And just within the past few minutes, San Jose Police telling us that suspect you mentioned was arrested with a weapon. He was tackled to the ground by bystanders until police could come and put the handcuffs on him. The intersection that was closed reopened around 130 this morning. This after a chaotic and congested morning following a collision that cost a cyclist his life. Reporter from sky fox, the mess littering the intersection of east capitol expressway and center road speaks to a collision and death. San jose police say was preventable. Every collision is preventable, right . Thats why they called them accidents. But its not really an action. Theres some type of vehicle code that was violated that if not violated, then the action would have occurred. Investigators say around 730 tuesday morning, the driver of this red pickup truck was moving at a high rate of speed westbound on capital expressway. He ran a red light and collided first with a cyclist and then with the driver of this white pickup truck, both of whom had a green light northbound on center road. The collision killed the cyclist and strewn debris across the intersection, shutting down traffic in all directions for hours. The bus did not, pick up my great grandson from school on time. She was like ten minutes late and she said it was a problem on capital and center. And after that i seen that, the traffic was all backing up. They were walking the street. Neighbor Esther Barron says this intersection is dangerous because drivers dont always stop for red lights. That, coupled with the three lanes of traffic in each direction on both capital and center and the turning lanes brings a large volume of vehicles to one point, sometimes at high speeds. Theyre always rushing to work and theres always a lot of kids around here because they go to school, police say the driver of the red pickup truck was arrested after the crash, and is facing multiple charges. The driver of the white pickup truck suffered nonlife threatening injuries. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. I think everybody just needs to be aware. I think, road safety is everyones responsibility, so it includes being defensive on your own, right . Im not sure that theres a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here, if youre following the rules of the road, somebody wasnt. And unfortunately, thats what occurred. The name of the cyclist will be released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner once his family is notified. Police say this is the 17th fatal collision of the year so far here in san jose. And city Officials Say while this is not the number one intersection for collisions, it is among the top intersections for collisions. Were live in the seven trees section of san jose this evening. Ktvu christian captain live tonight there at market and jones in the city where the story began with the car hitting a man and then taking off. Christian. Yeah, mike, we have been following this crazy story since this morning. If you take a look, here we are at the intersection of market and jones. And if you look carefully, you can see some of the burnout left possibly by that incident here this morning. It all began here when that driver hit an urban alchemy worker. Police say that that same driver then went on to hit a 14 Year Old Girl near her school. A wild chase and two hit and runs ended with a collision here at embarcadero and green street in San Francisco. But police say the story started here at the intersection of jones and market. At around 7 50 a. M. Police say a driver in a white mustang was spinning donuts in this intersection and collided with a worker from urban alchemy, then sped away. Police responded to the area and say the victim was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Investigators also say that a witness was able to provide detailed information about the white mustang, including a license plate number. Later on, at approximately 920, officers observed the suspect vehicle continuing, continuing to drive recklessly and committing multiple vehicle violations. Police say those officers tried to pull over the mustang, but instead of stopping, the driver sped off with officers in pursuit. That pursuit led to Francisco Middle School, where the driver of the mustang hit a 14 Year Old Girl crossing in the crosswalk. The pursuing officers stopped to help that girl. She, too, was taken to the hospital with what were hearing were nonlife threatening injuries. San francisco unified schools released a statement reading in part, quote this morning, a Francisco Middle School student was struck by a car while walking in the crosswalk on their way to class. At around 9 30 a. M, the student was in stable condition and with their family. Officers say continuing to pursue the mustang was too dangerous. The driver too erratic and too careless. Its based on the fact that the individual fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian, and continued to drive recklessly and failed to stop at another vehicle collision involving a juvenile pedestrian. He posed a risk to the public. Officers say the suspect ultimately crashed at embarcadero and green, about three quarters of a mile from where he struck that 14 Year Old Girl. Officers say they were then able to arrest him. Investigators say he, too, was transported to the hospital with injuries. They say were not related to the multiple crashes in which they say he was involved. In. At this point, investigators arent releasing the name of that driver or saying where hes from. They say multiple felony charges are pending. Live in San Francisco, Christien Kafton ktvu fox two news. All right, christian, thank you for that. The president also took aim at protests popping up on College Campuses around the country, some of which have featured hateful rhetoric towards jews. As israels war with hamas continues, President Biden reiterated his ironclad support for the jewish state even as its military moves into the city of rafah, something the president has tried to deter israel from doing. This appears to be a limited operation, but of course, it that much of that depends on what comes next. Israels actions in rafah and the president s support is also causing divisions on capitol hill. And some democrats are calling on President Biden to take a tougher stance. My great hope is that we that the United States and that the president does not allow this horrific tragedy to happen with us support. It appears that hamas has consolidated itself in that one section of rafah. This is an opportunity for israel to take out that infrastructure.
