Letter to the editor Texas digital divide is serious issue

Robert Scott is correct: Texas needs a statewide broadband plan and office (G-N, 4-23). The digital divide is a complex issue that as Texans must collectively work on at the local, state and national levels. Students across the state – in urban and rural communities – were falling behind because of affordability and access issues before the pandemic. This disparity in access has widened even further as millions of children and college students were suddenly forced from brick-and-mortar schools to virtual learning. At WGU Texas, a non-profit, accredited online university, we strive to reach potential students who are currently not being served well, particularly students of color, those from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, those in rural areas, and those in mid-career.
