LEESBURG — Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Fred Jones, public information officer and 23-year employee of the agency, received two awards over the last two months each recognizing his dedicated work to building community relationships as a law enforcement officer. Jones won the 2021 Public Service award from Men of Distinction's Leesburg Black Heritage and the Community Engagement Award from Lake-Sumter. He said receiving these awards meant a lot to him as a former student of Lake-Sumter and a Black man in law enforcement. "This is more than just taking the bad guys to jail," he said of his work, and the message he tries to pass on to new deputies and academy students. "This is about building a relationship with the community."
