Starts now. Good evening. Im julie julie haener and im mike mibach. We begin with some dangerous driving in the bay areas two most populated cities. In san jose, a cyclist was killed in a crash that shut down a major thoroughfare for hours. The suspect is now in custody and facing multiple charges. Ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary joins us now. Hes at the intersection of east capitol expressway and center road with the latest. Jesse, what can you tell us . Julie, good evening to you. And just within the past few minutes, San Jose Police telling us that suspect you mentioned was arrested with a weapon. He was tackled to the ground by bystanders until police could come and put the handcuffs on him. The intersection that was closed reopened around 130 this morning. This after a chaotic and congested morning following a collision that cost a cyclist his life. Reporter from sky fox, the mess littering the intersection of east capitol expressway and center road speaks to a collision and death. San jose police say was preventable. Every collision is preventable, right . Thats why they called them accidents. But its not really an action. Theres some type of vehicle code that was violated that if not violated, then the action would have occurred. Investigators say around 730 tuesday morning, the driver of this red pickup truck was moving at a high rate of speed westbound on capital expressway. He ran a red light and collided first with a cyclist and then with the driver of this white pickup truck, both of whom had a green light northbound on center road. The collision killed the cyclist and strewn debris across the intersection, shutting down traffic in all directions for hours. The bus did not, pick up my great grandson from school on time. She was like ten minutes late and she said it was a problem on capital and center. And after that i seen that, the traffic was all backing up. They were walking the street. Neighbor Esther Barron says this intersection is dangerous because drivers dont always stop for red lights. That, coupled with the three lanes of traffic in each direction on both capital and center and the turning lanes brings a large volume of vehicles to one point, sometimes at high speeds. Theyre always rushing to work and theres always a lot of kids around here because they go to school, police say the driver of the red pickup truck was arrested after the crash, and is facing multiple charges. The driver of the white pickup truck suffered nonlife threatening injuries. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. I think everybody just needs to be aware. I think, road safety is everyones responsibility, so it includes being defensive on your own, right . Im not sure that theres a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here, if youre following the rules of the road, somebody wasnt. And unfortunately, thats what occurred. The name of the cyclist will be released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner once his family is notified. Police say this is the 17th fatal collision of the year so far here in san jose. And city Officials Say while this is not the number one intersection for collisions, it is among the top intersections for collisions. Were live in the seven trees section of san jose this evening. Jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. Julie, back up to you. All right jesse, thank you. And tonight in San Francisco, a man is in custody after police say he hit two people with his car in two separate incidents. One of the victims, a 14 Year Old Girl who was walking to school. Ktvu christian captain live tonight there at market and jones in the city where the story began with the car hitting a man and then taking off. Christian. Yeah, mike, we have been following this crazy story since this morning. If you take a look, here we are at the intersection of market and jones. And if you look carefully, you can see some of the burnout left possibly by that incident here this morning. It all began here when that driver hit an urban alchemy worker. Police say that that same driver then went on to hit a 14 Year Old Girl near her school. A wild chase and two hit and runs ended with a collision here at embarcadero and green street in San Francisco. But police say the story started here at the intersection of jones and market. At around 7 50 a. M. Police say a driver in a white mustang was spinning donuts in this intersection and collided with a worker from urban alchemy, then sped away. Police responded to the area and say the victim was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Investigators also say that a witness was able to provide detailed information about the white mustang, including a license plate number. Later on, at approximately 920, officers observed the suspect vehicle continuing, continuing to drive recklessly and committing multiple vehicle violations. Police say those officers tried to pull over the mustang, but instead of stopping, the driver sped off with officers in pursuit. That pursuit led to Francisco Middle School, where the driver of the mustang hit a 14 Year Old Girl crossing in the crosswalk. The pursuing officers stopped to help that girl. She, too, was taken to the hospital with what were hearing were nonlife threatening injuries. San francisco unified schools released a statement reading in part, quote this morning, a Francisco Middle School student was struck by a car while walking in the crosswalk on their way to class. At around 9 30 a. M, the student was in stable condition and with their family. Officers say continuing to pursue the mustang was too dangerous. The driver too erratic and too careless. Its based on the fact that the individual fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian, and continued to drive recklessly and failed to stop at another vehicle collision involving a juvenile pedestrian. He posed a risk to the public. Officers say the suspect ultimately crashed at