that it will produce desired results. More money and more job security. This is going to be for the future of the unions, says a union country. We have to take care of our people when the middle class does well, everyone does well. Now, the biggest hurdles unions have to overcome with some nonunion folks is concerns of having slower advancement, less autonomy in the workplace, and a tension in the workplace. And obviously theyre working on it because they do see the possibility of getting more members tom vacar ktvu. Fox two news. All right, tom, thank you. More than mild temperatures in the 70s and low 80s today was pleasant. A little warmer than yesterday. Im going to the east coast. This is monday, 5 00 about now. And you can see where the heat is. Right. And so its cooled off a little bit. But this zone right in here has over a Million People, 1. 5 Million People all throughout this week. Theyre going to be under some kind of heat advisory or heat warning. So here we are on tuesday at 4 p. M, 102 in dallas, 97, in oklahoma, 92 with humidity in saint louis, and then again on wednesday afternoon, noon, and then again on thursday. So its been, i want to say, unprecedented. Some some towns it is some records are being set. Theyre unprecedented. But this this run of heat is super impressive. And again, youre encompassing millions of people under advisories. And the reason i bring this up is not just because weve been cool, but heat is the thing in weather, right . And if youre older or or or young or unhoused, it can be devastating. But for us, weve had a whole different deal. Weve got this sort of quasi stationary trough. See, thats what thats a thats this is the big trough here. And then this is like a little shortwave kind of riding in on the trough. This is a little shortwave here to those are those will create disturbances like you get a counterclockwise spin like a vorticity to them and these things will create, in our case , the showers we saw out in the playa
