Cloudy start to the day. You can see a little bit of patchy fog out there as we take a view towards San Francisco. High clouds overhead as well, and as we get into the afternoon, a low clouds will return to the coastline as well as an uptick in the onshore breeze. Right now, the winds are light, even calm across the bay area. A pretty start to the day, with temperatures ranging from upper 40s to upper 50s. 46 right now at Half Moon Bay, 54 in livermore and in the north bay 51 in napa. We are going to go above average once again for today, but we are going to be a little bit cooler than yesterday, especially closer to the coast and just inside the bay, where again, we begin to see a transition to that cooler pattern. 78 seven santa rosa for the afternoon, 71 in oakland, 79 for san jose. A better look at the afternoon highs for today and the cooling trend that kicks off coming up in just a little bit at 701. Lets check on the slow and go out there this morning with sal. Hi sal. Rosemary right now we still have some slow traffic on highway four. Thats where were going to start this time because of a much earlier crash on the willow pass grade. Actually not that much earlier. About an hour ago, they removed it from the lanes, but the traffic is backed up all the way into pittsburgh, almost into antioch. As a result. Also, looking at the bay bridge, you can see that traffic is backed up to the maze and Golden Gate Bridge. We want to keep an eye on that. As you know, the no Ferry Service right now between sausalito and San Francisco. We might expect more people to drive, but we havent noticed anything. An uptick in the traffic. It still looks like it normally does, moving smoothly. 701 lets get back to the headlines. Well, happening today, still no Ferry Service between San Francisco and sausalito and still no word on when that service between the two cities will resume. Ktvu james torres live at the Ferry Terminal in sausalito, where apparently busses are filling in for those ferries. James acosta good morning to you here. When you come up to the Ferry Terminal and its very obvious that, you know, need to be here, need to stay away from this point here. You see the caution tape thats blocking off some of the pier and several signs saying theres a service alert. That ferry is not happening right now. Services are still suspended. And heres what theyre telling us. Right now. The pier here in sausalito. Theres something wrong with that. So much so that the ferries cant dock here. And its been that way since friday. Thats when ferry Officials Say during a routine inspection, they found enough damage on the pier, enough to deem it unusable for the ferry to pick up. And drop people off. They say the damage led to a structural compromise of the pier, but we havent really learned more details, more than that. Still no word on what caused that damage, nor exactly what that damage is. But what we do know its bad news for people who use the ferry on a regular basis, especially to commute to San Francisco for work every morning. Yeah, it makes it a lot harder. You know, we have a lot of people come and visit a lot of commuters that use it. A lot of the tourists use it. We have a lot of tourists that come over on bikes and take the ferry back. You know, theyre going to have to get on busses now, which is going to be really problematic. Yeah. You hear the mention that the temporary solution here is the Ferry Service offering a bus bridge between the two cities via golden gate transit. They suggest you give yourself plenty of extra time if that is an option you plan to take. Well take you back. Live right out here at the Ferry Terminal. We start to see some of those busses showing up this morning. Some people who are taking advantage of that this morning, this Ferry Service is announcing those bus bridges day by day without giving us much of a timeline for how long the service will be suspended. But Officials Say you can keep an eye on the ferries x account for any updates. Were live this morning in sausalito. Im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. Thank you james. A motorcyclist is in the hospital after a crash during a sideshow near oaklands lake merritt. New housing will be unveiled in san jose today that supporters say will help address the homelessness crisis. The 130 unit complex is located not far from diridon station and is meant to help people who could have had trouble affording market rate housing. Half of the units have been designated as permanent supportive housing, which will serve people on section eight vouchers. The remaining units will be restricted to households earning 50 to 60 of the area median income. Today, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments in a landmark case on homelessness that could impact the bay area. It involves the city of grants pass, oregon. The high court will decide whether people can be cited and fined for sleeping on the streets. The potential impact here in california is significant. A lawsuit over homelessness sweeps or homeless sweeps, rather in San Francisco, is currently on hold pending a decision. In that case. So the breadth of the potential of the effect of this decision really, really is enormous in terms of the day to day lives of not only the homeless but the way people experience life in their own neighborhoods, in their on their own shopping streets, their own parks. Advocates say this is the most important Supreme Court case to address homelessness. Federal courts have previously ruled that outdoor sleeping and camping bans violate the constitutions