embarcadero and green, about three quarters of a mile from where he struck that 14 Year Old Girl. Officers say they were then able to arrest him. Investigators say he, too, was transported to the hospital with injuries. They say were not related to the multiple crashes in which they say he was involved. In. At this point, investigators arent releasing the name of that driver or saying where hes from. They say multiple felony charges are pending. Live in San Francisco, Christien Kafton ktvu fox two news. All right, christian, thank you for that. A fire blew right through an Apartment Building in oakland this afternoon. It was first reported at 130 at the corner of sixth avenue and east eighth street. Dozens of firefighters responded. They were able to get this one under control in just about 90 minutes. The flames spread to a nearby Single Family home, both buildings suffering significant damage, no injuries reported and no word how many people have been displaced. The cause is not yet known. New at five tonight, the Alameda County das office said that Holding People accountable is its highest priority as it released its annual report today. Da pamela price said in her first year in office, prosecutors saw a slight rise in the number of reports from local Law Enforcement. At just under 12,000. About 63 of those resulted in a case being filed. The office said they are working to provide data on specific charges and outcomes, but price said that cases resolved through the Alameda CountyNarcotics Task force rose from 66 in 20 22 to 80 7 in 2023. We know that this is an important moment for the residents of Alameda County who have just barely begun to see the work that we are doing and that we will continue to do to protect public safety. Price also touted a new organized retail theft team that started in 2023 with a 2 million grant from the governor. This report comes as the District Attorney is facing a recall fueled by claims that the office is not pursuing maximum charges in cases of Violent Crime happening now, new protests in some major cities across the country calling on the Israeli Government not to move forward with its invasion of rafah. Tonight, sky fox was overhead. One of those rallies in uc berkeley, sproul plaza, the demonstration involving a few hundred people here, as you can see, began just around 4 00 this afternoon. No word on how long its going to continue. Israel is under more scrutiny from protesters across the country after rejecting a cease fire deal that hamas had accepted. The Israeli Government said the proposal did not meet its demands. Today, university of Chicago Police began clearing a propalestinian encampment at the schools hyde park campus. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or arrests. Tensions rose over the weekend between propalestinian supporters and counterprotests. Others who have displayed israeli flags on the quad. Officials say the protest had crossed a line and caused concerns concerns rather about safety. Also, protests continue at George Washington university. Thats where students are preparing in case police come to arrest them. Today they were seen practicing locking arms and dead waiting across the country. An estimated 2600 people have been arrested since these protests began last month. The white house is urging israel not to move forward with the rafah offensive. Even so, President Biden, doubling down on his support for israel and strongly condemning antisemitism. Foxs Rebecca Castro reports on the president s speech at a Holocaust Memorial ceremony, and how the us support for israel is dividing many here in america. Never again simply translated for me means never forget President Biden vowing to never forget the 6 million jews killed during world war two, and those killed by hamas on october 7th during a holocaust day of remembrance ceremony on capitol hill. The president also took aim at protests popping up on College Campuses around the country, some of which have featured hateful rhetoric towards jews. There is no place on any campus in america, any place in america, for antisemitism or hate speech. As israels war with hamas continues, President Biden reiterated his ironclad support for the jewish state even as its military moves into the city of rafah, something the president has tried to deter israel from doing. This appears to be a limited operation, but of course, it that much of that depends on what comes next. Israels actions in rafah and the president s support is also causing divisions on capitol hill. And some democrats are calling on President Biden to take a tougher stance. My great hope is that we that the United States and that the president does not allow this horrific tragedy to happen with us support. It appears that hamas has consolidated itself in that one section of rafah. This is an opportunity for israel to take out that infrastructure. As the Israeli Military continues its operation in rafah, delegations from israel and hamas are in egypt, continuing discussions on a proposed cease fire. But its unclear if the two sides are close to an agreement in washington. Rebecca kaster ktvu, fox two news. Tiktok is suing the Us Government over a law that would force the apps chinese owner to sell the company or face a ban here in the us, the lawsuit claims. The law, passed last month, violates the First Amendment by effectively denying millions of americans access to an app they use to share their views. Us lawmakers say theyre concerned tiktoks parent company, bytedance, could share sensitive user data with the chinese government. In the last hour, we did speak with legal analyst and law professor Jessica Levinson about whether tiktok has a legitimate case. I think the first question is, what are we going to treat this as . Is this truly a ban . Because because what the Us Government has said is divest or its a ban. And so the first question is, is that divestment a true choice . Will a court say that this isnt a ban . The lawsuit will likely further delay any momentum towards a ban of tiktok heartbreak in the east bay, after a mother and 911 dispatcher is killed by an alleged drunk driver ahead at 530. What those who knew her best say they will remember the most. Plus is this possibly one of the solutions to the mass transit problem of getting people to ride it and ride it more often . With usps ground advantage®. ominous music yes, ahh mom what is going on with you . Get out andy get out of my room get out mom andy. Fight fight i didnt say anything. Yes you did. ominous music ominous music of tents, temporary structures and encampments in San Francisco last month 360. Tents and structures were reported. That is, down from 609 that accounted last summer. Important to note here the count does not reflect the actual homeless population. And people we spoke with in the city had mixed reactions to the new numbers. There was a lot last couple of months, i think reducing more less noticed, fewer tents. Yes. I dont believe i feel like it increased. I would say its just the same old, you know, the same amount of homelessness and issues that have always been here. The Mayors Office credits the decline in the number of tents on city streets to their outreach efforts. The city was also given more Legal Authority to clear tents in encampments. When the ninth Circuit Court of appeals said San Francisco could compel people not to sleep or camp in public areas if they had them a shelter bed. Of course, ceasefire is the strategy that were operating off of. We know it works. You know, we have homicides that are down by 17. We want to continue that roadmap. And so with that being said, hes already being trained up in all of these different strategies. The first order is Crime Reduction. Ktvu is tom vacar shows us a homegrown solution that will soon be under construction in contra costa county. Thank you. At san ramons bishop ranch roadhouse tuesday, the ninth annual redefining mobility summit showed off what it calls the Autonomous Vehicle of the future and the star of the show. The glide aways, glide car, part of a scalable, expandable Mass Transit System coming soon. This is something that you can actually see and feel and experience later in a few minutes. When fully completed, the system will be 28 miles long. The dedicated, narrow roadway system will stretch from antioch to oakley, with 56 boarding stations. The first phase is about four and a half to five miles, but connecting antioch bart station to brentwood. That first phase will open in three years, with 200 autonomous glide cars servicing points or stations, as theyre called every few blocks along the dedicated concrete pathway. And so you can take a glide car in the future by walking maybe five minutes, going to an access point, which is a station, a glide phase station. Once at the pick up point, you use your app to hail a driverless glide car, much as you would an uber or lyft, a car dedicated to your trip and your trip only for a party of up to four or baggage or a bike. And it takes you to the antioch bart station without ever stopping. Always a predictable journey. Time because building this, even with a dedicated pathway, is very light construction. It can be done very quickly and it can be done far, far cheaper than dedicated rail systems. And in that sense it is superior. Its way, way cheaper than putting in railway tracks, even if it costs 1 billion a mile to build a 28 mile system, thats 28 billion. Thats just math. Our system is going to cost a fraction ten, 20 of that. Another glide waste project is to set up a system to connect san jose airport to rail transit. Tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news reporter. Thats interesting, isnt it . Sort of interesting to see that kind of transportation up on the on the table as we go forward here, were going to see temperatures warming. They did warm today. They came up a good 5 to 8 degrees. Theyre going to warm again tomorrow and the next day. And we could see temperatures by friday and saturday potentially. I mean theyll be just nudging it. But potentially into the low 90s. Well low 90s 90 degree. We may go 8990 degrees inland valleys i think sacramento theyll pop 90 which would be their first 90 of the of the season, which would probably be mothers day. They could hit 90. The valley is going to get pretty warm and that seems hot. You know, as you look live outside. Weve got some wind to talk about. The wind advisory, keeping the atmosphere pretty, pretty clean. Just beautiful. There is a little bit of haze going on out there. The fog got scoured off of the coast because of the strong winds are coming around this high. The High Pressure winds are going to continue, which will mean that theyre going to start clocking more north northeast. And that heats us up. That also takes the fog and just pushes it away from the coast and thats what was happening. A north wind just kind of slides it out. Thats thats almost dew. Thats like a north northwest. Itll kind of go more north north. It would be more north. I dont know how much east were going to see, but either way, what im trying to fogs gone. Fog is gone, High Pressure stays. And we warm up 80s and low 90s in the Central Valley and our inland fringe areas could easily make it to 90 degrees, especially as we get into friday. So well see. And with that, of course, the wind advisory. Thats the mechanism really. Or the high is the mechanism. The wind advisory is the result of the high and that wind is going to be sinking. So its going to be warming. And thats why temperatures will warm up. And again strong north winds, dry conditions a little. Theres a little fire component there. Not to not to freak you out. I dont think well see a fire advisory. But its an interesting, pattern. I will see you back here. Well do the full forecast, and well go looking for rain. All right, bill, thank you. So officials are keeping media at bay. Were still looking for