It was not at all a chaotic event. It was incredibly organized. But let me tell you, its nearly two weeks into this encampment here at uc berkeley. The propalestinian demonstrators tell. Us they are looking for the university to divest its support from israel. And those cries came to a fever pitch after israels newest operation in rafah, gaza. All eyes on you. All eyes on you. We will never leave you here at uc berkeley, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and Community Members filled sproul plaza with chants for revolution in response to israels attacks on rafah. Its been nearly two weeks since the propalestine encampment sprouted up at cal. And the number of tents has grown. A lot of people from different faiths, from different ethnic backgrounds, from different political beliefs, all here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right now is something that we have the power to impact, and the power to stop this is now the largest and longest lasting encampment in the world, and it has been remarkably peaceful. Some faculty members on campus stood and chanted side by side with their students in calling for divestment. So many of us are sort of forced to be complicit with in, you know, illegal, immoral war that is being waged on innocent populations in our name with our funds. Demonstrators in support of palestine have been particularly vocal on uc berkeleys campus. While some students feel empowered by the demonstrations, others see them in a different light. Calls for intifada or the shaking off of israeli control were heard ringing through the. Plaza. But the history of intifada brings back challenging memories for some jewish and israeli people. Ive never felt more ostracized or isolated ever in my life, nor have i ever felt such an overwhelm feeling of anxiety and distress. Simply just existing. Just simply being in my existence as a jewish american. Uc berkeley is one of six schools currently under congressional investigation for claims of antisemitism on campus. Since the october 7th attacks in israel. Though some students are struggling with the new reality on campus, one faculty member tells us he has full faith in his students. This is the best Public School in the world. Why wouldnt we trust these students to understand how to negotiate with their administration . What are just unnecessary demands . Do we trust our youth or not . And i think that i do.