eighth amendment, which prevents cruel and unusual punishment. Its cruel and unusual to tell a person whos homeless, whos sleeping outdoors that he has to move, he cant sleep there, or hes going to be arrested. Its a its a its an abuse of the constitution which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. Governor gavin newsom filed a letter with the court supporting grants pass as part of a push for clarity on what local governments can do to confront the homelessness crisis. Governor newsom is launching another ad campaign targeting abortion restrictions in red states, this time in alabama. Were almost there. Youre gonna make it. Mass. Im gonna need you to step out of the vehicle, take a pregnancy test. The ad is called the fugitive. It depicts a woman being arrested for trying to leave the state to get an abortion. It was created by the campaign for democracy, a Political Action committee created by Governor Newsom. It begins appearing today in alabama, where republicans have called for prosecuting women who travel out of state for an abortion, a plan to build a high speed rail system between Southern California and las vegas is set to take a big step forward today. The Company Behind the brightline west is officially breaking ground today. Construction was originally scheduled to start in 2020, but then it was delayed by financing issues. The company says passengers will be able to get from la to vegas in less than three hours. When its finished, and the goal is to be finished by the summer of 2028, in time for the olympics in la. Time now is 707, and right now we do see a bunch of slowing on highway four caused by an earlier crash on the concord side of the willow pass grade. Its pulled off the lanes. It may still be visible there and causing people to slow down, and traffic is backed up just as you leave antioch and get into pittsburg, which is a lot longer than usual. Bay bridge has a bigger backup as well, so it looks like finally, a lot of those spring breaks are over. Weve been keeping an eye on the Golden Gate Bridge just to see if theres any uptick in traffic. There has not been, with the sausalito ferry being out, it really hasnt affected traffic. And this is a look at interstate 880 in oakland. That looks pretty good. When we come back, well take a look more at that Silicon Valley commute at 708. Lets go back to the desk. Thank you. Sal happening today, earth day. Some people are using the occasion to advocate for a plant based diet. Demonstrators marched across the golden gate this weekend to promote a vegan lifestyle. Members of the San FranciscoVegan Society say that a plant based diet helps combat climate change. The group is also trying to pressure elected leaders to endorse the International Plant based treaty, which would end subsidies to meat and dairy industries. We wanted to take this opportunity to ask people in celebration of earth day to give veganism a try. It really is the very best diet for the planet. Oh yeah. The plant based treaty also seeks to halt the expansion of animal farms while restoring key ecosystems like. A dead whale off the alameda coast. What ktvu has learned about the plan to remove it from the water. Opening statements are about to get underway in the first ever criminal trial against a us president with a former president , President Trump said just minutes ago, as he walked into the courtroom begin in a socalled hush money trial. Ktvu. Andre senior back in studio with what to expect. Andre. Well, gasia donald trump spoke to reporters in the hallway of the courtroom this morning complaining about having to be in court instead of out on the campaign trail. This is done as election interference. Everybody knows it. Im here. Instead of being able to be in pennsylvania and georgia and lots of other places campaigning, and its very unfair. 12 jurors will decide whether or not donald trump falsified Business Records to cover up an alleged sex scandal during the 2016 president ial campaign. Trumps legal team is expressing confidence as long as the jury focuses on the facts, as long as the jury can see through all the Media Coverage and all the sensation ism, and focus on the actual facts at issue in this case, we believe we have a winning case. The jury of seven men and five women include a Software Engineer and an english teacher and an investment banker. There are also two lawyers on the jury, which experts say is unusual. Prosecutors notoriously dont like seating lawyers on juries precisely because they are independent thinkers who often think they know better than the prosecutors do. I think its not a good thing for a defendant because of the influence that can be exercised over the jury. I feel like its. Bloomberg reports that donald trump spent 4. 9 million on legal fees last month, and has just 6. 