unaccounted people. We have those hazards nails, debris, whatever you want to call it. Its there. The toughest thing on me as the mayor is this is a small community. I know 75 to 80 of the people in this town. Im the individual that that we lost. I knew him very well, and its pretty tough. This is just one area that is full of the destruction in the catastrophic destruction from this twister that came in last night in this tornado emergency. And you see some of the people that are trying to bring out some of the belongings here this morning and all of this area just ravaged this town of about a thousand people north of tulsa. And you see this is what were dealing with here this morning. Aluminum just strewn everywhere. Preliminary ef three. It could be higher as National Weather service will be out here. Were alive, were alive, were alive. Thank god were alive. This is still a very fluid situation, it is very raw. Guys, i am reporting on the ground here in oklahoma, Robert Ray Fox weather. I think its so dangerous about. The nocturnal tornadoes. Severe weather is. I mean, this type of thing where you can only pick it up on a radar, and thats not always certain. So at night, you just cant see it coming. And thats thats terrifying, im sure. And thats why i think its you know, we saw that coming last night. It was going to get dark. And this thing still usually you need the sun to heat the ground to get the convection really flying. And to get a tornado. But when you get these really strong upper air supported storms with some real cold air behind it, you get these nocturnal tornadoes that are terrifying. So we dont have anything like that to think about. We have nice weather out outside. You can see the campanile over here, right . And i think you can see the little cursor and then you can see, these call those the shaklee buildings over the holiday inn was over there in emeryville, i dont think i dont think its called the shaklee buildings anymore. The High Pressure there it is sticking around and its going to kind of nudge a little bit as it nudges in. These isobars will turn and the winds will come more offshore. And thats why were calling for a warm up. Its also why we got a wind advisory that will go into effect because as those winds turn south, the Central Valley topography lays out. Theres the west slope of the sierra nevada, theres the coastal range, and its all the way down, right, all the way down. So the winds get funneled in that and theres a funneling. They not only are they coming down and being compressed, right, because they get funneled, because they hit the topography, but they also accelerate when they get funneled like that. Theres kind of a venturi effect that goes on when they get sped up. So that is going to be tonight, late into wednesday into thursday morning for the Central Valley, mainly for us. Its going to be about warming up. Well see temperatures potentially into the upper 80s, certainly, and then maybe a couple 90s, couple 90 degree readings potentially, especially for our inland spots. But most of us will be warm, itll be noticeable and Sacramento Valley will get some 90s and their first 90s of the year. And if you havent experienced, you know, we havent really had any 90s. So when you get them, it does. Its normal in the summer, but this time of year its a little early. So its going to be noticeable. Right now temperatures are running ahead of where they were last night at this time by a few degrees. And then the bulls eye for wind is right here. Thats wednesday morning. Thats wednesday afternoon. And thats out in the valley right out east of napa. And then thursday it keeps going in the morning, and then its goes away in the afternoon. These are the forecast highs for tomorrow. And you see them right there. You got 80 and antioch 80. And fairfield 82. In santa rosa that would be the warm spot. And then the five day forecast. So its a good one. Itll be interesting to see what happens. Its like thursday might be our warmest day of the week in the inland valleys. I think sunday will be pretty warm, but not as i think a little fog will come back to the coast. Ill see you back here in 6 00. Nice and dry. All right, bill, thank you. A bit of bay area sports history will be made tonight at san joses paypal park. When the earthquakes host the oakland roots in a u. S. Open cup match. And obviously in a competitive, match up. And obviously the first one in the bay, its huge. Everybodys going to be up for it. This is a game we take personal. Its a local derby. Foxs chris dimeo takes a closer look at why the erratic weather is a big concern, specifically for the farming industry. While science class taught us that plants need h2o to grow, there can definitely be a thing as too much water. Youre just looking for that sweet spot at, and its getting more erratic as human caused Climate Change continues driving up global temperatures, Scientists Say its increasing moisture levels in the atmosphere, setting the stage for harsher and wetter storms. Its creating anxiety for farmers, especially across the midwest, which has seen a 5 to 15 increase in spring rainfall throughout the past three decades, according to federal data. Were really focused on our soil health and adding more organic matter to the soil, and that makes the soil more resilient to excessive water for too many days of intense rain at the start of the planting season, can make fields too soggy, preventing farmers from working their land under tight deadlines. You get a bunch of rain up front, the delays planting, which that leads to, can lead to possibility of yield loss because youre just lacking sunlight. Youre just lacking growing days. While delays in planning can set back harvests, even if the crops make it into the ground, they can be killed or damaged. If the fields wind up flooding. As the season goes on, im going to have to scrap a few things. Were gonna have to take things out. But that diversity gives us resiliency.
