Letters to the Editor: Alzheimer's awareness

Alzheimer’s awareness
COVID-19 has dominated headlines, but unfortunately, other health-related concerns have not disappeared. The month of June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, with the goal of shining a light on all of the families dealing with this disease. There are 690,000 people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in California, and that number is expected to grow by over 20% in the next five years.
This disease impacts the whole family. Caregivers in California provided over 884 million hours of unpaid care last year alone.
As a caregiver to my mom, who is suffering from this disease, I have tremendous empathy for all families who have experienced or are currently experiencing Alzheimer’s. The quarantine that seniors in care facilities had to endure for their safety against COVID-19 last year accelerated her decline from Alzheimer’s, so this is an especially fraught year for families managing this disease.