8 million left in the accounts hes been using to fund his lawyers. The trial is limiting trumps time on the campaign trail. Hes required to be in court, and the trial is scheduled for four days a week, with only wednesdays left open. And experts say this trial could last for as long as two months. So the challenge for the Trump Campaign is how do you campaign in a situation like that, especially when a lot of the news coming out of the courtroom is bad for trump . The judge promising ruling this morning before Opening Statements and what prosecutors can bring up if trump testifies, which he has said hed like to do now, several Media Outlets report that the first witness for the prosecution in the trial will be david pecker, the former publisher of the national enquirer. Prosecutor say he helped cover up potential damaging stories about trump ahead of the 2016 president ial campaign. Claudine. All right. Thank you. Andre. Well, this week, the Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether former President Trump can claim immunity for any act committed while in office. Past Supreme Court rulings held a president cannot be liable in civil cases, but the court has never weighed in on the question of criminal prosecution. In this case stems from trumps indictment over his role in trying to overturn the 2020 president ial election. Columbia university has announced that all classes will be held virtually today, after days of protests at that school that have raised safety concerns for the universitys jewish students. More than 100 people have been arrested since the propalestinian protest began last week on the schools campus in new york city. The universitys president said in a statement that while classes are being held online, a working group of deans, University Administrators and faculty members will try to bring this crisis to a resolution soon for jewish people around the world. Passover begins at sundown today. The holiday celebrates the exodus of the israelites from slavery in biblical egypt. But in israel, many people say this year there is little to celebrate with dozens of hostages taken from israel still held by hamas amid increasing tensions in the middle east. Some relatives of the hostages set up a table in tel aviv with play settings for their missing family members in the last half a year. We are trying to get my sister out. With the recent attacks and counterattacks between israel and iran, israeli troops are now being positioned along the entire length of israels borders. Well, the 61 billion aid package for ukraine passed by the house over the weekend, is giving a morale boost to ukrainian soldiers. In part, the new aid will be direct military and humanitarian grants to the country, and its also going to replenish the ammo stocks depleted in there after those rounds were sent to the ukraine. After weeks in recent weeks, ukrainian troops have been forced to withdraw from the front lines as theyve been running low on ammo and other supplies. Thats the question of life and death. So from humanitarian point of view, this decision will help to save, i think, thousands of lives plus, it gives a chance for ukraine to continue the fight. The senate could vote on the aid package as soon as tomorrow. President biden has promised to sign it immediately. Well, the Charles Schultz airport in Sonoma County is hiring more staff, and thats ahead of an increase in service next month. Now, there are reports that dozens of workers are being hired before Avelo Airlines opens its new base at that airport on may 1st. That expansion will double its routes to kalispell, montana. Boise, idaho. Salem, oregon. And pasco, washington. And less than a week later, American Airlines is planning to resume its Seasonal Service to dallas, switching from a smaller plane to a larger airbus jet. 717 lets run out to the traffic center, see what Sal Castaneda is keeping his eye on today. Sal. All right, garcia and claudine, right now we do see the east bay traffic is pretty filled in almost everywhere, so theres not a holiday. Looks like all the spring breaks are over. If im just judging by what i see on the traffic bay bridge backed up to the mays metering lights are on. Weve been keeping a close eye on the Golden Gate Bridge, so far. It hasnt been affected at seemingly by any of that Ferry Service. Not going. Some people are using a bus instead. This is a look at interstate 880 in oakland. That looks okay. San mateo bridge traffic is moderately heavy now. Weve also been keeping an eye on some of the south bay commutes, and those commutes are still looking pretty good. Theres some slowing on 101 and two, 80 and 85, but as you can see, its not filled in quite yet. And maybe it wont be for another 30 or 40 minutes or so. Well keep an eye on it for you. 718 lets talk about todays weather. Heres rosemary. All right sal good morning. Happy monday, happy earth day. We have a beautiful forecast for you. We will be above average once again, although not quite as warm for many folks as the low clouds and the onshore breeze expected to return later today. A live look there over parts of the city of San Francisco and inside the bay. A little bit of patchy fog. We had high clouds overhead earlier this morning, but now we can see some blue sky as well. Storm tracker two here. Ridge is going to be pushed aside by a trough that begins to settle in. Heres a look at the future cast, stopping it for you tomorrow morning. Theres a look at the low well off the coastline, but you can see along the coastline a lot of fog and clouds out there. Again, the onshore breeze will return, as well as the possibility of patchy drizzle in the coming days. Wednesday looks to be a partly sunny, mostly cloudy day, then thursday into friday, a second trough dropping in. And take a look at that. Weve got blue not only over the Pacific Northwest, but parts of california as well, calling for a slight chance of scattered showers in the forecast for us thursday into friday, and the sierra could get 1 to 2, maybe three inches of snow. Heres a look into friday, where were not expecting much out of this, but enough to get us wet. So a little bit of patchy drizzle for the week ahead, as well as scattered showers by thursday night and friday. Temperatures across the bay area at this time 55 degrees in San Francisco for the inner e
